Fritz survived a difficult match and, with a comeback, reached the BOSS Open semifinal in Stuttgart
Taylor Fritz, the second seed and defending champion at the BOSS Open, advanced to the semifinal of the ATP tournament in Stuttgart after one of the most demanding matches of the competition so far. According to the official ATP Tour result, the American tennis player defeated Mattia Bellucci 5:7, 7:5, 7:5 in the quarterfinal played on Friday, June 12, 2026, on the center court of the tournament in the German city of Stuttgart. The match lasted two hours, 26 minutes and 28 seconds, which says enough about the tension of a duel in which Fritz had to come back after losing the first set and, in both of the following sets, wait until the closing stages in order to break the resistance of his Italian opponent.
The victory had multiple importance for Fritz. In addition to keeping alive the possibility of defending the title he won in 2025, the American player confirmed that even on days when he does not dominate from the start, he can rely on stability in the key games. Bellucci, according to the ATP schedule and results, had already achieved his first grass-court quarterfinal at ATP Tour level in Stuttgart, and against the defending champion he showed that his result this week was no accident. Fritz, however, found a way in the second and third sets to maintain pressure, remain sufficiently calm on his own serve and take advantage of the moments in which space opened up for the Italian tennis player to deliver the finishing blow.
A comeback in three sets after Bellucci's strong opening
Bellucci entered the match without complexes, although on the other side of the net stood a player who had come to Stuttgart as one of the main candidates for the title. He won the first set 7:5, immediately changing the dynamics of the encounter and putting Fritz in a position where he had to chase the score. On grass, where the rhythm is often determined by serving and short exchanges, a lost set can carry especially great weight, because opportunities to come back do not appear often. Bellucci made use of precisely that: he maintained a high level of aggression, looked for early shots and forced Fritz into a match in which there was no room for longer lapses in concentration.
Fritz found the answer in the second set, but even then there was no quick turnaround. According to the official ATP Tour record, the American also won the second set only by 7:5, which shows that the encounter continued to move along a fine line between attacking risk and patient waiting for an error. In such circumstances, the psychological burden was considerable for both players. Fritz had to prove that he could withstand the pressure of being the defending champion, while Bellucci was close to one of the biggest victories of his season and had to deal with the fact that he had been keeping the favored opponent in serious danger for an increasingly long time.
The third set brought a similar pattern, with long periods in which Bellucci remained equal and did not allow Fritz to pull away on the scoreboard. The final 7:5 for the American tennis player reveals how little was missing for the duel to go into an even more dramatic outcome or for the Italian to reach a victory that would have strongly resonated in the grass-court part of the season. Fritz nevertheless played decisively enough in the closing stages, and such moments often separate favorites from players who are only trying to make a step toward a permanent presence in the final stages of ATP tournaments. In Stuttgart, it became clear that Bellucci has a game for grass, but also that Fritz, in the decisive moments, still possesses the experience that enables him to survive uncomfortable matches.
The defending champion remains in contention for a new trophy
According to the ATP Tour preview ahead of the tournament, the BOSS Open is an ATP 250 grass-court tournament held from June 8 to 14, 2026, at Tennisclub Weissenhof E.V. in Stuttgart. In the same official overview, the ATP stated that Fritz is the defending champion, after defeating Alexander Zverev 6:3, 7:6(0) in the 2025 final. That fact gives additional weight to his performance this year, because he returned to Stuttgart not only as a highly ranked player, but also as a tennis player who already knows how to win the key points on this court.
Fritz's path to the semifinal was not easy. According to the ATP draw, in the round of 16 against Martin Landaluce he also had to play three sets, and in the quarterfinal he again ended up in a long and uncertain duel. This means that, ahead of the semifinal, he has behind him two consecutive matches in which he had to spend both physical and mental energy. On the other hand, such encounters can also be useful because they give a player a sense of competitive resilience, especially on a surface where one or two points can completely change the course of a set.
For Fritz, Stuttgart is also important in the broader context of the season. According to the ATP rankings, ahead of the final stages of the tournament he was among the ten best players in the world, while the BOSS Open is part of a short period in which top tennis players adapt to grass. Although ATP 250 tournaments do not award the same number of points as higher-category tournaments, the rhythm of matches on grass has special value. Every match won provides additional information about movement, serve, transition toward the net and decisions in short exchanges, which are often decisive on this surface.
