Dinamo Zagreb vs Viking FK: the play-off that opens the door to the league phase
Dinamo Zagreb and Viking FK meet at Stadion Maksimir in one of the most important clashes of the qualifying summer. The stakes are clear: the winner of the two-legged tie enters the league phase of the Champions League, while the defeated team continues its European season in the league phase of the lower continental competition. For Dinamo, this is the third European opponent of the summer. Against Thun, it first drew 1:1 in Switzerland, then won 3:2 in Zagreb and advanced. The next obstacle was Kauno Žalgiris. Dinamo won the first match in Zagreb 5:0, taking a huge step toward the play-off, before confirming qualification in Kaunas.
Such a path gives Mario Kovačević's team something Viking does not yet have at this stage - several competitive matches under European pressure. On the other hand, the Norwegian team arrives as national champion and as a club that during 2026 once again showed that the result from the previous season was no coincidence.

Why this two-legged tie is so important
The play-off is no longer just another qualifying round. After two matches, one of these two teams will be among the 36 participants in the Champions League league phase.

Viking carried its strong form into 2026. At one point during the spring part of the championship, it had nine consecutive league victories, and among the results that best demonstrate its attacking potential was a 5:0 victory against Bodø/Glimt. At the end of July, after 14 league matches, Viking had 34 points and a goal difference of 34:14, keeping it right near the top of the Eliteserien.
What to watch closely at Maksimir

Dinamo has already found its European rhythm

In such a structure, Dinamo can look like a 4-1-4-1 without the ball, but in possession the formation can easily turn into a more attacking 4-3-3 variation. Mišić's position is particularly important in this respect. If he can receive the ball behind the first line of Viking's press, Dinamo can quickly switch play toward the wings and force the Norwegian defence to spread out.
Miha Zajc has already been important in the qualifiers. In the first match against Thun, he scored the equaliser late in the game following a move involving Lukas Kačavenda and Fran Topić. Mislav Oršić offers experience from European matches and a long-range shot, while Beljo provides physical presence in the penalty area.
Scott McKenna is one of the more important players in the back line. The Scottish centre-back also scored in the convincing victory against Kauno Žalgiris. Viking is not an opponent that should be judged only by European experience
Viking's most recent major domestic season was highly efficient. In 2025, the club ended a long wait for the championship title and played the closing stage of the league under enormous pressure to deliver results. In the decisive match, it defeated Vålerenga 5:1 and maintained a one-point advantage over Bodø/Glimt.
The system developed by Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim and Morten Jensen is based on energy, aggressive movement and a large number of players arriving in the final third. Viking does not need to keep the ball for long to create problems. When it wins possession, it very quickly looks for space going forward.
Tripić is the central figure in that style of play. The captain is not only a player who contributes in the final phase but also a creator. During the spring of 2026, he had a run of matches in which he directly created opportunities for teammates, including the victory against Rosenborg in which he was involved in all three of his team's goals. Peter Christiansen provides a different type of threat - he looks less for the ball to feet and more for space opening behind the defence or between the centre-back and full-back.

Dinamo knows that a trip to Norway follows the Zagreb match and will not want to leave Viking with a result that gives the visitors control over the return leg.

Viking will try to do the opposite - reduce the number of such situations, force Dinamo into the wide areas and, after winning the ball, find Tripić or Christiansen as quickly as possible.
Set pieces could have particular value. McKenna gives Dinamo additional height for crosses, while Viking also has a team physically strong enough that it does not need to avoid such duels. In a match in which both sides know how costly a mistake can be, one corner or free kick can change the entire plan for the rest of the evening.
Maksimir remains a distinctive venue for a European match
Stadion Maksimir is located in the northeastern part of Zagreb, immediately next to Park Maksimir. It opened in 1912 and has been reconstructed several times over more than a century.
The stadium's current appearance has one important peculiarity for visitors - the eastern stand has not been open to spectators since the earthquake that struck Zagreb in 2020. The crowd is therefore concentrated in the remaining stands, which changes both the visual and acoustic impression of the stadium.
The northern stand has 10,965 seats, the upper and lower levels of the western stand have a combined 10,704 seats, while the southern stand has 3,931 seats and is traditionally also used to accommodate away supporters. Because of the stadium's configuration, different sectors have separate approaches, so it is important to check the stand and entrance designation on the ticket before arriving.
European nights at Maksimir carry additional weight precisely because of the stakes. This is not a league match that can be made up for a few days later. Every goal carries over into the return leg, and every prolonged period of pressure from the stands can influence the rhythm of the match.

Viking wants to prove that the Norwegian championship title and the results of recent seasons can provide the foundation for an even greater European breakthrough.
