Real Madrid - Real Sociedad: the return of league football to the Bernabéu
Real Madrid and Real Sociedad meet on 26 August at 21:00 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in a Matchday 1 fixture of the 2026/2027 LaLiga season. The date is unusual because this opening-round match was moved due to the later return of some players following the summer international tournament. Real Madrid therefore open their league campaign four days earlier away to Espanyol, while Real Sociedad make their first league appearance on 21 August against Real Betis in Seville.
For the hosts, this will be the first league night of the new season at the Bernabéu and the first major test in front of their own supporters for José Mourinho's team. Real Sociedad arrive from a different starting point: they finished the previous league season in tenth place, but in April they won the Copa del Rey after the final against Atlético de Madrid. What is at stake at the start of the season
As of 18 August, neither Real Madrid nor Real Sociedad have yet played a league match in the new season, so the table still says nothing about them. The context from the previous campaign is more important. Real Madrid finished second with 86 points, while Real Sociedad were tenth with 46. Madrid enter the new season under clear pressure to keep pace with the leaders from the start, while Real Sociedad want to show that their cup success in the spring was not an isolated high point.
The schedule further increases the importance of this match. Real Madrid will already have played their league game away to Espanyol before it, and only four days after facing Real Sociedad they host Málaga CF. Real Sociedad, meanwhile, visit Real Betis five days before the Bernabéu fixture. This means that both teams will arrive in Madrid with their first real information about how their summer ideas work when points are at stake.
Real Madrid: Mourinho builds the team around speed and depth
Real Madrid completed their preparations unbeaten - three wins and one draw. Their final test was a 3-0 victory against Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen. Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring after pressing an error from the defence, Dean Huijsen headed in from an Arda Güler corner, and Carlos Espí completed the result after a cross from Álvaro Carreras.
Even more important was how Madrid looked. Mourinho stressed after the match that the tactical ideas are gradually coming together and that the team is working both with and without the ball. Against Schalke, Madrid attacked the space behind the last line early, used the speed of Mbappé and Vini Jr., while set pieces showed Huijsen's additional value in the penalty area.
Mbappé is naturally the central figure. He finished last season as LaLiga's top scorer with 25 goals, while he scored 42 in all competitions for Real Madrid. Alongside him in this squad are Vini Jr., Rodrygo, Brahim, Endrick, Carlos Espí and Yan Diomande, while the midfield offers profiles such as Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Arda Güler, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Bernardo Silva.
Mourinho also has numerous new or recently integrated players at his disposal, but their rhythm is not the same. Mbappé and Konaté each played one half against Schalke, while Bellingham, Cucurella and Diomande received fewer minutes. The automatisms are therefore still being built.
Real Madrid squad status
Three days before the final friendly match, the club announced that Asencio, Ferland Mendy, Rodrygo, Éder Militão and Thiago were continuing their recovery processes. Their status for 26 August should be monitored day by day, without making any definite predictions about their return in advance.
In practice, this particularly affects the defence. Huijsen, Konaté and Rüdiger are gaining greater importance in the centre of the back line, while Cucurella, Carreras and Dumfries are among the options on the flanks. Courtois and Lunin give Mourinho two proven goalkeeping options.
Real Sociedad: a trophy from the spring, but warnings from preparations
Pellegrino Matarazzo has been in charge of Real Sociedad since December 2025 and in just a few months managed to lead the team to the Copa del Rey trophy. The final against Atlético de Madrid ended 2-2 after extra time, with Real Sociedad winning 4-3 on penalties. Barrenetxea and Mikel Oyarzabal scored during regular play, while Pablo Marín converted the decisive penalty.
The summer picture, however, was not equally calm. Real Sociedad beat Aston Villa 4-2 on 28 July, but at the beginning of August they lost two consecutive matches against 1. FC Köln, 2-0 and 2-1. In their final test, Chelsea won 3-1 at Stamford Bridge. Jon Mikel Aramburu scored to make it 1-1 before half-time, but Real Sociedad found it more difficult to create chances in the second half.
Matarazzo has different solutions in attack. Takefusa Kubo can create an advantage between the lines, Barrenetxea attacks the flank and the space in behind, Óskarsson provides a presence in the penalty area, while Oyarzabal links the attack and the finishing phase. Against Chelsea, Oyarzabal returned to action from the bench.
In midfield, Carlos Soler, Yangel Herrera, Beñat Turrientes and Sučić offer a combination of control and work without the ball. At the Bernabéu, their ability to play through the hosts' first wave of pressure will be one of the keys. If Real Sociedad lose the ball in the central zone while the full-backs are high, Madrid have enough speed to reach a shooting position in just a few touches.
Real Sociedad squad status
Pablo Marín suffered a right hamstring injury in July, but he had already received minutes against Chelsea. Oyarzabal also played in London. According to reports from 18 August, Gonçalo Guedes and Jon Gorrotxategi were still working on returning to full competitive rhythm, while Jon Pacheco remained outside full group training. The final picture will become clearer after the league trip to Betis.
Head-to-head meetings give Madrid a clear psychological advantage
The most recent league meetings between these teams have been strongly favourable for Real Madrid. In the 2025/2026 season, Madrid won both matches, and the final meeting of the previous season also ended in victory for the Madrid club.

