Alonso convinced Rogers and Palmer can lead Chelsea together: "I have a plan"
Xabi Alonso has dismissed suggestions that Morgan Rogers' arrival will create a tactical problem because of an overlap with Cole Palmer's role. Chelsea's new head coach said in Sydney that he does not see the two England internationals as rivals for one position, but as players whose different qualities can be combined in the same attacking system. According to the London club's announcement of 27 July 2026, Alonso already has a developed idea of how they will work together, with the key being a balance between creativity on the ball, play between the lines and work out of possession. His message comes only a few days after Chelsea confirmed Rogers' arrival from Aston Villa and tied him to a contract until the summer of 2033. The transfer has therefore become one of the central issues at the beginning of Alonso's tenure at Stamford Bridge, because the relationship between Rogers and Palmer could determine precisely how Chelsea build attacks in the 2026/27 season.
Alonso does not see a positional conflict
Doubts about fitting the two players together stem from the fact that both Rogers and Palmer feel most comfortable in the spaces behind the central striker. Both look for the ball between the opposition's midfield and defensive lines, like to move inside and create chances or finish moves from those areas. Alonso, however, believes that such similarity does not have to lead to congestion, provided that their starting positions, movements and responsibilities are allocated precisely. Ahead of the first pre-season match against Western Sydney Wanderers, he said that he had a "plan and an idea" and that he could imagine a very good connection between the new teammates. He also stressed that Chelsea must find the right blend of special individuals, control of the match and defensive stability, because possession without balance will not be enough for a team that wants to compete regularly at the top again.
The Spanish coach particularly highlighted Rogers' adaptability. In his words, the new signing can operate in the so-called pocket behind the striker, alongside a classic "number ten", on the right side, but also from the left wing, from where he has often moved inside during his career so far. Such a profile allows Alonso to change the shape during a match without necessarily substituting a player. Rogers can start wide and then attack the central space, he can be one of two attacking midfielders behind the striker or temporarily drop deeper to connect midfield with attack. Palmer would not have to permanently leave the zones in which he is most dangerous, as the two of them could alternate between the right and left half-spaces, depending on the opponent and the phase of the attack.
Different qualities for two creative roles
A tactical analysis published on the Premier League's official website describes Rogers as an exceptionally powerful ball carrier who progresses through opposition lines by dribbling, while Palmer is more recognisable as an organiser of the final phase, a player of the final pass and an accurate shot. Premier League data for the previous two seasons show that Rogers was among the competition's leading attackers for dribble attempts and success rate, progressive carries and line-breaking passes. In the same period, he recorded 18 league goals and 16 assists from open play, while also creating 28 big chances without set pieces. Palmer scored 25 league goals in that comparison, with eight assists from open play and 20 big chances created. The numbers do not mean that their partnership will develop automatically, but they clearly show why Alonso believes their skills complement each other more than they cancel each other out.
Rogers' directness could offer Chelsea a solution against defences that close down the space available to Palmer. When opponents double-mark Chelsea's "number ten" and restrict his ability to turn towards goal, Rogers can attack the vacated corridor with power and ball carrying. Conversely, Palmer's ability to attract attention and play a well-timed pass can open up one-on-one situations for Rogers, in which he is particularly dangerous. In Alonso's preferred system with three defenders and two players behind the striker, the width is generally provided by the wing-backs, while the creative players operate closer to the centre. In its analysis, the Premier League states that Rogers used similar zones at Aston Villa under Unai Emery, which is why the transition to the new structure should not require a complete redefinition of his game.
An important part of the plan will be their behaviour without the ball. In his first public appearances as Chelsea coach, Alonso insisted on collective work, a high level of responsibility and creating a culture in which individual quality must fit the needs of the team. If Palmer and Rogers play together behind one striker, they will have to coordinate their pressing of the opposition's build-up and their blocking of passes into central areas. One will often step out towards a centre-back or full-back, while the other will secure the space alongside the midfielders. That is precisely why Alonso, when discussing their potential, placed equal emphasis on competitiveness "with the ball and against the ball". The message is clear: the two creators can have freedom in attack, but only if they simultaneously maintain a structure that prevents Chelsea from being exposed after losing possession.
Rogers arrives after the most successful period of his career
Chelsea officially confirmed the transfer on 21 July 2026, and Rogers was presented five days before his 24th birthday as a long-term reinforcement for Alonso's team. The club announced that during two and a half seasons at Aston Villa he contributed to 40 goals in 85 Premier League appearances, counting goals and assists. In the most recent season across all competitions, he scored 14 goals and added 11 assists in 55 appearances, according to data published by Sky Sports. He helped Aston Villa win the Europa League and secure a place among the top four teams in the English championship, while his performances also earned him an increasingly important role with the England national team. The official profile of the English Football Association states that by the end of July 2026 he had collected 22 senior appearances, after making his debut in November 2024.
The financial dimension of the transfer further increases expectations. Chelsea did not disclose the transfer fee, but Sky Sports reported that the deal was worth 117 million British pounds, which would make Rogers the most expensive British footballer and the London club's record incoming transfer. The same source stated that Arsenal had also shown strong interest, but were not prepared to match the asking price. Such an investment means that Rogers was not signed as a rotation player or as a project who would wait years for an opportunity. Alonso openly said that Chelsea were looking for a footballer capable of making an almost immediate impact and that there were not many better solutions on the market for the position they needed. The speed of his adaptation will therefore be one of the first indicators of whether the high fee can be justified by his sporting contribution.
