Bournemouth sign Portugal international António Silva from Benfica in transfer worth up to €30 million
AFC Bournemouth have officially confirmed the signing of Portugal international António Silva from Benfica, with the English top-flight club bringing in one of the most experienced European centre-backs in his age group. The transfer was completed on 1 August 2026, and Benfica stated in a notification to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission that they will receive a fixed fee of €25 million for the full transfer of the player's rights. An additional €5 million is linked to the achievement of agreed objectives, meaning the total value of the deal could reach €30 million. According to figures published by the British media, this represents approximately £21.4 million in guaranteed compensation and a further £4.3 million in potential bonuses. Benfica also announced that intermediary service costs may amount to as much as 9.5 per cent of the transfer value.
The 22-year-old defender is therefore leaving Portugal for the first time in his professional career and moving to the Premier League. Bournemouth are signing him as an important reinforcement for a team that will also compete in the UEFA Europa League in the 2026/27 season, having finished sixth in the previous campaign to secure the first qualification for European competition in the club's history. Silva is expected to occupy a prominent role in the defensive line of new head coach Marco Rose, who took charge of the team after the end of the 2025/26 season. His arrival is particularly important following the departure of Argentine centre-back Marcos Senesi to Tottenham, whom he joined after his contract with Bournemouth expired. The English club have therefore reacted quickly to the loss of an experienced left-footed defender and brought in a player who, despite his youth, already has a large number of matches at domestic, European and international level behind him.
Benfica officially confirm financial details
Bournemouth did not disclose the transfer fee in their announcement, but the financial details were confirmed by Benfica through an official notification to the capital market regulator. The Portuguese club stated that the sale of all rights to the player had been agreed for €25 million, with a variable payment that could increase the deal to a total of €30 million. This removed the uncertainty that had accompanied the final stage of negotiations, during which various figures had appeared publicly. The final structure shows that most of the fee is guaranteed, while the remaining amount will depend on sporting objectives defined in the agreement between the clubs.
In British currency, according to a Sky Sports report, Bournemouth will pay around £21.4 million as a fixed fee, while bonuses could add approximately £4.3 million. The combined figure of £25.7 million roughly corresponds to the maximum value of €30 million announced by Benfica, taking into account the usual differences caused by exchange rates and rounding. This is a significant investment for Bournemouth, but it is also a transfer through which the club acquire a player who can immediately compete for a place in the starting line-up. At the same time, Benfica are generating income from a footballer developed within their own system, which has been an important part of the Lisbon club's sporting and business model for many years.
According to a Reuters report, Silva signed a five-year contract with Bournemouth. Such a length of agreement shows that the club do not view him merely as a short-term replacement for Senesi, but as one of the potential pillars of the defence in the next development cycle. Bournemouth have invested in younger players with growth potential in recent seasons, and the Portugal international fits that profile. His age leaves room for further progress, while his experience at Benfica reduces the risk associated with adapting to the demands of high-intensity matches.
First professional challenge outside Portugal
Silva has spent his entire development to date with Benfica. He entered the club's system in 2014 through the development and training centre in Viseu and then joined the academy at Benfica Campus. He progressed through several youth categories and was part of the generation that won the UEFA Youth League, Europe's most important club competition for junior players, in the 2021/22 season. During that period, he also won the Portuguese junior championship, establishing himself as one of the most promising defensive players in the academy.
He made his debut for Benfica's first team on 27 August 2022 in a 3-0 league victory over Boavista. He was only 18 years old, but very quickly earned an important place in the squad. In his first senior season, he became a regular member of the defence and helped win the 2022/23 Portuguese championship. His rise was fast enough for him to receive a call-up to Portugal's senior national team that same year and feature at the World Cup in Qatar.
In their farewell announcement, Benfica stated that Silva was leaving after 183 official appearances for the first team, with ten goals scored. The club's overview of his contribution includes 108 matches in the Portuguese league, 33 in the Champions League, 20 in the Portuguese Cup, eight in the League Cup, eight in the Europa League, four at the Club World Cup and two in the Portuguese Super Cup. Bournemouth stated in their announcement that he had made a total of 235 senior appearances for Benfica, showing that the official figures provided by the two clubs are based on different scopes of competitions and teams. For assessing his experience, the most important figure is that he had already played 183 official matches for the first team before his 23rd birthday, including more than 40 appearances in UEFA's main club competitions.
Four trophies and early assumption of responsibility
During four full seasons in the senior team, Silva won four trophies with Benfica. In addition to the 2022/23 league title, he won the Portuguese Super Cups in 2023 and 2025, as well as the League Cup in the 2024/25 season. Benfica highlighted that in September 2024 he became the club's youngest player in the 21st century to reach 100 official appearances. He passed the milestone of 150 matches in September 2025, in a league victory against AFS.
