Anniversary Fig Days in Krk: ten days of gastronomy, heritage, workshops and music
The town of Krk on the island of the same name in the northern Adriatic will be all about figs from 21 to 30 August 2026. The anniversary 20th edition of Fig Days will bring together a special gastronomic offering, a sales exhibition of local products, educational and creative workshops, interpretation of Frankopan heritage and music programmes at several locations around the town. According to the published programme of the event, the main part will take place from 28 to 30 August near Veli Park, while the hospitality offering dedicated to figs will last for all ten days. Fig Days in Krk have been held since 2007, and in this year's edition the Krk Tourist Board particularly highlights the continuity of the event and its role in connecting local agriculture, gastronomy, culture and tourism. For visitors planning their arrival as a multi-day stay, information about accommodation in the town of Krk can be a practical addition when planning the programme.
The anniversary comes in a year in which Kvarner holds the title of European Region of Gastronomy 2026. The International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism, IGCAT, officially awarded Kvarner this recognition following a candidacy process that emphasised local gastronomic heritage, product quality, cooperation between different sectors and sustainable development. An event that views a traditional Mediterranean food not only as an ingredient on a plate but also as part of local identity, knowledge, agricultural practice and creative expression fits well into precisely this framework. Fig Days remain focused on a specific local theme while placing it within the broader context of Kvarner's contemporary tourism and gastronomic offering.
Twenty years of an event dedicated to figs
Figs have been present in Mediterranean diets and landscapes for centuries, and in Krk they have become the central motif of an event that for two decades has sought to connect tradition with new ways of presenting local products. According to the Krk Tourist Board, one of the important goals of Fig Days is to introduce visitors to the history, cultivation, nutritional value and diverse uses of this fruit. The programme therefore does not end with tasting: alongside food and drink, it includes lectures, workshops, the distribution of seedlings, the work of local producers and activities that connect figs with the town's heritage.
The continuity of the project has also received national recognition. The Town of Krk announced at the end of December 2025 that the Krk Tourist Board had won the Bronze Charter of the Suncokret Rural Tourism Award - The Sunflower Award 2025 for Fig Days in the category "Accessible Tourism and Strengthening the Rural Community". According to that announcement, the award was given for an event that promotes island culture through education, local products and inclusive activities while connecting producers, hospitality businesses, associations and institutions. Ahead of the 20th edition, this recognition gives additional significance to an event that has grown from a seasonal gastronomic gathering into a multi-day programme with educational and cultural components.
From starters to desserts: figs as a gastronomic motif
From 21 to 30 August, hospitality establishments in the town of Krk will prepare special dishes, desserts and drinks in which figs appear in a variety of roles. According to the Fig Days programme, the participating establishments are Bistro Portella, Casa del Padrone, Cocktail Bar Volsonis, Hotel Marina - Restaurant Marina Blue, Konoba Marija, Konoba Pod Prevolt, Konoba Pud Brest, Malo Misto Wine&Dine, Pizzeria Mala Vrata, Restoran Fidel From the Sea, Restoran Harbour Hotel Maritime, Restoran Oliva Krk Premium Camping Resort, Slastičarna Toš and Street Food Mezzino Ježevac Premium Camping Resort. The breadth of the list shows that the event does not rely on just one type of cuisine, but introduces figs into restaurant, tavern, pastry-shop, bar and street-food concepts.
The menus will feature combinations ranging from familiar Mediterranean pairings to distinctly contemporary interpretations. The starters include crispy bruschetta with burrata, prosciutto and dried fig, as well as baked figs with cheese and Krk prosciutto. In the main courses, figs are combined with meat, seafood flavours, pasta and sauces: announced dishes include venison medallions in fig and cinnamon sauce, pork loin with dried figs and homemade gnocchi, beef steak in a sauce of Adriatic prawns and figs, and pork tenderloin with fig sauce served on purée.
