49ers open season with convincing win in Melbourne: Rams fall 27-7 in front of 100,021 spectators
The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the historic first NFL regular-season game played in Australia. In front of 100,021 spectators, the seventh-largest attendance for a regular-season game in league history, quarterback Brock Purdy led San Francisco with 205 passing yards and three touchdown passes. The game, played on September 11, 2026, in Melbourne, also carried strong symbolic importance for the NFL, which is staging its most extensive international program to date this season.
With the victory, San Francisco immediately moved to 1-0 in the new season and also gained an early advantage in the head-to-head battle between the NFC West division rivals. Los Angeles opened the season at 0-1, and the manner in which the team lost was just as important as the result itself: the Rams scored only one touchdown, went scoreless over the final three quarters and produced 290 total yards. According to official NFL statistics, the 49ers finished with 379 yards and controlled the ball for 33 minutes and 50 seconds, compared with 26:10 of possession for Los Angeles. San Francisco also recorded 174 rushing yards, allowing it to maintain a balance between the ground game and passing attack while keeping the Rams defense on the field for long stretches.
Purdy took control after a slow start
The game began cautiously, which was not unexpected given the morning kickoff in Melbourne and the exceptionally demanding journey both teams made across the Pacific. San Francisco scored the first points midway through the first quarter when kicker Eddy Piñeiro made a 20-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. The Rams answered early in the second quarter after Matthew Stafford found Puka Nacua for a 41-yard completion, and Kyren Williams then ran five yards for the first NFL touchdown scored in a regular-season game on Australian soil. Los Angeles thus took a 7-3 lead, but those would prove to be its final points of the game.
Both teams made one major mistake during the second quarter. Rams safety Quentin Lake intercepted Purdy's pass intended for George Kittle, but Los Angeles failed to capitalize because San Francisco cornerback Renardo Green soon intercepted Stafford's deep pass intended for Nacua. That turnover changed the rhythm of the game. Purdy then found Demarcus Robinson for a 39-yard touchdown, completing an 86-yard drive that put the 49ers back in front 10-7, and they took that score into halftime.
Purdy played very efficiently for the remainder of the game. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, spreading his touchdown passes among three different receivers. In addition to Robinson, Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel scored. Evans caught six passes for 49 yards in his first official appearance for San Francisco, while Samuel had six receptions for 48 yards, along with an important contribution in the return game.
Key moment: defense stopped Stafford at the one-yard line
The 49ers opened the second half very aggressively. Samuel returned the kickoff 46 yards to midfield, and several plays later Purdy found Evans in the end zone for a two-yard touchdown that increased the lead to 17-7. The drive further demonstrated how successfully San Francisco used different options on offense. Christian McCaffrey finished with 68 yards on ten carries, rookie Kaelon Black added 65 on 14 attempts, and Purdy himself gained additional yards on the ground when necessary.
The most important defensive sequence came late in the third quarter. The Rams reached fourth down with a touchdown one yard away, and Stafford tried to push the ball across the line himself. San Francisco's defense stopped him just short of the end zone and returned possession to its offense. According to the 49ers' report, Osa Odighizuwa was credited with the crucial stop. Instead of a possible reduction of the deficit to 17-14, San Francisco followed with a 99-yard drive that ended with Purdy's 15-yard touchdown pass to Samuel and a 24-7 lead early in the final quarter.
That sequence practically decided the game. According to the Associated Press report, the Rams were at one point only a few centimeters away from a touchdown, but after the defensive stop the 49ers went almost the entire length of the field and scored seven points at the opposite end. Such a swing on the field also had a strong psychological effect: Los Angeles came away empty-handed after one of its best drives, while San Francisco further strengthened its control over both the score and the clock.
Warner's return marked by a record and forced fumble
San Francisco's defense was one of the main reasons for the convincing victory. Matthew Stafford, the reigning NFL MVP, finished according to the official statistics with 15 completions on 25 attempts for 155 yards, no touchdown passes and one interception. Puka Nacua was his most productive receiver with five catches for 74 yards, but the Rams failed to turn several promising drives into points. Stafford remained on the bench late in the game, and Los Angeles' final drive was led by Stetson Bennett IV.
Linebacker Fred Warner particularly stood out after returning from a lengthy absence caused by an ankle injury. The 49ers state that Warner finished with 11 total tackles and passed Patrick Willis to become the franchise's career leader in tackles. In the fourth quarter he knocked the ball loose from tight end Tyler Higbee, and Keion White recovered it for San Francisco. The possession following that turnover ended with Piñeiro's 56-yard field goal for the final 27-7 score.
Warner's return was not the only important news for the 49ers defense. Nick Bosa also returned after a serious injury from the previous season and immediately generated pressure on Stafford. In its analysis of the game, the NFL highlighted that San Francisco allowed only seven points and 290 total yards against an offense that had been among the league's best the previous season, while forcing two Rams turnovers and stopping them on two of three fourth-down attempts. In Raheem Morris' first official game as the 49ers' defensive coordinator, his unit gave the impression of an organized and physically prepared defense.