His final season in Lisbon provided further confirmation that he had developed from a promising player into one of the team's leaders. During the 2025/26 season, he played 41 matches and scored one goal, while at the beginning of the 2026/27 campaign he wore the captain's armband in Benfica's first two official Europa League qualifying matches. His departure came immediately after those games, meaning the transfer was completed at a moment when he had already taken part in the beginning of the Portuguese club's new competitive year. In their farewell message, Benfica emphasised his journey from the academy to the captaincy, while the player told his teammates that throughout his four years with the first team he had always tried to give his maximum.
For Bournemouth, that level of responsibility is just as important as Silva's technical quality. President of football operations Tiago Pinto said in the English club's official announcement that Bournemouth had been monitoring the Portuguese defender for a long time. Pinto pointed out that Silva, despite being only 22 years old, had gained exceptional experience in domestic, European and international competitions. According to him, such experience has shaped him into a defender with pronounced maturity and leadership qualities, and the club expect him to continue his development under Marco Rose.
International experience since his teenage years
Silva progressed through Portugal's national-team selections from under-16 level to the senior side. According to data from the Portuguese Football Federation, he has made 20 appearances for the senior national team and spent 1,328 minutes on the pitch. He made his debut as a starter on 17 November 2022, only a few months after his first appearance for Benfica's first team. He was selected for the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 European Championship and was also part of the Portugal squad that won the UEFA Nations League in 2025.
In total, counting all Portuguese age-group selections, he has accumulated 48 international appearances and scored two goals, according to the federation. His international experience is important for Bournemouth because the club will compete simultaneously in the English league and European competition for the first time. Travel, shorter intervals between matches and different tactical demands create a need for a broader and more experienced rotation. Silva regularly played in the Champions League, Europa League and domestic competitions with Benfica, so the rhythm of several matches per week is not unfamiliar to him.
Nevertheless, moving to the Premier League brings a different profile of challenges. The English championship is characterised by high intensity, a large number of physically powerful forwards and frequent rapid transitions between phases of play. Silva will also have to adapt to the fact that Bournemouth will be exposed to longer periods of defending in many matches than was the case with Benfica in the Portuguese league. On the other hand, his composure in possession, experience of playing under pressure and ability to participate in building attacks should suit a team that wants to maintain a proactive approach even against the strongest opponents.
Key role in Marco Rose's new project
Bournemouth enter the 2026/27 season following a historic result. Sixth place in the Premier League secured their first qualification for European competition and simultaneously created the need to strengthen the squad further. The club are no longer preparing a squad solely for the domestic league and cups, but also for a continental competition in which they will encounter different styles of play. Silva's arrival therefore has broader significance than simply replacing one centre-back with another.
Marco Rose was appointed as the new head coach on a three-year contract, and Bournemouth confirmed his arrival back in April 2026, with his work beginning after the end of the previous season. The German coach is known for a demanding approach without the ball, aggressive pressing and the need for defensive players to make quick decisions in the space behind a high-positioned team. At Benfica, Silva played in systems that required centre-backs to be secure in their passing and willing to take risks when advancing from the back line. His development in such an environment is one of the reasons Bournemouth see him as a long-term solution.
Senesi's departure left a gap in experience and ball distribution from defence. Tottenham confirmed in June that the Argentine international would arrive on a free transfer after his Bournemouth contract expired, and the club from England's south coast had to find a player capable of immediately taking on a large number of minutes. Silva is younger than Senesi but has considerable experience at European level and in high-pressure matches involving the pursuit of trophies. Silva: The mentality is always to win
In his first statement after the transfer, Silva said that he was very happy to have arrived and that it was a pleasure for him to play for Bournemouth and in the Premier League. He stressed that he could not wait to start the season with his teammates and that he was joining his new club with a winning mentality. He also said that he would give everything and play for the supporters, emphasising that the club had the conditions to help the team perform well on the pitch.
Such statements reflect the expectations resulting from the size of the transfer fee, his international status and the role Bournemouth have in mind for him. Silva is not arriving as a development project without significant senior experience, but as a player who should immediately increase competition within the defence. At the same time, the Premier League will be the first test of his ability to confirm his quality outside the familiar environment of Benfica and Portuguese football. The five-year contract gives him time to adapt, but the sporting circumstances indicate that he will assume responsibility from the beginning of the season.
For Benfica, the transfer closes an important cycle for another player developed in their own academy. Silva is leaving after more than a decade within the club's system, four trophies won and a captaincy role at the end of his period in Lisbon. For Bournemouth, his arrival marks the continuation of the club's more ambitious positioning following their historic entry into Europe. Should he adapt quickly to the speed and physical demands of English football, the Portugal international could become one of the key players in Rose's team during a season in which Bournemouth will attempt to balance the Premier League with European commitments for the first time.