A special place is reserved for šurlice, traditional island pasta, which in this year's offering appears in combinations with prawns and figs and with figs and gorgonzola. There are also Pizza Smokvica and Mezzino Smoky Burger, while visitors inclined towards more unusual combinations will be able to choose veal carpaccio with fig, curd cheese and almonds or grilled duck liver with fig and red wine sauce. Such an offering shows why figs in contemporary cuisine do not have to be regarded solely as dessert fruit: their sweetness and texture can be used as a contrast to salty, fatty or more intense flavours.
The sweet part of the programme remains equally diverse. The announcement mentions panna cotta, pancakes, crostate, crumble, cheesecake, ice cream and a waffle basket with fig and pistachio cream. Figs will also appear in drinks, including liqueur. Over the ten days, the gastronomic programme therefore functions as a kind of parallel stage of the event: while during the final weekend most public events move to Veli Park, Vela Placa and Kamplin Square, hospitality establishments will offer their own interpretations of the same ingredient.
Veli Park becomes the centre of the final weekend
From Friday 28 to Sunday 30 August, the area around Veli Park will be the central location of Fig Days. A sales exhibition of fig products will be held there every day, while the programme will be complemented by creative workshops, historical activities, lectures and activities for children and adults. The concept of the final weekend is designed so that the same motif can be explored through several different experiences: tasting, conversations with producers, historical interpretation, handicrafts, visual-art techniques and music.
Friday, 28 August, begins at 9:30 a.m. with a ceremonial opening featuring the historical presentation "The Fig on the Frankopan Table", prepared by the Knezovi krčki Frankopani Association. At 10 a.m., the distribution of fig seedlings follows. This activity holds a particularly symbolic place in the anniversary programme because it recalls the event's long-term connection with the cultivation and renewal of this Mediterranean crop, rather than only with its gastronomic consumption. In the afternoon, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., the youngest participants will come to Veli Park for a workshop on making a felt-wool brooch with a fig motif, led by Jasminka Gršković from BlueSheep; the workshop is intended for children aged six to 14.
At 6 p.m., the programme moves to the Great Council Hall of the Town of Krk. A lecture by Dr Prgomet looking back at 20 years of Fig Days has been announced, along with the presentation of the Žene za otok Association project "From Fig to Entrepreneurship" and a special performance by the Kurikta vocal group. The evening ends at Vela Placa, where Gradska glazba Krk will perform at 8 p.m. In this way, the first day of the final weekend connects the three main threads of the entire event: the history and cultivation of figs, contemporary local initiatives and the cultural programme in the town's historic centre.
Frankopan heritage and an acoustic concert by Vatra
Saturday, 29 August, begins with a creative workshop for painting bags with a fig motif. The workshop, led by Katarina Kalčić, will take place from 10 a.m. to noon in Veli Park. At 11 a.m., the interpretive walk "Frankopan Heritage of the Town of Krk", organised by the Knezovi krčki Frankopani Association, departs from Vela Placa. According to the programme, advance registration via info@visitkrk.city is mandatory for the walk, so visitors wishing to participate should take this into account before arriving.
In the afternoon, the programme returns to Veli Park, where a cyanotype workshop will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. This is a photographic and graphic technique recognisable by its blue tones, and its inclusion in the programme further expands the event's creative component beyond conventional gastronomic formats. Saturday evening is reserved for one of the most prominent musical events of the anniversary edition. The band Vatra will perform at Kamplin Square at 9 p.m., in an acoustic format. The date of the Krk performance on 29 August has also been confirmed in announcements for the band's summer tour.
Sunday, 30 August, once again begins with a programme for children. From 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., a workshop for felting a fig-shaped pendant will be held in Veli Park, intended for children aged three to 14. At 11 a.m., the interpretive walk through Frankopan heritage once again departs from Vela Placa, also with mandatory advance registration. From 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Knezovi krčki Frankopani Association will lead the historical workshop "Little Frankopans" in Veli Park for children aged seven to 12. On the final day, the programme thus retains its emphasis on discovering local history through participation rather than observation alone.
