Atmane survived a tie-break in Halle and stopped Landaluce after three sets
Terence Atmane secured a place in the second round of the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle after a demanding and scoreline-shifting duel against Martin Landaluce. The French tennis player won on Monday, 15 June 2026, 6:3, 3:6, 7:6(2), and the official ATP Tour results state that the match on the Schauinsland-Reisen Court lasted two hours, 18 minutes and five seconds. The encounter belonged to the first round of the singles section of the tournament, that is, the round-of-32 stage, and it was one of those matches in which the difference in the end came down to several points in the decisive tie-break. Atmane opened the match better, Landaluce managed to respond in the second set, but the Frenchman played more securely in the closing stage of the third set and won the decisive game 7:2. With that, he continued his appearance at the grass-court ATP 500 tournament in the German city of Halle, while the Spanish qualifier ended his competition in the main draw after three matches played over several days.
The first set went to Atmane, Landaluce struck back in the second
According to the official ATP Tour scoreboard, Atmane won the first set 6:3, and he created the key advantage with one break of serve. In a set in which there was not much room for a comeback, the Frenchman knew how to use the moment in which Landaluce lost rhythm on his opening shot. AS states in its match report that Atmane took the first part precisely with one break and thus forced his opponent to chase the score. On grass, where points are often shortened and where serve has special weight, such an advantage usually changes the dynamics of the entire set. Atmane looked more stable in the closing stage of the first part, without the need for risky shortening of rallies and with enough pressure on Landaluce's second serve.
Landaluce, however, showed in the second set why he had earned a place in the main tournament through qualifying. The Spaniard responded in the same measure, won the set 6:3 and brought the match back to the beginning. According to the available statistical data from Flashscore, both players converted only one of six break points during the match, which shows how firm the service games were and how costly every drop in concentration was. In the second part, Landaluce read Atmane's serve better and managed to open enough space for pressure in return games. The Frenchman remained in the match, but the second set went to the player who, in that period, was more decisive in longer rallies and calmer on the key points.
The third set decided without a break, the tie-break went to the Frenchman
The third set was the tensest part of the encounter, because no break occurred in it anymore. Atmane and Landaluce held their opening shots all the way to the tie-break, so the match entered a closing stage in which every mini-break had almost decisive value. AS reported that both players protected their serve in the deciding set, but that Atmane, in the tie-break, gained two important advantages on Landaluce's serve and thereby broke the match open. The final 7:2 in the decisive game looks convincing, but the entire context of the third set shows that the Frenchman reached victory only after long pressure and very little difference in the total number of points won. According to Flashscore statistics, Atmane won 94 points and Landaluce 91, which confirms how even the duel was.
Serve had a major role throughout the entire encounter. Flashscore statistics state that Atmane hit 10 aces, while Landaluce recorded 12, and both won more than 70 percent of points on their own serve. The Frenchman was somewhat more reliable in first-serve percentage, with 73 percent of first serves in, while Landaluce was at 62 percent. Atmane won 76 percent of points after the first serve and 64 percent after the second, while Landaluce, according to the same source, won 79 percent of points after the first and 60 percent after the second serve. The differences were small, but in the closing stage they nevertheless went to the side of the player who kept his calm in the tie-break and imposed the score more quickly.
Landaluce entered the main draw through qualifying
The official ATP Tour results show that Landaluce reached the main draw after two qualifying appearances. In the first round of qualifying he defeated Marc-Andrea Huesler 3:6, 6:3, 7:6(8), and then in the final round of qualifying he beat Tom Gentzsch 7:5, 6:4. This means that against Atmane he was playing his third match in Halle in a short period, and again in an encounter that went to a third set and a decisive game. His performance against Atmane therefore cannot be reduced only to defeat, because even in the main draw he showed that he can maintain a high serving level and force his opponent onto the hardest possible path to victory. Still, in the final points of the third set he lacked several more precise solutions on return and more stability in the tie-break.
