Liverpool intensifies interest in Yan Diomande, Leipzig still without a concrete offer
Liverpool has, according to available information from English media reports, intensified its interest in Yan Diomande, the 19-year-old winger of RB Leipzig who, after his first season in the Bundesliga, has established himself as one of the most sought-after young players on the European market. The Anfield club has already examined the conditions of a possible deal and contacted Leipzig, but as of 15 June 2026 it has not been officially confirmed that a formal offer has been sent. In Liverpool’s club review of media reports at the beginning of June, Sky Sports’ information was relayed that the Reds had approached Leipzig regarding a possible transfer of the Ivory Coast international. Such information remains, for now, in the sphere of market reports because neither Liverpool nor RB Leipzig has announced the start of negotiations over a fee or an agreement between the clubs.
Diomande is in focus because of a profile that Liverpool currently lacks after the end of one of the most important eras in the club’s recent history. Liverpool officially confirmed that Mohamed Salah is leaving the club after the 2025/26 season, and then it was stated in the retained list for the Premier League that Salah, Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konaté and Rhys Williams will leave the senior squad this summer. The departure of the Egyptian forward has opened the question of a long-term solution on the right side of the attack, but also of a broader renewal of the attacking line. In that context, Diomande is mentioned as a player who could bring speed, verticality and developmental potential, although in official and statistical profiles he is most often listed as a left winger.
Contact exists, but the deal is far from simple
The most important difference in the current situation is the one between interest and an actual transfer process. According to reports that appeared in England and Germany, Liverpool has taken the initial step and inquired about the possibility of signing Diomande, while Paris Saint-Germain is also cited as a serious competitor. Still, the available information does not indicate that RB Leipzig has accepted negotiations over a sale or that the player has requested a departure. That is an important detail because, during the summer transfer window, real contacts, agents’ assessments, clubs’ market positioning and concrete offers that can be accepted or rejected are often mixed together.
Leipzig has a very strong negotiating position in this story. The German club brought Diomande from CD Leganés in July 2025, and according to Leipzig’s official announcement he signed a contract until 30 June 2030. Such a contract practically means that Leipzig is not under pressure to sell, unless an offer appears that would financially change the club’s plans. Transfermarkt currently estimates his market value at 90 million euros, while some market reports state that Leipzig could demand a significantly higher amount, even around 130 million euros, for serious consideration of a sale. Since none of those figures is an official release clause confirmed by the clubs, they should be viewed as market estimates and negotiating signals.
For Liverpool, such a deal would be a strategic decision, not just a tactical one. Signing a teenager for an amount that would come close to record transfers carries a high level of risk, especially when the player is being brought in as a potential replacement for a forward of Salah’s status. On the other hand, the market for young wingers with a high level of production in one of Europe’s strongest leagues is very limited. That is precisely why Diomande’s name is appearing more and more often alongside clubs looking for a player for several seasons, not just a short-term solution for one competitive year.
The season that changed Diomande’s status
Diomande’s rise was extremely rapid. According to RB Leipzig’s official data, he arrived at the club as an 18-year-old from Leganés, after attracting attention with performances in Spain in the final stage of the 2024/25 season. The Bundesliga states that in his first season in the German championship he recorded 33 appearances, 12 goals and eight assists, along with 51 shots at goal and a maximum measured speed of 36.3 kilometres per hour. Those numbers do not only explain why major clubs are interested in him, but also why Leipzig is trying to keep his future under its control. Young wingers who already in their teenage years combine speed, dribbling and concrete finishing rarely remain outside the focus of Europe’s biggest markets.
The Bundesliga named him Rookie of the Season for 2025/26, ahead of Luka Vušković from HSV and Ibrahim Maza from Bayer Leverkusen. That award further increased his visibility because it is not just a matter of the impression of fans or the media, but an official recognition after an entire league campaign. At Leipzig, Diomande had the role of a player who can attack the space behind the defence, but also create superiority in one-on-one situations. His statistics show that he was not just an attractive winger, but also a player with a concrete impact in the final third of the pitch.
In its official transfer announcement, Leipzig emphasised that it sees him as an exceptional talent and part of the club’s attacking future. Such wording is not surprising for a club that has built a reputation in recent years as a developmental environment for young players, but also for a club that sells its biggest talents only when it judges that the sporting and financial moment is right. Diomande’s situation therefore recalls numerous previous cases in which Leipzig did not reject big deals in principle, but also did not force them before the conditions became sufficiently favourable.
Why Liverpool sees him as part of the new attacking picture
Liverpool’s interest logically fits into a period of change at Anfield. Salah’s departure, which the club officially announced in March and confirmed through later farewells and the list of players leaving the squad, leaves a gap that cannot be filled by one identical profile. During nine years, Salah was more than a right winger: he was the main goalscorer, creator, player for big matches and symbol of attacking stability. For that reason, Liverpool is not looking only for a positional replacement, but for a player who can participate long-term in reshaping the attack.
