Racing de Santander - Villarreal CF: return to the elite begins at El Sardinero
Racing de Santander and Villarreal CF open the 2026/27 season with a match that already brings several interesting storylines in the first round. Friendly-match results do not bring points, but the way Racing finished their preparations is interesting. Against Sporting, they responded with four goals after conceding first, while against top-flight Alavés they remained competitive until the end. Villarreal arrive after a victory in Istanbul
Villarreal played their final pre-season match against Galatasaray and won 2-1. Ayoze Pérez opened the scoring from the penalty spot, while Georges Mikautadze scored the second goal after a move initiated by Juan Foyth with a run from his own half.