For Atmane, the victory carried special weight because it came in a match in which he failed to keep control after the first set. Instead of a smooth passage, he had to react after Landaluce's comeback and find a solution in a third set in which there were not many opportunities. In such encounters, the difference is often not in overall dominance, but in who handles the pressure better in the final few minutes. Atmane managed to gain an early advantage in the decisive game, and after that he did not allow Landaluce a return into the tie-break. The victory brings him a place in the round of 16 and an additional test on a surface on which mistakes are quickly punished.
Halle as an important stop of the grass-court season
The Terra Wortmann Open in Halle is traditionally one of the most important men's grass-court tournaments ahead of Wimbledon. In the official tournament profile, the ATP Tour lists Halle as an ATP 500 series event, and the 2026 edition is played from 15 to 21 June. The official tournament website states that this is the 33rd edition of the Terra Wortmann Open, while the ATP announced that the total prize money of this year's tournament amounts to 2,522,220 euros. In the singles competition, the winner receives 500 points and 483,145 euros, the finalist 330 points and 259,940 euros, while reaching the round of 16 brings 50 points and 37,780 euros. Players who are eliminated in the first round remain without ATP points for that appearance, but according to the ATP prize schedule receive 20,145 euros.
This year's tournament in Halle has gathered a very strong draw. The official list of seeds and the draw list Alexander Zverev as the first seed, Felix Auger-Aliassime as the second, Ben Shelton as the third and Daniil Medvedev as the fourth seed. In the same part of the draw in which Atmane is located are also Tomás Martín Etcheverry and Medvedev, whose duel, according to the official schedule, was planned for Tuesday, 16 June. According to the official tournament draw, the winner of that encounter goes on to face Atmane in the second round. This means that the French tennis player, after an exhausting start, will probably get an even more demanding test, especially if his opponent is one of the seeds.
Statistics confirm how little decided it
Although the score by sets showed major oscillations, the overall statistics speak of a duel in which no one managed to create lasting superiority. According to Flashscore, Atmane won 68 of 93 points on serve, and Landaluce 66 of 92. In percentages, the Frenchman was at 73 percent of service points won, and the Spaniard at 72 percent. Both saved five of six break points, which further explains why the third set went to a tie-break. Atmane used second-serve points somewhat better, while Landaluce had a slight advantage in first-serve efficiency, but none of those indicators was large enough for the match to be decided before the final game.
In the context of a grass-court surface, the fact that both won 14 of 15 of their own service games is especially important. That meant that missed opportunities on return carried additional weight, especially in the third set. Atmane had a better ratio of decisions in the tie-break, and the 7:2 score indicates that in the closing stage he recognized more quickly when to attack and when to keep the ball in play. Landaluce, on the other hand, kept rhythm for a large part of the match and did not fall apart after losing the first set, but he did not find a way to shift the final pressure onto his opponent. In matches of this profile, especially on grass, psychological stability in the tie-break is often worth as much as technical advantage.
The first round brought several important results
Atmane's passage was part of the first day of the main draw in Halle, which brought several interesting outcomes. In its results overview for Monday, 15 June, the ATP Tour stated that Felix Auger-Aliassime, the second seed, defeated Nuno Borges 6:3, 3:6, 6:3. Frances Tiafoe eliminated the sixth seed Flavio Cobolli 6:2, 7:6(4), and Daniel Altmaier, who entered the tournament with a wildcard, beat Nikoloz Basilashvili 7:5, 6:4. Learner Tien advanced with a victory against Max Schönhaus 6:2, 6:4. Those results show that already the first day of the main tournament brought a combination of expected victories by seeds, success by a wildcard player and even duels in which details decided.
The match between Atmane and Landaluce fits precisely into such a pattern. It was not a meeting of seeds nor a match of the biggest names of the tournament, but it offered competitive drama, a change of rhythm and a closing stage in which every point carried special value. With the victory, Atmane kept the chance for another step forward in Halle, while Landaluce, despite the defeat, confirmed that his passage through qualifying had a solid sporting basis. For the French player, a shorter recovery and preparation for the round of 16 now follow, where it will no longer be enough only to survive crisis moments. Against the next opponent, he will have to repeat the serving stability from the first round, but also find earlier a way to use opportunities on return.
