Kid Cudi returned to Kanye West onstage in Chicago and defended their reconciliation after years of public feuds
Kid Cudi surprised the audience on September 4, 2026, during the second of Ye's two nights at Soldier Field in Chicago, where he performed again alongside his former mentor, collaborator and friend for the first time in a long period. The appearance carried additional weight because Scott Mescudi, known as Kid Cudi, had publicly said as recently as August 2025 that their relationship had suffered damage from which he saw no way back. After the concert, he faced criticism for his decision to stand alongside Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, again, and responded that he considers their nearly two-decade bond a family relationship and that reconciliation does not mean he has ignored his collaborator's previous actions.
Ye held two major comeback nights at Soldier Field on September 3 and 4, a stadium that also carried symbolic value for him because of his deep connection to Chicago, the city where he grew up and where his musical rise began. Pitchfork reported that these were his first performances in his hometown since 2021, while the official tour website confirms both September dates. The second night was particularly marked by a series of guest appearances by artists from different phases of his career: Big Sean, 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, Travis Scott, Young Thug, Don Toliver, Chief Keef, Twista, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Consequence, GLC, CyHi and others appeared. Within that lineup, Cudi's arrival onstage was one of the most anticipated moments because their musical partnership has for decades been both extraordinarily influential and highly unstable.
A return through songs that define their shared history
According to the published set list and reports from the concert, Cudi joined Ye toward the end of the second night. Together they performed “Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1” and “Ghost Town”, two tracks that clearly recall periods of their most productive collaboration, after which Cudi also performed his hit “Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare)”. The choice of songs is difficult to view as accidental: “Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1” appears on Ye's 2016 album “The Life of Pablo”, while “Ghost Town”, from the 2018 album “Ye”, is one of the key recordings from the period in which the two musicians once again brought their creative paths closer together. A few days after the performance, their renewed appearance on the same stage emerged as the main topic beyond the concert itself.
Cudi's arrival fit into the broader concept of the Chicago concerts, which functioned as a cross-section of more than two decades of Ye's discography and his network of collaborators. Big Sean and 2 Chainz returned with songs such as “Clique” and “Mercy”, Twista recalled the early phase of Ye's career through “Slow Jamz” and “Overnight Celebrity”, while Common and Lupe Fiasco provided an additional link to Chicago's hip-hop scene. Chief Keef represented a different generation of the city's rap, while Travis Scott, Young Thug and Don Toliver showed how far Ye's circle of collaborators had expanded beyond artists associated with his former G.O.O.D. Music label. In precisely that context, Cudi's performance was not simply another guest appearance, but the return of one of the most important figures in Ye's creative history.
Cudi responded to critics: reconciliation does not mean forgetting
After the performance, the discussion quickly moved to social media. Radio host and DJ Peter Rosenberg criticized public support for artists who appeared alongside Ye, pointing to his recent history of antisemitism, Nazi symbolism and the 2025 song “Heil Hitler”. Cudi responded that he understood Rosenberg's frustration, but that their relationship could not be reduced to the judgment of an observer who does not personally know Ye. In his message, he emphasized that he sees Ye as a brother, referred to nearly two decades of friendship and joint creative work, and said that he had been among the people who called him out most strongly when he believed it was necessary.
The most important part of Cudi's response was his claim that forgiveness did not come without accountability. According to him, Ye apologized to him, and he perceived the apology as sincere. Cudi also said that in their current conversations Ye seems closer to the person he knew at the beginning of their collaboration, and he linked their earlier conflicts to long-standing mental health problems. Such an assessment remains Cudi's personal impression and does not represent independent medical confirmation of Ye's current health condition. The public debate surrounding their reconciliation therefore contains two separate levels: Cudi's decision to restore a private relationship with someone he considers family, and the broader question of public accountability for an artist whose actions in recent years have had serious social and professional consequences.
From G.O.O.D. Music to the Kids See Ghosts project
The relationship between Kid Cudi and Ye began long before their most famous disputes. According to earlier reports about Cudi's career, Ye took more serious notice of his work after the 2008 mixtape “A Kid Named Cudi”, and Cudi signed with G.O.O.D. Music that same year. He soon participated in work on the album “808s & Heartbreak”, one of the landmark releases of Ye's career, on which he was credited as a writer on several songs. That early period created a mentor-protégé relationship, but also a creative partnership in which Cudi's melodic, introspective approach became an important part of the broader shift in the sound of mainstream hip-hop at the time.
Cudi left G.O.O.D. Music in 2013 to focus on his own label and projects, but the departure was not presented at the time as the end of their friendship. Their collaboration continued afterward, with occasional tensions, and reached its peak in 2018 when, as the duo Kids See Ghosts, they released the self-titled seven-track album. The Recording Academy presented the project at the time as a joint release by the two longtime collaborators, and the album arrived just one week after Ye's solo release “Ye”. The song “Reborn” from that project remained for years one of the most recognizable symbols of their creative alliance, which became especially significant in April 2026, when Cudi publicly dedicated a performance of it to Ye during his own tour.
