The second aviation component of the 41st Croatian contingent (HRVCON) departed on July 16, 2024, from the "Knez Trpimir" barracks in Divulje to the NATO peace support mission KFOR (Kosovo Force) in the Republic of Kosovo.
Leading the aviation component is Captain Duje Voloder from the 395th Transport Helicopter Squadron of the 93rd Wing of the Croatian Air Force. Voloder, a Mi-171 SH helicopter pilot, is embarking on his seventh mission to Kosovo.
Captain Voloder emphasized that the contingent is extremely prepared, experienced, and ready for the new mission. The Croatian contingent, stationed at Slatina Airport in Pristina, has the main task of transporting KFOR forces, cargo, and VIPs.
KFOR, established based on United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244, began operations in 1999 to ensure a safe environment and freedom of movement for all Kosovo residents. Over the years, the number of KFOR troops has decreased from the initial 50,000 to the current 4,500, adapting to the changing security situation.
In addition to its primary mission, KFOR also supports capacity building of security organizations in Kosovo. These activities are carried out by the NATO Advisory and Liaison Team (NALT), providing practical assistance and advice in logistics, procurement, finance, force development and planning, and leadership development. Currently, NALT consists of approximately 45 military and civilian members from 13 allied and partner countries.
KFOR coordinates its activities with the European Union, particularly with EULEX, the EU Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo. EULEX and KFOR work together to maintain peace and stability in the region, ensuring respect for the rights of all communities.
In the fall of 2023, NATO decided to temporarily reinforce KFOR with additional troops due to increased tensions in the region. Currently, KFOR consists of over 4,500 soldiers from 27 NATO allies and partner countries, including Croatia. The Croatian contingent, with its Mi-171 SH helicopters, provides crucial support to air operations and transportation.
As part of its tasks, KFOR also provides security protection for important cultural and religious sites in Kosovo. Since 2013, KFOR has gradually transferred security responsibility for eight sites to the Kosovo Police, while one site, the Decani Monastery, remains under direct KFOR protection.
KFOR Commander, Brigadier General Özkan Ulutaş from the Turkish Armed Forces, assumed command on October 10, 2023. Under his leadership, KFOR continues to provide stability and security in Kosovo, closely cooperating with local and international partners.
KFOR activities include regular exercises and training to ensure readiness of forces. Additionally, KFOR provides logistical support to all units deployed in the region, enabling their effective operations.
Given the increasing importance of cybersecurity, KFOR implements initiatives to strengthen cyber defense, ensuring protection of its communication and information systems. These activities are crucial for maintaining operational capability and protecting critical data.
KFOR's role in maintaining peace and security in Kosovo remains unchanged, and the Croatian contingent, with its skilled and experienced personnel, continues to contribute to stability in the region.
