Arsenal intensifies interest in Julián Álvarez, Barcelona remains the biggest obstacle

According to new media reports from England and Spain, Arsenal is ready to open talks with Atlético Madrid over a possible transfer of Julián Álvarez, one of the most sought-after forwards on the European market ahead of the summer transfer window. The London club wants to get involved early enough to avoid a situation in which Barcelona takes full control of the negotiations, but the entire deal currently has two major limitations: the high price Atlético would demand and the player’s reported preference for a move to Catalonia. According to a TEAMtalk report, Arsenal is prepared to act more aggressively than before, while Mundo Deportivo states that Álvarez has already made it clear that Barcelona would be his preferred destination. At this stage there is no official confirmation that an agreement has been reached with any club, and the transfer must still be treated as a complex market operation involving several interested parties.

Arsenal wants to use Andrea Berta’s Madrid connections

Arsenal’s interest in Álvarez is especially interesting because of the role of Andrea Berta, the London club’s sporting director. In an official announcement from March 2025, Arsenal confirmed that Berta had taken over the role of sporting director, and the same statement emphasized that before arriving in London he had worked for years in the technical structures of Atlético Madrid. That connection does not guarantee a privileged position in negotiations, but it can be important in understanding how Arsenal assesses the player, the structure of a possible deal and the position of the Madrid club. Berta was part of Atlético’s system during a period in which the club built a reputation as an extremely tough negotiator, especially when it comes to players it considers key to the squad.

According to TEAMtalk, Arsenal is ready to consider a move that would see it get involved ahead of some of the competition, while earlier reports from the same source stated that the London club is monitoring Álvarez as a forward who could add a new dimension in the final third. For Arsenal, such a profile is logical from a sporting point of view: Álvarez can play as a classic number nine, but he often drops between the lines, opens space for wide players and participates in pressing the opponent’s back line. It is precisely this combination of work ethic, movement and finishing that has led several European clubs to view him as a forward who brings not only goals, but also a complete attacking mechanism.

Still, even if Arsenal decides it is ready to financially match the competition, the question of the player’s priorities could be decisive. Mundo Deportivo writes that Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have already explored the possibility of a transfer, but that Álvarez prefers Barcelona. Such information, if confirmed in negotiations, would significantly weaken Arsenal’s position because clubs rarely enter the most expensive deals without a clear signal that the player is ready to accept the project. For that reason, any talks with Atlético would only be the first step, while real progress would depend on whether Arsenal can convince the forward that a return to the Premier League is a better sporting choice than a move to Camp Nou.

Atlético has a strong contractual position and no pressure to sell

Atlético Madrid currently has a very firm starting position. In an official announcement on 12 August 2024, the club stated that it had reached an agreement with Manchester City over the transfer of Álvarez and that the Argentine forward had signed a contract until 2030. That means Atlético, at least formally, is under no pressure to rush into a sale or accept a fee it would consider insufficient. The long contract is one of the key reasons why exceptionally high figures are being mentioned in the Spanish media, including estimates that serious negotiations would require approaching a figure of around 150 million euros.

Such an estimate does not necessarily mean that the final transfer fee will actually reach that level, but it shows how strongly Atlético wants to protect the player’s value. Álvarez arrived in Madrid after a very successful spell at Manchester City, and the English club stated upon his departure that in two seasons he made 103 appearances, scored 36 goals and helped win six major trophies. Atlético did not sign him as a short-term acquisition, but as a forward around whom a team can be built during his best years. From that perspective, a sale after only two seasons would make sense only if the financial terms were exceptionally favorable or if the player’s pressure became so strong that it changed the dynamic.

Sporting data also explains why there is such strong interest around him. According to LaLiga’s official statistics for the 2025/26 season, Álvarez made 29 league appearances for Atlético, scoring eight goals and providing four assists. Those numbers alone do not show his full influence, because he is a forward who often works outside the penalty area, moves into half-spaces and helps with pressing. For clubs such as Arsenal and Barcelona, that profile can be particularly attractive because it fits systems that require a mobile forward, not only a pure finisher.

Barcelona sees him as the ideal number nine, but the price changes the plans

According to reports in the Catalan media, Barcelona has placed Álvarez very high on the list of candidates to become the new central figure in attack. The reasons are clear: he is 26 years old, he has already played in the most demanding competitions, won major trophies with club and country, and tactically he is not limited to a single role. In its official announcement, Atlético described him as a world and continental champion with Argentina and as a forward who is fast, technically gifted and capable of linking play with teammates. These are precisely the elements that make him attractive to Barcelona, especially in a period in which the club is looking for long-term stability in the striker position.

But Barcelona, as in recent years, must deal with the financial and registration frameworks of Spanish football. In its rules on the squad cost limit, LaLiga states that clubs can plan sporting expenditure only within the approved maximum, and that the declared limit does not automatically mean that the full amount can be spent. In practice, this means that every major purchase must be aligned not only with the transfer fee and the player’s salary, but also with registration space, possible departures from the squad and the overall budget. That is why even Barcelona, if the player prefers Camp Nou, cannot act as though the transfer is only a matter of sporting desire.

