Messi's hat-trick in Kansas City gave Argentina a convincing start to their world-title defence
Lionel Messi opened Argentina's defence of the world championship title with a performance that, after the very first match in Group J, became one of the main stories of the 2026 World Cup. Argentina defeated Algeria 3:0 in Kansas City, with all three goals scored by the captain of the reigning world champions. According to the Associated Press report, it was Messi's first hat-trick at World Cups, and the victory gave Argentina a significantly calmer start to the tournament than in 2022, when they lost to Saudi Arabia in Qatar at the start and only after that fought their way to a third world championship title.
The match was played on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, local time in Kansas City, or in the early hours of 17 June according to Central European Time. FIFA lists the match in the official schedule at Kansas City Stadium, while American reports cite Arrowhead Stadium, home of the NFL team Kansas City Chiefs. Argentina's victory was clear in terms of the result, but also symbolically powerful: on his 200th appearance for the national team, Messi reached 16 goals at World Cups and equalled Miroslav Klose's record at the top of the list of the best scorers in the history of the tournament.
Three goals and new chapters in a record-breaking career
ESPN states that Messi scored in the 17th, 60th and 76th minutes. The first goal came after a move through the middle and a precise shot from distance, with which Argentina took early control of the match. The second came at the beginning of the second half, after a rebound following an attempt by Alexis Mac Allister, and the third closed the evening with a shot from the edge of the penalty area. According to Associated Press, Messi left the game shortly after the third goal to ovations from the distinctly pro-Argentina section of the stands.
The hat-trick was also important because of the broader historical context. ESPN reported that Messi, on his 200th appearance for Argentina, thereby became the first footballer to play at six World Cups. The same source states that his total output at World Cups reached 16 goals, the same number held by German record-holder Miroslav Klose. Associated Press adds that with these goals Messi joined Cristiano Ronaldo among players who have scored at five different World Cups.
Messi's evening carried additional weight because it was played almost exactly two decades after his first appearance at World Cups. Associated Press recalls that in 2006 in Germany he played against Serbia and Montenegro and even then got his name among the scorers. Twenty years later, as the 38-year-old captain of a national team defending the title, he opened a new championship with a performance that immediately gave Argentina a points and psychological advantage in the group.
Algeria threatened early, but could not withstand Argentina's rhythm
Algeria had a moment in the opening minutes that could have changed the course of the match. Associated Press reported that Fares Chaibi found the net, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR check for offside. Soon afterward Messi gave Argentina the lead, and after that the match increasingly came under the control of Lionel Scaloni's team. Algeria had periods of possession and attempts to move toward Argentina's penalty area, but did not manage to create enough clear chances to get back into the match.
Algeria coach Vladimir Petković, after the match, according to Associated Press, admitted that his team should not have offered Messi that kind of space and those mistakes for the first goals. Petković pointed out that this is no ordinary footballer and that Messi, in crucial moments, very clearly recognises what needs to be done. Riyad Mahrez, one of the biggest stars of the Algerian national team, also stressed, according to the same source, that Argentina have a player who can change a match by himself.
For Algeria, it was especially problematic that they conceded the first goal after their own promising start. In the continuation, the team had to look for an equaliser and at the same time be careful not to leave too much space for Argentina's transition. Such a balance of forces suited Argentina, who with players such as Rodrigo De Paul, Mac Allister and Messi can quickly punish every lost duel in midfield. The second goal in the 60th minute practically changed the character of the match, because after that Algeria had to take even more risks, while Argentina could patiently wait for the final blow.
Scaloni's team avoided a repeat of the Qatar shock
Argentina arrived in Kansas City as defending champions and one of the national teams under the greatest pressure at the tournament. Precisely for that reason, coach Lionel Scaloni, after the match, according to Associated Press, stressed that opening matches at World Cups are always uncomfortable. He recalled that Argentina stumbled immediately at the start in 2022, but then managed to turn the entire tournament around and win the title. This time there was no similar shock: the 3:0 victory brought three points, a convincing goal difference and confirmation that the national team's main pillars are in competitive rhythm.
Before the tournament there was also a dose of caution because of Messi's physical condition. Associated Press stated in the preview of the match that the Argentina captain had had minor hamstring problems, but that in the warm-up match against Iceland he came off the bench, scored from a penalty kick and played without visible difficulties. The performance against Algeria showed that this problem did not significantly limit his game. Messi was not important only as a scorer, but also as a player who, by dropping between the lines, opened space for his teammates and directed the rhythm of the attack.
Scaloni's Argentina in this match looked considerably more stable than at the beginning of the previous World Cup. The defence was not often exposed to long periods of pressure, the midfield recovered lost balls quickly enough, and the attack had a clear reference point in Messi. That does not mean that after the first round it is already possible to draw conclusions about the defending champions' range, but this kind of start significantly reduces the pressure ahead of the rest of the group. In the format with 48 national teams and 12 groups, according to FIFA rules, the top two national teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams advance to the knockout phase, so three points in the first match are exceptionally valuable.
Kansas City as a grand stage of world football
The match between Argentina and Algeria was also one of the biggest football evenings in Kansas City. Associated Press states that it was played in a strongly pro-Argentina atmosphere, while the Buenos Aires Times report highlights that the capacity of Arrowhead Stadium is 69,045 seats. That stadium, in the American sporting context, is best known as the home of the Kansas City Chiefs, but for the needs of the World Cup it was included in FIFA's official system under the name Kansas City Stadium. In this way, Kansas City received a stage on which American sports infrastructure and global interest in Messi and the Argentina national team came together.
Associated Press, in the broader context, also recalls the role of the Hunt family in the development of football in the United States of America. Lamar Hunt, the founder of the Chiefs and one of the important figures in American football in the second half of the 20th century, also played an important role during the period when the USA organised the 1994 World Cup. His sons Clark and Dan Hunt are today connected with this edition of the tournament, and the match between Argentina and Algeria further confirmed how much the 2026 World Cup was conceived as a major sporting event across the USA, Canada and Mexico.
According to Associated Press, well-known guests from American sporting life were also in the stands, including Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany. Still, the central figure of the evening remained Messi. The very fact that, in his 39th year of life and at his sixth World Cup, he played a match with three goals further strengthened the impression that what was watched in Kansas City was not only the opening match of one group, but also the continuation of one of the longest and most successful international careers in modern football.
What the victory means for Group J
With the victory over Algeria, Argentina took a strong starting position in Group J, which also includes Austria and Jordan. According to FIFA's official schedule, after Kansas City Argentina continue the tournament with a match against Austria on 22 June in Dallas, or Arlington, and then play against Jordan. Associated Press states that Algeria will play their next match against Jordan in Santa Clara, and then against Austria in the final round of the group in Kansas City.
For Argentina, the 3:0 victory means that in the continuation of the group they do not immediately have to play under a results imperative. In the expanded World Cup format, goal difference can play an important role in the standings, especially when comparing third-placed national teams, but after this kind of start the defending champions naturally target one of the first two places. For Algeria, the situation is the opposite: a defeat without a goal scored makes the path toward the knockout phase more difficult, so the match with Jordan gains additional weight already after the first round.
The broader significance of the match, however, goes beyond the group table alone. Argentina showed that they are entering the tournament with a clear plan and with a captain who, despite his age, remains capable of deciding a match at the highest level. Algeria, on the other hand, received a warning about how costly even the smallest mistakes against elite opponents can be at this tournament. After the first round of Group J, most of the talk is about Messi, but for both national teams the key part of the job still lies ahead: Argentina must confirm that this was not just an inspired opening, and Algeria must quickly find an answer if they want to remain in the race for progression.
