Creski kaić from June 1 to 7 brings maritime heritage back to the center of island life
Cres will once again turn toward the sea, traditional boats, fishing customs, and the togetherness of the local community from June 1 to 7, 2026. The event Creski kaić – Days of Cres Maritime Tradition and Heritage has been announced as a multi-day program connecting cultural heritage, education, sport, gastronomy, and public events along the harbor of Cres. According to the organizers’ announcement, the traditional kaić remains at the heart of the program, a wooden boat that for decades was part of the everyday life of islanders, fishermen, farmers, and families who lived by the sea and from the sea. This year’s edition also fits into a broader regional context because in 2026 Kvarner holds the title of European Region of Gastronomy, while Primorje-Gorski Kotar County is simultaneously the European Region of Sport. In this way, Creski kaić also gains a stronger tourist, cultural, and development framework, but without moving away from its basic purpose: the preservation and contemporary interpretation of the island’s maritime heritage.
An event that does not present tradition as a museum object
Creski kaić is not conceived only as a performance to be observed, but as an event in which tradition is shown through work, knowledge, socializing, and participation. In its description of the event, the Tourist Board of the Town of Cres emphasizes that the program takes visitors back to the period before plastic boats and motorboats, when daily work, transport, fishing, and family life largely relied on small wooden boats. The official website of the event states that the main goal of Creski kaić is the preservation and valorization of the traditional way of life of the island of Cres as intangible cultural heritage, as well as raising awareness of the maritime and fishing legacy that shapes the island identity. This is precisely why the program includes exhibitions, workshops, regattas, competitions, music, lectures, and gastronomic events, and not only a protocol section or an open-air stage. Such an approach makes it possible to present the traditional boat as a living part of the space, and not only as an object from the past.
According to the available announcements, this year’s Creski kaić opens on Monday, June 1, with the launching of a restored kaić, a gastronomic surprise, and musical performances. The opening carries strong symbolism because the restoration and launching of the boat are connected with the basic idea of the event: knowledge about the building, maintenance, and use of traditional vessels is transmitted publicly, in the space in which such boats were used for centuries. On the same day, the sporting part of the program also begins, with the opening of a bocce tournament at the bocce court located right by the sea, on the main town square. Thus, already on the first day, maritime identity, public urban space, and local sport are connected, which is one of the recognizable features of the event.
A week of exhibitions, workshops, music, and competitions
The program of Creski kaić during the week includes a series of activities intended for different generations. The original announcements highlight workshops, exhibitions, lectures, tournaments, regattas, and concerts, while special importance is given to the education of children and young people. Such a program has a dual role: it brings visitors closer to the history of Cres as an island and maritime environment, while giving the local community an opportunity to present its own heritage through personal experience, skills, and participation in the organization. At a time when many coastal communities are facing the pressure of seasonality and the loss of traditional knowledge, events of this kind also have broader significance because they create a space for discussion about the preservation of identity, the environment, and a sustainable way of life.
The musical part of the program has been announced through performances by klapa Burin, the Josip Kašman Wind Orchestra, the duo In Between, klapas Teha and Čikat, the Iman acoustic trio, the Motta di Livenza Wind Orchestra, Infinity band, and Šajeta. Along with music, visitors can also expect tournaments in bocce, chess, briškula and trešeta, fishing, and rowing for women. The regatta of traditional sailing vessels, announced for Saturday, June 6, is one of the central events because it directly connects maritime heritage with the public experience of the harbor and the sea. The organizers also announce the arrival of guests from different parts of Croatia, through which the regatta grows beyond the local framework and becomes a meeting of people engaged in preserving traditional boats and maritime skills.
Gastronomy as part of the story of the sea and the island
The gastronomic program of Creski kaić takes place every day and occupies an important place in this year’s edition. The announcements mention communal cooking and presentations by local associations and guests, with dishes based on fish, shellfish, cephalopods, polenta, chickpeas, and other ingredients connected with coastal and island cuisine. Among the announced dishes are tuna in sauce with polenta, mussel buzara with spaghetti, roasted gilthead seabream and sea bass, and cuttlefish with chickpeas. The gastronomic part of the program is not only an accompanying offer, but one of the ways in which life by the sea is interpreted: fishing, food preparation, the shared table, and the transmission of recipes are an important part of the cultural memory of the island.
Special emphasis has been placed on the traditional Brudetijada, which will be held on Saturday, June 6. According to the announcement, it is one of the most recognizable and best-attended events of Creski kaić, in which local and guest teams participate in preparing brudet. In the context of the title European Region of Gastronomy 2026, such events gain additional importance because they show that regional gastronomy is not based only on restaurant offerings, but also on local customs, seasonal ingredients, community knowledge, and events accessible to a wider audience. In its announcements about Kvarner as the European Region of Gastronomy, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County emphasizes local producers, indigenous products, and the quality of ingredients as the foundation of the region’s recognizability, and Creski kaić transfers precisely that approach into the island’s public space.
