Real Madrid - Málaga CF: guide to the league return at the Bernabéu
Real Madrid and Málaga CF meet in the 3rd round of LaLiga 2026/2027 at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid. The match is scheduled for Sunday, August 30. There is one important timing note for visitors: some international versions of the schedule show 15:00, while Real Madrid's schedule for the match in Madrid lists a 17:00 start local time. Anyone traveling to the stadium should follow the local time in Madrid and check it again immediately before departure.
This is not merely an early league away match for the newly promoted side. Málaga CF returns to the Bernabéu after a long absence from the top flight, while Real Madrid enters a new era with José Mourinho on the bench. That is why the third round will already provide an interesting first answer to two very different questions: how quickly Madrid has adapted to the new coach and whether Málaga can immediately compete against the strongest opponents.
If you are planning a trip to Madrid for this match, it is worth securing tickets in good time.
What is at stake for both teams
Real Madrid enters the league with high expectations, but also with an unusual schedule. It plays its first league match on August 22 away to RCD Espanyol, then hosts Real Sociedad on August 26 in the previously postponed Matchday 1 fixture, and only four days later Málaga CF arrives at the Bernabéu. Mourinho will therefore have to balance results, rhythm and the players' physical workload over a very short period.
Málaga is in a completely different position. The club has returned to the top flight after eight years. In the 2025/2026 season, it finished fourth in the second tier with 73 points, 21 wins and 75 goals scored, and earned promotion through the playoffs against UD Las Palmas and UD Almería. Returning to the elite brings a different level of speed and punishment for mistakes, something that was already evident in the opening round.
Away to Atlético de Madrid on August 19, Málaga lost 2-0. The home side decided the match in the second half with goals from Lee Kang-In and Álex Baena. Málaga finished with five shots, one shot on target and one corner, while remaining in contention for a long time. For Juanfran Funes's team, that match offered a useful picture of what awaits it at the Bernabéu as well: long periods without the ball, the need for discipline between the lines and very little room for mistakes when playing out from defense.
Before traveling to Madrid, Málaga still has a home match against RC Deportivo, so its points tally ahead of Matchday 3 cannot reliably be stated in advance. The same applies to Real Madrid, which has two league fixtures before this match.
- Real Madrid: league debut on August 22 away to RCD Espanyol.
- Real Madrid: plays Real Sociedad at the Bernabéu on August 26.
- Málaga CF: 2-0 defeat away to Atlético de Madrid in Matchday 1.
- Málaga CF: hosts RC Deportivo on August 24 before the Bernabéu.
Mourinho's Real Madrid: quality between the lines and more options going forward
José Mourinho took charge of Real Madrid this summer and signed a contract until June 30, 2029. His team finished preseason unbeaten, with three wins and one draw. The final test was particularly convincing: Real defeated Schalke 04 3-0 in Gelsenkirchen, with Kylian Mbappé, Dean Huijsen and Carlos Espí scoring the goals.
That match also provided a good indication of squad depth. Mourinho started with Courtois in goal, a back four of Trent - Konaté - Huijsen - Á. Carreras, Valverde and Bernardo deeper in midfield, and Brahim, Arda Güler and Vini Jr. behind Mbappé. In the second half, Rüdiger, Camavinga, Bellingham, Cucurella, Dumfries, Diomande and others came on. This allows the coach to change the tempo without completely changing the team's structure.
For Málaga CF, the biggest problem will be the space between the defensive and midfield lines. Arda Güler can receive the ball between the blocks and turn the play, Vini Jr. attacks width and depth from the left, while Mbappé punishes every delay by the center-backs. Valverde provides the option of quickly switching play and making aggressive runs from deeper positions. If Málaga drops too many players in front of its own penalty area, Real can sustain pressure for long periods. If the visitors try to push higher, space opens up for Mbappé and Vini Jr.
Set pieces will also be an important detail. Huijsen scored with a header against Schalke following an Arda Güler corner. Against a team that will probably have to defend many crosses and second balls, such situations can easily become one of the main sources of chances.
How Málaga CF can respond
Juanfran Funes remained in charge of the project after promotion and has a contract until 2028. In the opening round against Atlético de Madrid, Málaga started in a 4-1-4-1 formation. Alfonso Herrero was in goal, while the starting lineup also included Carlos Puga, Einar Galilea, Carlos Dotor, Dani Lorenzo and Joaquín Muñoz, among others.
Such a structure has clear logic against Real Madrid. One midfielder in front of the center-backs can close the zone into which Güler or Brahim move, while the two wide lines can try to double up on Real's wingers. The problem arises when the home side quickly switches the ball from one side to the other. If the visitors' block shifts too late, the full-back is left isolated against a player capable of attacking one-on-one.
Málaga will therefore need to choose its moments to step out. Against Atlético de Madrid, it did not create a large number of chances, but managed to keep the score at 0-0 until late in the first half and forced the home side to look for solutions through substitutions. At the Bernabéu, it will need the same level of patience, together with greater precision when it wins the ball. Losing possession immediately after intercepting an attack could be more dangerous than Real Madrid's initial pressure itself.
Eneko Jauregi is one of the options at center-forward. The striker made 25 appearances in the league and cup last season and scored four goals, while his ability to play with his back to goal can be important when Málaga needs to retain the ball and move the team out of a deep block.
Absences to monitor
A week before the match, it is still too early for a final list of unavailable players, so their status should be checked after the matches on August 22, 24 and 26.
