Carlo Ancelotti launches major Brazil rebuild: new generation gets its first major test
The Brazil national football team has entered a new cycle with one of the most pronounced squad overhauls in recent years. On 9 September, Carlo Ancelotti announced a 26-player squad for friendlies against Australia and India, Brazil's first matches since the 2026 World Cup, and the selection clearly shows that the emphasis has shifted toward rejuvenating the team and preparing a core that should mature ahead of the 2028 Copa América and the 2030 World Cup. According to data from the Brazilian Football Confederation, ten of the called-up players play for Brazilian clubs, while eight footballers have received their first call-up to the senior national team. Ancelotti said that he wants to give priority to young players who will have enough time to develop over the next four-year cycle, while also stressing that the national team's doors are not closed to more experienced players.
The change comes after the disappointing end to Brazil's campaign at the 2026 World Cup. Brazil finished first in its group with seven points, then beat Japan 2-1 in the first knockout round, but lost 2-1 to Norway in the round of 16 on 5 July. FIFA described that defeat as Brazil's first World Cup round-of-16 elimination since 1990. Two goals from Erling Haaland ended the five-time world champions' attempt to move closer to a sixth title, while Neymar scored Brazil's only goal deep into stoppage time. Immediately after the match, Ancelotti said that he did not see the elimination merely as the end of one tournament, but also as the beginning of a new cycle.
The average age has fallen sharply, and eight players are in the senior national team for the first time
The scale of the change is best seen in the age and structure of the new squad. According to an analysis by Folha de S.Paulo, the average age of the called-up players has fallen from 28.8 years, which was the figure in the World Cup squad, to 24.4 years. Six players on the new list are aged 20 or younger, creating room for several years of monitoring and development within the national-team system. The debutants include goalkeepers Pedro Morisco of Coritiba and Otávio of Cruzeiro, defenders Arthur Dias of Athletico Paranaense and Jair of Nottingham Forest, full-backs Matheuzinho of Corinthians and Mauro Júnior of PSV, and midfielders Breno Bidon of Corinthians and Gabriel Bontempo of Santos.
When presenting the squad, Ancelotti explained that he is looking for a balance between players who already know the demands of the senior national team and those who could become its foundation in the coming years. The CBF states that the Italian coach particularly emphasized the quality of the young players and the need to assess them in genuine international conditions, rather than only through their club performances. This approach also has a practical dimension: some of Brazil's most talented players still do not have consistent playing time at European clubs, so the coaching staff wants to monitor their development without drawing premature conclusions about their status in the national team. Ancelotti stressed that club and national-team objectives are not always the same and that a player who currently does not receive significant playing time at club level can still be important to the national team's long-term project.
A completely new goalkeeping unit symbolizes the break with the previous tournament
The most radical change has been made among the goalkeepers. Instead of Alisson, Ederson and Weverton, who were part of the squad at the 2026 World Cup, Hugo Souza of Corinthians, Pedro Morisco of Coritiba and Otávio of Cruzeiro have been called up. In doing so, Ancelotti has effectively opened a new internal competition for one of the most sensitive positions in the national team. Pedro Morisco and Otávio have received their first senior call-ups, while Hugo Souza gets another opportunity to establish himself in a position where Brazil has generally had a clear hierarchy in recent years.
The change, however, does not mean that the previous goalkeepers have been permanently discarded. According to the CBF and Brazilian media, Ancelotti explicitly left open the possibility of Alisson returning and said that his status would depend on form and the development of the competition leading up to the 2028 Copa América. He extended the same message to other experienced players: a current omission is not a final decision, but part of a phase in which the coaching staff wants to broaden the pool of candidates. Such a strategy allows Brazil to test more options in the early stage of the cycle without the pressure of an immediate qualifying result, because qualification for the 2030 World Cup, according to the CBF's plan, will begin in the second half of 2027.
The backbone has not disappeared: Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha and Marquinhos remain important
Although the squad has been significantly rejuvenated, Ancelotti has not embarked on a complete generational change. Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, Marquinhos, Gabriel Magalhães and Bruno Guimarães remain in the team, players who should provide continuity and experience in the dressing room. Alongside them are Endrick, Rayan and Danilo Santos, who were also part of the most recent World Cup cycle and belong to a group of footballers expected to take on a larger role in the years ahead. The idea is not to create a completely new national team overnight, but to gradually change the balance between experienced leaders and younger candidates.
The attacking line remains particularly important. Vinícius Júnior and Raphinha are still among Brazil's most recognizable attacking players, while Endrick, Estêvão, João Pedro and Rayan represent a generation that should be entering its prime playing years by 2030. After announcing the squad, Ancelotti spoke specifically about Endrick and his future importance to the national team, suggesting that the Real Madrid centre-forward will be given opportunities even when his club playing time is not ideal. Pedro of Flamengo and Samuel Lino, also of Flamengo, are also in contention, meaning the coaching staff has retained different types of forwards and the option to change systems depending on the opponent.
