A weekend in Grobnišćina brings children's theatre, an educational walk, a supporters' gathering, Vespas and sports meetings

From Friday, 12 June, to Sunday, 14 June 2026, Grobnišćina is expecting a very eventful weekend in which cultural, recreational, tourist and sports programmes follow one another almost without a break. According to announcements by the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Čavle, the programme begins with a children's theatre performance at Čavle Primary School, continues with the guided walk "Along the paths of the Čavle ponds", and then expands to a supporters' gathering, a meeting of Vespa enthusiasts, a hiking trip to Snježnik and a taekwondo tournament in Mavrinci. It is a programme that simultaneously shows several recognisable features of the Čavle and Grobnik area: access to nature, the nurturing of local heritage, the importance of sports clubs and the strong role of the community in organising public events. For visitors coming to Grobnišćina from outside the places where the programmes are held, it is useful to check the schedule, registrations and accommodation close to the event venues in good time, especially because of several simultaneous activities during Saturday and Sunday. The organisers also emphasise that some programmes are free of charge, but that special organisational notes apply to some of them, from mandatory registration to recommendations for suitable footwear and movement at one's own responsibility.

A theatrical start to the weekend at Čavle Primary School

The programme begins on Friday, 12 June 2026, with the children's performance "Star and Darkness", which, according to the announcement by the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Čavle, will be held at Čavle Primary School from 9 to 9:45 a.m. The performance has been announced ahead of the Čavle – Omišalj Theatre Festival 2026, a cultural event that connects the City of Grobnik and Omišalj and is based on cooperation between two communities with Frankopan heritage. According to the festival's official announcement, performances in the festival programme are held alternately in Omišalj and in the area of the City of Grobnik, and the aim is to bring theatre closer to a wider audience and maintain the continuity of cultural programmes in smaller communities. The children's performance in Čavle has a special place in that respect because theatre is introduced into the school space, at a time adapted to the youngest audience and without the usual evening festival atmosphere. Such a format enables children to encounter theatre directly, in a familiar environment and through a theme close to everyday children's experience.

According to data from Mala scena Theatre, "Star and Darkness" is intended for children aged six and over, lasts 45 minutes and speaks about fear of the dark, unpleasant emotions, dreams, boredom and silence. At the centre of the story is a boy called One Me, whose friend Star shines for him at night, until she falls and he sets out on a journey to find her. Mala scena states that the performance is accompanied by live music on clarinet and cello, which gives the performance additional intimacy and distinguishes it from usual school guest performances. The creative team consists of Buga Marija Šimić Milošev, who signs the direction and concept, Matej Milošev as dramaturge and composer, and Marta Dogan as set designer. The organisers announce the performance as an opportunity to bring theatrical art closer to the youngest, but also to open, through stage language, topics that are often discussed with children indirectly, through story, play and music.

The third spring walk concludes the "Along the paths of the Čavle ponds" cycle

The Saturday programme, 13 June 2026, opens with the third and final spring guided walk within the project "Along the paths of the Čavle ponds". According to the announcement by the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Čavle, the Čavle – Podrvanj – City of Grobnik route begins at 9 a.m., and the gathering of participants is planned in front of the Čavle Culture Centre, from where the walk starts on foot. The official announcement states that the walking trail is 6.5 kilometres long in one direction and that walking in one direction takes approximately two and a half hours. The programme announcement highlights that seven restored Čavle ponds are visited during the walk, including four ponds in the Podrvanj area, as well as Lokva, Zdenac and Pazdeh. The total duration of the activity, including the return and stops, is estimated at around five hours of easy walking, which is why the organisers recommend clothing and footwear suitable for unpaved paths.

The Tourist Board of the Municipality of Čavle states that participation in the walk is free of charge, but that registrations are mandatory because of organisation and the limited number of participants. As on earlier walks, a welcome with a welcome liqueur and small contents for participants has been announced, and the official announcement specifically notes that walking is at one's own responsibility. The programme is open to different age groups, families and recreational walkers, and the organisers state that pets are also welcome, with the usual responsibility of owners for the safety and behaviour of animals. According to the Tourist Board's announcement, the walk guides are Edo Žeželić and Rea Čargonja. Since the route connects central Čavle, Podrvanj and the City of Grobnik, the walk also has a tourist dimension: participants do not visit only restored water points, but also an area where the natural landscape, local history and settlements of Grobnišćina overlap.

Restored ponds as part of local heritage and sustainable tourism

The project "Along the paths of the Čavle ponds" places small water sites at its centre, which for decades had practical, landscape and ecological value for the local community. According to the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Čavle, 14 ponds have been restored and arranged within the project, connected with more than 14 kilometres of trails in three walking routes, with the installation of information boards, benches and tables, cleaning of access paths and marking of sights. Novi list previously reported in a presentation of the project that the restoration began in 2023 and that the ponds are important as historical habitats and small sources that can have significance for local biodiversity. In that context, the director of the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Čavle, Rea Čargonja, emphasised that the goal was to protect the ponds, bring people closer to nature and create a new tourist attraction. For that reason, the Saturday walk is not conceived only as recreation, but also as a field form of spatial interpretation, in which the walking trail is used to transmit knowledge about heritage and a responsible attitude towards the environment.

