Sparta Rotterdam - FC Utrecht: guide to the match at Het Kasteel

Anthony Correia's team was more dangerous in the final half-hour, and Adrian Blake reduced the deficit to 2-1, but the equaliser never came. In the second round, AZ won 4-1 at Stadion Galgenwaard. Artem Stepanov scored his first league goal after becoming available to play, but Utrecht conceded twice within a few minutes at the start of the second half and lost control of the match.
The early part of the season is therefore already creating clear pressure on the visitors. A third consecutive defeat would leave Utrecht on zero points ahead of a demanding continuation of the schedule, while a positive result in Rotterdam would stop the negative run before the home match against PSV.

Sparta found a way to create chances against Telstar
The most interesting part of Sparta's last match was not simply the fact that they scored three goals. Rogier Meijer got plenty of attacking moves through the width of the pitch. Lushendry Martes created overloads on the right, Bas Kuipers and Ayoni Santos were active on the left, while Nökkvi Thórisson constantly moved into finishing positions. Sparta could have had an even more convincing lead in the first half, but several very good chances went unused.
Shunsuke Mito was an important link between the lines and it was his pass that preceded Thórisson's goal for 0-2. Marvin Young not only provided the early lead but, together with Nick Verschuren, also carried out a large share of the defensive work. Late on, Robin van Cruijsen took advantage of the open space and made it 1-3.
For the match against Utrecht, particular attention should be paid to the condition of Bruno Martins Indi. The captain was not fit enough to play against Telstar, so Meijer had to change the central defensive pairing. There is no reason to declare him unavailable for the next round in advance, but his fitness will be important information when the starting line-up is selected.
Filip Bednarek started the season as the first-choice goalkeeper. In front of him, Sparta used Martes, Young, Verschuren and Kuipers against Telstar, while Julian Baas and Jens Toornstra provided experience and control in midfield. Mito, Thórisson and Santos give Meijer enough mobility that Sparta does not have to attack only through a traditional central striker.
Utrecht has attacking quality, but must reduce the number of open situations
Against AZ, Anthony Correia set up his team with Vasilis Barkas in goal and a line featuring Niklas Vesterlund, Siebe Horemans, Guus Offerhaus, Mike Eerdhuijzen and Arthur Zagré. Dani de Wit and Ferdinand Pohl started in midfield, with Ángel Alarcón, Artem Stepanov and Yoann Cathline up front.

AZ made it 0-3 in a short period, while the fourth goal came from a counterattack late on. Kevin Paredes brought additional energy after coming off the bench against AZ. Dani de Wit remains a player who can attack space from deep and be dangerous in the penalty area, especially if Sparta defend too deeply.
Utrecht's squad situation is not ideal. Alonzo Engwanda spent the summer working on his return after a hamstring injury, while Victor Jensen, Miliano Jonathans, Noah Ohio and Jaygo van Ommeren were also in rehabilitation programmes. Their final status should be checked immediately before the match. In addition, captain Joris van Overeem missed the match against AZ because of minor discomfort. This does not mean he will necessarily also be absent in Rotterdam, but Correia has already had to change the structure of the team because of it.
Tactical duel: Sparta's width against Utrecht's high press
If both teams retain the ideas from the previous round, the start could be very intense. Sparta pressed high from the first minute against Telstar and looked to use the flanks, while Utrecht also tried to win the ball early near the opposition penalty area against AZ.
For Sparta, the key is how quickly they can find Martes, Kuipers and the wingers after the first ball recovery. Utrecht had problems against AZ when the opponent bypassed the initial press and attacked the space behind the full-backs. Mito is exactly the type of footballer who can accelerate such a situation with a single touch or pass.
For Utrecht, the task is the opposite: not allowing the match to turn into a series of transitions. The visitors are better suited to longer attacks in which Dani de Wit, Cathline, Alarcón and Stepanov can gradually push Sparta back towards their own penalty area. If Utrecht lose patience too early, Sparta will get the space for what worked best for them against Telstar.
Set pieces could also play a major role. Sparta have height in the back line, while Utrecht already experienced against AZ how much one well-delivered set piece can change the course of a match. In a game in which both teams are still searching for full stability, the first goal could strongly determine the rhythm.

That sequence clearly shows how quickly the balance of power has changed. Utrecht won convincingly 4-1 in Rotterdam in November 2024, but did not beat Sparta in the next three league meetings. The stands are close to the pitch and, because of the relatively small capacity, the noise quickly intensifies when the home team begins to press. Sparta are a club that strongly feel the support of their own crowd at this stadium, and the visiting team does not have much time for calm build-up play if the hosts start aggressively.
Seats in the stands disappear quickly, especially for matches that attract large numbers of home and away supporters. For first-time visitors, it is useful to plan to enter earlier rather than arrive just before the opening whistle.

Het Kasteel is well connected by public transport from the wider Rotterdam area. If Martes, Kuipers, Mito and Thórisson frequently receive the ball while running, the home side will get the type of match they want. For Utrecht, a positive sign will be longer spells of possession in which De Wit and Stepanov receive the ball near the penalty area without constantly having to drop back towards midfield.
Rotterdam and the area around the stadium
Het Kasteel is in the western part of Rotterdam and is connected by public transport with Rotterdam Centraal and the rest of the city. For a first visit, it is more practical to rely on tram, bus or metro than to try to park immediately next to the stadium. Arriving in Spangen sufficiently early reduces the risk of congestion on the approaches and at the entrances.
