Tchouaméni spoke publicly for the first time about the conflict with Valverde: Real Madrid closed the case with large financial fines

Aurélien Tchouaméni, the French midfielder of Real Madrid, has publicly commented for the first time on the conflict with Federico Valverde that led to an internal disciplinary procedure at the Madrid club at the beginning of May. Speaking to journalists at the gathering of the French national team, according to reports by the Spanish media outlets AS and Cadena SER, Tchouaméni confirmed that “something happened” between the two teammates, but rejected claims that it was an incident of the scale described by some media outlets. The Frenchman said that numerous inaccuracies had appeared in public, especially claims about a physical attack and a punch, and emphasized that the club was aware of what had happened.

The case was officially opened at Real Madrid on May 7, 2026, when the club announced that it was launching disciplinary proceedings against Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni because of events at the first-team training session. The next day, Real Madrid announced that both players had appeared before the person in charge of the procedure, expressed regret over the incident and apologized to each other, to the club, to their teammates, to the coaching staff and to the fans. According to Real Madrid’s official announcement of May 8, the procedure was concluded with financial fines of 500,000 euros for each player.

Tchouaméni’s appearance is important because it was the first time he tried, in a direct public appearance, to calm a story that had for weeks been one of the most sensitive topics surrounding Real Madrid. In a club that is under constant pressure from results and the public, and in which relationships inside the dressing room are often the subject of heightened interest, this kind of incident took on additional weight. Still, according to the available information and the club’s official announcements, the case was concluded with internal measures, while Tchouaméni himself claims that he has no personal problem with Valverde today.

What Tchouaméni said about Valverde

According to AS’s report from the French national team’s press conference, Tchouaméni said that there were “obviously things” that were written and spoken about, but that the situation in the media had been exaggerated. He added that everything that happens at Real Madrid provokes a strong public reaction, which, according to his explanation, contributed to the incident turning into a much broader story. He specifically rejected claims that he had punched Valverde, saying that this “was not the case”, but he did not want to go into the details of the event itself.

The French international emphasized that situations happen in club dressing rooms that do not end up in public and that, in his opinion, it is important to distinguish an actual conflict from a media interpretation. According to Cadena SER, Tchouaméni said that “life goes on” and that he shares the same sporting goal with Valverde: winning trophies with Real Madrid. In the same appearance, he said that he currently has no personal problems with the Uruguayan midfielder.

Such wording does not deny that the incident happened, but places it within the framework of internal dressing-room tension that the club, according to its own announcements, handled through a disciplinary procedure. In doing so, Tchouaméni tried to draw a distinction between acknowledging that a conflict occurred and rejecting claims that it was a scenario that would point to more seriously damaged relations. For Real Madrid, that distinction is important because both players are among the team’s key midfielders and part of the sporting core on which the club relies.

Real Madrid reacted with an official procedure

On May 7, 2026, Real Madrid announced in an official statement that, after the events that had taken place that morning at the first-team training session, it was opening disciplinary proceedings against Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni. In that first announcement, the club did not give details of the incident, but announced that it would inform the public of the outcome after the completion of the internal procedures. Such an approach suggested that the club treated the case as a serious internal matter, but also that at that stage it did not want to confirm the numerous versions that had appeared in the media.

The next day, May 8, Real Madrid published a new statement in which it said that both players had been heard in the procedure. The club announced that Tchouaméni and Valverde expressed complete regret over what had happened and that they apologized to each other. The same announcement stated that they also apologized to the club, their teammates, the coaching staff and the fans, and that they accepted the possibility of a sanction that Real Madrid considered appropriate.

The most important part of the final club announcement was the decision on the financial fine. Real Madrid imposed a financial sanction of 500,000 euros on each player and thereby concluded the internal proceedings. There were no additional explanations in the official text about sporting consequences or possible suspensions, so the financial fine can be cited as the confirmed club measure. Because of the amount involved and the profile of the players, the decision was assessed in European sports media as a very strict internal sanction.

Valverde’s injury and different versions of events

A special part of the case related to Federico Valverde’s health condition. On May 7, Real Madrid published an official medical report in which it stated that Valverde, after examinations carried out by the club’s medical specialists, had been diagnosed with craniocerebral trauma. The club then announced that the Uruguayan midfielder was at home, in good condition, but that according to the medical protocols for that diagnosis he had to rest for between 10 and 14 days.

