Diomande will not travel to RB Leipzig's training camp while negotiations with Real Madrid continue
Yan Diomande will not be part of the RB Leipzig squad at the training camp in Saalfelden, Austria, after the German club linked his absence to an infection. At the same time, negotiations are continuing over a possible transfer of the 19-year-old Ivory Coast international to Real Madrid, but no agreement between the clubs had been reached by August 1, 2026.
Leipzig travelled without one of their most valuable players
RB Leipzig travelled to Austria on August 1 without Yan Diomande, one of the most outstanding young forwards of the previous Bundesliga season. According to information from Sky Sport Germany, the internal decision regarding his absence was made after the player contacted the club that same morning because of health problems. Leipzig cited an infection as the reason, while coach Martín Demichelis stated after the pre-season victory over SC Verl that Diomande was indeed ill. The club did not disclose a more detailed diagnosis or provide an estimate of when the player might return to training. Consequently, his stay in Leipzig officially remains a health-related matter, although its timing coincides with intensive transfer negotiations.
Before departing, Leipzig played a pre-season match against third-tier side SC Verl and won 4-0, but Diomande was not included in the squad. Sky Sport reports that he was also not used because the clubs want to avoid a risk that could affect a possible transfer, while it was simultaneously confirmed that the player had reported himself ill during the morning. The team then headed to Saalfelden, where RB Leipzig's official schedule provides for a camp lasting until August 7, with up to two training sessions per day. For new coach Demichelis, this is an important part of the preparations for the 2026/27 season, in which Leipzig will once again compete in the Champions League. The absence of a player who was one of the main pillars of the attack during the previous season therefore also has sporting significance, regardless of the outcome of the negotiations with Madrid.
More than 24 hours without a response to the latest offer
According to Sky Sport, RB Leipzig had not responded to Real Madrid's latest offer for more than 24 hours, causing the talks to slow down temporarily. The Spanish club is reportedly surprised by the lack of feedback, but the negotiations have not been terminated and both sides are still considering the terms of a possible deal. The German source claims that Leipzig are demanding a guaranteed sum of 120 million euros, plus additional bonuses, which is a higher and more strictly structured price than Madrid's earlier proposals. According to the available reports, the key difference lies not only in the total amount but also in how much money would be paid unconditionally and how much would depend on appearances, trophies or other sporting criteria. Such a structure often determines whether an offer merely looks attractive on paper or provides the seller with sufficient guaranteed income.
The German Press Agency dpa previously reported that Leipzig had rejected Real Madrid's initial offer of 90 million euros plus another ten million euros in potential bonuses. According to the same report, the talks continued and the Madrid club subsequently prepared an improved proposal. Leipzig's position remains strong because Diomande is under contract until June 30, 2030, and, according to dpa, the agreement does not contain a release clause that would allow a buyer to unilaterally activate the transfer by paying a predetermined amount. This gives the German club considerable room for manoeuvre: they can reject the offer, demand a larger guaranteed portion or decide to keep the player for another season. On the other hand, the footballer's publicly expressed desire to leave increases the pressure to find a solution before the competitive part of the season begins.
The player wants Madrid, but the transfer has not yet been completed
Diomande wants to join Real Madrid and, according to German media reports, has already mentally distanced himself from his current club. Sky Sport reported that the player had been informed of the original plan under which he was supposed to travel to Austria, but he hoped to avoid going to the camp while negotiations were ongoing. Before the final decision regarding his absence, the possibility of him travelling but not taking part in full team training was reportedly also considered. That scenario ultimately did not materialise because he remained in Leipzig after the reported infection. His desire for a transfer, however, is not sufficient on its own: without an agreement on the fee, payment schedule and bonuses, he remains a registered RB Leipzig player.
Some sources claim that Diomande has already agreed personal terms with Real Madrid on a contract that would run until 2031, but the clubs had not officially confirmed this by August 1. This is precisely why claims that the transfer has been completed must be distinguished from the confirmed status of the negotiations. There has been no official announcement from RB Leipzig or Real Madrid regarding a completed deal, and Diomande remains part of the German club's squad. Earlier media reports that presented the deal as complete proved premature because the key dispute over the price and structure of the transfer fee had not been resolved. Until official documents and the registration of the transfer are announced, the most accurate description is that the negotiations are advanced but unfinished.
Why Leipzig are insisting on a fee of around 120 million euros
Leipzig's high valuation is based on Diomande's rapid development, his long-term contract and interest from several major European clubs. Dpa reported that the German club had previously also rejected an offer of a similar value from Liverpool, while Paris Saint-Germain had also been mentioned as a serious candidate to sign the young winger. Competition among potential buyers strengthens Leipzig's negotiating position, particularly because the club is not being forced to sell due to a contract nearing its expiration. During the summer, the management publicly maintained that Diomande could stay and play another season in Germany. At the same time, a fee of at least 120 million euros would represent an exceptionally large return on the investment after only one year.
