Breel Embolo delayed by ESTA review, Switzerland without Rennes striker in United States World Cup preparations

Switzerland travelled to the United States on 2 June 2026 for their final World Cup preparations without Breel Embolo after his ESTA authorization was placed under additional review. The federation expects a quick solution, while reports link the case to an earlier Basel court matter, leaving Murat Yakin waiting for the experienced Rennes striker

Breel Embolo detained due to an additional ESTA check, Switzerland travelled to the USA without an important striker

The Swiss national football team travelled to the United States of America for the final part of its preparations for the 2026 World Cup, but Breel Embolo, one of the most experienced forwards in head coach Murat Yakin's squad, was not on the plane on 2 June 2026. According to the statement and information reported by the Swiss association and international media, Embolo's ESTA travel authorisation for the USA was placed under additional review shortly before the team's departure. This means that the 29-year-old Rennes striker, although according to the association he had previously had an approved authorisation, could not travel with the rest of the national team at that moment.

The Swiss Football Association announced that Embolo's ESTA authorisation had been approved until the morning of departure, but that around 10:30 a notification arrived stating that the application had been moved into an additional review procedure. The association stated that it is in contact with the competent authorities and expects the team striker to join as soon as the administrative obstacle is removed. According to reports by Reuters and British media, the Swiss camp expected Embolo to be able to join his teammates later that same day or the following day, but at the moment of departure he did not have the necessary confirmation to board the flight to the United States.

The authorisation had been approved, then returned for review

The case attracted attention because it was not a usual injury, a change to the player list or a sporting reason, but rather travel documentation required to enter the USA under the Visa Waiver Program. According to the U.S. Department of State, travellers from countries participating in that programme, including Switzerland, must have a valid ESTA authorisation before boarding an aircraft or ship bound for the USA. ESTA is not a classic visa and in itself does not guarantee entry into the country, because the final decision on permission to enter is made by U.S. border service officers at the point of entry, but without a valid authorisation a traveller generally cannot board a flight under the visa waiver regime.

Official U.S. websites state that a decision on an ESTA application can take up to 72 hours and that an approved authorisation usually remains valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. That is precisely why the timeframe is particularly sensitive for Embolo: Switzerland planned the final phase of preparations in the USA, and the first Group B match at the World Cup is played on 13 June against Qatar. For head coach Yakin and his coaching staff, the most important thing is for the administrative procedure to be resolved before the start of the tournament, but also early enough for the player to join training, adjust to the time zone and take part in tactical preparations.

According to the available information, it has not been officially confirmed that the ESTA check is directly linked to one specific legal matter from Embolo's past. However, Swiss and British media report that the additional check could be connected to a court case from 2018 in Basel. Since U.S. authorities generally do not comment on individual travel requests, it is currently unclear whether that case is formally the reason for the additional review or whether it is part of a broader administrative procedure.

A court case from Basel is mentioned in the background

The legal part of the story relates to an incident from May 2018 in Basel. According to a report by SWI swissinfo.ch, which cites the Swiss agency Keystone-SDA, the Appeals Court in Basel confirmed in September 2025 an earlier verdict against Embolo for multiple threats during an argument. According to the same report, the court rejected his appeal and confirmed a suspended financial penalty of 45 daily amounts of 3,000 Swiss francs each, with a probation period of two years. Embolo denied in the court proceedings that he had made legally relevant threats, but the court, according to the agency, accepted witness statements as the basis for upholding the verdict.

It is important to distinguish that court case from the current travel procedure. In its communication, the Swiss association emphasised that this concerns an ESTA authorisation that has been placed under additional review, and not a sporting suspension, the removal of the player from the list or a final decision that Embolo cannot take part in the tournament. According to reports that appeared on 2 June 2026, the association's expectation was that the situation would be resolved quickly. Such wording indicates that the Swiss side treats the problem as an urgent administrative obstacle, and not as an issue that should at this moment change the national team's plans for the World Cup.

Such situations are particularly sensitive ahead of major tournaments because national teams plan every day of preparation. Flights, training sessions, media obligations, medical protocols and security procedures are defined weeks in advance, and the absence of one important player can disrupt the rhythm of the group even if the problem is resolved quickly. In Embolo's case, additional weight is added by the fact that he is a striker with extensive experience at final tournaments and a player who can cover several attacking roles in the Swiss system.

Switzerland continued its final preparations without one of its most experienced strikers

According to the official schedule of the Swiss Football Association, from 25 May to 1 June 2026 the national team completed the first part of its preparations in St. Gallen, while the flight from Zürich to Los Angeles was planned for Tuesday, 2 June. During that period, the players completed their final European training sessions and a friendly match against Jordan, which Switzerland won 4:1 on 31 May. According to media reports, Embolo was among the scorers in that match, which further highlighted his sporting importance immediately before the departure for North America.

