Cambuur returned as a promoted side and finished its first two matches without a point, while Twente responded to an opening defeat with a victory in the second round.
Every early point is important for the home side as it seeks to stabilise its return season. Twente is trying to build league consistency while simultaneously playing in European qualifiers. The visitors play the return leg in Baku against Qarabağ FK on 27 August, just three days before the trip to Leeuwarden, so recovery and rotation will be an important part of the preparation.
Kooi Stadion holds almost 15,000 spectators and has already shown how the proximity of the stands can increase the pressure on visiting teams. For the evening fixture against Twente, it is worth securing tickets in good time.
What is at stake after the early part of the season
After the first two completed league appearances for both clubs, FC Twente has three points with a goal difference of 3:2. SC Cambuur is without points with a goal difference of 1:7. The home side opened the season with a 0:4 defeat against Excelsior and then lost 3:1 away to Fortuna Sittard. Cambuur's only goal in those two rounds was scored by Rafik El Arguioui.
Twente started with a 1:0 away defeat against sc Heerenveen, but then beat PEC Zwolle 3:1. Daouda Weidmann scored to make it 1:1, Twente took the lead after an own goal by the visitors, and Daan Rots completed the match with a goal for 3:1.
Before the clash with Twente, Cambuur still has a home match against Feyenoord. Twente's third-round match against Telstar has been moved to 9 September because of the European schedule. The visitors will therefore arrive in Leeuwarden with fewer league minutes played, but with a heavier workload from international matches.

Johan Plat seeks a balance between courage and security
SC Cambuur entered the Eredivisie with a new head coach. Johan Plat took charge of the team for the 2026/2027 season, after Henk de Jong moved into an assistant coach role following promotion. When presenting Plat, the club highlighted attacking and attractive football as the direction it wants to continue pursuing.
The first two rounds showed how demanding the transition to a higher level is. Cambuur was heavily punished against Excelsior, while the performance in Sittard was better. After falling 2:0 behind early, El Arguioui pulled one back before half-time, and Cambuur had chances to equalise in the second half before the final 3:1 scoreline.
Against Twente, the home side can hardly afford another match in which it has to chase a two-goal deficit early on. Plat will therefore have to retain the aggressive approach, but with better protection of the space behind the ball.
The squad was further strengthened in August. Devid Eugene Bouah arrived as a 25-year-old right-back with more than two hundred senior appearances, while Mathieu Maertens joined as an experienced midfielder. Maertens can play in several positions, and the club particularly highlights his ability to make runs in behind, his work rate and his leadership experience.
Twente has quality, but also a demanding schedule
John van den Brom remained in charge of FC Twente and has a contract until the summer of 2027. His team wants to play attacking football, take the initiative and dominate, while the squad offers several different solutions in the final third.
Wout Weghorst is the central reference point in attack. Around him, Twente has Daan Rots, Marko Pjaca, Sam Lammers, Kristian Hlynsson and other players who can attack from different areas. Ramiz Zerrouki provides control in midfield, while Lars Unnerstall brings experience in goal.
The victory against PEC Zwolle showed the breadth of the threat: Weidmann and Rots were the scorers, and after turning the game around, Twente continued looking for more goals. On the other hand, the 1:0 defeat away to sc Heerenveen shows that the visitors are not yet completely stable in the league.
The biggest question ahead of Leeuwarden will be freshness. Twente lost 0:1 at home to Qarabağ FK on 20 August, and the return leg in Baku awaits on 27 August. The journey and the importance of that clash come immediately before Cambuur, so Van den Brom will have to balance continuity and rotation.
Absences and physical condition
For Twente, Aske Adelgaard and Stav Lemkin were unavailable in mid-August because of injuries. Ahead of the victory over PEC Zwolle, Wout Weghorst, Lars Unnerstall and Sondre Ørjasæter returned to the squad, while Filip Thorvaldsen was included for the first time. The final list of players available for Cambuur will become clearer only after the return leg in Baku.
For Cambuur, Daan Visser was still undergoing rehabilitation following a serious knee injury at the start of summer preparations. No confirmed list of other possible absentees for the match against Twente had been published by 23 August, so their status should be checked closer to the match.
Tactical battle: can Cambuur play through Twente's pressure?
The most interesting part of the match could be the way Cambuur progresses from the first phase of build-up play. Plat wants a team that plays football, but Twente has enough quality to turn a high ball recovery into a chance within a few passes. If the home side loses possession with many players ahead of the ball, Weghorst and players arriving from deeper positions can quickly attack an unsettled defence.
Cambuur therefore has to find the right balance. El Arguioui has already shown that he can provide a goal from midfield, Bouah offers a new physical dimension on the right, and Maertens could use his experience to help the team keep the ball for longer under pressure.
Twente will try to stretch the home defence, look for Weghorst from wide areas and bring midfielders onto second balls. Rots showed his threat with long-range shooting against PEC Zwolle, so Cambuur must defend the edge of the penalty area as well, not only the centre of the box.
The second factor is tempo. If Twente has to play at maximum intensity until the end in Baku, Cambuur will try to speed up the match, especially in the second half. If the visitors establish calm possession early, the physical factor could become less important.
Head-to-head meetings favour Twente
The last five head-to-head matches show that Twente has enjoyed more success in the recent period. Cambuur recorded its last victory in that sequence in August 2021, while Twente won the next three league meetings without conceding a goal.

The results are not a direct indication of the current match because both teams have significantly changed their squads since then, and Cambuur now plays in a different stadium. Nevertheless, the sequence reminds the home side how effectively Twente has managed to limit its attack in recent years.
Kooi Stadion and getting to Leeuwarden
Kooi Stadion is located at Stadionplein 15 in Leeuwarden and holds almost 15,000 spectators. Cambuur moved into its new home in 2024, and the first match there was played on 18 August of that year. The stands are close to the pitch, and the home side can turn early pressure into energy from the crowd. The first league evening here this season against Excelsior ended badly for Cambuur, but fan interest remains strong. The home match against Feyenoord on 23 August was sold out.
From Leeuwarden's main railway station, Kooi Stadion can be reached on foot via Tesselschadestraat, and the club estimates the route takes around 15 minutes.

For the match against Feyenoord on 23 August, the stadium gates opened 90 minutes before kick-off. For Twente, the opening time had not yet been announced separately at the time of writing, so this information should be checked closer to the match.
Anyone planning a trip to Leeuwarden should allow for a walk from the parking area or arrival by public transport and leave enough time before kick-off. It is worth securing seats in the stands for an evening match like this as early as possible.
Players worth watching
Rafik El Arguioui scored Cambuur's first league goal of the season and was an important link between midfield and attack in Sittard. Against Twente, it will be interesting to see how often he can receive the ball between the visitors' lines.
Mathieu Maertens brings experience to Cambuur's midfield. He played 254 matches for OH Leuven and contributed to 71 goals, while also wearing the captain's armband for several seasons.
Daan Rots has already scored a league goal this season and gives Twente a threat from the flank and from the area around the penalty box. Cambuur must not give him time to set up a shot.
Wout Weghorst gives the visitors a clear target in the penalty area. His presence changes the way Cambuur has to defend crosses, second balls and set pieces.
Ramiz Zerrouki is important for controlling the tempo. If Twente can calmly play through the pressure via him, it will be harder for the home side to maintain its aggression over longer phases.

Cambuur will not want to limit itself solely to defending. The club returned to the Eredivisie with the idea of active football, and the crowd expects a reaction after a difficult start. If Twente calms the home side's early surge, its greater quality in possession and the breadth of its attacking options could come to the fore.
