The official Tour de France Femmes website states that the time trial from Gevrey-Chambertin to Dijon was 21 kilometers long, with approximately 255 meters of total climbing. After the flatter opening kilometers, the route went over the Lacets de Marsannay climb, approximately 1.8 kilometers long with an average gradient of 6.9 percent, and then toward the faster finishing section in Dijon. Such a profile was not a pure flat power test: it required precise effort distribution, a good position on the bicycle and a compromise between aerodynamic efficiency and climbing ability. That is precisely why the choice of helmet, skinsuit, hand position and other details was particularly important, and the UCI sought to ensure that the pursuit of so-called marginal gains did not involve elements outside the permitted framework.

The stage was ultimately won by Marlen Reusser of Movistar, the reigning world time trial champion, in a time of 27 minutes and 30 seconds and at an average speed of 45.82 kilometers per hour, according to the organizer's official report. Lieke Nooijen finished only four seconds behind her, while Demi Vollering was 18 seconds back. With the victory, Reusser also took the yellow jersey, further demonstrating how important the time trial was for the overall race standings. The gap between the first- and second-placed cyclists was less than five seconds, so it is understandable why teams and officials pay attention to technical details that may individually appear negligible. At the same time, the result itself provides no evidence of prohibited equipment; the official classification remained the result of sporting competition, while the enhanced checks were a preventive and regulatory measure.

What science says about the so-called chest fairing

The suspicions did not arise from theory alone. A peer-reviewed study by Bert Blocken, Fabio Malizia and Thijs van Druenen, published in 2024 in the Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, analyzed the effect of different shapes of front aerodynamic additions on a cyclist in a time-trial position. The authors used computational fluid dynamics, CFD, and validated the results through wind-tunnel testing. They compared a configuration without an addition with seven different variants of the so-called chest fairing. According to the study results, the largest tested addition could reduce total aerodynamic drag by up to 3.6 percent, but the researchers also found that some shapes actually increased drag. This is an important nuance: not every form of padding is automatically faster, and the effect depends on position, body shape, the size and geometry of the addition, and how the entire system behaves in the airflow.

The research also showed that an optimally shaped addition could, under certain conditions, provide a gain of at least around 0.78 seconds per kilometer. On a 21-kilometer course, such a laboratory value, if simply extrapolated mathematically over the entire distance, would correspond to a difference of more than 16 seconds. However, such a calculation should not be interpreted as a prediction of the actual gain on the Gevrey-Chambertin–Dijon stage. The course included a climb, changes in speed, wind and different body positions, while the study's authors themselves emphasized that the benefit must be assessed for a specific rider through dedicated testing. Nevertheless, the figure explains why the regulator does not regard the issue as trivial: in an elite time trial, even a gain of a few seconds can change the standings, and gaps at the Tour are often small enough for a marginal gain to become competitively relevant.

Blocken explained to The Guardian in Dijon that such an addition can alter the airflow around the body and reduce aerodynamic drag. His point was not that it automatically produces gains of tens of seconds, but that over a time trial of twenty or thirty kilometers, a sufficiently well-optimized modification can become decisive. The aerodynamic logic is similar to other attempts to fill space at the front of the torso: the aim is to reduce unfavorable pressure zones and turbulence that arise between the arms, body and legs. In June 2026, Dutch cyclist Jan-Willem van Schip was disqualified on the final stage of the French race Ronde de l'Oise, with non-compliant clothing equipment given as the official reason. Van Schip later said that the case concerned a bottle he had carried under the front of his jersey. That example shows that the UCI's rules on morphology and non-essential elements apply regardless of sex, and that objects placed under clothing can be treated as a technical infringement when they are judged to have no justified function or to alter a rider's profile. Koen de Kort, head of the technical and innovation department at Lidl-Trek, warned in comments reported by specialist media that implementing the rule in practice is more complicated than it sounds. Sports bras differ in construction, thickness, level of support and cup shape, so the mere presence of padding cannot automatically mean an attempt to cheat. The relevant question becomes the purpose of the additional material and whether it is a functional part of the garment or an element deliberately inserted to alter the aerodynamic profile. It is precisely this gray area that has led teams to call for a clearer and more consistent method of inspection.

Marianne Vos supported the rules, but with a privacy boundary

Multiple world champion Marianne Vos supported the intention to enforce the technical rules, but stressed that checks must remain proportionate and non-invasive. The Guardian reported her view that everyone in elite cycling is looking for the best aerodynamics and that this is precisely why rules must exist for participants to follow. When it came to the clothing inspection itself, Vos emphasized that she had no problem with the procedure as long as it did not turn into an excessively invasive examination. That position summarizes the two needs that collide in this case: protecting equal conditions of competition and protecting the dignity of female athletes. It is not enough simply to determine what is technically prohibited; it is equally important to define how the prohibition will be checked in a way that is professional, predictable and appropriate.

The professional cyclists' association CPA also, according to reports from the peloton, called for greater transparency regarding the procedure. The organization did not question the UCI's right to enforce its own regulations, but emphasized that checks must protect the privacy and dignity of every rider and that cyclists should know which methods are used to conduct the inspection. Media reports mentioned the possibility of a private check carried out by female officials, but the publicly available UCI notice to teams did not set out such a procedure in detail. As a result, the discussion very quickly moved beyond pure aerodynamics and raised the issue of standardization: if the federation intends to monitor sports bras or other parts of clothing more strictly, the procedure must be clear enough for athletes to know in advance what is considered permitted and what is prohibited.

Consistency of enforcement is becoming a key issue for the UCI

Some criticism also focused on the issue of consistency between men's and women's races. The Guardian recorded comments that similar clothing checks had not been publicly highlighted before or after the men's time trial at the 2026 Tour de France, even though attempts to use objects on the front of jerseys had already been recorded in men's cycling. Rolf Aldag, manager of the Canyon//SRAM team for which Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney rides, took the position that rules should be enforced if they already exist and that the standard should apply to everyone. The challenge for the UCI is therefore twofold: to prevent prohibited aerodynamic tricks while at the same time avoiding the impression that different groups of athletes are inspected according to different criteria. As of August 7, 2026, it had not been publicly confirmed that any cyclist at the Tour had been penalized for the disputed aerodynamic addition, but the debate had already shown that in the future the UCI will have to define more precisely where legitimate clothing ends and prohibited body shaping begins.
