SCR Altach strengthens attack: Rodney Elongo-Yombo signs two-year contract
SCR Altach has brought in a new reinforcement for the attacking part of the team. The Austrian Bundesliga club confirmed the arrival of Rodney Elongo-Yombo on 27 August 2026, a 25-year-old attacking player who spent last season with 1. FC Saarbrücken in Germany's 3. Liga. According to the official announcement by the Altach club, the new player signed a two-year contract, tying him to the Vorarlberg club until the summer of 2028. Altach presents him as a versatile attacking player who can provide additional depth, experience from German professional football and greater tactical flexibility. His ability to play with both feet is particularly highlighted, a quality that can give coach Ognjen Zaric more options when positioning players in the final third of the pitch.
Elongo-Yombo arrives in Altach after a season in which he was a regular member of the Saarbrücken team. Data from the German Football Association, the DFB, show that in the 2025/2026 season he played all 38 league matches for Saarbrücken in the 3. Liga, recording two goals and three assists. He also added one appearance in the DFB-Pokal, finishing the season with 39 official appearances for the club. Such playing time is an important part of the context of his transfer because Altach is not signing a player who still needs to rediscover his competitive rhythm, but a footballer coming off a full season in a physically and tactically demanding professional competition. The club also emphasizes that it expects an immediate contribution to its attacking play from his arrival, rather than only long-term development potential.
More than 120 matches in Germany's 3. Liga
Rodney Elongo-Yombo's career before his transfer to Austria was almost entirely connected with German football. According to DFB data, he was born on 27 July 2001, and the German association lists Germany as his nationality. SCR Altach describes him in its official announcement as a German-Congolese footballer and notes that he completed part of his football education in the youth systems of FC Ingolstadt and SSV Ulm. He then moved through SpVgg Greuther Fürth from the youth categories toward senior football. It was with Fürth's second team that he gained more significant experience in the Regionalliga Bayern before taking the step to Borussia Dortmund in 2022.
The DFB statistical profile shows that he played 38 matches for SpVgg Greuther Fürth II in the Regionalliga Bayern, scoring eight goals and providing eight assists. That period was important because he showed that he could carry greater attacking responsibility while also playing in different roles across the offensive line. In the summer of 2022, he moved to Borussia Dortmund II, for whom he played in the 3. Liga over three seasons. For Dortmund's second team, he accumulated 91 league appearances, scored 11 goals and, according to DFB records, registered six assists. The number of appearances from that period confirms that he is not a player with only occasional experience in senior football, but a footballer who held a continuous role within a professional system over several seasons.
After three years in Dortmund, a transfer to 1. FC Saarbrücken followed in the summer of 2025. At his new club, he immediately became a regularly used player and appeared in all 38 league rounds during the 2025/2026 season. Combining his appearances for Dortmund II and Saarbrücken, the DFB records a total of 129 matches for Elongo-Yombo in the 3. Liga, with 13 goals and nine assists. SCR Altach, in its own announcement, speaks of approximately 130 professional matches in Germany and 25 direct goal contributions, while individual assist statistics may differ depending on the methodology used by each data provider. Regardless of that difference, the basic picture remains the same: Altach has acquired a player with extensive senior-level experience and a sufficiently large sample of matches for his characteristics to be assessed on the basis of continuity rather than a short run of appearances.
Altach seeks additional depth in attack
Elongo-Yombo's arrival coincides with the early part of a season in which Altach is still searching for consistency in results. According to official Austrian Bundesliga data as of 27 August, the team had one win and three defeats after four matches, with four goals scored and five conceded. Altach lost 1-0 away to Rapid in Vienna in the opening round, then defeated WSG Tirol 3-1 at home, before suffering a 1-0 defeat away to Sturm in Graz. In the fourth round, Hartberg won 2-1 in Altach on 22 August, even though the home side had 58.5 percent possession and attempted 18 shots according to the league's official statistics. That run does not mean Altach's problem can be reduced to only one area of the team, but an additional attacking player gives the coach more solutions at a time when greater efficiency is being sought.
Altach scored four goals in its first four league matches. Official Bundesliga statistics list Patrick Greil as the club's leading scorer with two goals, while Ousmane Diawara and Yann Massombo have scored one each. The squad already includes forwards such as Srdjan Hrstic and Marko Raguz, so Elongo-Yombo is not joining a team without competition. He also noted that he is looking forward to meeting his new teammates and supporters and to the challenges ahead. His statement contains no unrealistic promises regarding numbers or status within the team, which is consistent with the position of a player joining a new club in the middle of an already-started league season. The first objective will be to enter the team's training and tactical rhythm, after which the decision about his role will belong to the coaching staff.
For Altach, the fact that the new player arrives with experience from different development environments is also important. During four consecutive seasons with Borussia Dortmund II and Saarbrücken, Elongo-Yombo accumulated a large number of appearances in the 3. Liga and became accustomed to the continuity of senior competition. Continuity is probably more important in this case than an individual season with a high number of goals, because it demonstrates availability for competition and the ability to maintain a place in the rotation. Altach must now determine in which position and system such a profile can be used most effectively.
Ognjen Zaric gets a new option before the trip to LASK
Elongo-Yombo's arrival was confirmed only two days before Altach's next league match. According to the official preview from the Austrian Bundesliga, Ognjen Zaric's team will visit LASK at the Raiffeisen Arena in Linz on Saturday, 29 August 2026 at 19:30. The league has appointed Alexander Harkam as referee for the match. LASK began the season with three victories in its first three appearances, while the official league preview also states that the Linz team, including the closing stages of the previous season, has put together seven consecutive Bundesliga victories. It will therefore be a demanding away match for Altach, regardless of whether the new player is already in contention.
In the official transfer announcement, Altach did not state whether Elongo-Yombo would already be ready and administratively eligible to play against LASK. Given the very short period between the signing and the match, any inclusion in the squad will depend on registration, his physical condition and the assessment of the coaching staff. Even if his debut does not come immediately, the transfer was completed early enough for the new player to become integrated into the team during the first part of the regular phase of the championship. After the trip to Linz, Altach is scheduled to host Grazer AK on 12 September, so the international break and the gap before the next match will provide more time for tactical integration if needed.
Coach Ognjen Zaric has been in charge at Altach since January 2026, when he took over the team following Fabio Ingolitsch's departure for Sturm Graz. The club later announced that under Zaric, in 15 Bundesliga matches during the previous season, Altach recorded five victories and six draws and secured its place in the league. During the same period, Altach also reached the Austrian Cup final for the first time, after which the club extended the coach's contract ahead of schedule. That context is important for understanding the current transfer: Elongo-Yombo is joining a team whose coaching staff already has continuity in leadership and which is not undergoing an emergency coaching change or a complete reconstruction of its sporting project. His integration should therefore take place within already established demands and an existing playing philosophy.

The two-year duration of the contract shows that Altach views the transfer more broadly than as a short-term solution for a few autumn rounds. At a time when Altach has three points after four league rounds, every new attacking resource takes on additional importance, but it will not be possible to assess the transfer on the basis of the player's name or experience alone. Elongo-Yombo has a clear development path behind him, a significant number of professional matches and a season in which he was consistently available for Saarbrücken. In return, Altach offers him two years of contractual stability and an opportunity to play in Austria's highest division. Sporting director Netzer believes his profile will increase the threat and versatility of the attack, while the player emphasizes his desire to contribute to the team quickly and continue his development. Whether those expectations translate into a concrete role will be shown by the matches ahead, starting with a demanding period in which Altach is trying to improve its early-season league performance.
