Prepare your bicycles and good mood because another edition of the favorite spring event is approaching, combining recreation, nature, and socializing in the heart of Istria. The Poreč Tourist Board, in fruitful collaboration with the tireless members of the Poreč Cycling Club, proudly announces the traditional cycling event "First May Recreational Parenzana". This event, which attracts an increasing number of active holiday enthusiasts year after year, is an ideal opportunity for all citizens and visitors of beautiful Poreč to spend the day in the fresh air, exploring the charms of the former narrow-gauge railway and the surrounding natural beauties.

Reserve Sunday, May 4th, 2025, for an unforgettable adventure that will begin in the idyllic ambiance of Baredine, a well-known locality near Poreč. Participant gathering and final registrations start already at 9:00 AM, while exactly at 10:00 AM, the cheerful column of cyclists will set off to explore the prepared trails.

Two trails for different affinities

To make the event accessible to everyone, regardless of fitness level and experience, the organizers have prepared two attractive routes:

  • Longer trail (30 km): Intended for more experienced cyclists and those seeking a greater challenge, this route leads through diverse terrains, forest paths, and gravel sections that follow the route of the old Parenzana. The expected time to complete this trail is about three hours, providing enough time to enjoy the landscape and dynamic ride.

  • Shorter trail (15 km): Ideal for families with children and recreational riders who prefer a gentler ride, this trail offers a more relaxed pace and less demanding sections. The estimated ride duration is about two hours, making it a perfect choice for enjoying nature together.

It is important to note that both routes largely run on local trails, including forest paths and sections with uneven terrain. Due to the specifics of the terrain, a proper mountain bike (MTB) is mandatory for participation in the cycling event. Road or city bikes are not suitable for these trails, and participation with such bikes is not recommended for the safety of the participants themselves.

Safety first

The organizers place great emphasis on the safety of all participants. Although recommended for all cyclists, wearing a protective helmet is mandatory for all children under the age of 15. Also, children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult throughout the entire ride. The minimum age limit for participation in the cycling event is 7 years. Given the nature of the terrain, it is recommended to bring a spare inner tube and basic tools for possible minor repairs. Support from the organizers will be provided along the trail, but personal preparedness is always welcome.

The Parenzana experience

The cycling event is not just a sporting event, but also an opportunity to learn about the rich history of the Parenzana, the narrow-gauge railway that connected Trieste with Poreč in the early 20th century. Passing through the picturesque landscapes of inland Istria, the Parenzana was the lifeline of the region, transporting passengers and goods such as wine, olive oil, and stone. Although the railway was closed in 1935, its route has been revitalized today as a popular hiking and cycling trail, the "Path of Health and Friendship," which attracts numerous recreational enthusiasts eager to discover the hidden corners of Istria. Riding a part of this historic route provides a unique experience and insight into the former life of this area.

Registrations and additional information

Participation in the "First May Recreational Parenzana" requires prior registration. The organizers kindly ask all interested parties to register on time to ensure the best possible organization. You can easily register via the ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM. If you prefer in-person registration, you can do so on the day of the event, Sunday, May 4th, from 9:00 AM at the starting location in front of the Baredine Cave.

For any additional questions, potential ambiguities, or specific inquiries, feel free to contact the Poreč Cycling Club directly via email: bkporec@gmail.com. Club members will be happy to assist you with all necessary information.

Fun and socializing after the ride

After successfully completing the kilometers and enjoying the natural beauties of the Poreč hinterland, a well-deserved rest and entertainment follow. The Poreč Tourist Board has ensured that all participants of the cycling event are adequately rewarded for their efforts. A free lunch is provided for all registered participants to refresh tired muscles.

But that's not all! As part of the program, participants will have the opportunity to visit nearby attractions for free with expert guidance. The first is the Baredine Cave, a fascinating geomorphological monument of nature and the first speleological site in Istria adapted for tourist visits. Descend into the underground world adorned with speleothems of incredible shapes and discover the habitat of the endemic olm. Right next to the cave is the unique tractor museum "Traktor Story," which tells the story of the history of agriculture in this region through an impressive collection of old tractors and agricultural machinery.

The legendary local band Baredinesaurusi will provide the top atmosphere and musical background, whose energetic performances will surely get even the most tired cyclists dancing. A day filled with sports, nature, culture, gastronomy, and excellent entertainment awaits you in the heart of Istria, not far from beautiful Poreč.

Don't miss this great opportunity for recreation and socializing in the fresh air. Join the numerous cyclists at the "First May Recreational Parenzana" in Baredine. Come, ride the historic trails, enjoy Istrian delicacies and natural beauty, and create unforgettable memories. Poreč awaits you!

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