Kvarner in the year of gastronomy and sport
This year’s Creski kaić is being held in a year in which Kvarner is officially positioned as the European Region of Gastronomy 2026, while Primorje-Gorski Kotar County also holds the title of European Region of Sport 2026. According to county announcements and promotional materials for the program, these titles are used to present the region as a space that connects gastronomy, sport, health, active life, local production, and cultural heritage. Creski kaić fits naturally into that framework: the program does not offer only a staged presentation of tradition, but encourages movement, participation, competitions, sailing, rowing, and time spent outdoors. In this way, island heritage becomes part of the contemporary experience of the destination, but also part of the discussion about sustainable tourism and the quality of life on islands.
For visitors who will be staying on the island during the first week of June, the event can be the central reason for coming to Cres, but also a starting point for getting to know the wider Cres area. During the program, the Town of Cres, the harbor, the squares, and the coastal area become an open stage, while workshops, competitions, and gastronomic events encourage a longer stay. For that reason, accommodation offers in Cres will also be useful to many who are planning to come, especially in the days around Saturday’s regatta and Brudetijada, when the greatest public interest is expected. It is important, however, that the tourist dimension of the event not be viewed separately from the local community, because it is precisely associations, clubs, institutions, and individuals that form the backbone of the program.
Croatian Island Product as confirmation of authenticity
Creski kaić carries the Croatian Island Product label, which further confirms its connection with the preservation of island heritage and authentic values. According to data from the Croatian Island Product program, the event is traditionally held in the first week of June, and its purpose is to preserve and highlight the intangible cultural heritage of the island of Cres connected with seafaring and fishing. The Croatian Island Product label is awarded by the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds to products, events, and initiatives that contribute to the recognizability of islands, the preservation of tradition, and the development of local communities. In the case of Creski kaić, the emphasis is not on a single physical product, but on a program that brings together knowledge, skills, customs, and public events.
Such a label is also important because of the broader position of Croatian islands, where cultural heritage is often preserved through small communities, family knowledge, and local associations. When a traditional boat, fishing customs, local cuisine, and a musical program are connected into a week of public activities, heritage becomes accessible to new generations and visitors. Creski kaić can therefore be viewed as an example of an event that simultaneously has a cultural, educational, tourist, and social function. At its center remains the question of how to preserve tradition without closing it into the past, that is, how to transfer it into the contemporary life of the island in a way that is understandable both to the local population and to guests.
The regatta, gondola, and harbor as the center of events
Saturday, June 6, will be one of the most dynamic days of the event. Alongside Brudetijada, a regatta of traditional sailing vessels has been announced, bringing together participants from different communities and attracting special public attention. The regatta has a competitive character, but its value also lies in the visibility of traditional vessels, their crews, and the knowledge needed to handle sailing boats. At a time when harbors are increasingly filled with modern vessels, such an event recalls a period in which small wooden boats were a working tool, a means of transport, and a symbol of the connection between people and the sea.
During the week, according to the organizers’ announcement, a traditional Venetian gondola will also sail through Cres, offering panoramic rides through the harbor of Cres. This detail gives the program additional attractiveness and connects Cres with the historical Adriatic maritime space, in which local traditions met for centuries with the influences of the wider Mediterranean. For visitors who want to follow several days of the program, especially the regatta, evening concerts, and gastronomic events, accommodation close to the event venue can make it easier to participate in the program without daily travel. At the same time, the greatest value of the event remains in the fact that it takes place in the space in which this heritage was created: by the sea, in the harbor, and on the squares of Cres.
Organizers and partners rely on local cooperation
The organizer of the event is Sailing Club Reful Cres, while the partners are the Town of Cres and OTRA. According to the submitted announcement, the event is co-financed from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Program through LAGUR Vela vrata, and it is held with the support of the Tourist Board of the Town of Cres, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, and the Kvarner Tourist Board. Numerous Cres clubs, associations, institutions, and individuals participate in its implementation, which shows that the event does not rest on a single institution, but on a broad local network. Such a model is important for the sustainability of the program because it enables knowledge, equipment, volunteer work, and organizational experience to be shared among different stakeholders.
Thus, in the first week of June 2026, Creski kaić once again brings together what is most important in the long term for Cres and other Adriatic islands: the sea, community, heritage, food, music, and public space. The program is at the same time a reminder of life before modern vessels and a call not to let traditional knowledge fall into oblivion. In a year in which Kvarner emphasizes gastronomy, sport, and active life, the Cres event shows how major regional titles can best be understood precisely through local stories. When the restored kaić is lowered into the sea again, that act will not be only the ceremonial beginning of the program, but also a public confirmation that island heritage can be preserved only if it continues to be used, transmitted, and shared.