Because of that medical announcement, the incident gained additional seriousness, especially because different versions were appearing at the same time about how the injury had occurred. According to Sky Sports’s report, Valverde was taken to hospital after the incident, and later, in his own explanation, admitted that there had been a disagreement with a teammate, but denied that it had been a fistfight. In that version, reported by British and Spanish media, Valverde stated that he suffered the injury after accidentally hitting a table.

It was precisely the differences between media claims, Valverde’s explanation and Tchouaméni’s later public appearance that were the reason the case remained open in public debate even after Real Madrid concluded the disciplinary procedure. It was officially confirmed that the club initiated proceedings, that the players apologized, that Valverde had a diagnosed head injury and that both were fined 500,000 euros each. The details of the conflict itself beyond that remained mostly a matter of media reconstructions and statements by the actors involved.

Why the incident received so much attention

Conflicts in training sessions in professional sport are not unusual, but they rarely grow into a story that requires official club statements and such high financial fines. In this case, several circumstances attracted additional attention: it is Real Madrid, one of the most followed football clubs in the world; both players have an important role in the team; the incident occurred in the final stage of the season; and Valverde’s head injury prompted additional questions about the seriousness of the event.

In his public explanation, Tchouaméni pointed precisely to the size of Real Madrid as the reason why the story resonated more strongly than it would have, in his opinion, in a different environment. When a similar incident happens at a club of such status, every piece of information from the dressing room becomes a topic for international sports portals. Therefore, it is not surprising that, in the period between the first club statement and the later statements by the players, numerous interpretations appeared that did not have the same level of confirmation.

At the same time, it was important for Real Madrid to show that it controls the situation and that player behavior does not remain without consequences. The club’s official communication was relatively brief, but clear in the part relating to the disciplinary outcome. The club did not go into a broader description of the incident, but emphasized the players’ regret, their apologies and the final sanction. In doing so, Real Madrid tried to close the case without further public deepening of the conflict.

The relationship between the two midfielders and the sporting context

Tchouaméni and Valverde occupy an important place in Real Madrid’s midfield, and that is precisely why the question of their relationship gained broader sporting significance. If there is a serious personal problem between players who often share the pitch, that can affect the dynamics of the team, match preparation and the atmosphere in the dressing room. Tchouaméni’s message that he has no personal problem with Valverde is therefore not only an attempt to close one unpleasant story, but also a signal that the two players can continue to focus professionally on common goals.

According to AS, Tchouaméni said at the French national team’s press conference that he and Valverde are connected by the goal of winning trophies with Real Madrid. In the same appearance, he added that, in the event of a meeting between France and Uruguay at the World Cup, each of them would want to win for his national team. Such a statement fits into the usual professional framework: the club requires cooperation, the national team brings rivalry, and the personal relationship, according to his words, is no longer a disputed issue.

Valverde had also spoken about the case a few days earlier, according to an AS USA report, after arriving in Montevideo for the gathering of the Uruguayan national team. He said that he had the support of a large number of people, Real Madrid fans and the club itself, and that sometimes in football and in life one has to go through “small obstacles”. He added that the whole situation could help him mature and be a better captain in the future. Although his words are not a detailed explanation of the incident, they point to an attempt to redirect the story toward learning from a mistake and continuing his career.

What has been confirmed and what remains unclear

On the basis of the available official information, it is possible to clearly separate what has been confirmed from what has remained in the realm of interpretation. It has been confirmed that Real Madrid opened disciplinary proceedings against Valverde and Tchouaméni because of events at the first-team training session on May 7, 2026. It has also been confirmed that both players appeared in the procedure the next day, expressed regret, apologized to the relevant parties and accepted the club sanction. The financial fine of 500,000 euros for each player has also been officially confirmed.

It has also been confirmed that Valverde had a diagnosed craniocerebral trauma and that Real Madrid prescribed him rest for 10 to 14 days. What has not been officially described in detail is the mechanism of the conflict itself, that is, the precise sequence of events that led to the injury and disciplinary measures. Tchouaméni rejects the claim that he hit Valverde, while Valverde had denied in earlier statements that there had been a fistfight. For that reason, in professional reporting, it is necessary to emphasize the difference between officially confirmed facts and claims that come from media reconstructions.

For Real Madrid, the formal part of the case is over, but public interest has not disappeared because it concerns two players whose relationship will be followed for the rest of the season, or in the club’s future appearances. Tchouaméni’s words from the gathering of the French national team can therefore be read as an attempt to calm the situation and return the focus to the pitch. His main message is that the incident happened, that some media claims were exaggerated and that there is now no personal conflict between him and Valverde.