Bellucci confirmed his progress on grass
Although he was defeated, Bellucci does not leave Stuttgart without important sporting capital. According to the ATP Tour report after his victory in the round of 16, the Italian tennis player reached his first ATP quarterfinal on grass and his fifth quarterfinal overall at ATP Tour level. In the same report, the ATP stated that Bellucci beat Yannick Hanfmann 7:5, 6:7(4), 6:2 in the second round, after surprising seventh seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his first appearance in Stuttgart. Such a sequence of victories showed that his result was built through several demanding obstacles, and not merely through one good day.
Against Fritz, Bellucci further confirmed his good week. He did not settle for the role of outsider, but opened the match by winning the first set and kept active pressure until the very end of the third set. According to ATP data from the earlier report, the Italian was ranked No. 78 in the PIF ATP Rankings ahead of the quarterfinal, which makes his resistance against the second seed even more significant. On grass, ranking can often be relativized because of the specific nature of the surface, but it still remains clear that Bellucci showed a level in Stuttgart that can serve as encouragement for the continuation of the season.
What is especially important is that Bellucci, in three matches against different profiles of opponents, showed tactical adaptability. Against Davidovich Fokina he had to withstand the rhythm of a player who changes direction and pace well, against Hanfmann he won a physically demanding duel in which the German player had the support of the home crowd, and against Fritz he fought a battle with a tennis player whose game on grass relies on a powerful serve and quick decisions. Such diversity of opponents makes his performance more relevant than the quarterfinal defeat itself. Bellucci did not go further, but in Stuttgart he left the impression of a player who can be dangerous on this surface even to better-ranked opponents.
The semifinal against Bublik brings a new test
Fritz will play in the semifinal against Alexander Bublik, the third seed of the tournament. According to the official ATP Tour results, Bublik defeated Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 7:6(5), 7:6(3) in the quarterfinal, in a match that lasted one hour and 28 minutes. That result shows a different kind of challenge from the one Fritz had against Bellucci. Bublik advanced without losing a set, but through two tie-breaks, which points to a match in which serve and composure in the closing stages were crucial.
The duel between Fritz and Bublik could be strongly based on serve, the first shots after serve and the ability to make use of rare break points. Bublik is a player who often uses unpredictable solutions, drop shots, changes of rhythm and unexpected moves into the court, while Fritz usually seeks a more stable pattern, a powerful first serve and precise shots from the baseline. On grass, such a clash of styles can quickly change direction. One poor service game or several missed returns can be enough to turn a set around, so after two exhausting matches Fritz will have to find a way to be sharp and focused from the start.
In the other part of the draw, according to the ATP results overview, Jiri Lehečka also reached the final stages of the tournament with a 6:4, 7:6(4) victory against Frances Tiafoe. This brings Stuttgart closer to the final weekend with several players capable of playing extremely attacking tennis on grass. For Fritz, however, the most important thing is that he has remained in his half of the draw and that one more match separates him from another final. After the victory over Bellucci, it is clear that defending the title will require him to withstand a series of high-intensity matches, regardless of the fact that the status of favorite is still on his side.
Stuttgart as an early indicator of grass-court form
The BOSS Open has a special place in the calendar because it comes immediately after the clay-court part of the season and opens an important period of adaptation to grass. According to the ATP Tour, this year's edition is played from June 8 to 14, and the tournament belongs to the ATP 250 category. The organizers and the ATP stated in the tournament preview a prize fund of 768,220 euros, with 250 points for the singles winner and 100 points for semifinalists. Such data show that, although the tournament is not of the highest category, its sporting value goes beyond the points total alone because it is played at a moment when grass-court form is only just being established.
For many players, Stuttgart is an opportunity to quickly check how much their style can adapt to the lower bounce and faster points. For Fritz, that context is particularly important because his game, built around serve and powerful shots, can naturally function well on this surface, but only if movement and decisions are precise enough. Bellucci's resistance showed that neither defending-champion status nor a high ranking is a guarantee of a smooth passage. Fritz had to play a match in which every phase carried risk and in which he reached victory only after surviving a deficit on the scoreboard.
The quarterfinal in Stuttgart thus offered two messages. The first is that Fritz remains firm enough to find a way out of a difficult match, even when the opponent reaches the advantage first and maintains pressure for a long time. The second is that Bellucci can leave the tournament with confirmation that his progress on grass has real competitive weight. In the final stages of the BOSS Open, the fight for the title remains, but Fritz's passage against Bellucci can already be singled out as one of those matches that show how unpredictable and demanding the early weeks of the grass-court season can be.
