Exequiel Palacios leaves Bayer Leverkusen and signs for Ipswich Town: world champion moves to the Premier League
Exequiel Palacios is leaving Bayer 04 Leverkusen after six and a half years and will continue his career at Ipswich Town, a new member of the English Premier League. The transfer of the 27-year-old Argentinian midfielder was confirmed on 27 August 2026, and Ipswich announced that it had signed the player to a contract until the summer of 2030. Palacios' previous contract with Bayer was valid until 30 June 2030, meaning he left Leverkusen four years before it expired. The clubs did not officially disclose the transfer fee. Palacios thus closes one of the most important chapters of his club career, during which he grew from a young South American talent into an internationally established midfielder, German champion and regular member of the Argentina national team. He arrives in England just a few weeks after finishing second with Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, while his résumé already includes the world champion title from Qatar 2022.
Bayer presented his departure as the result of the player's desire to test himself in the Premier League after a successful period in the Bundesliga. Bayer sporting director and board member Simon Rolfes emphasized that Palacios had demonstrated his footballing quality over the years in Leverkusen, while also earning great respect within the team and the club. The Argentinian himself said goodbye with a message in which he stressed that it was at Bayer that he matured as a footballer and that the club gave him the trust necessary for his development. His departure is therefore not just another transfer at the end of the summer transfer window, but also the conclusion of a period in which he took part in the most successful era in the history of the Leverkusen club.
From River Plate to one of Bayer's most important midfielders
Palacios arrived in Leverkusen in January 2020 from River Plate, the club where he came through the youth academy and established himself in senior football. With the Argentinian giants, he won the Copa Libertadores in 2018, and even then he was regarded as one of the more promising midfielders of his generation in South America. The move to the Bundesliga was his first major European step and required him to adapt to a different pace, intensity and tactical demands. Bayer's official figures state that he made 186 appearances for the club and scored 15 goals, with more than 30 direct goal contributions. Although his value to the team was never limited solely to goal and assist statistics, the number of appearances shows how long he remained relevant in the squad through changes of coaches, systems and competition.
As a right-footed central midfielder, Palacios most often operated over the years in the area between defence and attack, combining aggression without the ball with enough technical security to play under pressure. Bayer described him in its profiles as a player who combines intensity in duels with creativity, and that profile particularly came to the fore in teams that sought to control midfield without losing dynamism. His role often included closing down space, winning second balls and quickly linking the lines after a change of possession. His playing time was not the same in every season, but through different phases of the team he regularly remained an important option in the rotation. He leaves with experience of playing in the Bundesliga, European competitions and for the national team at the biggest tournaments.
The historic 2023/24 season remains the central part of his legacy
The greatest club success of Palacios' period in Germany came in the 2023/24 season, when Bayer Leverkusen became Bundesliga champions for the first time in its history. According to official figures from the German league, Xabi Alonso's team finished the league season without a single defeat, with 28 wins and six draws in 34 rounds, becoming the first club in Bundesliga history to complete an entire league season unbeaten. Bayer then also won the DFB-Pokal and completed a domestic double, while its unbeaten run in all competitions reached a record 51 matches before defeat to Atalanta in the Europa League final. Palacios was part of that team and thus linked his development in Leverkusen with a period that permanently changed the club's status in German football.
The Argentinian also had several memorable moments that season. In September 2023, he converted a penalty deep into stoppage time for a 2:2 draw away to Bayern in Munich, in a match that already showed that Leverkusen could compete on equal terms with Germany's long-time dominant force. In January 2024, he scored the winning goal against Augsburg in the fourth minute of stoppage time, allowing Bayer to retain the leading position in the league. Such details illustrate his role well: he was not the team's most prominent attacking figure, but in key moments he could provide control, solidity or a direct result. Bayer also won the German Super Cup in August 2024, the third trophy of that successful cycle.
World champion in 2022, runner-up in 2026 and two-time Copa América winner
Palacios also arrives at Ipswich with experience rarely available to a club that has just returned to the Premier League. He was a member of the Argentina national team that won the World Cup in Qatar on 18 December 2022 after the final against France. FIFA states that, after 3:3 following extra time, Argentina won the penalty shootout 4:2 and claimed its third world title. Palacios was part of Lionel Scaloni's winning squad, and during the national-team cycle he also took part in winning the Copa América in 2021 and defending the title in 2024. After the 2024 tournament, Bayer pointed out that this was Palacios' third consecutive major international trophy.
Four years after Qatar, Argentina once again reached the final at the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States of America. FIFA confirmed that on 19 July 2026, in the final in New York/New Jersey, Spain defeated Argentina 1:0 after extra time thanks to Ferran Torres' goal in the 106th minute. Palacios was a member of the Argentinian squad at the tournament, although he did not enter the match in the final itself. He therefore arrives in England immediately after another long international summer and with experience of two consecutive World Cup finals. For Ipswich, precisely this combination of competitive experience and an age at which a midfielder can still offer several seasons at a high level is an important part of the value of this deal.