According to available reports, the price is precisely why the Catalan club is also monitoring alternative solutions in parallel. That does not mean it has given up on Álvarez, but that the board must have a plan for a scenario in which Atlético refuses to negotiate or insists on a figure that would place too much strain on the rest of the transfer window. In such a situation, Barcelona must weigh a long-term investment in a younger forward against a short-term solution with a player who would immediately bring goals, experience and commercial weight. That is exactly why, according to Football España citing Mundo Deportivo, Harry Kane’s name also appears in Barcelona’s attacking plans.

Harry Kane as a high-profile alternative, but not an easy deal

Harry Kane, according to the same report on Barcelona’s search for a forward, is mentioned as one of the biggest names on the list if a deal for Álvarez proves unfeasible. Bayern Munich stated in an official announcement from August 2023 that the English striker had signed a contract until 30 June 2027, which gives the German club a strong negotiating position. Kane is not only a big name, but also a player who has maintained an exceptional level of efficiency in the Bundesliga. According to official Bundesliga data for the 2025/26 season, he scored 36 goals and recorded five assists in 31 league appearances for Bayern.

Because of those numbers, Kane would represent a different type of solution for Barcelona than Álvarez. The Argentine would be a longer-term project, with greater resale value potential and the possibility of building the attack around him for several seasons. Kane, on the other hand, would be the most proven goalscorer among the options being mentioned, a player who can immediately take responsibility in the penalty area and raise the team’s finishing level. But his arrival would not be straightforward: Bayern has no sporting reason to easily let go of a forward with such output, and any potential transfer would also have to satisfy the high financial demands of a player who remains among the most productive forwards in Europe.

For Barcelona, Kane is therefore a realistic alternative only if special circumstances arise, for example if talks about his future in Munich fail to progress or if Bayern decides it is better to cash in on a transfer in time rather than enter the final phase of the contract with an uncertain outcome. At present, according to the available information, there is no official confirmation that Bayern and Barcelona have opened transfer negotiations. In that sense, Kane’s name says more about the breadth of Barcelona’s search for a new number nine than about a deal close to completion.

The player’s desire could shape the entire race

In modern transfers, the size of the fee and contractual status are often decisive, but the player’s will can still change the course of negotiations. If Álvarez truly has a clear preference for Barcelona, as Mundo Deportivo writes, Arsenal would have to offer not only a financially strong package to Atlético, but also a sufficiently convincing sporting project to the player himself. The Premier League remains the richest and most visible club market, and a return to England could make sense for Álvarez given his experience at Manchester City. But Barcelona carries a different kind of appeal, especially for an Argentine forward who could become the central part of a new attacking structure at Camp Nou.

Atlético will try to maintain control of the process throughout. The Madrid club has no reason to lower the price at an early stage of the transfer window, especially if it knows that clubs from the Premier League, LaLiga and Ligue 1 are interested in the player. The more interested parties there are, the greater the possibility that Atlético will try to raise the final value of the deal or at least obtain payment terms that suit it. On the other hand, prolonged uncertainty can create pressure in the dressing room and around the club, so the management will have to carefully assess how far it wants to let the public transfer saga run.

For Arsenal, entering talks early makes sense even if Barcelona remains the favorite in the player’s eyes. The London club is thereby sending a message that it is looking for a top-level forward and does not want to wait for the final stage of the market, when prices often rise and options narrow. If it turns out that Álvarez is not available or that his decision is too strongly oriented toward Barcelona, Arsenal will at least have a clearer picture before shifting focus to other options. In transfer windows, such timely assessment is often worth almost as much as the transfer itself.

Three clubs, three different calculations

This transfer story is therefore not only a matter of one offer and one answer. Arsenal is looking for a forward who can raise the team’s ceiling and fit into an intense style of play. Barcelona is looking for a new number nine who could define the period after Robert Lewandowski, but it must operate within the financial restrictions of the Spanish system. Atlético Madrid wants either to keep or sell at an exceptionally high price a player under a long-term contract, aware that selling such a profile would leave a major sporting gap that is not easy to fill.

That is why the next steps will be more important than the media signals themselves. If Arsenal really opens formal talks with Atlético, it would confirm that the London club does not view Álvarez merely as an unattainable wish. If Barcelona increases the pressure, it will become clearer how much it is willing to risk in a financially demanding deal. If Atlético sticks to a high price and the long-term contract, the race could turn into a test of patience for everyone involved. Until then, according to the available information as of 2 June 2026, Álvarez remains an Atlético Madrid player, Arsenal is trying to enter the race, Barcelona is seen as his preferred destination, and Harry Kane remains the most high-profile alternative in Catalan plans.