Diomande joined Leipzig from CD Leganés in the summer of 2025, with German media reporting a transfer fee of approximately 20 million euros. Only one year later, his market position has changed many times over thanks to his performances in the Bundesliga and appearances for the Ivory Coast national team. Leipzig are therefore negotiating not only on the basis of the value of his results so far, but also the potential of a player who has not yet turned 20. The club must assess whether it makes more financial sense to accept a record offer now or retain a footballer whose value could rise further, but could also decline because of form, injury or changing market conditions. Real Madrid, by contrast, are attempting to limit the initial cost and tie part of the total value to future performance.
The season that turned Diomande into a European target
Official Bundesliga data show that Diomande scored 12 goals and recorded eight assists in 33 league appearances during the 2025/26 season. At the age of 19 years and 114 days, he became the fourth-youngest player in the league's history to reach a double-digit goal tally in a single season. His speed, one-on-one play and ability to operate on both wings made him one of the most notable young players in the German championship. The Bundesliga describes him as a naturally right-footed footballer who can attack from either side, with pronounced agility and finishing ability. Such a profile is particularly valuable to clubs seeking a forward capable of stretching the play, attacking space and independently creating an advantage.
His rise has not been limited to club football. According to official Bundesliga data updated on June 30, 2026, Diomande had by then collected 13 appearances and three goals for the senior Ivory Coast national team. At the 2026 World Cup, he was involved in important moves for his national team, including assists against Germany and Curaçao in the group stage. Such performances further increased his international visibility immediately before the summer transfer window. For clubs such as Real Madrid, the fact that he has already experienced Spanish football is also important, as he played for Leganés before Leipzig and made his senior La Liga debut against Real Madrid.
Diomande's path to the top of the European market was unusually rapid. He was born on November 14, 2006, in Abidjan and spent part of his football development in the United States before moving to Spain. He played ten league matches and scored two goals for Leganés, after which Leipzig signed him as a project for the future. In his first Bundesliga season, he had already outgrown the status of a development player and become one of the team's most productive members. It is precisely this combination of youth, output and a long-term contract that explains why the difference between the amount Leipzig paid in 2025 and the fee they are now demanding is so substantial.
Sporting uncertainty for Demichelis and Leipzig
For coach Martín Demichelis, the situation comes at a sensitive stage of the preparations. Leipzig must simultaneously develop their playing model for the new season and prepare for the possibility that one of their most dangerous forwards could leave before the first official match. If Diomande stays, the coaching staff will have to gradually reintegrate him into the team's rhythm after his illness and a period marked by negotiations. If he is sold, the club will have to decide whether his role can be distributed among the existing players or whether part of the substantial transfer fee should be directed towards a new attacking option. The training camp in Saalfelden therefore has a dual purpose: to prepare the team physically and to test solutions that do not depend on the conclusion of the transfer saga.
Leipzig are entering the 2026/27 season with ambitions at both domestic and European level, so losing a player who directly contributed to 20 goals in the previous Bundesliga season would be significant. At the same time, income of approximately 120 million euros could give the club room for several reinforcements and a long-term renewal of the squad. This is a typical dilemma for a club that develops young players: the sporting value of its best individual must be compared with the financial effect of selling at the moment of greatest interest. In recent years, Leipzig have built a reputation as a club that recruits talents relatively early, develops them in the Bundesliga and sells them for considerably higher prices. If the deal is completed, Diomande would become one of the most striking examples of that model.
The next move depends on Leipzig's response
At this moment, Real Madrid are awaiting a response to their latest offer, while Leipzig retain control thanks to a contract that still has four years to run. Sky Sport states that the deal remains possible and that the negotiations have not collapsed, but the gap between the desired structure of the transfer fee and the offered terms remains the main obstacle. The player's absence from Austria removes the immediate possibility of him training with the team during the most intensive part of the preparations, but it does not alter his legal status. The club have not sold him, Real Madrid have not presented him, and neither a medical examination nor the formal signing has been officially confirmed. Therefore, any new claim that the deal has been completed will require confirmation from at least one of the clubs involved.
For Diomande, the outcome is also important because of the timing. The longer the negotiations continue, the harder it will be for him to become fully involved in the preparations, whether in Leipzig or Madrid. For the German club, delaying may help achieve the desired price, but it simultaneously prolongs the uncertainty in the dressing room and among the coaching staff. Real Madrid, on the other hand, want sufficient time to register, present and integrate the new player into tactical preparations before the official matches begin. Until Leipzig provide a formal response and the complete financial structure is agreed, Diomande remains caught between his desired departure and his contractual obligation to his current club.
