Colombia concluded its warm-up in San Diego with a confident victory over Jordan

The Colombian national football team defeated Jordan 2:0 in an international friendly played on June 7, 2026, at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. The match was part of the final preparations ahead of the 2026 World Cup, and the result confirmed the difference in experience, individual quality and squad depth between the national team led by Néstor Lorenzo and Jamal Sellami’s Jordanian side. According to ESPN’s match summary, both goals were scored by Jhon Arias, who found the Jordan net in the 41st and 55th minutes. AS USA and Outlook India also reported that Arias decided the match with two goals, emphasizing that Colombia controlled the rhythm for most of the encounter and created the clearer chances.

The victory in California has special value for Colombia because it came in the final phase of the preparation cycle for the major competition in North America. The Colombian Football Federation had earlier announced that the match against Jordan was the final warm-up before the national team’s departure to the official camp in Guadalajara, where the squad will continue its final preparations for its appearance in Group K of the World Cup. Jordan, on the other hand, arrived in San Diego as a national team preparing for its first appearance on the world stage, so this encounter was a valuable test for the Asian side against an opponent with greater experience at the highest level.

Arias made the most of the match’s key moments

The match did not begin one-sidedly, although Colombia had already been the favorite beforehand. According to the live event coverage published by Outlook India, Jordan threatened in the early phase of the encounter through Mohannad Abu Taha, whose attempt ended on the frame of the goal. That detail showed that the Jordanian national team did not enter the match only with the intention of defending passively, but tried to make use of pace and forward runs. Still, as time went on, Colombia increasingly took possession, controlled the middle of the pitch and forced Jordan to defend deeper in its own half.

The key moment of the first half came near the end, when Jhon Arias gave Colombia the lead. ESPN recorded the goal in the 41st minute, while AS USA listed the 40th minute, which does not change the basic picture of the encounter: Colombia took the lead shortly before the break, in a period in which the pressure from Lorenzo’s team became more concrete. In that move, Arias showed timely arrival in the final phase and composure in finishing, and the goal allowed Colombia to enter the second half without scoreboard pressure. After conceding, Jordan had to open a little more space, which additionally suited the technically stronger and quicker Colombian team.

The second goal came at the beginning of the second half. According to ESPN, Arias scored again in the 55th minute and thereby practically directed the match toward the final 2:0. Outlook India reported that Colombia was “on top” of the match after the second goal, while Jordan found it increasingly difficult to get into situations from which it could seriously threaten the result. Arias’s two goals were the most visible part of Colombia’s victory, but the overall impression was also based on collective control of the rhythm, better positioning in midfield and the ability to preserve the lead without unnecessary risk.

Control of the game was more important than the impression of spectacle

Colombia did not need to play a high-tempo match from the first to the last minute in order to win. Such warm-up matches often have a different logic from competitive duels: coaches look for a balance between the result, testing individual solutions and avoiding injuries ahead of a tournament that starts in a few days. According to the match reports, Lorenzo used substitutions in the second half and distributed playing time, which is in line with the character of an encounter that served as the final test before departure for the last stage of preparations. Colombia, meanwhile, maintained its structure of play and did not allow changes in the lineup to disrupt the basic control of the encounter.

In the Colombian team, attention was again centered on the players expected to carry the main burden at the World Cup. In its announcement of the tournament squad, the Colombian federation stated that the team is led by head coach Néstor Lorenzo, and among those called up were prominent names such as James Rodríguez, Luis Díaz, Camilo Vargas, Jefferson Lerma and other important members of the national team. Although the friendly against Jordan cannot by itself be a final measure of form, a victory without conceding a goal provides additional stability ahead of entering the competitive part of the summer. In that sense, the result is just as important as the way Colombia limited the opponent after the early Jordanian attempts.

Jordan finished the match with one player fewer. ESPN noted a red card for Amer Jamous in the 90th minute in the match record, and Outlook India reported that Jamous was sent off in stoppage time after a harsh challenge on Jorge Carrascal. That incident did not significantly change the outcome, but it further complicated the closing stages for a team that was already behind and trying to find a way at least to reduce the deficit. For Jordan, the more important question in the post-match analysis will probably be how the team reacted to Colombian pressure and how much it managed to maintain organization when forced to defend against a technically superior opponent.

A friendly match as part of the “Countdown to ’26” program

The match between Colombia and Jordan was part of the “Countdown to ’26” series, a program of international friendlies in San Diego. San Diego FC stated in an official announcement that Snapdragon Stadium, Sports San Diego and Lions Sports & Media organized two matches during the weekend: Switzerland against Australia on June 6 and Colombia against Jordan on June 7. The same announcement stated that all four participating national teams were preparing for the global tournament being played this summer in the United States, Mexico and Canada. For San Diego, that weekend was also a way to further strengthen its status as a football center at a time when the attention of the global public is focused on the final preparations of national teams.

The Colombian Football Federation had earlier confirmed that the match with Jordan was planned as the final test before the start of the World Cup. The FCF announcement states that the encounter would be played at Snapdragon Stadium and that Colombia was then scheduled to move to its official camp in Guadalajara. The federation also quoted president Ramón Jesurun, who emphasized that this match closes the cycle of preparatory encounters before the first appearance at the tournament against Uzbekistan. Such context explains why Lorenzo was looking for a victory in San Diego, but also why it was equally important to distribute the workload among the players.