The ponds are important in such a programme also because a story of slower, locally based tourism is built around them. Instead of large event interventions, the project relies on the already existing landscape, walking routes and the history of use of the area. Čavle and Grobnik have the advantage of proximity to Rijeka, but also a different rhythm from coastal tourist centres, so such walks attract those looking for a shorter stay in nature, a family outing or a combination of recreation and cultural heritage. The Tourist Board states on its pages that the Municipality of Čavle stretches from the Rječina valley and Grobnik field towards the area of Platak, Snježnik and Risnjak, which explains why outdoor programmes in this area naturally connect with cultural and sports contents. For those planning to stay longer than one programme, it is useful to compare the schedule of the walk, afternoon events and Sunday sports activities and to look in good time at accommodation offers in Grobnišćina.

Saturday continues with a supporters' gathering and a Vespa meeting

After the morning walk, events on Saturday move towards the centre of Čavle and the Square of Croatian Defenders, where a season-end celebration and a gathering of NK Rijeka supporters organised by Armada have been announced from 3 p.m. Novi list reported that Armada is preparing a larger gathering on Čavja on Saturday, 13 June, with a gastronomic and musical programme, and that the event is located in a large car park near the Culture Centre. According to the same report, the start of the gathering is planned for 3 p.m., and in addition to the supporters' character, contents indicating the broader social dimension of the gathering have also been announced. In the announcement, Armada especially thanked the Municipality of Čavle for its help with the organisation, while Novi list reported that the programme is also connected with the announcement of the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Armada's founding, which comes in 2027. Since this is a public gathering with a larger number of visitors, increased traffic and a greater need for organised arrival in the centre of the place are expected.

On the same day, Čavle and Grobnik will also host participants in the 13th meeting of the Vespa Club Rijeka. The Vespa Club Croatia calendar for 2026 lists the meeting of the Vespa Club Rijeka on the Rijeka/Grobnik route, while the Vespa Club Europe calendar records the same event from 12 to 14 June 2026 as a local club meeting. The original weekend announcement stated that more than one hundred participants would be staying in the Čavle area and that a dexterity riding test would also be held on the Square, giving the programme additional visual and competitive dynamics. Vespa meetings usually bring together lovers of classic scooters, club members and guests from other communities, so such a programme fits well into a weekend in which several different communities meet in the same space. For Čavle, this means that Saturday afternoon will be the densest part of the weekend, with the overlapping of recreational walkers, supporters, visitors and participants in motor culture.

Sunday brings the Snježnik Hike and the Grobnik Cup

The Sunday programme, 14 June 2026, continues in a sporting and hiking tone. The Croatian Mountaineering Society Platak has announced the Snježnik Hike, with gathering and registrations until 9:30 a.m. in front of Mali dom Sušak on Platak, while departure towards the summit of Snježnik with the guides of HPD Platak is planned for 10 a.m. According to the society's announcement, the return in front of Dom Sušak is expected around 2 p.m., and after the walk socialising with music, food and drinks is planned. Novi list stated in the announcement of the hike that it is the eighth traditional Snježnik Hike and that the trail is not demanding, but is moderately demanding in terms of fitness, with about four hours of walking. HPD Platak emphasises that a valid mountaineering card with paid membership fee is required for participation, which is an important note for all those who see the hike not only as an outing, but as an organised mountaineering action.

According to HPD Platak, this year's hike is connected with the Green Slopes project, focused on sustainable hiking and ski mountaineering, the education of guides and a responsible attitude towards mountain areas. Novi list states that the programme will present possibilities for the development of sustainable ski mountaineering in the area of Snježnik and Gorski kotar, including a proposal for a new ski-mountaineering route that would connect Mali dom Sušak, the summit of Snježnik, Srebrna vrata and Grlo. This makes the Sunday hike continue the broader theme of the weekend: the use of natural resources without losing their value and without turning recreation into pressure on the environment. Platak and Snježnik are already recognisable as areas of active stays in nature, and the connection of mountaineering, education and sustainable tourism further strengthens that position. In that sense, the hike is not only a traditional gathering of mountaineers, but also a public presentation of the way in which mountain space can be used responsibly.

On the same day, the 17th Grobnik Cup 2026, a club taekwondo tournament, is being held at the Mavrinci Sports Hall. The official competition system of the Croatian Taekwondo Federation states that the tournament is held on Sunday, 14 June 2026, at the "Mavrinci" Sports Hall, Mavrinci 2, Čavle, and that 150 competitors are registered. In the original weekend announcement, the start of the programme is listed at 9 a.m., which means that the sports hall will already be the centre of the competitive part of the weekend from the morning. Taekwondo tournaments of this type are important for younger age groups and club sport because they enable competitors to gain fighting experience, perform in front of an audience and compare themselves with peers from other clubs. For the local community, the Grobnik Cup additionally confirms the role of Mavrinci as a sporting place within the municipality, especially during a weekend in which hiking, recreational and public programmes are taking place at the same time.

Schedule of announced events

A weekend that connects culture, heritage and active time in space

The announced weekend in Grobnišćina shows how a local programme can be shaped without relying on one large event. The children's performance opens a space for culture and the youngest audience, the walk along the ponds introduces visitors to restored heritage and nature, the supporters' gathering brings together the sports community, the Vespa meeting brings a more international club character, and the Sunday hike and taekwondo tournament return the focus to recreation and competitive sport. Such diversity can be demanding for organisation, but it is an advantage for visitors because it enables a choice of programmes according to interest, age and physical readiness. The most important practical information remains clear: registration is required for the walk, suitable equipment is recommended for unpaved trails, the note about a mountaineering card applies to the hiking trip, and for the busier Saturday programme one should count on a larger number of people in the centre of Čavle. If weather conditions change or the organisers publish additional instructions, participants are advised to check the organisers' official channels before arrival.
