Christian Eriksen after collapse in Odense: I am fine, the defibrillator did what it was implanted to do

Christian Eriksen spoke out on 8 June 2026 after a new worrying incident on the football pitch and said that he is fine, that he is at home with his family and that he now wants to focus on recovery and further medical assessments. The Danish midfielder collapsed the day before, on 7 June, during a friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine at the stadium in Odense, which immediately brought back memories of his cardiac arrest in 2021 at the European Championship. According to his Instagram post, reported by Scandinavian media, this time it was not the same situation as five years ago, because the implanted defibrillator reacted exactly as it was supposed to. Eriksen thanked the doctors, medical staff, teammates and fans for their support and said that the most important thing for him is to be with his family and calmly go through all the next steps of recovery. The Danish association and the national team stated that they are in regular contact with him and that they are also taking care of the players and members of the staff who once again witnessed an extremely stressful situation on the pitch.

Collapse in the 65th minute and suspension of the match

The incident happened in the 65th minute of the friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine, played on Sunday, 7 June 2026, at Odense Stadium. According to an AP agency report, Eriksen grabbed his chest and fell onto the pitch at a moment when he was not involved in a duel, after which he immediately received medical assistance. The Danish Football Association lists the match in its match database as a test match of the senior national team, starting at 18:30 Danish time, against Ukraine in Odense, with the result recorded as 2:1 for Denmark. The scorers for the home national team were Patrick Dorgu in the 13th minute and Joakim Mæhle in the 36th minute, while international agencies reported that after Eriksen's collapse there was no continuation of play in the usual rhythm. According to AP, after speaking with the staff and players of both teams, the referee decided that the match would not continue, which left the sporting result in the background.

The reaction on the pitch was quick and cautious. According to reports, Eriksen was soon conscious, and was then taken to Odense University Hospital for additional examinations. Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen said that Eriksen was in good spirits and that he was expected to leave the hospital soon, while in a later post the player himself said that he was already at home. According to AP, Boesen said that he spoke with Eriksen on Monday morning and that the player was with his family and in good spirits. It is also important that the cause of the new collapse has not been publicly explained in detail, so any assessment of a possible continuation of his career is premature for now. According to the available information, the priorities are medical checks, reading the data from the implanted device and assessment by specialists who monitor his condition.

Eriksen emphasizes the difference compared with 2021

In his message to the public, Eriksen sought to calm concerns, but also to make it clear that a serious health incident had occurred. According to his post, the shock that comes from the implanted device has a major impact on both him and his family, but he stressed that this episode differs from the events of 2021. At that time, during the match between Denmark and Finland at the European Championship, he suffered a cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated on the pitch of Parken Stadium in Copenhagen. This time, according to the Danish medical team and the player himself, the implanted device reacted as intended, meaning it recognized a dangerous rhythm disturbance and protected him at the moment when it was needed. Eriksen said that rehabilitation had already begun and that he wants to devote himself to his health, family, rest and everyday life away from football pressure.

Such wording is important because it distinguishes two events that seem similar at first glance, but medically do not necessarily have to follow the same course or have the same consequences. The cardiac arrest in 2021 was a life-threatening event because of which Eriksen received emergency treatment on the pitch, while afterwards he had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, known as an ICD, implanted. According to the British Heart Foundation, an ICD is a small electrical device implanted under the skin in the chest area and used to monitor and treat dangerously abnormal heart rhythms. When the device detects a rhythm that may endanger life, it can deliver an electrical impulse or shock to return the heart to a safer rhythm. In Eriksen's case, the Denmark national team doctor stated that, in his assessment, the device reacted as it should, but it has not been announced what exactly caused the moment in which the player grabbed his chest and fell.