Public rifts in 2016 and 2022
Their closeness, however, was never linear. In September 2016, Cudi criticized several major names in the rap scene on social media, including Ye and Drake, questioning the authenticity of their work and their reliance on other writers. Ye then responded to him from the stage, and the dispute became one of the most visible clashes between the two previously close collaborators. That same autumn, Cudi publicly announced that he was entering treatment for depression and suicidal urges, after which he received support from numerous colleagues, including Ye. Their relationship later improved again, opening the way for collaborations that culminated in the Kids See Ghosts project.
A much deeper rift occurred in early 2022. Ye then announced that Cudi would not participate in the “Donda 2” project because of his friendship with comedian Pete Davidson, who at the time was in a relationship with Kim Kardashian. Pitchfork recorded that Cudi replied that they had already discussed the issue privately and publicly stated that Ye was no longer his friend. The conflict then escalated through a series of social media posts and became part of the broader public campaign Ye was waging against Davidson. Cudi later said in interviews that such a relationship had a negative effect on him and presented distancing himself as a necessary boundary rather than a temporary business disagreement.
As recently as 2025, Cudi said there was no way back
Just how unexpected the current reconciliation is can be seen in Cudi's August 2025 interview with CBS News. Speaking at the time about their long and complicated relationship, he said that Ye had broken his heart several times as a friend and that some of his statements had crossed a line after which he saw no possibility of returning. He particularly highlighted Ye's comments about the late designer Virgil Abloh, who had been an important collaborator and friend to both artists. Cudi said at the time that he no longer recognized the person he once considered a close friend, making it appear that their creative and private partnership had come to an end.
The change became more clearly visible during 2026. At the opening of his Rebel Ragers tour on April 28 in Phoenix, Cudi dedicated the song “Reborn” to Ye and urged the audience to sing it loudly enough for him to “hear” it. In July, responding to a fan on the social network X, he then wrote that the two of them were “rebuilding their friendship”. According to Cudi's description, they were not discussing business at that point: he contacted Ye to check how he was doing, and Ye later reached out to him with the same intention. Cudi also left open the possibility of future musical collaboration at the time, but emphasized that the focus was on rebuilding their personal relationship. The Soldier Field performance less than two months later was the first major public evidence that this process had progressed considerably further.
Why Ye's return continues to provoke strong reactions
Cudi's decision to publicly stand alongside Ye cannot be separated from the controversies that have followed West in recent years. Since 2022, Ye has repeatedly faced widespread condemnation over antisemitic statements, and during 2025 he caused further outrage by selling a T-shirt featuring a swastika and releasing the song “Heil Hitler”. Australian authorities revoked his visa in July 2025, specifically citing that song in explaining the review of his status. In April 2026, British authorities withdrew his electronic travel authorization, after which the London Wireless Festival, where he was scheduled to perform all three nights, was canceled. Reuters and British media reported that the decision was made in the context of his antisemitic statements and glorification of Nazism.
On January 26, 2026, Ye published an apology to the people he had hurt in a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal. In the letter, he linked his behavior to bipolar disorder and described a prolonged manic episode during 2025, while at the same time writing that the diagnosis did not excuse what he had done. He said that he regretted his actions, that he was receiving treatment and that he wanted to take responsibility and achieve real change. That apology did not erase the consequences of his earlier actions or stop the criticism, as was also evident several months later in the United Kingdom. That is precisely why Rosenberg's reaction to the Chicago concert was directed not only at the private relationship between the two musicians, but also at the question of how quickly the industry reaccepts a public figure after a series of serious incidents.
Chicago as a stage for reconciliation, but not for erasing the past
For Ye, the two nights at Soldier Field were more than a standard concert stop. After years in which his tours, business relationships and public appearances were marked by controversies and cancellations, Chicago offered a stage on which a large number of people from different chapters of his career reunited. Pitchfork noted that artists associated with the early G.O.O.D. Music years, Chicago rap legends and stars of newer generations performed alongside him. Such a concentration of former collaborators created the impression of a professional gathering around a musical legacy that remains powerful, regardless of the deep disputes surrounding the person at its center.
Kid Cudi is especially important in that story precisely because he did not hide the scale of his previous disappointment. His return cannot simply be portrayed as a continuation of the collaboration where it left off, because there were multiple public breakups, reconciliations and new conflicts between them. Cudi now argues that he sees forgiveness as the result of a private process in which Ye had to acknowledge his mistakes and apologize, while critics warn that personal reconciliation cannot replace public accountability. Those two claims do not necessarily exclude one another: it is possible for two longtime friends to grow closer again privately while the public simultaneously continues to assess Ye's actions and their seriousness.
The September 4 concert therefore marked an important moment in the relationship between the two artists, but not a final answer to the questions surrounding them. Cudi said in July that they were only beginning to rebuild their friendship, and the Chicago performance showed that he was ready to make that rebuilding public and share the stage with Ye again. At the same time, his defense after the concert shows that he is aware that every future joint step will be viewed through the broader context of Ye's previous statements and actions. Whether the reconciliation will also turn into a new studio collaboration has not yet been officially confirmed. What has been confirmed is that Kid Cudi and Ye, after yet another long period of distance, found themselves together again in front of an audience at Soldier Field in the city that decisively shaped Ye's career.
