Alejo Sarco leaves Bayer Leverkusen and signs for Sporting Gijón, German club retains buy-back right
Argentine striker Alejo Sarco is continuing his career in Spain after moving from Bayer 04 Leverkusen to Sporting Gijón on 21 July 2026. The German club officially confirmed the permanent transfer of the 20-year-old centre-forward to the team competing in the second tier of Spanish football, with an important addition to the agreement: Bayer retained the option to bring the player back in the future under predefined conditions. The financial details of the deal were not publicly disclosed, while Bayer's confirmation of the transfer did not include a complete overview of the contract's duration and other contractual provisions. Nevertheless, the structure of the transfer clearly demonstrates that those in Leverkusen have not completely abandoned their assessment that Sarco can reach a significantly higher level. Instead of another loan, a solution was chosen that gives the young striker room for a more stable role, while leaving the German club with the possibility of becoming involved in his career again.
Bayer sporting director Simon Rolfes explained that, during approximately a year and a half in Leverkusen, Sarco did not receive the amount of playing time required by a player of his age. According to Rolfes' statement, the move to Spain should allow him to accumulate important competitive minutes, while Bayer will continue to monitor his development closely. Such an explanation confirms that the transfer was not presented as the termination of a project, but as an attempt to develop the talent in an environment where the path to the first team will be more open. Sporting are getting a young striker with Bundesliga experience and international appearances for Argentina's youth national teams, while Sarco is receiving the opportunity to no longer be viewed merely as an investment for the future. In Gijón, he will be expected to turn potential into consistency, performance and tangible value for the team.
His arrival in Leverkusen was accompanied by the status of one of the more interesting Argentine strikers of his generation
Sarco joined Bayer at the beginning of 2025 from Vélez Sarsfield, the club whose academy played an important part in his football development and from which he stepped into senior football. Leverkusen presented him at the time as a promising central striker and tied him to a contract until the summer of 2029, demonstrating that this was a long-term investment rather than a player brought in to fill an immediate gap in the squad. In its introduction, Bayer highlighted his dynamism, physical strength, speed and highly developed left foot, qualities that had made him interesting to the European market even before he turned 20. The loan to Borussia Mönchengladbach did not produce the expected change in playing time
Borussia Mönchengladbach brought Sarco in on loan on 20 January 2026 until 30 June of the same year. In its official announcement, the club described him as a talented, physically strong and quick striker who seeks direct duels, has a good instinct for goal and possesses a powerful left foot. Bayer emphasised at the time that the most important objective of the loan was to gain experience at Bundesliga level. Nevertheless, the second German environment also failed to open a path towards a permanent and stable role in the starting line-up. According to figures cited by Spanish media ahead of his departure for Spain, Sarco made a total of six Bundesliga appearances in the 2025/2026 season, three each for Bayer and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Such a development explains why all parties sought a different solution during the summer of 2026. A new loan could once again have left the question of his long-term status unresolved, while a permanent transfer allows Sporting to include Sarco in their own project without the feeling that they are merely developing a player temporarily for another club. For the footballer himself, the change of country and competition marks the end of a period in which his season consisted largely of waiting for an opportunity. The Spanish second division demands physical endurance, tactical discipline and the ability to play against different defensive blocks, but it simultaneously offers Sporting more matches and a more realistic opportunity to introduce the striker gradually into a more important role. Four goals at the U-20 World Cup confirmed his international potential
The clearest evidence of Sarco's finishing ability at a high youth international level came at the U-20 World Cup held in Chile from 27 September to 19 October 2025. According to FIFA data, Argentina reached the final, while Sarco scored four goals during the tournament and was among their most important strikers. He scored twice in the opening 3-1 victory against Cuba, which was also confirmed by the Argentine Football Association. Argentina then progressed through the group with a perfect record, continued through the knockout stage and reached the title match, in which Morocco won 2-0 and claimed their first world championship title in this category. Sarco's contribution remained one of the more important individual stories of Argentina's performance at the tournament.
During the championship, FIFA presented him as a clinical striker and the leading scorer of the Argentine team ahead of the closing stages of the competition. Four goals at a global tournament do not guarantee success in senior club football, but they confirm that Sarco possesses the ability to enter finishing positions at the right time and convert chances under pressure. His developmental challenge now is to transfer those qualities into the weekly rhythm of a professional league, where opposing defenders have more experience and the space for a shot is considerably smaller. Sporting are not signing a completely unknown prospect, but a player who has already shown that he can be important in a team playing matches with major competitive stakes. At the same time, his modest number of senior minutes warns that he should not be expected to provide an immediate and automatic solution to every attacking problem.
Sporting Gijón seek attacking competition for the new season
Sporting enter the 2026/2027 season as a member of LALIGA HYPERMOTION, the official name of Spain's second tier. It is a competition with a long season, a large number of evenly matched teams and strong pressure for results, particularly at clubs with a history of playing in the top division. For Leverkusen, it is a way of reducing sporting risk: Sarco leaves the squad and receives a new environment, while Bayer retain a mechanism through which they can sign him again if he confirms his quality in Spain. For Sporting, the deal is attractive because they receive the player on a permanent transfer, can integrate him into their own system and use him without the restrictions typical of conventional loans. The key task will be to turn occasional flashes into senior-level consistency
Sarco arrives in Gijón at a sensitive but important stage of his career. At the age of 20, he still has enough time to develop, but behind him is a period in which a large part of the assessment was based on potential, appearances for youth national teams and brief episodes in the Bundesliga. The next step must bring measurable progress in senior football. For a centre-forward, that does not mean only the number of goals, but also the ability to hold up the ball, connect the lines, create space for teammates, participate in pressing and adapt to different match rhythms. In the Spanish second division, he will face teams that often close the central areas and force strikers into patient off-the-ball movement.
Sporting will have to find a balance between development and immediate demands for results. A club that wants to remain competitive in the battle for the upper part of the table cannot allow a young player unlimited mistakes, but must simultaneously give him enough time to establish the rhythm he did not have in Germany. Sarco's advantage is that he has already experienced training sessions and matches in a demanding Bundesliga environment and felt the pressure of an international tournament. His disadvantage is the small sample of senior appearances, which means he still has to prove whether he can repeat his strongest qualities from week to week. The first months at Sporting will therefore be more important than the symbolism of the transfer itself.
For Bayer, his departure is a logical conclusion to a period in which the planned development did not progress at the desired speed. For Sporting, it is an investment in a player whose market and sporting ceiling may be significantly higher than his current role. For Sarco, the transfer is the most important opportunity of his European career so far to leave the category of a promising striker and build the identity of a reliable professional. Rolfes' message that Leverkusen will closely monitor his progress further emphasises that the German club's door is not completely closed. Whether the possibility of a return ever turns into an actual move will depend primarily on how much Sarco plays in Gijón and how convincingly he uses the minutes for which this transfer was agreed.