Ipswich rebuilds for the Premier League after an immediate return
Palacios' new club enters the 2026/27 season as a returning member of the English top flight. The Premier League confirms that Ipswich secured promotion from the Championship together with Coventry City and Hull City, just one year after being relegated from the top division at the end of the 2024/25 season. In a short period, the club thus went through two promotions to the Premier League, with one season in the second tier between them. Kieran McKenna, the coach who led Ipswich through its rise in recent years, left his role in June 2026, after which the team was taken over by Gary O'Neil. The official Premier League website states that O'Neil was appointed on 23 June, following previous coaching spells at Bournemouth, Wolverhampton and Strasbourg.
The new coaching staff and management significantly reshaped the squad during the summer in order to adapt the team to the demands of the Premier League. Palacios' arrival is particularly important because he brings to midfield experience of playing under pressure for a club that competed for the biggest trophies and for a national team that had been at the very top of world football for years. In that sense, his profile is not a typical signing for a newly promoted club whose primary goal is stabilization, but rather that of a player who already has a world title, a German championship and experience of European knockout matches behind him. Ipswich officially announced that the transfer fee was undisclosed, so estimates that appeared in the media should be treated as unofficial. What is certain, however, is that the four-year contract until 2030 signals that the club sees him as part of a medium-term project rather than a short-term solution.
Ipswich opened the new league season with a 2:1 home victory over Sunderland. The Premier League recorded that Jack Clarke scored the decisive goal in the 90th minute, giving Gary O'Neil's team three points immediately in its returning season. Palacios signed a few days after that match, so his integration into the team will take place while the season is already underway. According to the current Premier League schedule, Ipswich visit Manchester United at Old Trafford on 30 August and host Liverpool on 4 September. The early schedule therefore immediately sets a high level of demands for the new midfielder and the entire team.
Why Palacios' profile matters in the English league
The Premier League requires midfielders to be able to make decisions at a high tempo, possess physical resilience and maintain discipline in defensive transition, and these are areas in which Palacios has already gained considerable experience in Germany. His greatest value for Ipswich could be that he does not need to have a dominant role on the ball in order to influence a match. He can play alongside a deeper-lying midfielder, take on part of the work in pressing and duels, while also helping the team avoid losing possession with the first pass after winning the ball. In matches against technically and individually stronger opponents, such stability often determines whether a newly promoted club can remain compact throughout all 90 minutes. In matches in which Ipswich have more possession, his experience of positional play can help maintain structure and recover the ball more quickly after possession is lost.
At the same time, the move from the Bundesliga to the Premier League brings a new test. The English league has a different dynamic, a large number of teams with exceptionally strong individual players and a schedule in which physical demands accumulate quickly. For Palacios, it will therefore be important to quickly find his rhythm and maintain continuity of appearances in a league that leaves little room for prolonged periods of adaptation. His contract until 2030 gives Ipswich room to integrate him without the need to judge the entire success of the transfer through the first few weeks. For the 27-year-old player, meanwhile, it is an opportunity to spend the best years of his career in a league that, according to Bayer's announcement, he had wanted to experience for some time.
An emotional farewell to Leverkusen after six and a half years
The way both the club and the player presented the separation shows that the transfer is not the result of a public conflict or a breakdown in relations. Rolfes said in Bayer's announcement that the club was granting Palacios his great wish to prove himself in the Premier League after a successful period in the Bundesliga. He added that the Argentinian had earned great respect in the dressing room and throughout the organization through his behaviour and performances. Palacios, in return, stressed that he had "grown up as a footballer" in Leverkusen, that the club trusted him and enabled him to develop the qualities that define his game today. He also said that he would remain connected with former teammates, employees and supporters and that he would continue to follow Bayer's matches.
Such a farewell carries additional weight because of the length of his stay. In modern European football, six and a half years at the same club represents a significant portion of a professional career, especially for a player who arrived in Leverkusen at the age of 21. During that period, Palacios went from adapting to European football to winning the domestic double and achieving the status of world champion. The final part of his stay in Germany ended after his return from the 2026 World Cup, where Argentina finished as runner-up, and by the end of August a new chapter had already opened in England. For Bayer, his departure means losing a long-standing member of the midfield; for Ipswich, it means the arrival of a player who should raise the team's experience and competitive level.
The transfer is also a symbolic link between two very different moments for the clubs. Leverkusen says goodbye to a footballer who was part of a historic generation and who reached with the club a level that only a few years earlier would have been difficult to predict. Ipswich, on the other hand, is trying after its return to the Premier League to build a squad capable of avoiding another rapid fall into the Championship. Palacios will be one of the most experienced new elements in that story, but also a player expected to transfer the quality he demonstrated in Germany into a different environment. His first season in England will therefore be important both for the continuation of his personal career and for the ambitions of a club trying to establish its place among the English elite.