Rams failed to capitalize on reinforcements or the running game
Los Angeles entered the game with high expectations after a strong previous season and a very active period of roster building. Particular attention before the game was directed toward Myles Garrett, the reigning AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year, who arrived from the Cleveland Browns during the offseason. In his debut for the Rams, however, he did not record a tackle, and after the game he admitted that a knee problem was limiting him. The Associated Press reported that Garrett missed part of the preparation period because of health issues and was unable in Melbourne to produce the level of play to which he is accustomed.
The Rams nevertheless had some positive elements, particularly in the running game. Blake Corum had 54 yards on ten carries, while Kyren Williams gained 41 yards on 11 attempts, giving the pair a total of 95 yards. The problem was that Los Angeles could not finish drives or maintain continuity after good plays. The team punted twice in the first quarter, something the NFL identified as an unusual start for an offense that had been very efficient the previous season.
San Francisco, on the other hand, received enough time from its offensive line. According to the team's report, Purdy was not sacked once in 34 passing attempts, and eight different players caught at least one of his passes. Protecting the quarterback was particularly important against a Rams defense that, on paper, had enough individual quality to generate pressure. The combination of stable protection, productive rushing and several big pass plays enabled the 49ers to score 24 unanswered points after initially trailing 3-7.
Two completely different travel strategies to Australia
In addition to the result, one of the main topics after the game became the way the two teams organized their trips to Australia. San Francisco arrived in Melbourne approximately one week before the game, while the Rams arrived on Thursday morning, about 28 hours before kickoff. The Associated Press and the NFL reported that the 49ers used the time to adjust to the time zone, practice and become familiar with the city, while Los Angeles tried to maintain a routine as close as possible to California time and shorten its stay on the other side of the world.
Rams coach Sean McVay did not accept the argument after the loss that the late arrival was the main reason for the poor performance. According to his statement reported by ABC Australia and the Associated Press, he said he did not believe the travel plan decided the game, but at the same time accepted responsibility for the decision and announced that he would analyze what could have been done better. The contrast was particularly visible because 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and his team chose the completely opposite approach.
For the NFL, that difference could be important beyond this single game. International games involve increasingly distant destinations, so the method of acclimatization is becoming as much a part of sporting preparation as practice or the game plan. In Melbourne, San Francisco's earlier arrival ended with a convincing victory, but it is not possible to draw a definitive conclusion about the optimal travel model from one game. Nevertheless, the result will likely become a reference point for other teams that play in Australia and other distant markets in the future.
100,021 spectators and a place among the largest crowds in NFL history
The attendance figure was one of the most important statistics of the entire event. The NFL announced that 100,021 people were at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, only a few seats short of the stadium's official capacity. According to league statistics, that is the seventh-largest attendance for a regular-season game in NFL history and only the fourth game since 2000 to surpass the 100,000-spectator mark. Among regular-season games played outside the United States, a larger crowd was recorded for the 49ers' game against the Arizona Cardinals at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City in 2005, when 103,467 people attended.
The MCG itself is one of the largest and best-known sporting arenas in the Southern Hemisphere, and the game began at 10:35 local time so that it could fit into an evening television slot in the United States. Despite the unusual weekday morning start, the stands were almost completely full. The MCG thereby added another major international event alongside cricket and Australian football, while Melbourne hosted an official NFL regular-season game for the first time.
The government of the Australian state of Victoria also presented the event as a significant tourism and economic project. An official release published on September 11 cited an estimate that the event and related activities could generate more than 300 million Australian dollars for the local economy. The same source stated that the Netflix broadcast was available in nearly 200 countries, with a potential reach of up to 325 million platform subscribers. These are estimates from the organizers and the Victorian authorities, but they clearly demonstrate why the NFL viewed such an event as much more than a single game.
Australia part of the NFL's largest international plan to date
Melbourne opened the NFL's record international program for the 2026 season. According to NFL Football Operations, the league scheduled nine games outside the United States this season, spread across four continents, seven countries and eight stadiums. Along with Melbourne, the host cities are Rio de Janeiro, London, Paris, Madrid, Munich and Mexico City. Before the start of the 2026 season, 62 regular-season games had already been played outside the United States, while Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro and Paris are new host cities this year.
Even before the Australian premiere, the NFL emphasized that Melbourne was not envisioned as a one-off project. The league has a multi-year agreement with Visit Victoria, and its executive vice president Peter O'Reilly stated in early September that the NFL views Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific region as a long-term project and wants to stage games regularly. At the same time, there are logistical questions surrounding future dates, especially because of overlap with the final stages of the Australian Football League season at the MCG, but for now the league is making no secret of its ambition to continue building its presence in that market.
The 49ers' victory therefore entered history on two levels. From a sporting perspective, San Francisco opened the season with a convincing win over an important division rival and showed that after injury problems it can once again rely on key players such as Warner and Bosa. From an organizational perspective, the NFL had an almost completely full stadium in Australia with a six-figure crowd and an event that fits into the league's increasingly aggressive international strategy.
Both teams now return to the United States to continue the regular season. According to the schedule published by the Associated Press, the 49ers will host the Miami Dolphins on September 20 in their first home game of the season, while the Rams will host the New York Giants on September 21. San Francisco returns with a 1-0 record and a victory that will be remembered as the first in an NFL regular-season game on Australian soil; Los Angeles returns with a series of questions about its offense, defense and preparation for one of the longest road trips in professional sports.
