At an earlier stage of the investigation, some samples were also analyzed at the government chemistry laboratory, while authorities continued toxicological, microbiological and environmental testing. Such a combination of analyses is important because finding a particular substance in an organism does not in itself necessarily explain its source or prove that it was the direct cause of death.

Weakness and partial paralysis of the limbs were recorded in some of the animals before death. KWS stated that, in the first 15 cases, ten elephants showed similar symptoms, including an inability to stand up, before dying within one to two days. The remaining carcasses in that initial group were too decomposed or damaged by scavengers for an equally reliable clinical picture to be established. Therefore, it has not yet been confirmed that a particular pesticide was the source of the cyanide or that any agricultural product was deliberately poisoned.

As part of the investigation, KWS also involved Kenya's Pest Control Products Board, the regulatory authority for crop protection products, to determine whether pesticides or other chemicals in the Kimana, Kuku, Kitenden and wider Amboseli areas had been improperly used, stored or disposed of. According to information published by KWS in early August, samples of water, soil, vegetation and other possible sources of contamination are being examined. This part of the investigation is particularly important in a landscape where the boundaries between agricultural land and areas used by elephants do not always coincide with the administrative boundaries of protected areas. Unlabeled chemicals found in Kimana, but a link to the elephant deaths has not been proven

The investigation took on a new dimension after a search in the Tikondo area of Kimana, within Loitoktok Sub-County. According to a statement by the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, investigators found various substances there, including potentially toxic and unlabeled chemicals suspected of having been obtained from a neighboring country. The materials were seized and sent for further scientific analysis. At the same time, the Ministry warned that merely finding these substances does not prove that they are connected with the deaths or that persons associated with the location bear criminal responsibility.

Four people were detained as persons of interest, and investigators also announced that they were looking for another person who might have information important to the case. According to a Big Life Foundation update dated August 25, the four detainees had been questioned and then released without charge, while analysis of the chemicals found is still ongoing. This detail further confirms that the investigation remains in the evidence-gathering phase rather than at the stage of established criminal responsibility. Kenyan authorities have announced that any proceedings will follow only if scientific and investigative findings show that someone unlawfully poisoned or otherwise killed wildlife.

A natural source of cyanogenic compounds is also being investigated

Agricultural chemicals are not the only explanation being considered. KWS stated that the possible role of giant star grass, the species Cynodon plectostachyus, which can contain cyanogenic compounds, is also being investigated. The Big Life Foundation, an organization operating in the wider Amboseli ecosystem and cooperating with KWS, reported that this grass had grown vigorously following heavier rainfall earlier in the year and that investigators were examining whether natural cyanogenic exposure could be part of the explanation. The organization warned that the detection of cyanide alone does not automatically establish whether the toxin entered the body from an industrial chemical, an agricultural product or a plant.

That possibility is one of the reasons experts are urging caution about final conclusions. Of the total of 18 deaths, seven were recorded inside Amboseli National Park, seven in Kimana Sanctuary, three in the Kitenden area and one at Motikanju Kuku Ranch. Four of the seven elephants found inside the national park were near Kimana Gate, and authorities estimated that they probably belonged to the same herd or family group. Such a spatial distribution supports the need for the investigation not to be limited to the national park itself, but to cover the entire ecosystem through which the animals move.
