St Patrick's Athletic stayed in the race for the top of the Irish Premier Division with a secure victory against Drogheda

St Patrick's Athletic recorded an important home victory in the League of Ireland Premier Division, defeating Drogheda United 2:0 at Richmond Park in Dublin. The match was played on Friday, 12 June 2026, and the home team achieved a result that confirmed the impression from the original report: St Patrick's controlled most of the match, created more pressure and ended the evening without conceding a goal. According to St Patrick's Athletic's report, the first news after the match was that Kian Leavy marked his return to club duties with a goal after his recent debut for the Republic of Ireland national team. The same result, scorers and course of the match were also confirmed by Irish media, according to which Leavy scored for the hosts in the 34th minute and Zack Elbouzedi in the 61st minute. The victory carried extra weight for Stephen Kenny's team because it came after a period in which St Patrick's, according to the Irish Times, had failed to score in the previous three matches.

Leavy opened the match after returning from international duty

The key moment of the first half came in the 34th minute, when Kian Leavy scored for 1:0. According to the Irish Times description, the move started down the right side, James Brown broke into the space behind the Drogheda defence after combining with Aidan Keena, and the cross reached Leavy after Edwin Agbaje's uncertain attempted clearance. Leavy then struck the net with his left foot and gave the hosts a deserved lead, after a period in which St Patrick's had more of the ball and made the more dangerous start to the match. Extratime stated in its report that Leavy scored from the area around the penalty spot, after Brown found a way behind the visiting defence with a low ball. For the midfielder, it was a particularly striking continuation of the week, because a few days earlier he had made an appearance for Ireland in a friendly match against Canada.

According to St Patrick's Athletic's official announcement of 6 June, in the Republic of Ireland's 1:1 draw against Canada, Leavy became the seventh player to play for the senior Ireland national team while being a member of that club. In the same announcement, the club listed his predecessors, including Shay Gibbons, Tommy Dunne, Dinny Lowry, Ronnie Whelan, Jackie Hennessy and Noel Campbell. The Irish Times pointed out that Leavy became the first St Patrick's player to appear for Ireland since 1971, when Noel Campbell played for the national team. In that context, the goal against Drogheda was not only important for the result, but also a continuation of a personally significant period for a player who has emerged in recent weeks as one of the more important figures in the team.

The hosts kept the rhythm, Drogheda struggled to reach the final phase

St Patrick's imposed the rhythm from the start of the match and more often moved play into the visitors' half. According to the Irish Times report, Zack Elbouzedi was among the first to raise the expectations of the home supporters, breaking past several defenders, but his attempt did not go on target. The hosts then put together a series of corners, but Drogheda's defence in the first phase of the match managed to withstand the pressure and prevent clear shots. Jamie Lennon tried with a header after one of Brown's balls from the corner, but that attempt did not find the target. Extratime meanwhile stressed that the visitors had very little going forward in the first half, with only one shot that went on target.

Drogheda's most concrete moment before the break came through Mark Doyle, who tried after Kieran Cruise's cut-back. According to Extratime, his backheel shot ended up in the hands of Danny Rogers, the goalkeeper who played for St Patrick's in this match. Before going into the break, the hosts could have increased their lead, especially when Ryan Edmondson received a promising chance in first-half stoppage time, but from close range he shot at Fynn Talley. Such situations kept Drogheda in the match, but the overall impression after the first 45 minutes was that St Patrick's had a clearer structure, more possession and a more concrete plan in the final third.

Elbouzedi decided the match with a solo move

The second goal came in the 61st minute and practically steered the match toward a home victory. According to the Irish Times, Elbouzedi moved from the left side toward the middle, passed several Drogheda players and, with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area, found the corner of the net. Extratime also described the goal as a move in which the winger received the ball wide, cut toward the edge of the penalty area and beat Talley with a low shot. It was a moment of individual quality in a phase of the match in which St Patrick's already had control, while Drogheda were finding it increasingly difficult to free themselves from pressure. With that, the hosts gained a safer advantage and psychologically eased the closing stages, although the visiting team later still created several situations from which they could have complicated the match.