Art & Wine: the fig as a motif on canvas
One of the distinctive creative activities of Fig Days will be the Art & Wine workshop in the Small Council Hall. According to the event programme, it will take place on 30 August starting at 5 p.m. and will be led by Alenka Goldner Sučić, an art education professor specialising in painting. Participants will work with acrylic paint on canvas, and the motif will once again be inspired by figs. The organiser will provide all necessary materials, so previous painting experience is not required for participation.
The workshop combines visual creativity, socialising and Krk wine, transforming the fig from a gastronomic ingredient into a visual motif. Such an approach aptly describes the broader concept of the anniversary Fig Days: the same theme runs through the plate, historical storytelling, education, handicrafts and contemporary creative techniques. Registration for Art & Wine is required via info@visitkrk.city, and due to the limited number of places, the organisers give priority to people who have not participated in previous workshops.
Ten exhibitors and products taking figs beyond the kitchen
The sales exhibition near Veli Park from 28 to 30 August will bring together ten exhibitors. According to the programme, the offering will not be limited to fresh and dried fruit or traditional jams. Visitors will be able to find freeze-dried figs, organic honey with figs, dried figs in honey, fig jam with honey, fig chutney and products in which figs are combined with goji berries and spicy flavours. Alongside the food section, natural cosmetics, handicrafts and decorative items with fig motifs will also be presented.
Among the exhibitors from the town of Krk are OPG Magriž, OPG Rimbaldo, KuSshh, OPG Mendula Ivane Prah, OPG Elena and Piccola Stella. OPG Magriž will present fresh and dried figs, dried-fig jam and other homemade products, while OPG Rimbaldo will bring jams, fig cakes, fresh figs and gift packages. KuSshh uses figs in rakija and preserves, while OPG Mendula Ivane Prah incorporates them into natural cosmetics. OPG Elena presents fig-leaf hydrolate and soap made from it, while Piccola Stella transfers the fig motif onto ceramic and wooden objects.
It is precisely this part of the programme that demonstrates the economic dimension of the event. The fig is presented not only as a fruit eaten in season, but also as a raw material for processing and as a motif that can gain new value through family farms, small producers, crafts and design. In its explanation of the Suncokret Rural Tourism Award, the Town of Krk highlighted precisely the empowerment of local producers and the involvement of the community as one of the values of Fig Days.
An event connecting gastronomy with the identity of a place
The 20th edition of Fig Days arrives at a time when gastronomy in Kvarner is increasingly viewed as part of a destination's identity rather than merely an additional tourist service. When awarding the title European Region of Gastronomy 2026, IGCAT particularly highlighted local gastronomy, cultural heritage, community cooperation and sustainable tourism. On a smaller, town-level scale, Fig Days connect precisely these elements: a local ingredient, producers, hospitality, education, historical interpretation and a cultural programme.
For visitors, this means that the content is not concentrated in a single event or a single evening. The gastronomic offering begins on 21 August and continues until 30 August, while the final three-day programme is distributed between Veli Park, Vela Placa, Kamplin Square, and the Great and Small Council Halls. Such a structure makes it possible to experience the event through different interests: someone may come for a special menu, another for the sales exhibition or a workshop, and someone else for Frankopan heritage or the acoustic concert. For a multi-day visit, it may be useful to check accommodation near the centre of the events in Krk in advance, especially for the final weekend from 28 to 30 August.
Twenty years after the first edition, the purpose of the event remains recognisable: to present the fig as part of living island heritage while at the same time opening space for it in contemporary gastronomy, entrepreneurship, education and creativity. The anniversary programme is therefore not merely an overview of recipes or fair-style sales. It demonstrates how one simple Mediterranean fruit can connect agriculture, cuisine, history, music and the local community in an event that has been developing for two decades.