The preparation plan also includes a friendly match against Australia on 6 June at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. That test should be important for fine-tuning the team before its first appearance at the World Cup. If Embolo joins in time, the coaching staff will have the opportunity to include him in the final tactical details. If the procedure drags on, Yakin will have to assess how much he can rely on a striker who, in that case, would miss part of the acclimatisation and training in the USA.

Embolo has for years been one of the recognisable attacking players in the Swiss national team. According to data reported by international media, he has made 85 appearances for Switzerland and scored 23 goals. He played at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, as well as at the 2016, 2020 and 2024 European Championships. His experience in high-pressure matches is particularly important for a national team that in recent years has regularly advanced from the group stage of major competitions, but has been seeking a step forward into the later stages of knockout tournaments.

The Rennes striker is an important part of Yakin's plan

In club football, Embolo has been a Stade Rennais player since September 2025. The French club then announced that the Swiss international had signed a four-year contract after leaving Monaco. Before arriving in Rennes, he played for Basel, Schalke, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Monaco, and throughout his career he has often been valued for his physical strength, his play with his back to goal, his runs in behind and his ability to link the midfield with the attack. Precisely that type of profile is useful for a national team that does not rely only on classic finishing in attack, but also on creating space for wingers and midfielders arriving from the second line.

For Switzerland, the problem does not come at a moment without alternatives, but it does come at an awkward time. On the official list and in the wider squad there are other attacking options, among them Mohamed Amdouni, Kwadwo Duah, Cedric Itten, Dan Ndoye, Ruben Vargas, Andi Zeqiri and other offensive players. Still, because of his experience, physical presence and previous appearances at major tournaments, Embolo is a different type of striker from most of his teammates. If he is fully available, he is expected to compete for significant minutes already in the first group match.

Head coach Murat Yakin has built the national team in the current cycle around a core of experienced players, including Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji, Gregor Kobel, Ricardo Rodriguez and Denis Zakaria. FIFA, in its preview of the Swiss team for the World Cup, highlighted precisely the combination of experienced internationals and younger players. In such a structure, Embolo has the role of a footballer who knows the rhythm of major tournaments, but is still at an age at which he can handle demanding physical tasks.

Group B starts on 13 June, the first two matches are played in the USA

According to the official schedule of FIFA and the Swiss Football Association, Switzerland will play at the 2026 World Cup in Group B with Qatar, Bosnia and Herzegovina and host Canada. The first match against Qatar is scheduled for 13 June in Santa Clara, at the stadium that FIFA lists in official materials as San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. The second meeting, against Bosnia and Herzegovina, is played on 18 June at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood near Los Angeles. The third group match against Canada is planned for 24 June at BC Place in Vancouver.

  • 13 June 2026 Qatar – Switzerland, San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, Santa Clara
  • 18 June 2026 Switzerland – Bosnia and Herzegovina, SoFi Stadium, Inglewood
  • 24 June 2026 Switzerland – Canada, BC Place, Vancouver

The schedule further explains why the issue of Embolo's travel is important. Switzerland's first two matches are played in the United States, so without proper travel authorisation the striker cannot take part in the key part of preparations or in the national team's first appearances at the tournament. The third match is played in Canada, but the team's logistics and official competition plans are tied to an earlier arrival and stay in the USA. For that reason, every delay in the administrative solution is potentially relevant from a sporting point of view, even if it ultimately proves to be short-lived.

The 2026 World Cup is the first edition of the tournament with 48 national teams and the first joint hosting by three countries, the United States, Canada and Mexico. FIFA has announced that 104 matches will be played, which is significantly more than in the previous format with 32 national teams. For national teams, this means a different tournament structure, more travel and greater logistical pressure, especially in groups that include matches in different host countries. In such a schedule, Switzerland is first tied to California, and then travels to Vancouver for the conclusion of the group stage.

The association expects a quick solution, but official confirmation is still awaited

The Swiss Football Association is for now acting calmly and says it is in contact with the competent authorities. According to the available information from 2 June 2026, Embolo has not been removed from the national team plans and is expected to join the team as soon as he receives the required authorisation. In practice, the outcome depends on the U.S. review procedure and on whether the authorisation will be confirmed again in time for the continuation of preparations. Until such confirmation is publicly announced, it is most precise to speak of a temporary travel delay, and not of a final ban on appearing at the World Cup.

For a national team entering the tournament with the ambition of advancing from the group, the case comes as an unwanted complication in a period in which calm is usually sought. In recent years Switzerland has gained a reputation as a stable and organised team that rarely loses its competitive structure, but in attack it still relies on players who can take advantage of a small number of chances. Embolo has an important role in that picture, not only because of his statistics but also because of the way he changes the profile of the attack. That is why developments around his ESTA authorisation will be one of the key topics of Switzerland's preparations in the days after the team's arrival in the United States.
