Real Madrid open talks for Yan Diomande, Leipzig reject offer of around €100 million
Real Madrid have entered the race for Yan Diomande and opened talks with RB Leipzig over the transfer of the 19-year-old Ivory Coast international. According to a Sky Sports report citing Sky Germany, the German club rejected the Madrid giants' initial offer, estimated at approximately €100 million. Several media outlets state that the proposal was structured as around €90 million guaranteed plus an additional €10 million in bonuses. Leipzig are currently unwilling to accept such a package, while according to ESPN and the Spanish daily AS, the German club's initial valuation is around €130 million. Negotiations are continuing, but as of July 25, 2026, neither Real Madrid nor RB Leipzig have officially announced that an agreement has been reached.
In only one season in German football, Diomande has become one of the most sought-after young forwards in Europe. Official Bundesliga data show that he scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in 33 league appearances for Leipzig, meaning he was directly involved in 20 of his team's goals. That performance earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award for the 2025/2026 campaign, as well as a place among the competition's best young players. His combination of pace, one-on-one ability, physical strength and finishing has attracted the attention of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool. Interest from several financially powerful clubs is precisely what allows Leipzig to maintain high demands in negotiations and avoid agreeing to a quick sale.
First offer rejected, Leipzig retain control of negotiations
Real's entry into negotiations changes the dynamics of a transfer race that in previous weeks had primarily been associated with Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool. Sky Sports reported on July 25 that Leipzig had rejected Madrid's offer worth around £85.4 million, which roughly corresponds to a €100 million package. According to the same report, most of the amount would have been paid as a fixed fee, while the remainder would have depended on bonuses. AS also states that Leipzig have set a valuation of approximately €130 million, although media reports mention the possibility that serious negotiations could progress with a package closer to €120 million. These are, however, unofficial figures, so the final price and structure of any potential deal have not yet been confirmed.
RB Leipzig's position is strong because of Diomande's long-term contract. When he arrived in July 2025, the German club officially announced that he had signed a contract until June 30, 2030, leaving them under no immediate pressure to sell him. At the end of June, sporting director Marcel Schäfer publicly stated that the club's clear intention was to retain the player for the 2026/2027 season as well. Such a stance shows that the requested fee is not merely an opening negotiating position, but also reflects a sporting plan in which Diomande has an important role. Leipzig secured a return to the Champions League, and participation in Europe's strongest club competition provides another argument for the young winger to remain for at least one more season.
The high price is also linked to the speed at which his market value has risen. ESPN previously reported that Leipzig paid approximately €20 million to sign him from Leganés in the summer of 2025. If a transfer were completed for a fee of between €120 million and €130 million, the German club would make an exceptionally large return on its investment after only one season. AS also states that Leganés retained the right to ten per cent of the profit from a future transfer when selling him, which could provide the Spanish club with significant additional income. That clause has not been officially confirmed in club announcements, but it represents another financial element that could affect how the deal is structured.
From professional debut at the Bernabéu to a Real Madrid target
Diomande's career has developed unusually quickly. He was born on November 14, 2006, in Abidjan, and according to a biography published by RB Leipzig, he moved to the United States as a teenager, where he developed as a footballer in Florida. After a period in the American development system, he joined Leganés, initially playing for the reserve team and later for the side competing in Spain's La Liga. He made his professional debut in March 2025 at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, in an away match against Real Madrid. Just over a year later, the club against whom he took his first senior step is attempting to sign him as one of the most expensive additions of the summer transfer window.
RB Leipzig recognised his potential after a relatively short period in Spanish senior football. In the official announcement from July 2025, Schäfer described him as an exceptionally talented winger with pace, dribbling ability, athleticism and an eye for goal. Diomande quickly justified that assessment. The Bundesliga states that, in addition to 12 goals and eight assists, he won 437 duels during the season, the highest total among league players according to the data used in selecting the Young Players Team of the Season. That figure shows that his contribution is not limited to finishing attacks, but also includes aggression, pressure on opponents and a willingness to engage in physically demanding play.
One of the key moments of his first German season was a hat-trick against Eintracht Frankfurt in December 2025. Following that performance, the Bundesliga highlighted him as the second-youngest player to score three goals in a single German league match. His ability to play on both wings increases his tactical value, although he is most commonly used as a wide forward who moves inside towards the penalty area. For clubs such as Real Madrid, that profile offers the opportunity to stretch play, attack the space behind the defence and create numerical advantages in one-on-one situations. At the same time, his age of 19 means that any buyer would also be paying for his expected development, not only for the performances he produced in one season.