The goal came in circumstances that caused dissatisfaction on Drogheda's side. According to the Irish Times and Extratime, Conor Keeley had to leave the pitch after receiving treatment for a head injury, and the visitors felt he had waited too long to return to play. Additional context to that episode is provided by the changes to the football laws that IFAB announced for the 2026/27 season, and which competitions that began before 1 July may also apply earlier. According to IFAB's summary, one of the amendments relates to players who receive treatment on the field and who must then remain out of play for a specified period, with prescribed exceptions. In this match, that detail was important because it happened immediately before St Patrick's second goal, although the official result and match record leave no doubt about the final outcome.

Rogers kept the net intact in the closing stages

Although St Patrick's controlled most of the match, the closing stages were not without work for the home goalkeeper. According to the Irish Times, Danny Rogers saved Leo Burney's headed attempt in the 67th minute, and in stoppage time he also stopped Brandon Kavanagh's free kick. Extratime described those interventions as key moments after which the hosts preserved a clean sheet. Rogers thus confirmed a stable evening, especially in the period when Drogheda were trying at least to reduce the deficit and bring the match back into a more uncertain framework. The fact that St Patrick's finished the match without conceding a goal further underlines the difference in the quality of performance between the two teams.

The hosts could also have scored a third goal in the closing stages. Chris Forrester, who came off the bench, found himself in a one-on-one situation with Talley and lifted the ball over the goalkeeper, but Conor Kane managed to clear it off the goal line. That detail did not change the outcome, but it showed that St Patrick's, even after the second goal, had not completely given up looking for another confirmation of dominance. On the other side, Drogheda tried in the final minutes through set pieces and crosses, but they did not manage to seriously undermine the home victory. The 2:0 result therefore realistically reflects the basic course of the match: St Patrick's were more organised, more concrete and more effective in the key moments.

A victory important for the table and confidence

According to the table published on St Patrick's Athletic's website after the match, the home team had 35 points from 20 matches and were in second place, behind Shamrock Rovers, who had 40 points from 21 matches. Bohemian FC were third with 34 points from 21 matches, and Dundalk fourth with 32 points from 20 encounters. That order shows why the victory against Drogheda had a wider significance than just one league evening: St Patrick's remained in the upper part of the table and retained a game in hand in relation to the leading team. The Irish Times meanwhile stated that the victory returned St Patrick's to second place and once again strengthened their position in the battle near the top.

For Drogheda, the defeat carried a different weight. According to the same St Patrick's Athletic table, Drogheda United had 21 points after 20 matches, the same as Galway United, but were positioned above Sligo Rovers and Waterford. The Irish Times stated that Drogheda remained third from bottom and that their winless run was extended to five matches. Such context puts additional pressure on a team that in Dublin showed periods of defensive resilience, but did not have enough substance in attack to seriously threaten the hosts. When a team away from home allows its opponent to control possession and rhythm for a long time, while at the same time creating few clear chances, it is difficult to achieve a positive result against an opponent from the top of the league.

A season in which every point matters

The League of Ireland officially states that the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division 2026 began on 6 February and runs until 30 October. It is the top tier of Irish club football, within the system managed by the League of Ireland under the Football Association of Ireland. Considering mid-June and the tightness of the table behind Shamrock Rovers, matches like this have increased importance for clubs that want to remain in the European race and not allow the leaders to pull away. With the victory against Drogheda, St Patrick's got exactly what they needed: three points, two goals after a weaker attacking period and defensive stability. In a league competition in which form changes quickly, such an outcome can also be important for the psychological continuation of the season.

The schedule also leaves little room for rest. According to St Patrick's Athletic and Extratime, St Patrick's next league match is scheduled for 19 June against Sligo Rovers at Richmond Park, while Drogheda host Shelbourne on the same date. For St Patrick's, that will be an opportunity to confirm the victory over Drogheda and continue putting pressure on the top of the table, while for Drogheda it will be a chance to end their winless run against an opponent from the upper part of the standings. After the Dublin match, the impression is clear: St Patrick's showed enough control and individual quality to deservedly take the points, while Drogheda can take from the defeat only parts of defensive discipline and several late attempts that were not enough for a comeback.
