Liverpool and PSG enter the race for Yan Diomande, Leipzig's winger who marked the Bundesliga season

Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain have opened talks over the possible signing of Yan Diomande, the 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger, Fabrizio Romano reported, and the information was also carried on 26 May 2026 by specialized football media. According to available information, the talks at this stage are focused on the player's side and the terms of a possible summer transfer, while there is currently no official confirmation of an agreement between the clubs. Diomande has in a short time become one of the most closely followed names on the European market for young forwards, primarily because of a highly notable first season in the Bundesliga. His status was further strengthened after the Bundesliga named him the best rookie of the 2025/26 season, confirming that the interest of Europe's biggest clubs is not merely the result of transfer publicity. In such a context, the interest of Liverpool and PSG is not surprising, but it raises the question of how willing RB Leipzig will be to negotiate if it turns out that the offers are financially close to the value the German club attaches to the young Ivory Coast international.

Romano reports talks, but the transfer has not yet been agreed

According to Fabrizio Romano's report, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain have already established contacts with Diomande's entourage ahead of the summer transfer window. Such wording is important because it does not mean that the transfer has been completed, but that the clubs are examining the conditions under which the player would be ready to leave Leipzig. In practice, talks with a player's representatives most often precede formal negotiations between clubs, especially when it concerns a young footballer with high market value and a long-term contract. Romano describes Diomande as one of the most sought-after wingers on the market, while several English and French sources state that he is a profile that fits into the plans of both clubs. However, neither Liverpool, nor PSG, nor RB Leipzig had officially confirmed an agreement by 26 May 2026, so the current situation should be viewed as an open transfer race, not as a completed operation.

The interest of the two clubs has different background. Liverpool are entering a summer in which they must reshape their attacking line after the club officially announced that Mohamed Salah will leave at the end of the 2025/26 season. That departure changes the balance within the team because Salah had for years been the main source of goals, width and individual threat from the right side of the attack. PSG, on the other hand, already have a deep and expensive attacking squad, but under Luis Enrique they continue to rely on fast, technically strong and flexible players who can play in several attacking zones. For that reason, Diomande is not only a potential replacement for one player, but an investment in a profile that is increasingly valued in top-level football: a winger who can attack space, play toward the middle and provide output without the need for the whole team to be subordinated to him.

Diomande has had a season that changed his status

Bundesliga data show that in the 2025/26 season Diomande made 33 league appearances for RB Leipzig, scored 12 goals and recorded 8 assists. The official statistics of the German championship also list 51 shots on target, 716 sprints and a highest recorded speed of 36.3 kilometres per hour, which explains why scouts view him as an extremely dynamic attacker. Those numbers are especially important because they came in the first season in which the young player had a serious role at the highest level of German football. After such performances, the Bundesliga named him rookie of the season, and the explanations highlighted his ability to consistently influence matches, not only with goals but also by putting pressure on opponents' back line. According to Transfermarkt's profile, Diomande was born in Abidjan, is 19 years old, is an Ivory Coast international and has a contract with RB Leipzig until 30 June 2030.

His development in Leipzig fits the model by which the German club has in recent years built a reputation as one of Europe's most important environments for the development of young players. Leipzig regularly bring in footballers before they reach their full market price, give them competitive space in the Bundesliga and European matches, and then sell them for a significant profit. Within that logic, Diomande has become a very valuable example because he has combined age, output and an attractive style of play. For clubs such as Liverpool and PSG, such a profile carries sporting and market value: the player is not yet at his peak, but he already shows that he can decide matches in one of Europe's strongest leagues. That is precisely why Leipzig have no reason to rush into a sale, unless the offer is high enough to fit the club's sporting strategy and financial assessment.

Liverpool seek new energy after a season away from the top of the table

Liverpool finished the 2025/26 Premier League season in fifth place with 60 points, according to official Premier League data. Such an outcome does not mean complete failure, but for a club that in recent years has been used to fighting for the highest positions, it represents a clear signal that the squad needs refreshing. The team scored 63 goals, which was enough for the upper part of the table, but not for an equal pace with Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United. In that environment, the search for a new winger carries both tactical and symbolic weight, especially after Salah's departure was confirmed. In Liverpool's system, Diomande could represent a long-term investment, not merely a short-term attempt to replace one of the most important players in the club's modern history.

Liverpool's advantage in such a race could be a clearer pathway toward an important role in the team. If the club is indeed looking for a player who will take over part of the attacking responsibility, Diomande could get more room at Anfield than at PSG, where competition in the offensive line is already extremely strong. On the other hand, the Premier League brings a different level of physical and media pressure, and the move from the Bundesliga to England often requires a period of adaptation. Liverpool will therefore, if they continue negotiations, have to assess not only the transfer fee but also the rhythm of introducing the young player into the team. Excessive expectations after Salah's departure could be a risk, but at the same time the arrival of one of the Bundesliga's most talented wingers would send a message that the club wants to rebuild its attack around speed, intensity and individual quality.