PSG remain a major rival, Liverpool have not disappeared from the race
Paris Saint-Germain continue to be described in numerous reports as Diomande's preferred destination. In an interview reported by ESPN at the beginning of June, the player said that it would be a pleasure for him to play in France and that he had admired PSG since childhood. At the same time, he stressed that he is under contract with Leipzig and enjoys playing for the German club. At the beginning of July, ESPN reported that PSG were in the leading position and that Diomande had reportedly agreed personal terms on a five-year contract, but the clubs had not reached a final agreement on the transfer fee at that point. Real's offer can therefore be viewed as an attempt to seize the initiative before the Parisian club complete the deal.
Liverpool have also been linked with the player for a considerable period. According to ESPN and German reports, Leipzig previously rejected an offer from the English club worth approximately €100 million. Liverpool's interest confirms how highly sought after Diomande's profile is on the market: he is a young winger who already has experience in La Liga, the Bundesliga, international football and matches played under great pressure. However, a club's willingness to pay a high transfer fee is not the only condition. The player's decision, the sporting project, expected playing time and opportunities for development will all play important roles if Leipzig accept several offers of similar value.
At present, PSG have the advantage of the player's publicly expressed affection, while Real Madrid possess strong sporting and institutional arguments. Diomande is already familiar with the Spanish league, can draw on his experience of playing for Leganés and made his professional debut in Madrid. A move to the Bernabéu would represent a return to a familiar football environment, but with incomparably higher expectations. PSG, on the other hand, can offer him a project in which, according to his own words, he has wanted to play since childhood. Liverpool remain a Premier League option, but the available information suggests that the English club do not intend to increase their offer indefinitely.
Why Diomande interests Real Madrid
Real's interest can be explained by the need for additional variety in the wide positions. Diomande can attack down the outside, move inside, make runs in behind without the ball and accelerate transitions after possession is regained. In the Bundesliga, he showed that he can produce goals and assists while also participating in intense pressing. His ability to play on both the right and left sides would give the coach more combinations without requiring a change to the team's basic structure. For Real Madrid, the fact that he is a player who has not yet reached his peak but has already demonstrated his effectiveness in one of Europe's five strongest leagues is particularly attractive.
Such a transfer would also involve significant risk. Diomande has only one full Bundesliga season behind him, while a fee of €120 million or €130 million would automatically create expectations normally associated with fully established global stars. His statistics are impressive, but adapting to Real Madrid would involve a different kind of pressure, stronger competition and an obligation to decide matches consistently. That is precisely why the structure of any potential contract, the proportion of bonuses and the personal terms will be just as important as the basic transfer fee. Madrid must determine whether they are paying for his current quality or, to a large extent, for a projection of his future value.
For Leipzig, the calculation is different. The club can retain the player, use him in the Champions League and attempt to increase his value further, but in doing so they accept the risk of a loss of form, injury or a change in market conditions. A sale for more than €100 million would enable major reinvestment in the squad, but it would also weaken the attack immediately before the new season. Schäfer's public message about retaining the player therefore serves both the sporting plan and the negotiating strategy. Leipzig are making it clear to buyers that they do not need to sell and will consider only an offer that significantly exceeds the amounts already rejected.
Madrid must make the next move
Following the rejection of their initial offer, Real Madrid must decide whether to move closer to Leipzig's valuation or attempt to change the structure of the package. A possible solution could involve increasing the fixed portion, introducing more easily achievable bonuses or including other financial mechanisms, but there is currently no confirmation that a new offer has been prepared. The German club can simultaneously continue talks with PSG and listen to Liverpool, further strengthening their position. The large number of interested clubs reduces the possibility that Leipzig will accept a discount simply to conclude negotiations quickly. It will also be decisive whether Diomande clearly requests a departure and which project he chooses to prioritise.
For now, the only confirmed facts are that Madrid's initial attempt was rejected and that the difference between the offer and the asking price amounts to tens of millions of euros. Real's interest shows that Diomande is no longer merely an RB Leipzig development project, but a player for whom Europe's biggest clubs are competing. His first Bundesliga season created the sporting foundation for such status, while his long-term contract until 2030 gives Leipzig enough room to avoid making a decision under pressure. PSG remain an important factor because of their reported advantage in talks with the player, while Liverpool remain relevant because of their previously demonstrated financial interest. The continuation of negotiations will depend on whether Real Madrid turn their initial contact into an offer that Leipzig can no longer refuse.
