Liverpool steps up the search for Salah's successor: Yan Diomandé is an increasingly expensive target from Anfield

Liverpool has, according to available media information, further intensified its interest in Yan Diomandé, the 19-year-old winger of RB Leipzig and Ivory Coast international. The young forward has developed into one of the most notable stories of the Bundesliga season, and the club from Anfield sees him as a possible long-term answer to a question that is becoming increasingly important after the confirmed departure of Mohamed Salah. Although the English club's interest is described as serious, there is currently no official confirmation that Liverpool has submitted a formal offer, nor has any agreement between the clubs been announced. Precisely for that reason, the whole case remains for now in the realm of transfer talks, assessments and preparations for the summer transfer window.

According to reports from British and French media, Leipzig does not intend to easily open the door to negotiations for Diomandé. The German club has a strong negotiating position because the player is under contract until 30 June 2030, which RB Leipzig announced upon his arrival from CD Leganés in July 2025. Media claims about the price are around 100 million euros, and in some assessments significantly above that amount. Such a value does not stem only from his age and potential, but also from the fact that in his first season in Germany he immediately became one of Leipzig's key players.

Why Diomandé has become one of the main topics of the transfer window

Diomandé arrived in Leipzig as an exceptionally talented player, but one still insufficiently known to the wider European football market. In the official transfer announcement, RB Leipzig stated that they had brought him in from Spanish side CD Leganés and that they had signed a contract with him until the summer of 2030. Even then, the German club emphasized that this was a profile that fit into Leipzig's strategy of developing young players with high potential. In practice, his rise was faster than usual, because from a player for the future he became a player who directly influences the results of the first team.

Official Bundesliga statistics show that Diomandé recorded 33 appearances, 12 goals and eight assists in the league in the 2025/2026 season. The Bundesliga also published the information that, in addition to his attacking output, he was extremely active in duels and dribbles, which explains why he is not viewed only through the number of goals. His speed, directness and ability to attack space make him a player who can change the rhythm of a match, and these are characteristics that the biggest European clubs particularly seek in modern wingers. In Leipzig's system, he also showed work discipline without the ball, which is an additional reason why he is interesting to clubs looking for a player for demanding pressing and transition.

His status was further confirmed when the Bundesliga named him the best rookie of the season on 18 May 2026. The explanation of the award stated that he had outperformed Luka Vušković from Hamburg and Ibrahim Maza from Bayer Leverkusen in the competition. Such recognition carries weight because it is awarded after a combination of votes from fans, clubs and selected Bundesliga experts. For Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and other interested clubs, this is an important signal that it is no longer only about a projection of potential, but about a player who has already proven that he can carry a heavy competitive burden in one of Europe's strongest leagues.

Liverpool must solve a major question on the right side of the attack

Liverpool's search for a new wing solution gained clearer context after the club officially announced on 24 March 2026 that Mohamed Salah would leave Anfield at the end of the 2025/2026 season. In that announcement, Liverpool stated that the Egyptian had agreed to conclude a nine-year period at the club, during which he established himself as one of the greatest players in its history. The club also highlighted his trophies, output and place among Liverpool's all-time top scorers. Such a departure cannot be replaced with one simple transfer, but it explains why players with long-term development potential are being mentioned more and more in squad planning.

Diomandé is not a copy of Salah, and such comparisons should be treated with caution, especially because they are players at completely different stages of their careers. Salah has already built the status of a club legend at Liverpool, while Diomandé is only at the beginning of his senior career at the highest level. Still, there is a connection in the broader player profile: both are wingers who can play aggressively toward goal, look for space behind the defense and create overloads in the final third of the pitch. For Liverpool, Diomandé would be an investment in the next cycle, not a ready-made replacement for one of the most productive forwards in Premier League history.

According to The Times, Liverpool have placed the wing positions high on their list of priorities this summer, and Diomandé is named among the most important names in that plan. Such claims fit into the wider picture: after the departure of a player who for years delivered a large number of goals and assists, the club must rebuild its attacking structure without losing dynamism. At the same time, financial risk must also be taken into account, because a transfer of around 100 million euros for a 19-year-old carries high expectations from day one. The success of such a deal would depend as much on the player's talent, adaptation to the Premier League and the role the coach would assign him as on the transfer fee itself.

Leipzig are under no pressure to sell, but the market is testing the limits

RB Leipzig are currently not in a situation in which they have to rush into a sale. The long contract until 2030 gives the German club control over the negotiations, and Diomandé's output in his first season allows Leipzig to set the price very high. The club has previously been known for developing young players and selling them at the moment when it assesses that the financial package is sufficiently strong. But the difference is that Diomandé's case comes after a season in which the player has already become an important part of the team's sporting identity, and not just a talent waiting for an opportunity.