Palmer remains the focal point, but receives a new kind of support
Rogers' arrival does not change the fact that Palmer has been Chelsea's most recognisable creative player in recent seasons. The club tied him to a contract until 2033 in 2024, and in his debut season at Stamford Bridge he was involved in 33 league goals. In the 2025/26 season, he scored 11 goals in all competitions, ten of them in the Premier League, while Chelsea highlighted in the club's statistical review that he had become their first player to record four league hat-tricks. His influence, however, cannot be measured solely by goals and assists. Palmer often dictates the rhythm in the final third, slowing down an attack to draw defenders towards him before accelerating the final phase with a pass or a move onto his left foot.
Rogers' presence could reduce Chelsea's dependence on a single source of creativity. In parts of previous seasons, Chelsea had difficulties when opponents shut down Palmer and forced other players to take the initiative in central areas. Rogers brings the ability to carry the ball independently through several lines, withstand contact and continue the move under pressure. It is a different route towards the same objective: Palmer more often resolves situations through vision and technical precision, while Rogers does so through dynamism, strength and attacks into space. Alonso will have to decide when to place them on opposite sides, when to bring them closer together and how to arrange the striker and wing-backs around them, but the fundamental idea is not to replace Palmer's role, but to increase the number of ways in which Chelsea can create a chance.
A friendship from their youth days could speed up their connection
Rogers and Palmer have known each other since they were approximately 14 years old, first from England's youth national teams and later from Manchester City's academy. In his first interview after joining Chelsea, Rogers said that they had spoken for a long time about the possibility of playing together again and that Palmer had contacted him frequently before the transfer. Their closeness does not in itself guarantee success on the pitch, but it may shorten the period needed to understand habits, preferred movements and the moments in which each of them expects a pass. The Premier League analysis states that at senior level they have so far spent only parts of two England matches on the pitch together, against Andorra in June 2025 and Japan in March 2026. Chelsea will therefore offer them daily work in the same club system for the first time.
There is also a symbolic link that is already well known to supporters. Palmer previously admitted that he adopted his distinctive goal celebration from Rogers, which made their friendship part of football culture even before they arrived together at Stamford Bridge. Nevertheless, the coaching staff will be far more interested in their communication in tight spaces, their reaction after losing the ball and their willingness for one to drop back so that the other can have freedom. The most successful attacking partnerships are not merely the sum of individual quality, but the result of repetition, clear rules and mutual trust. Alonso sees their familiarity as an initial advantage, but he will have to turn it into automatisms through training and competitive minutes.
Rogers will not play immediately in Sydney
Although the subject of his partnership with Palmer dominated Alonso's press conference in Sydney, Rogers is not part of Chelsea's initial group on the tour of Australia and Asia. The club announced that after playing for England at the World Cup, where the national team finished third, he had been granted a holiday before joining pre-season preparations at the Cobham training centre. Palmer, on the other hand, was included among the 28 players who travelled on the tour. This means that Alonso will use the first pre-season matches to work with the existing attacking options, while specific work on the Rogers-Palmer partnership will begin later. Despite that, the coach is convinced that the new player will not need much time to adapt because he already knows the Premier League, some of his teammates and the demands of football at the highest level.
Chelsea will play their first match under Alonso on 28 July 2026 against Western Sydney Wanderers at Accor Stadium in Sydney, kicking off at 7.45 pm Australian Eastern Standard Time. They will face Tottenham at the same stadium on 1 August, followed by matches against Juventus in Hong Kong, Milan in Jakarta and Johor Darul Ta'zim in Malaysia. The club confirmed that preparations will conclude with a match against Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge. The Australian part of the tour therefore serves Alonso as the first laboratory for the basic principles of his game, although without Rogers he will not yet be able to test the most intriguing new combination. The real answers about the relationship between the two England internationals will only begin to emerge once they train together and receive minutes against opponents who will deliberately try to close off their preferred zones.
A plan that will shape the beginning of the Alonso era
For Chelsea, it is important that the discussion about Rogers and Palmer is not reduced to the question of who will wear the number ten or occupy one predetermined position. Modern attacking systems are based on rotations, creating numerical superiority and the players' ability to recognise space opened by the movement of teammates. By signing Rogers, Alonso has acquired a footballer who can change the rhythm with a forward run, play in several positions and take on part of the creative burden. At the same time, he must preserve Palmer's freedom and influence, because Chelsea have built a large part of their attacking play around him in recent years. If he succeeds in finding the balance, the club could have two different but compatible centres of attacking play.
Alonso's confidence currently rests on the players' profiles, their long-standing connection and a tactical concept that has not yet been tested in a Chelsea shirt. Rogers still has to join the team, and the size of the transfer fee will ensure that every role and performance of his is analysed closely. Palmer, meanwhile, will have to accept that attacks will no longer necessarily be built exclusively through him, while Rogers will have to show that he can make decisions as quickly as he gains ground. The coach publicly accepted responsibility with the message that he has a plan. The next step will be to turn that idea into a partnership that gives Chelsea more creativity, directness and control, without disrupting the balance that Alonso considers the foundation of a competitive team.
