Cres marks World Tourism Day: a weekend of music, cycling, nature and island heritage
From Friday, September 25, to Sunday, September 27, 2026, Cres will mark World Tourism Day with a program combining gastronomy, local products, music, cycling, hiking, folklore and the interpretation of history. According to the current calendar of the Cres Tourist Board, several separate events will take place during the last weekend of September, together creating a program focused on experiencing the island beyond the peak of the summer season. Visitors will be able to meet local producers at Creska butega, take part in the Epic Rides recreational cycling event, join a free walking tour, explore the town with a costumed guide and discover the tradition of the Orlec Folklore Society. The program thus combines activities in the town of Cres, the island's hinterland and Orlec, with the common theme of discovering the destination through its people, landscape and heritage.
World Tourism Day is celebrated every year on September 27, and for 2026 UN Tourism has chosen the theme "Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to redesign tourism", highlighting the digital agenda and artificial intelligence as tools for reshaping tourism. The official international celebration in 2026 is being held in El Salvador. The Cres program does not directly replicate the technological focus of the global theme, but instead emphasizes local experience: moving through the landscape, encountering island customs, recreation, small producers and cultural heritage. This difference demonstrates the breadth of World Tourism Day as an occasion that can be marked in different places with activities adapted to the character of each destination.
Friday brings a farewell to summer and Creska butega
The program begins on Friday, September 25, with the event "Farewell to Summer 2026 – party by Vina Miramar". According to the program of the Cres Tourist Board, a serving of bean stew is scheduled from 1 p.m., while the musical program is announced from 8 p.m. with DJ Bizarre, saxophone and violin. It is an informal farewell to summer that also opens a weekend dedicated to tourism and island life after the end of the main part of the season. Instead of a large festival concept, the emphasis is on socializing, food and music, in other words activities connected with local everyday life and the evening atmosphere of the town.
On the same day, Creska butega, a fair of local products that the Tourist Board describes as a combination of tradition, homemade products and the island way of life, will also take place at Frane Petrić Square. For the September 25 edition, the start is announced for 6 p.m. Visitors can discover authentic delicacies, handicrafts and products connected with local customs, so the fair also functions as a meeting place for producers and guests, rather than merely as a point of sale. Creska butega is held regularly during the season on the main town square, giving local products a visible place in the town's tourist offer.
Such an introduction to the weekend further highlights one of Cres's important characteristics: the central town square is not only a historical backdrop but also a venue for contemporary events. The Cres Tourist Board states that today's town is the largest settlement on the island and its administrative center, situated in a wide bay, while the old town is characterized by narrow streets, stone houses and traces of former town fortifications. It is precisely in this space that everyday life, tourism and events intertwine during the weekend, allowing visitors to follow the program without becoming separated from the town's own rhythm.
For travelers who wish to combine all three days of the program, the available accommodation offers in Cres can serve as a starting point for planning their stay. Friday focuses on socializing and local products, Saturday on cycling and folklore, and Sunday on hiking and the interpretation of the town's history.
Epic Rides takes cyclists through Cres's demanding landscape
Saturday, September 26, brings Epic Rides Cres, an organized recreational cycling event that is not designed as a race. The Cres Tourist Board lists a main route 43.2 kilometers long and a shorter 32.7-kilometer option. The organizers of the Epic Rides project describe Cres as one of the shorter but at the same time very demanding routes on the calendar, with a combination of steep climbs, gravel roads, old tracks, pastures, forests and island villages. It is precisely the contrast between the relatively moderate distance and the technically demanding terrain that gives the Cres ride its distinctive character.
The organizers emphasize that the aim of the event is to experience the destination rather than compete for a result in a conventional race. The route is marked, and participants are provided with a GPX track, on-route support, a support vehicle for those unable to continue, medical assistance when needed and refreshments during the ride. The starter package also includes activities connected with socializing before and after the ride. This format broadens the range of potential participants because it brings together recreational cyclists who want an organized ride through nature without the pressure of a race, although the terrain itself still requires appropriate fitness and preparation.
The Cres route passes through a landscape where sea, rock, vegetation, open pastures and old settlements alternate within a small area. In its description of the destination, Epic Rides particularly highlights dry-stone walls, sheep, ancient villages, griffon vultures and a sense of a place where nature still strongly determines the rhythm of life. The organizers state that participants rated the previous edition on Cres as simultaneously one of the most beautiful and one of the most difficult in their calendar. The promotional description of the weekend also mentions the possibility of taking a more relaxed approach to the ride with an e-bike, further extending the idea of actively discovering the island to people with different levels of physical fitness.
The event also has a broader tourism objective. In the 2026 Annual Work Program and Financial Plan of the Cres Tourist Board, Epic Rides is listed as a project for promoting the destination for cycling and making cycling more accessible to recreational riders. The document anticipates around 300 participants accompanied by their companions, with Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, Italy and Serbia listed as target markets. Along with promoting cycle tourism, the plan specifically mentions generating overnight stays and local spending, showing that the event is also viewed as a tool for extending tourism activity beyond the summer peak.
Orlec celebrates 60 years of folklore tradition
Saturday's program is not limited to sport. In Orlec, the Orlec Folklore Society will celebrate 60 years of folklore tradition, with the ceremony announced for 6 p.m. in the local hall. The Cres Tourist Board describes the anniversary as a celebration of six decades of dedicated work, togetherness and love for folk heritage. At the center of the event will be the preservation of cultural identity, traditional values and intangible heritage, elements that on the island function not only as a tourist attraction but also as part of a living local legacy.