PSG can offer a trophy-winning framework and strong competition

Paris Saint-Germain enter this transfer story from the position of a club that in the 2025/26 season once again won the French championship. PSG announced that the men's team had become champions of France for the fifth time in a row and had thereby reached 14 titles in the top tier of French football. At the same time, the club remained deeply involved in the European context, and UEFA's squad list for the 2025/26 Champions League shows an attacking line that includes Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Gonçalo Ramos, Bradley Barcola and Désiré Doué. In such competition, Diomande would not automatically have a guaranteed place in the starting eleven, but he would get an environment with high standards, many matches and a clear ambition to win European trophies. For a 19-year-old player, that can be attractive, but also demanding because minutes would have to be earned in a squad where almost every offensive position is covered by top names.

PSG's interest can also be viewed through the club's long-term strategy after the change in model from the period in which the attack was built around several global stars. The Parisian club is increasingly combining already established players with younger talents who can grow within Luis Enrique's system. In that sense, Diomande fits the profile of a modern winger: he is fast, direct, capable of entering finishing positions and young enough for technical and tactical details still to be shaped. If PSG seriously push for the transfer, Liverpool could be forced to accelerate their own negotiations or decide earlier how far they want to go in financial terms. For Leipzig, such competition would be ideal because rivalry between clubs usually increases a player's negotiating value.

Leipzig have a strong negotiating position

RB Leipzig are not in a weak contractual position at this moment. Transfermarkt states that Diomande's contract runs until the summer of 2030, while his market value is estimated at 75 million euros. Such an estimate does not mean that the transfer will necessarily happen for that amount, but it shows the level at which the perception of the player's value is moving. Taking into account his age, international status, Bundesliga output and rookie of the season award, Leipzig can insist on a very high fee. Reports in English media also mention a framework of approximately 86 million pounds, or around 100 million euros, but for now that amount should be viewed as a media estimate and a possible negotiating reference, not as an officially confirmed price.

For Leipzig, the key question is whether keeping Diomande for another season can bring greater sporting benefit than selling him now. If the player continues to progress, his value could remain very high or rise further, especially if he also confirms himself on the international stage. On the other hand, the market for young attackers is often most active precisely at the moment when the impression is created that a player is on the verge of a major step forward. Clubs that wait may later pay more, but a club that buys too early takes on the risk that development will not be linear. Leipzig can therefore negotiate patiently, knowing that a contract until 2030 reduces the pressure to sell and that interest from several clubs strengthens their position.

Why Diomande is so sought after

Diomande's profile is particularly interesting because it combines speed, output and tactical flexibility. Official Bundesliga statistics on sprints and maximum speed confirm that he is a player who can attack depth and stretch opposing defences, which is crucial for teams that often face a low block. His number of goals and assists shows that he is not just an athletic winger, but a player who is already involved in the final phase of attacks. Such players are rare on the market because the biggest clubs increasingly seek forwards who can cover several zones, switch sides and create overloads in one-on-one isolations. Success in the Bundesliga does not automatically guarantee the same impact in the Premier League or Ligue 1, but it provides a sufficiently firm foundation for the interest of big clubs to be considered sporting logic, not merely a transfer fashion.

For Liverpool, the key value would be the possibility for Diomande gradually to take over part of the attacking responsibility in a new cycle. For PSG, the value would lie in further deepening the rotation and bringing in a player who can in the long term succeed or complement existing solutions in the wide positions. For the player himself, the decision will probably depend on role, development plan, contract length, sporting ambitions and financial terms. At this moment, the most important thing is that there is no official agreement, and that the talks are only the beginning of a process that may accelerate when the transfer window enters a more concrete phase. Until then, Diomande will remain one of the names most frequently mentioned in European transfer previews.

What follows in the summer transfer window

The next step in this story will be to see whether talks with the player's representatives turn into official offers to RB Leipzig. If Liverpool or PSG decide to formalize their interest, negotiations will probably revolve around a high fee, payment structure, possible bonuses and the role Diomande would have at his new club. Leipzig will try to keep control of the process, especially because selling the best young players usually also requires a replacement plan. Transfers of this profile are rarely concluded quickly, unless there is a pre-defined clause or a clear willingness from the buyer to meet the seller's conditions. According to available information, such an outcome has not yet been confirmed.

Until negotiations are completed, the most accurate description of the situation is that Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are seriously enquiring about Yan Diomande, but that no decision has been made. The player has a long contract, Leipzig have a good negotiating position, and competition between two major clubs could open a financially demanding transfer race. Diomande has left behind a season that statistically and reputationally justified major interest, but the next move will depend on who can offer him the best combination of minutes, development and the fight for trophies. For that reason, his future will probably remain one of the more important topics of the transfer window, especially if the initial contacts turn into official negotiations between the clubs.