Diomande fits into that framework because of his age and style of play. His speed enables more direct attacks in transition, and the statistics from the Bundesliga show that he was already productive enough in his first season not to be labelled only as a project for the future. Still, the comparison with Salah must remain cautious. Salah left Liverpool as one of the greatest players in the club’s history, while Diomande is only at the beginning of his senior career and has one full season at the highest level behind him. For that reason, Liverpool, in the event of the deal being completed, would probably have to view him as part of a broader attacking structure, not as a player from whom an immediate replication of Salah’s impact is expected.
The question of position is particularly interesting. Diomande is most often described as a left winger, but modern attacking systems require constant rotations from wide players, movements into the middle and changes of side. Liverpool could use him in several ways, depending on the rest of the transfer window and the profile of the players who remain in the squad. If the club truly saw him as a long-term solution on the right side, that would require adaptation and a clear developmental idea, but his age leaves enough room for such a process.
PSG as a competitor and the player’s French context
Paris Saint-Germain is cited in several reports as one of Liverpool’s main competitors. At the beginning of June, ESPN relayed Diomande’s statement that it would be a pleasure for him to play in France and that PSG is a club he has valued since childhood. Such a statement does not mean that a transfer to Paris has been agreed, but it is relevant because it shows that the player is publicly not closing the door to the French champion. In transfer negotiations, a player’s personal preferences can often speed up or slow down a deal, especially when several clubs can offer a comparable sporting and financial level.
PSG’s interest also has sporting logic. The Parisian club regularly monitors young players who can maintain a high level in attack in the long term, and Diomande’s profile suits a club looking for speed, technique and the ability to attack open space. Still, PSG’s competition does not mean that Liverpool is in a less favourable position. The English club can offer a role in an attack undergoing reconstruction, while in Paris Diomande would have to assess his own path to minutes in a squad full of attacking options. At present, it has not been officially confirmed that the player has made a decision about his preferred destination.
Time will also be an important factor. The summer transfer window of 2026 is taking place in a year of major national-team obligations, and Diomande’s visibility could grow further if he appears for the Ivory Coast on a big stage. In such circumstances, clubs often want to complete a deal before an additional price rise, while the seller can wait for the situation to develop and hope for greater bidding. That creates tension between Liverpool’s need to plan the squad and Leipzig’s ability not to rush a decision.
Leipzig’s calculation: keep the talent or accept an exceptional offer
For RB Leipzig this is a classic, but demanding decision. From a sporting perspective, keeping Diomande would enable the continuation of the squad’s development around a player who has already proved that he can be a difference-maker in the Bundesliga. From a financial perspective, a possible offer above the market estimate could open space for new investments and confirm the model in which Leipzig identifies and develops talents early. Still, a sale after only one season would carry the risk of sending a message that the club finds it difficult to keep its most important young players as soon as the biggest European buyers appear.
The contract until 2030 is Leipzig’s strongest argument. The club does not have to negotiate under the pressure of an expiring contract, nor does it have to accept a lower price in order to avoid losing the player without a fee. That is precisely why very high valuations and thresholds for a possible transfer are mentioned in reports. If Liverpool wants to turn the deal from interest into concrete negotiations, it will have to show that it is ready to pay not only Diomande’s current value, but also his future potential.
On the other hand, every player has his own career and ambitions. In one year, Diomande has travelled the path from Spain’s Leganés to the status of one of the most sought-after teenagers in Europe. Such development can also change his personal plans, especially if clubs appear that offer a bigger stage, a higher salary and an important role. For now, however, there is no official confirmation that the player has requested a transfer or that Leipzig is actively looking for a buyer.
What the transfer would mean for the market for young wingers
If Liverpool or PSG were truly to move for a deal at the level of the amounts mentioned in European media, Diomande’s transfer would be one of the most significant deals of the summer. Such an outcome would further confirm the trend in which clubs increasingly pay a premium early for players who have a combination of youth, elite athleticism and already visible statistical production. In that sense, Diomande is not only an individual story about one talent, but also an example of the way in which the market is moving ever faster towards very high sums for players with a limited, but strong senior sample.
For Liverpool, a possible transfer would also be a symbol of generational change. After Salah’s departure, the club must deal with supporters’ expectations, the need for results and the reality that one of the best players in Premier League history cannot simply be replaced. Diomande would bring excitement and potential, but at the same time would require patience. His first season in the Bundesliga was exceptional, but the Premier League or the pressure of Liverpool would represent a new level of demands.
For now, the most precise description of the situation is that Liverpool is seriously interested, that contact with Leipzig has been reported in several reports, that a concrete offer has not been officially confirmed and that PSG remains an important rival in the race. Leipzig has the contract, the sporting benefit of the player staying and the possibility of waiting. Liverpool has a need, space in attack and a reason to act before the price changes further. It is precisely that combination that makes Diomande one of the names that will be most closely followed in the remainder of the summer transfer window.