According to France's Foot Mercato, there is also interest in Diomandé from Paris Saint-Germain, which further complicates Liverpool's plans. The same source states that the Parisian club is monitoring the situation and that he is a player who fits their strategy of bringing in young, technically strong and market-valuable profiles. If several clubs with major financial power join the race, Leipzig will have an additional reason to maintain a high starting price. At the same time, serious interest from several buyers does not automatically mean a quick transfer, because such deals often depend on the payment structure, bonuses, agents, the player's priorities and the sporting guarantees offered to him by potential employers.

For Leipzig, the sporting aspect is also important. In its report on Diomandé's award, the Bundesliga highlighted his role in the club's return to the Champions League, and official club materials describe him as one of the players entering an important international year. Selling such a player immediately after a breakout season would bring exceptional income, but it would also raise the sporting question of replacing his speed, directness and output in the final phase. That is why it is not surprising that media reports portray Leipzig as a club approaching negotiations firmly and with no need to offer a discount.

The player's stance remains important, but not decisive

Initial claims that Diomandé is open to a major transfer fit into the usual logic of the market: a player who has made such a strong step forward in one year naturally attracts the biggest clubs. However, according to the available information, there is no official confirmation that Diomandé has requested a departure or that he has reached a final agreement with any club. In such cases, the difference between openness to a transfer and actively insisting on leaving can be decisive. Leipzig can keep the player if they do not receive an offer they consider acceptable, especially given the length of the contract.

In recent days, Foot Mercato has also written about PSG's interest and about the French champions having seriously entered into consideration of the deal, while British media portray Liverpool as a club that sees Diomandé as one of the most attractive wing solutions. Such reports show that a market race is forming around the player, but they do not change the basic fact: without an agreement with Leipzig, there is no transfer. For Diomandé himself, the choice would involve more than financial terms. He would have to assess where he would have a clear sporting role, how much space he would get immediately and which project would allow him to continue developing without excessive pressure.

His age is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, 19 years of age mean that the club bringing him in is buying long-term potential and the possibility that the player's peak is yet to come. On the other hand, a price of around 100 million euros or more creates expectations that are often not appropriate for a player with one full season in a top league. That is precisely why every interested club would have to weigh the need for a quick solution against the patience required for the development of a young forward. Liverpool, if they decide to move toward an official offer, would have to assess whether Diomandé can simultaneously be a player for the present and a project for the future.

The World Cup could further influence the price and the dynamics of negotiations

An additional element in the whole story is the 2026 World Cup, because RB Leipzig announced that Diomandé had been included in the Ivory Coast squad for the tournament. In that announcement, the club stated that he had had an exceptional year behind him and highlighted his output in all competitions. A major international tournament can change the dynamics of negotiations in both directions. If the player continues with good performances, Leipzig could further strengthen their high price; if negotiations drag on, clubs could try to resolve the deal before the market value increases further.

For Liverpool, the timing could also be important because of planning preparations for the new season. Clubs changing important attacking roles usually want to resolve key arrivals as soon as possible so that the player can join preparations, become familiar with tactical requirements and adapt to the new environment. But deals of this size are rarely concluded quickly if the seller has no need to rush. Leipzig can wait, Diomandé can perform on the world stage, and interested clubs must decide how much they are willing to risk by waiting.

A transfer that would show the direction of Liverpool's rebuild

Diomandé's possible arrival at Anfield would be more than an individual reinforcement. Such a transfer would show that Liverpool want to rebuild the attack through players who have not yet reached their peak, but already have experience in a serious European league and proven production in goals and assists. It is a model that can bring great sporting and financial value, but it requires precise assessment. A player from the Bundesliga, however talented he may be, must adapt to the intensity of the Premier League, a different rhythm of matches, greater media pressure and the expectations of a club used to fighting for the biggest trophies.

For Leipzig, a potential sale would be another confirmation of a model in which young players are developed to the level at which they are taken over by the richest clubs in Europe. Still, given his contract and importance to the team, the German club has no reason to lower the price before receiving an offer that satisfies both sporting and financial conditions. For Diomandé, staying in Leipzig would also make sense, because it would allow him another season of stable development, the Champions League and continuity in an environment in which he has already shown the best football of his career.

As of 04 June 2026, the most precise thing to say is that Liverpool's interest exists and has intensified, but that the deal has not been completed. Because of his performances in the Bundesliga, his long contract and the interest of several major clubs, Diomandé has become one of the most expensive young players available on the market only if Leipzig decide that the offer is high enough. Until an official club announcement or confirmation of an agreement arrives, the story remains open: Liverpool are looking for a new face for their attacking future, Leipzig are protecting one of their most valuable players, and Yan Diomandé is entering a summer that could determine the next stage of his career.