Ten players from Brazilian clubs and stronger links with youth national teams
One of the more interesting elements of the squad is the strong representation of the domestic league. The CBF announced that ten of the 26 called-up footballers play in Brazil. Corinthians has three national-team players, Hugo Souza, Matheuzinho and Breno Bidon, while Flamengo contributes Pedro and Samuel Lino. Representatives of Coritiba, Cruzeiro, Athletico Paranaense, Botafogo and Santos have also received call-ups. In doing so, Ancelotti has shown that playing in Europe is not a prerequisite for entering the national team, which is particularly important during a period in which the aim is to broaden the pool of candidates.
In recent months, the CBF has also increasingly emphasized connecting the senior national team with the under-20 and under-17 teams. Executive coordinator of the men's national teams Rodrigo Caetano explained that potential candidates for 2030 are already being monitored across several age categories, while Ancelotti has emphasized the need for constant communication with the coaching staffs of the youth teams. Under such a model, the path to the senior team should depend less on one short period of good form and more on continuous monitoring of technical, tactical and physical development. Brazil is seeking to use the four-year cycle to identify earlier the players who could reach international level by the next World Cup.
That strategy is particularly important because, over recent decades, Brazilian football has often had a large number of individually talented players but has not always managed to form a stable national-team core early enough. The last world title was won in 2002, and since then Brazil has entered several tournaments among the favorites without returning to the final. After the elimination by Norway in 2026, the pressure on the new generation will not disappear, but Ancelotti's contract through 2030 gives the coaching staff a rare degree of continuity for long-term work. In May 2026, the CBF extended the Italian coach's contract through the next World Cup, several weeks before the tournament in North America began.
Australia and India are the first laboratory of the new cycle
The first test for the new squad will not be competitive, but it will be important for determining roles. Brazil will play Australia on 25 September at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville, and four days later the same national teams will meet again at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. Brazil will then travel to India, where it will face the home national team on 3 October at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, also known as Salt Lake Stadium, in Kolkata. The CBF states that this will be the first senior international match between Brazil and India in history.
Three matches in a short period will allow Ancelotti to distribute playing time among a larger number of players and test combinations that might not receive an opportunity in a standard two-match international window. For the debutants, this will be their first direct experience of the pace and demands of the senior national team, while the more experienced players will be tasked with stabilizing the team during the transition phase. Results in friendly matches will not in themselves determine the future status of individual players, but they will give the coaching staff its first information about how the new players adapt to Ancelotti's style of play and to the international level.
The observation programme will continue in November. The CBF has already confirmed that Brazil will play Japan on 14 November and Singapore on 17 November, with both matches taking place at the National Stadium in Singapore. The federation explained that these matches are part of a plan aimed at playing against different footballing schools while simultaneously expanding opportunities for training, assessment and the development of tactical concepts. The next squad lists could therefore bring further changes, especially if some of the currently selected young players establish themselves and some experienced internationals return to peak form.
Copa América 2028 is the first major checkpoint before the 2030 World Cup
Although the 2030 World Cup is the ultimate goal of the cycle, the CBF has identified the 2028 Copa América as an important intermediate step. That tournament will be the first major opportunity to determine whether the rejuvenation process has produced a team capable of playing under competitive pressure. By then, the current debutants should have nearly two years of experience in the senior programme, while players such as Endrick, Estêvão, Rayan and Vitor Reis will be entering a more mature phase of their careers. At the same time, the coaching staff will have to decide how much room to leave for veterans who can maintain a high level through 2030.
Ancelotti's most important task, therefore, is not merely to find the 26 best players in September 2026, but to establish a clear hierarchy over the next three seasons. Brazil has a broad enough player base for competition to be strong in almost every position, but a large number of options can only be an advantage if a stable system is gradually built through friendly matches, qualifiers and the Copa América. The current squad should be viewed as a starting group rather than a final projection of the team for 2030. Ancelotti himself stressed that decisions will change depending on players' development and form.
Following the early elimination from the 2026 World Cup, the Brazil national team can no longer rely solely on reputation and individual quality. The new cycle begins with a clear signal that age, development potential and the possibility of long-term progress will carry more weight than before. Eight debut call-ups, a completely changed goalkeeping unit and a significant number of players from the Brazilian league show that the rebuilding process is already under way. Its success will not be possible to assess after a single international break, but the matches against Australia and India will provide the first answers about which of the new names can permanently move closer to the core of the team for 2028 and 2030.