Snapdragon Stadium, located in San Diego in the state of California, has in recent years become increasingly present in the international football calendar. It hosts matches that combine sporting and promotional significance, especially ahead of a tournament being held in North America. In this case, the stadium served as a neutral stage for national teams from South America and Asia, giving the match a broader international character than a usual preparatory test. For Colombia, it was also an adaptation to conditions in the region, while for Jordan the duel was part of the process of facing the level of intensity that awaits it at the World Cup.

Colombia seeks stability before Group K

According to the schedule published by FIFA, Colombia will compete at the 2026 World Cup in Group K, and its first match will be played on June 17 against Uzbekistan in Mexico City. After that comes the match against DR Congo on June 23 in Guadalajara, while the final group duel is scheduled for June 27 against Portugal in Miami. The Colombian federation, in its own announcement of the national-team squad, also listed that schedule, along with information that the team will travel to Guadalajara on June 10 to complete preparations there. The victory against Jordan can therefore be viewed as the final competitive signal before entering a group in which Colombia will have to confirm the status of one of the national teams with ambitions to advance.

Colombia is returning to the world stage after not appearing at the 2022 World Cup. In its overview of the road to the 2026 tournament, the FCF stated that the national team finished the South American qualifiers in third place and thereby secured its seventh appearance at World Cups. That fact increases the importance of the current tournament for a generation that combines experience with players in their prime years. During the cycle, Lorenzo built a team that relies on technique, speed in transition and attacking variety, and the match against Jordan showed that Colombia can reach victory even when it is not an open contest with a large number of chances.

Two-goal scorer Jhon Arias benefited especially from this encounter because he sent a message about his form at the right moment. In national teams with several offensive options, final warm-up matches often decide the hierarchy of minutes, and two goals immediately before the tournament can carry weight beyond the result itself. Still, Colombia will not build its ambitions only on individual inspiration. For the matches against Uzbekistan, DR Congo and Portugal, it will be decisive whether the team can maintain compactness, avoid lapses in concentration and make use of the experience of players who have already gone through major tournaments.

Jordan learns through the toughest tests before a historic appearance

For Jordan, the match in San Diego carried a different kind of weight. The Asian Football Confederation announced that Jordan will appear at the World Cup for the first time in 2026, and that historic qualification was confirmed in June 2025 after a 3:0 victory against Oman in the Asian qualifiers. The AFC then stated that Ali Olwan scored a hat-trick, while South Korea’s later result against Iraq confirmed Jordan’s place at the final tournament. Jamal Sellami’s team therefore seeks, in every preparatory match, experience that can help it adapt as well as possible to the rhythm of a competition in which it will face global opposition for the first time.

According to the AFC’s team profile, Jordan opens the World Cup in Group J on June 16 against Austria in Santa Clara, then plays against Algeria, and finishes the group against the reigning world champion Argentina in Dallas. Such a schedule leaves little room for gradual adaptation, so the encounter against Colombia was useful precisely because it brought a high level of technical and tactical demand. Although a 0:2 defeat does not look dramatic, the match showed areas in which Jordan must be firmer, especially during periods when the opponent raises the pressure and forces the defense into longer spells without the ball.

Jordan has players capable of quick forward transitions, and in its World Cup squad preview the AFC particularly highlighted Musa Al Taamari and Ali Olwan as important carriers of the attacking game. Against Colombia, signs of danger were visible in the early phase, but the continuity of threat did not last. That is a common challenge for national teams that, at major tournaments, face higher-ranked sides for the first time: the initial energy must be turned into a long-term game plan, and the defense must remain organized even after conceding a goal. Sellami will be able to draw clear conclusions from this match about how long his team can withstand pressure without losing discipline.

What the victory means ahead of the start of the tournament

Colombia’s 2:0 victory does not bring points, but it brings what national teams at this stage of preparation find almost equally important: calm, confirmation of basic ideas and the impression that key players are entering the final stretch with a clear role. According to the available reports, Colombia had more control, made better use of its chances and closed the match without conceding a goal. That is especially important for a team that will have different types of opponents in Group K, from debutant Uzbekistan to Portugal, a national team with great individual quality. In such an environment, the ability to close out a match after gaining an advantage can be just as decisive as attacking explosiveness itself.

For Jordan, the defeat does not have to be an exclusively negative signal. A national team preparing for its first appearance at the World Cup received a realistic picture of the demands that await it against strong opponents. According to the AFC, Jordan’s story is already historic by virtue of qualification itself, but ambition at the tournament will not stop at the symbolism of participation. The match against Colombia showed that the team has moments in which it can threaten, but also that in Group J it will have to raise its level of concentration, especially in the closing stages of halves and after lost duels in midfield.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first edition with 48 national teams and 104 matches, according to the official schedule published by FIFA. Such a format opens space for a larger number of national teams, but at the same time increases the importance of every group match, because alongside the two best teams from each group, the best third-placed selections also qualify for the knockout phase. Colombia will seek, in such a system, confirmation of its status and a return among serious contenders in the latter stages, while Jordan will try to make use of the opportunity it earned through a historic qualifying success. After the match in San Diego, both national teams have a clearer picture of what awaits them: Colombia with a victory and an in-form Arias, Jordan with a defeat that can serve as a useful preparatory lesson.