A career marked by a comeback after cardiac arrest

Christian Eriksen, born on 14 February 1992 in Denmark, is one of the best-known Danish footballers of his generation and a long-time international. According to data from the Danish Football Association, he plays as a midfielder, is currently a member of VfL Wolfsburg, and has made more than 150 appearances for the Danish senior national team. In his career he has played for Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter, Brentford and Manchester United, and after leaving England he joined Wolfsburg, with whom, according to a club statement, he signed a contract until 2027. His return to professional football after 2021 was one of the most closely followed sports stories of recent years, because he returned to the highest level despite the implanted defibrillator. That is precisely why the new incident in Odense once again raises the question of workload, risks and medical protocols in elite sport, but answers to those questions can be given only by doctors who know his medical records.

After the cardiac arrest at Euro 2021, Eriksen could not continue his career in Italy's Serie A, because Italian rules prevented players with such an implanted device from playing. Because of this he left Inter, and rebuilt his career in England, first at Brentford, then at Manchester United. According to AP, he later moved to Wolfsburg, where he has a contract for the 2026/2027 season. The Danish association states in its database that Eriksen, as an international, was linked with Manchester United until 30 June 2025, and that his current club is VfL Wolfsburg. Such a path shows how specific his case is: this is a player who returned to professional football after an exceptionally serious medical event, but under constant medical supervision and with a device whose purpose is to reduce the risk of the most severe consequences of heart rhythm disorders.

Odense was supposed to be part of Denmark's summer programme

The match against Ukraine was part of the Danish national team's summer programme. The Danish Football Association announced back at the end of April that Denmark would play two test matches in June, against DR Congo and Ukraine, and that the meeting with Ukraine would be played in Odense. DBU then stated that Ukraine was the 32nd-ranked national team in the world and that the choice of opponent was part of head coach Brian Riemer's effort to test the team against opponents of the highest possible quality. In the same statement, the association also emphasized the humanitarian context of the match with Ukraine, stating that football can contribute to togetherness and bring something positive in the difficult circumstances that Ukraine is facing. But after Eriksen's fall, the planned sporting and symbolic framework of the match remained in the shadow of concern for the player's health.

According to DBU's data on the match itself, Denmark was led by Brian Riemer, and his assistant was Morten Wieghorst. Eriksen was also in the starting line-up and received a yellow card in the 31st minute, while the goals for Denmark were scored by Dorgu and Mæhle before the break. Those details remained secondary compared with what happened in the second half, because after the international's collapse the focus of the players, staff and fans shifted from the result to his health condition. The Danish players and members of the coaching staff once again found themselves in a situation which, in its emotional intensity, recalled Copenhagen in 2021. According to statements reported by the media, head coach Riemer described the event as an extremely shocking experience, while teammates said that the most important thing is that Eriksen is well.

What is known about the next steps

According to the information available as of 8 June 2026, Eriksen was at home with his family after hospital examinations and had begun his recovery. It has not been officially confirmed when he might return to training, whether he will continue with competitive obligations at all, or what the doctors' recommendations are after the new incident. In such cases, the decision on a return to sport does not depend only on the player's subjective feeling, but also on device readings, test results, the assessment of cardiologists and the rules of the competitions in which the player takes part. In his message, Eriksen emphasized that he is now focused on rehabilitation, family and normal activities with his children, thereby clearly indicating that the medical process takes precedence over football questions. According to AP, the Danish association stated that it remains in contact with the players and members of the staff, which shows that the consequences of such an event do not concern only one athlete, but also the entire team that witnessed it from close range.

This case once again reminds us how important a rapid response by medical services in sport is, but also how carefully one must speak about the health condition of public figures. An ICD can be crucial protection in certain rhythm disorders, but it does not remove the need for medical supervision, check-ups and individual risk assessments. For that reason, the most precise thing to say for now is that Eriksen is stable, that according to his own post he is at home, that his device reacted as it was supposed to and that further medical assessments will follow. Every decision about the football future of the Danish midfielder will depend on the findings and recommendations of specialists. Until then, the sporting public, the Danish national team and Wolfsburg will above all wait for confirmation that the recovery is continuing without new complications.
