Toyota returned to the top of Le Mans with a dramatic victory
Toyota Racing has once again won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the most important races in world motorsport, after an exceptionally close battle with BMW and Cadillac at the Circuit de la Sarthe. The crew of car #7, made up of Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Nyck de Vries, won the 94th edition of the French classic held on June 13 and 14, 2026. According to the official report of the FIA World Endurance Championship, Toyota thereby returned to the top step of the podium at Le Mans for the first time since 2022, while for the Japanese manufacturer this was its sixth overall victory in the race.
The race was decided in the closing hours, after Toyota #7, Toyota’s second crew in car #8, BMW #20 and Cadillac #12 found themselves in a direct fight for overall victory. According to official FIA WEC data, the gap between the winning Toyota and the second-placed BMW was only 10.913 seconds, which was described as the closest overall finish in the history of the FIA World Endurance Championship. BMW Team WRT finished second with the crew of Robin Frijns, René Rast and Sheldon van der Linde, while Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryō Hirakawa in Toyota #8 took third place.
Cadillac, which for much of the race looked like one of the most serious contenders for victory, missed out on the podium. According to the FIA WEC report, Cadillac #12, driven by Norman Nato, Will Stevens and Louis Delétraz, finished fourth after a drive-through penalty for an infringement in a slow zone and after two unscheduled stops. The American manufacturer’s other strong contender, Cadillac #38, had earlier lost laps due to a power steering problem and then retired. As a result, despite Cadillac’s strong pace, the finale belonged to Toyota and BMW.
Victory after years of waiting
Toyota’s victory carried special significance because it ended a period in which the Japanese manufacturer, after its dominance in the first phase of the hybrid era, had to cope with increased competition at the top of the Hypercar class. In its official report, the FIA WEC states that this is Toyota’s first Le Mans victory in four years and also the brand’s sixth overall triumph in the race. This further consolidated Toyota’s position among the most successful manufacturers in the history of the event, although it still remains behind traditional giants such as Porsche, Audi and Ferrari in total number of victories.
The #7 crew had a complicated route to victory. According to the championship organiser’s report, Toyota #7 started from deep in the Hypercar order, from 14th place, while the sister #8 car began from 15th position. Such a starting position did not suggest a relatively early entry into the fight at the front, but Toyota changed its strategic rhythm already in the opening part of the race and tried to get its cars into clean air. According to the FIA WEC, that decision laid the foundations for the later comeback into the battle for victory.
The winning car did not go through the race without problems either. The FIA WEC states that Toyota #7 suffered a slow puncture at the start of the fourth hour, and later also had a driveshaft sensor issue that briefly dropped it down the order. An endurance race at Le Mans rarely allows a completely clean run, so the decisive factor in the final outcome was the ability of the crew and the team to limit the losses, react in time to safety periods and stay close enough to the leaders when the race began to break open.
A finale decided by seconds
The greatest drama unfolded in the final hours, when the gap among the leaders was reduced to a minimum. The FIA WEC states that the second safety car period on Sunday morning, introduced to repair the protective barrier after Ayhancan Güven’s heavy crash in the Manthey DK Engineering LMGT3-class Porsche, brought Toyota #7 back into direct contention for victory. From that moment, the race turned into a four-way fight between the two Toyotas, BMW #20 and Cadillac #12.
According to the official FIA WEC report, Kobayashi’s pace, Nyck de Vries’s decisive overtakes and the timing of a late Full Course Yellow period played key roles in the closing stages. In one of the important moves, de Vries passed Norman Nato at Mulsanne corner, putting further pressure from Toyota on Cadillac. Kobayashi then completed the final stint and crossed the finish line first, while BMW #20 remained close enough for the race to retain uncertainty until the final laps.
Mike Conway said in a statement carried by the FIA WEC that victory at Le Mans is always special because it is an exceptionally demanding race, and that the competition, in his words, was very strong. He stressed that even in the final two or three hours it was not clear how the race would end. His statement captures the character of this edition well: although Toyota ultimately controlled the final laps, neither BMW nor Cadillac disappeared from the fight early enough for the winning team to wait calmly for the finish.
BMW confirmed its progress, Cadillac left unrewarded
Second place for BMW #20 is one of the most important achievements for the German manufacturer at Le Mans in the modern era. The FIA WEC states that it is BMW’s first overall podium at La Sarthe since 1999, when BMW won the race with the V12 LMR prototype. The crew of Frijns, Rast and van der Linde arrived at Le Mans after winning the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, so the result in France confirms that the BMW M Hybrid V8 programme made a significant step forward in the 2026 season.
René Rast, according to a report by RACER, said after the race that the team had mixed feelings: on the one hand, the result was a great success for the project, while on the other there was regret because victory had been within reach. That summary matches the impression BMW left during the race. Car #20 was not merely a beneficiary of other people’s problems, but through its own pace, strategy and reliability forced Toyota to make a maximum effort right to the very end.