For Real Madrid, according to the latest information before the match against Espanyol, Endrick and Tchouameni were unavailable because of minor muscular problems, while Éder Militão, Rodrygo and Ferland Mendy were in the process of recovering from longer-term injuries. That does not automatically mean all of them will miss the match against Málaga CF, but their availability needs to be monitored day by day.
For Málaga, Aarón Ochoa, Adrián Niño, Fernando Calero, Moussa and Murillo trained separately from the main group during preparations for the match against Deportivo. Goalkeeper Alfonso Herrero missed part of the team training because of workload management, but was expected to be available for the next league match.
- Real Madrid: Endrick and Tchouameni were most recently unavailable because of minor muscular problems.
- Real Madrid: Militão, Rodrygo and Mendy were in longer recovery processes.
- Málaga CF: Aarón Ochoa, Adrián Niño, Fernando Calero, Moussa and Murillo trained separately from the group.
- Málaga CF: Alfonso Herrero worked individually because of workload management, with no indication that he would have to miss the next match.
Head-to-head meetings: the return of a pairing that has not met since 2018
Real Madrid and Málaga CF played their last league meeting in April 2018 at La Rosaleda. Real won 2-1, with Isco and Casemiro scoring for the visitors. The last meeting at the Bernabéu was in November 2017 and ended in a 3-2 Real Madrid victory.
The last four league meetings all ended in Real Madrid victories:
- 15.04.2018. - Málaga CF 1-2 Real Madrid
- 25.11.2017. - Real Madrid 3-2 Málaga CF
- 21.05.2017. - Málaga CF 0-2 Real Madrid
- 21.01.2017. - Real Madrid 2-1 Málaga CF
The historical run, however, should not be projected too heavily onto the present. Since the last meeting, the coaches, almost the entire squads and Málaga's status in Spanish football have changed. For supporters, the more important fact is that this pairing is returning to the top-flight stage after more than eight years.
Santiago Bernabéu: what to expect at the stadium
Santiago Bernabéu is located at Avenida de Concha Espina 1 in Madrid. The stadium opened in 1947, and its current appearance is the result of a major multi-year reconstruction. Among the most recognizable elements of the new Bernabéu are the metallic exterior facade, a retractable roof, a 360-degree video scoreboard and a system allowing the pitch to be stored beneath the stands when the venue is used for other events.
A capacity of 83,186 is often listed for football matches. The same figure was also recorded as the attendance at one of Real Madrid's major matches in April 2026, which illustrates well the scale of the stadium when full.
The atmosphere against Málaga will not have the same profile as a city derby or El Clásico, but the return of the newly promoted team and one of the first home matches of Mourinho's second spell give the fixture its own story. The Bernabéu reacts particularly strongly to early pressure, sequences of corners and bursts of acceleration from Vini Jr. or Mbappé, so the opening part of the match will be important for the visitors. If Málaga survives the initial surge without conceding, the nervousness and expectations of the home crowd could open up a different type of match.
If a particular section or seating arrangement is important to you, it is worth securing tickets in good time.
Getting to the stadium: an important change on the Madrid Metro
For visitors arriving in Madrid by public transport, the most important practical information is not the classic instruction "get off at Santiago Bernabéu station". During 2026, the station is undergoing major renovation, and service on part of Line 10 has been suspended because of the works.
From July 4 to August 28, a wider section between Plaza de Castilla and Nuevos Ministerios is closed. After those works are completed, the suspension returns to the section between Cuzco and Nuevos Ministerios and, according to information from the regional transport consortium, is expected to remain in place until the end of the year. This means that on the day of the match, August 30, visitors should not plan to travel directly to Santiago Bernabéu station by Line 10.
The free S10 replacement bus is being used as an alternative, while regular bus lines 27 and 147 also run along the Paseo de la Castellana corridor. Nuevos Ministerios remains an important transport hub because other metro connections and commuter rail services are available there. From Nuevos Ministerios, the stadium area can be reached by replacement bus or on foot.
- Stadium address: Avenida de Concha Espina 1, Madrid.
- Santiago Bernabéu station on Line 10 is not operating normally because of construction work.
- The S10 replacement bus connects key points along the closed corridor.
- Regular city bus lines 27 and 147 are additional options along Paseo de la Castellana.
- If arriving by car, expect heavy traffic and limited parking options in the immediate area around the stadium, especially before and after the match.
For parking, it is more sensible to choose a public garage outside the immediate ring around the stadium in advance and complete the rest of the journey on foot or by public transport. Streets around the Bernabéu fill up quickly before major events, and traffic regulations can change. The gate-opening time for this specific match had not been confirmed in the checked sources, so it is not useful to guess. Visitors should check their ticket and the organizer's latest information on the day of the match and arrive with enough extra time for security checks and finding their section.
Short guide for supporters traveling to Madrid
The Bernabéu is located north of Madrid's historic center, along Paseo de la Castellana, in a densely built-up business and residential district. This is an advantage for visitors because the stadium is not isolated on the outskirts: the wider area contains restaurants, cafés, hotels and several transport connections. At the same time, precisely because of its urban location, visitors should not expect easy parking immediately next to the stadium.
For international travelers, it is especially important to coordinate the local kickoff time, the status of the metro works and the arrival time. The Sunday slot leaves enough room to arrive earlier in the day, but traffic and pedestrian flows around the stadium increase as kickoff approaches. If you are visiting the Bernabéu for the first time, it is more practical to be in the stadium area earlier rather than trying to arrive immediately before kickoff.
It is worth securing tickets in good time and then planning transport according to the confirmed local kickoff time.
