Argentina opened the World Cup with a 3:0 victory against Algeria in Kansas City
Argentina began its appearance at the 2026 World Cup in the United States by defeating Algeria 3:0 and, already in the first round of Group J, confirmed its status as one of the national teams viewed as a leading contender for the final stages of the tournament. The match was played at Arrowhead Stadium, which FIFA refers to in official tournament communication as Kansas City Stadium, and according to the official FIFA schedule the match was part of the first phase of the competition. Argentina controlled the rhythm for most of the duel, patiently built its attacks and, in the process, did not allow Algeria to seriously disrupt its defensive stability. The 3:0 result therefore does not describe only the winner's efficiency, but also the way in which the reigning world champion entered the tournament: without conceding a goal, with clear control of possession and with enough energy not to lose the structure of its play after taking the lead.
According to data from Global Sports Archive, all three goals for Argentina were scored by Lionel Messi, who found the net in the 17th, 60th and 80th minutes. In doing so, the Argentine captain marked a match that had already had a strong historical frame even before kick-off, because international media reported that the appearance against Algeria was his 200th match for the national team. The Indian Express, citing match reports, states that Messi achieved his first World Cup hat-trick in Kansas City and drew level with Miroslav Klose at the top of the list of the best scorers in the history of the tournament with 16 goals. For Argentina, it was an ideal start to the defence of the title won in Qatar in 2022, especially after it had opened the previous World Cup with a defeat against Saudi Arabia and then fought its way back through the competition to the trophy.
An early goal set the direction of the match
Argentina opened the match cautiously, but decisively enough to impose the conditions of play already in the first period. According to the Global Sports Archive record, the first goal arrived in the 17th minute after a move in which Rodrigo de Paul assisted Messi. That early goal changed the tone of the match, because Algeria had to abandon its initial reserve and look for space in transition, while Argentina could continue playing at a rhythm that suited it more. In the first half there was no collapse in the scoreline, but it was clear that the Argentine midfield had more control over the central part of the pitch and that it could stop most of Algeria's attempts before they entered a more dangerous zone.
According to available reports, Algeria had periods in which it tried to raise the pressure, especially after Argentina lost the ball in midfield, but those attacks most often ended without a final shot that would more seriously threaten Emiliano Martínez. In matches like this, the first phase after conceding a goal often determines whether the underdog will enter an open exchange or remain in the game until the closing stages. Algeria kept the deficit to a minimum long enough to remain present in the scoreline, but it did not manage to force Argentina into a longer defensive crisis. It was precisely that Argentine calmness that was one of the key differences: Lionel Scaloni's team did not rush toward a second goal at any cost, but waited for space and gradually wore down the opposing defence.
Messi finished the job in the second half
The second half brought confirmation of Argentine superiority. According to the same statistical record, Messi increased the lead to 2:0 in the 60th minute, and scored the final goal for 3:0 in the 80th minute after an assist from Nicolás González. With that, the match was practically settled before the final minutes, and Argentina could calmly bring the encounter to an end. In its report, the Indian Express pointed out that Messi was substituted after the third goal, while Global Sports Archive recorded the introduction of Nicolás Paz in place of the Argentine captain in the closing stage of the match. Such a substitution further shows that, after securing the lead, the coaching staff could also think about distributing minutes in the early phase of a long tournament.
Messi's performance carried both competitive and symbolic weight. According to an Associated Press report published during the match, the early goal meant that Messi became the second player to score at five World Cups, after Cristiano Ronaldo. The later outcome, with a total of three goals, further strengthened the historical dimension of his appearance. Although Argentina has in recent years built a team that does not rely on only one player, this match showed that Messi can still decide a match at the highest level. For the opponents in the group, that is an important message, because Argentina did not gain only points, but also additional confidence in a phase in which favourites are often only just adjusting to the rhythm of the tournament.
Scaloni's team maintained the balance between control and patience
Head coach Lionel Scaloni got in Kansas City exactly what is most important at the opening of a championship: victory, a clean sheet and the possibility of saving part of the energy for the continuation of the group. The Indian Express conveyed Scaloni's assessment that the first match is always difficult and that Algeria is an opponent that knows how to play, regardless of the final 3:0. Such a statement fits the broader impression of the match, because Argentina did not win thanks to a chaotic match, but thanks to better control of space, greater individual quality and calmer decision-making in key moments. In midfield, an important role was played by the players responsible for rhythm and security in possession, while the defence remained compact enough to avoid unnecessary risks.
