Aston Villa have accepted Chelsea's £117 million offer for England international Morgan Rogers, Sky Sports reported on 18 July. The 23-year-old attacker is expected to undergo a medical in London on Monday, 20 July, after returning from the United States, before signing a long-term contract. The deal has not yet been officially confirmed as completed on either Chelsea's or Aston Villa's websites, so its completion remains subject to medical examinations and the formalisation of documentation.
The agreed transfer value makes this deal one of the biggest in the history of English football. According to information from Sky Sports, Rogers is expected to sign a six-year contract, with an option to extend it for an additional season. Chelsea have thereby taken the initiative in a race in which Arsenal had identified the England international as one of their main attacking targets of the summer transfer window. Their London rivals, however, were not prepared to match the amount accepted by Aston Villa, allowing the Stamford Bridge club to clear the path towards completing the transfer.
For Chelsea, Rogers' arrival would represent a powerful statement of ambition at the beginning of new head coach Xabi Alonso's tenure. Chelsea officially announced in May that the Spanish specialist had signed a four-year contract and would take charge on 1 July 2026. On the club's transfer list for the summer of 2026, Marco Palestra and Geovany Quenda are currently listed as the new first-team players. Rogers' transfer can therefore be described at this stage as agreed between the clubs, but still subject to the customary final steps.
Such caution is especially important in deals of this magnitude. A medical examination, contract registration, agreement on payment details and the signing of all documents precede the official announcement. According to Sky Sports, the examination is planned for 20 July, following Rogers' return with the England national team from North America. Chelsea overtake Arsenal and offer a key role

Alonso began working with the squad at the start of July and publicly emphasised that he wants to build a culture of high standards, hard work and competitive hunger. Rogers' profile fits a team seeking players capable of operating in several attacking roles. The English footballer can play as an attacking midfielder, left winger or second striker, while his combination of strength, ball carrying and late runs provides several tactical options.
Chelsea already have a large number of young attacking players, but Rogers brings experience from the Premier League, European competitions and the England national team. His adaptation to the physical demands of the domestic league should not be as uncertain as that of players arriving in England for the first time. Rogers developed as a footballer in West Bromwich Albion's system before being recruited by Manchester City. With that triumph, Villa won their first major trophy in three decades and provided further confirmation of their progress under Emery. Huge profit for Aston Villa, but a significant share for Middlesbrough
Aston Villa will make an exceptionally large return on their investment in Rogers. Comparing the reported sale value of £117 million with the approximately £15.5 million paid to Middlesbrough, the difference exceeds £100 million before additional costs, contractual obligations and the accounting treatment of the transfer are taken into consideration. It is one of the most striking examples of growth in a player's value in recent Premier League history.
The entire amount, however, will not remain with Aston Villa. Sky Sports states that Middlesbrough are entitled to 20 per cent of the profit from a future sale. According to that calculation, the club from the north-east of England should receive an additional £20.3 million. Together with the original transfer fee, Middlesbrough would earn around £35.8 million from Rogers' transfers, having signed him from Manchester City for approximately £1.1 million.
For Villa, the financial impact remains enormous. Selling a player developed over several seasons can create room for new investment in the squad, but money alone does not solve the question of replacing a player who simultaneously provided goals, assists, ball progression and physical power. If the transfer is completed, Emery will have to redistribute creative responsibility and find a new player capable of connecting midfield and attack.
Rogers extended his contract with Aston Villa until 2031 in November 2025, meaning the club was not forced to accept a lower offer. The long-term contractual protection enabled Villa to set an exceptionally high price and negotiate from a position of strength. The accepted £117 million offer shows that Chelsea have assessed Rogers' current quality and potential for further development as sufficient to justify a historic level of investment.

Rogers made his senior England debut on 14 November 2024. According to the official profile of the Football Association, he had collected 21 appearances and scored one goal by 19 July 2026. Before joining the senior team, he regularly played for England at under-17, under-19, under-20 and under-21 level, meaning his rise did not come without prolonged development within the international system.
He made five appearances at the 2026 World Cup, according to Sky Sports. In England's semi-final defeat by Argentina, he assisted Anthony Gordon for a goal, demonstrating his ability to influence an important match even on the biggest international stage. The tournament further strengthened his status as a player capable of competing for a place in England's powerful attacking line.
His versatility is one of the main reasons for his high market value. The English association describes him as a player who is equally comfortable on either wing, with a pronounced goal threat and a creative side. In club football, he has most often been especially dangerous when receiving the ball between the opposition's midfield and defensive lines, then accelerating towards the penalty area or creating space for teammates.
For Chelsea, such a profile could make it possible to change formations without changing players. Rogers can start on the left and move inside, play behind the centre-forward or take on a midfield role with an emphasis on attacking duties. His physical build and experience in Aston Villa's transitional play could also be important for a team that will attempt to increase its intensity and control of matches under Alonso.

Until then, it is most accurate to speak of an accepted offer and an agreement between the clubs, rather than a fully completed transfer.