Cadillac, however, was left with a sense of a missed opportunity. According to the FIA WEC, car #12 was among the candidates for the brand’s first Le Mans victory, but the penalty and additional stops reduced its chances at the moment when the race was being decided. Cadillac #38, shared by Sébastien Bourdais, Jack Aitken and Earl Bamber, was also in the fight at the front, but a power steering problem in the middle of the race first caused a major time loss and then retirement. For that reason, Cadillac #12’s fourth place, although valuable in the Hypercar competition, had the taste of an unused chance.
Ferrari without a continuation of its winning streak
The race also brought an end to Ferrari’s winning streak at Le Mans. The FIA WEC states that the defending winners failed to achieve a fourth consecutive triumph, and Ferrari’s 499P cars were not among the main podium contenders in the closing stages. The best-placed Ferrari car was #51, which according to the official report finished fifth, while #50 was among the retired cars in the Hypercar class.
In previous years, Ferrari had marked a new era of Le Mans, especially after the Italian manufacturer’s return to the fight for overall victory. Nevertheless, the 2026 edition showed how quickly the balance of power in the Hypercar class can change. Toyota arrived at Le Mans without a dominant starting position, BMW with confirmed progress, and Cadillac with very convincing speed, but the final order was determined by details of strategy, penalties, reliability and the ability to take advantage of safety periods.
Such an outcome is also important for the continuation of the FIA World Endurance Championship season. According to the FIA WEC, Toyota’s victory at Le Mans lifted it to the top of the manufacturers’ and drivers’ standings. Since the Le Mans race is the third event out of eight in the 2026 season, the result in France can strongly influence the rest of the championship, but it does not close the fight for the title. BMW, Cadillac and Ferrari showed enough pace for the remainder of the season to stay open.
Le Mans once again attracted record attention
According to the official FIA WEC report, there were 350,105 spectators at the circuit during the 2026 edition, which was cited as a record attendance. Le Mans continues to occupy a special place in the motorsport calendar because it combines speed, reliability, strategy and the ability of teams to endure the full 24 hours without a serious mistake. The race is held on the Circuit de la Sarthe, which according to FIA WEC data is 13.626 kilometres long and has 38 corners, and its configuration combines a permanent racing section with parts of public roads.
This year’s edition further emphasised the value of the Hypercar class, in which factory and heavily supported programmes from several manufacturers compete for overall victory. The official 24 Heures du Mans race preview highlighted that the 94th edition was the third race of the FIA WEC season and that major manufacturers such as Aston Martin, Alpine, BMW, Cadillac, Ferrari, Genesis, Peugeot and Toyota were competing in Hypercar. Such a field explains why victory at Le Mans in 2026 has special meaning: Toyota did not win during a period of weaker competition, but in one of the most crowded and technically diverse fields of recent years.
Alongside Toyota’s overall victory, the official FIA WEC report also recorded wins in the remaining classes. In the LMP2 category, Inter Europol Competition triumphed with the Oreca-Gibson #43 driven by Tom Dillmann, Nick Yelloly and Jakub Śmiechowski. In the LMGT3 class, TF Sport won with Corvette #33, with the crew of Ben Keating, Nicky Catsburg and Jonny Edgar. These results further show the breadth of Le Mans, because behind the overall Hypercar battle there are simultaneously separate races in classes with their own strategies, dramas and twists.
What Toyota’s triumph means for the season
With its victory, Toyota showed that despite increasing pressure from its rivals, it still possesses the experience and operational calm required for the most demanding race of the season. Car #7 was not the most straightforward favourite after qualifying, did not have a trouble-free race and did not reach victory by escaping from the competition, but through a combination of pace, strategy and precise execution at key moments. For Kobayashi and Conway, this was their second Le Mans victory, while de Vries, according to reports by specialised media, achieved his first overall triumph in the race.
For BMW, second place can be confirmation that the project is entering a more mature phase. If victory at Spa-Francorchamps showed that BMW M Team WRT can win a standard FIA WEC race, the result at Le Mans showed that it can also fight on the toughest stage. For Cadillac, the question remains how much the penalty, additional stops and the failure on the sister car changed an outcome that, judging by the course of the race, could have been more favourable. Ferrari, on the other hand, must look for an answer after a race in which it failed to continue the streak that had marked the previous years.
The rest of the season brings a new test of form. The FIA WEC announced that the championship continues with the 6 Hours of São Paulo from July 10 to 12, 2026. After Le Mans, Toyota enters the continuation with major competitive and psychological capital, but the level of competition shown by BMW and Cadillac suggests that the fight at the top will not come down to one manufacturer. Le Mans once again confirmed its basic sporting logic: even after 24 hours of driving, the final margin can fit into just a few seconds.