It is especially important that Argentina did not allow the tournament opener to become nervous. First matches at World Cups can often be unpredictable, because national teams are only just entering the competitive rhythm, and a mistake in the group can change the entire dynamic of the tournament. Four years ago in Qatar, Argentina felt how difficult it can be to recover from a weak start, so the victory against Algeria also had psychological value. Instead of the pressure that would have followed a draw or defeat, the defending champion can now prepare for the next matches with an advantage in the standings and without the need to urgently repair the impression. That is especially significant in the expanded tournament format, in which an additional knockout round opens after the group.
Algeria remained without an answer, but not yet without prospects
For Algeria, the defeat is heavy, but it does not have to be decisive in Group J. In its group preview, FIFA stated that Argentina, Algeria, Austria and Jordan make up a group in which the defending champion begins its path toward defending the trophy, while the other national teams fight for progression to the knockout phase. According to the rules of the new 2026 World Cup format, which FIFA published in its explanation of the competition system, 48 national teams participate in the tournament, and the two best national teams from each of the 12 groups, as well as the eight best third-placed teams, advance to the knockout phase. Because of that, one defeat in the first round does not close the door to continuing the competition, but a goal difference of 0:3 considerably increases the pressure in the remaining duels.
Algeria will have to draw practical conclusions from this match, above all in the way it reaches the final phase of attacks against organised defences. According to Global Sports Archive, Riyad Mahrez entered the game in the 64th minute, together with several other changes, which shows that the coaching staff tried to change the rhythm and add creativity in the closing stages. However, at 0:2 the space for a comeback had already narrowed, and after Argentina's third goal the match lost its competitive uncertainty. For Algeria, the next matches will therefore be a test of adjustment: the team must improve its finishing, but also find a way not to open up too much against opponents that can punish a lost ball.
Kansas City as a grand stage of the expanded tournament
The match was played at a stadium known as the home of the Kansas City Chiefs, and the local organisational portal Kansas City FWC26 describes Arrowhead Stadium as one of the city's recognisable sporting locations. FIFA uses the name Kansas City Stadium in the official World Cup schedule, which is common practice at major international competitions when venue names are adjusted because of commercial rules. For Kansas City, the meeting between Argentina and Algeria was one of the events confirming the city's broader role in a tournament that is being held for the first time in three host countries: the USA, Canada and Mexico. FIFA states that the 2026 championship is played from 11 June to 19 July and includes 104 matches, making it the largest edition in the history of the competition.
The expansion of the tournament to 48 national teams also changes the context of first-round matches. Argentina's victory is not only a good entry into the group, but also a step toward a more favourable position on a more complex path to the final stages. In the earlier format, national teams entered the round of 16 directly after the group, while the new system introduces a round of 32, meaning that the champion will have to pass more knockout obstacles to win the title. In such a schedule, controlled victories without great physical and emotional expenditure have special value. In Kansas City, Argentina showed that it can open the competition authoritatively, but also rationally enough not to lose sight of the length of the tournament.
Group J got a clear first favourite
After its first appearance, Argentina has three points and a goal difference of 3:0, while Algeria opened the group with a defeat without scoring a goal. According to FIFA's presentation of Group J, Austria and Jordan are also in the same group, which means that the fight for second place and possible progression among the best third-placed national teams will develop through the remaining two rounds. With the victory against Algeria, Argentina immediately set a high bar, but it has not yet finished the job. In an expanded tournament, it is important to maintain continuity, because placement and position in the group affect the path through the knockout phase.
The greatest gain for Argentina is nevertheless the impression of stability. The 3:0 result, Messi's hat-trick, defensive security and calm management of the match make the opening almost ideal for a national team defending the title. Algeria, on the other hand, will have to quickly leave this defeat behind because the competition format still offers room for recovery. In the first round, Kansas City saw a match in which the difference in experience and class was obvious, but also an encounter that already at the beginning of the championship opened one of the main stories of the tournament: can Argentina, with Messi still at the centre of attention, once again withstand the pressure of the road toward the very top.