The most recent example is particularly important. In February, Real Madrid won 4-1 at the Bernabéu, with two goals from Vini Jr., while Gonzalo and Valverde were also among the scorers. Real Sociedad therefore arrive not only at the home of the favourites but also at a venue where they conceded four goals six months earlier.
That does not mean, however, that Matarazzo's team must play passively. The cup trophy from April showed that they can survive high-pressure matches and remain competitive until the end. The most logical plan for the visitors is to keep the middle compact enough, look for Kubo and Barrenetxea in transition and prevent Mbappé and Vini Jr. from constantly receiving one-on-one situations with plenty of space.
How the match could look
Real Madrid will probably try to take the initiative from the start in front of their own supporters. Mourinho already demanded collective work without the ball during preparations, and against Schalke his team benefited from early pressure and quick attacks after regaining possession. Arda Güler could be important at set pieces and with the final pass, Bellingham can make runs from deeper positions, while the width provided by Vini Jr. and Diomande or other wide options opens space for Mbappé.
Real Sociedad must avoid a match in which they do nothing but defend around their own penalty area. The visitors are better suited to situations in which Soler and Turrientes or Herrera can calm possession, while Kubo receives the ball facing the defence.
Set pieces are another important topic. Huijsen scored against Schalke following a corner, so Real Sociedad must be precise in defending both the first and second ball.
Santiago Bernabéu and the atmosphere of the first home league night
The stadium is located beside Paseo de la Castellana, in Madrid's Chamartín district, at Avenida de Concha Espina, 1. The modernised Bernabéu has a retractable roof, a large circular video scoreboard and renovated access areas with additional ramps, escalators and lifts. For spectators, it is also important that the stadium is extremely vertical, so the stands visually feel close to the pitch and noise builds up quickly within the enclosed space.
This will not be an ordinary early-season match. It will be Real Madrid's first league appearance at the Bernabéu in the 2026/2027 campaign, against an opponent that won the national cup only a few months earlier. If the hosts start aggressively and create chances early, pressure from the stands could further accelerate the tempo. If Real Sociedad survive the opening phase and keep the score level, the match may become more tactically patient.

How to get to the stadium
For visitors arriving from other parts of Madrid, public transport is the simplest option. Santiago Bernabéu station is on Metro line 10, immediately next to the stadium. Nuevos Ministerios is also nearby, a major transport hub connected by Metro and suburban trains.

- Suburban train: Nuevos Ministerios, then walk or take a short Metro ride.
- Bus: lines 14, 27, 40, 43, 120, 126, 147 and 150 run through the area.
- Car: expect heavy traffic around Paseo de la Castellana and do not plan to arrive at the last moment.
- On foot: the AZCA and Nuevos Ministerios area is very close to the stadium and is well connected by wide pedestrian routes.
The exact opening time of the gates for this match had not been announced by 18 August. For a match starting at 21:00, it is sensible to arrive in the stadium area considerably earlier, especially if you need to locate the exact sector and entrance. When arriving by car, it is useful to check the availability of public car parks in the wider area in advance and not rely on street parking immediately beside the stadium.
Madrid as a base for travelling supporters
The Bernabéu is in the northern part of the central urban corridor, beside one of Madrid's main avenues. This means that attending the match is not logistically tied to the outskirts: from the Sol, Gran Vía or Atocha areas, the stadium can be reached using the Metro, while Nuevos Ministerios connects the area with other important parts of the city and the suburban network.
For supporters coming only for the match, it is practical to plan the return journey by public transport. Santiago Bernabéu Metro station operates from the morning until after midnight, which covers the end of a match starting at 21:00, although crowds should be expected after the game.
It is worth securing tickets in good time.
What to watch immediately before the match
The most important information will come from the matches both teams play a few days earlier. Real Sociedad visit Real Betis on 21 August, while Real Madrid visit Espanyol on 22 August. Those matches will show who is truly ready for the starting line-up, how many minutes the players who joined preparations later can handle and whether the list of absences will change.
For Real Madrid, particular attention should be paid to the distribution of minutes for Mbappé, Bellingham, Konaté, Cucurella and Diomande, as well as the condition of the defensive players who were in recovery. For Real Sociedad, the focus is on Oyarzabal, Marín, Guedes, Gorrotxategi and Pacheco. Since there is enough time between 18 and 26 August for players' status to change, final assessments of the line-ups only make sense after the first league appearances.