In its information on local associations, the City of Cres states that the Orlec Folklore Society is the only authentic folklore group on the island of Cres and plays an important role in preserving culture and heritage. The society also includes the Mići folklor section, established so that younger generations can learn old dances, games and customs. For this reason, the 60th anniversary is not merely a retrospective of one society's activities but also a story about the transmission of knowledge between generations. For visitors, it is an opportunity to connect their tourist experience of the island with the people who maintain tradition through their everyday work and performances.
Orlec also fits into the broader picture of Cres as an island whose tourism story does not end in the town of Cres or along the coast. Smaller settlements, rural areas, sheep farming, local gastronomy and customs are an important part of the island's identity. Including Orlec in the World Tourism Day weekend therefore expands the program beyond the main urban center and draws attention to a community whose heritage developed at a different pace from that of the town. Such an approach helps visitors experience the island as a collection of different places and experiences rather than as a single tourist point.
Sunday begins with a free hike toward St. Bartholomew
On World Tourism Day itself, Sunday, September 27, the program begins actively. The Cres Tourist Board has announced a free guided walking tour Cres – St. Bartholomew – Cres, seven kilometers long and classified as moderately demanding. Departure is at 9 a.m. from the fountain in Cres, and registration is mandatory via info@visitcres.hr. The tour is part of the Cres Hike program and allows participants to experience the landscape around the town more directly, without the need for the more complex organization of an independent excursion.
Seven kilometers is enough to make the walk more substantial than a short city tour, while still remaining accessible to a wide range of recreational hikers accustomed to spending time in nature. The organizers emphasize the moderate level of difficulty, so participants should expect island terrain rather than a completely flat promenade. In terms of content, the hike connects well with Saturday's cycling program: both events treat the landscape as the main part of the experience, while offering a different pace and a different level of physical demand.
A costumed tour and felting workshop bring the town's history back to life
After the morning hike, the program continues with activities dedicated to the town's history and tradition. A free costumed guided tour through Cres in Croatian and English is announced for 10 a.m. The Tourist Board states that the tour concept is focused on discovering history and customs while walking through the streets and lesser-known corners of the town with a guide in costume. The official World Tourism Day description also mentions a tasting of local products, connecting historical interpretation with the island's gastronomic heritage.
The program continues with a wool-felting workshop. Participants will be able to discover the traditional technique of processing wool and make their own souvenir to take home with them. Such a workshop has a different value from simply buying a souvenir because it involves the visitor in the production process and gives them direct contact with a material strongly associated with the island's livestock-farming tradition. Felting therefore fits into a weekend that offers not only the observation of activities but also participation, whether through cycling, walking, tasting products or practical work.
The historic center of Cres provides a natural setting for such interpretation. According to information from the Tourist Board, the old town is characterized by narrow streets and tall stone houses, while coats of arms on façades and thresholds recall former fishermen, farmers, blacksmiths and other residents. The town was once surrounded by walls, and parts of its defensive system and town gates have been preserved. Today's Frane Petrić Square has remained the central gathering place, so contemporary tourism events take place in a space that has had a public and social function for centuries.
For visitors who wish to stay beyond Sunday's program, weekend accommodation in Cres makes it possible to combine the events with individual exploration of the town, surrounding settlements and natural sites. Since some activities require registration and have precisely scheduled departure times, it is useful to check the schedule immediately before arrival. The organizers of individual outdoor activities reserve the possibility of changing the route or cancelling in the event of unfavorable weather conditions, which is common for programs dependent on conditions in the field.
A weekend presenting tourism as an experience of place, not merely a season
The program from September 25 to 27 combines several layers of Cres's tourism offer that are sometimes overshadowed by the sea and beaches during the height of summer. Local products at Creska butega show the island's economic and gastronomic side, Epic Rides and Cres Hike use the landscape as a setting for active holidays, the Orlec Folklore Society introduces the theme of passing on tradition, while the costumed tour and felting connect history with experiential activities. Together they create a weekend in which the destination is discovered through movement, conversation, taste, music and hands-on participation.
Such a concept also has an important seasonal dimension. A tourism offer based on cultural programs, cycling, hiking, gastronomy and local production is easier to organize outside July and August. This does not mean that a single weekend can change the seasonality of tourism, but it shows a direction in which activities can expand into periods when crowds are smaller and the experience of the place is different. The Cres Tourist Board's Annual Program explicitly connects Epic Rides with overnight stays and local spending, confirming that active programs also have an economic role.
At the same time, the local World Tourism Day 2026 program is a reminder that technological changes, which are at the center of this year's global UN Tourism theme, do not diminish the importance of physical space and authentic contact with a destination. Digital tools may change the way travelers plan, book and discover journeys, but the experience on the ground continues to be based on the places, people and activities they encounter after arriving. On Cres, during the last weekend of September, this idea will take concrete form through several very different activities, from a DJ performance and a local products fair to a cycling climb, a folklore anniversary and a quieter walk through nature and history.
The last weekend of September therefore presents Cres in several roles at once: as a town with a historic center, an island of demanding cycling routes, a setting for hiking excursions, a place of living folklore customs and a destination where local products remain an important part of its identity. Visitors can choose the active, cultural or gastronomic part of the program, while those who stay for all three days can combine them into a complete experience. It is precisely this possibility of combining different activities that is the main value of the weekend dedicated to World Tourism Day.
