Corey Heim surprised NASCAR in San Diego and claimed his first Cup Series victory
Corey Heim achieved the biggest result of his career so far by winning the Anduril 250 race on June 21, 2026, at the Qualcomm Circuit at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego. According to NASCAR’s official report, the 23-year-old 23XI Racing driver triumphed in only his 13th Cup Series start, NASCAR’s top category, after a direct battle with teammate Tyler Reddick in the closing laps. The race was historic because of the location itself: NASCAR presented the San Diego weekend as the first major appearance of its national series at an active military installation, and the Cup race was the central event of the program held from June 19 to 21. Heim’s victory was confirmed after the post-race technical inspection, NASCAR states, making the surprise on the temporary street circuit an official result.
The victory came at a time when Heim had already been marked as one of Toyota’s and 23XI Racing’s most important development drivers. On May 30, 2026, the team announced that Heim would drive full-time in the Cup Series from the 2027 season, in the No. 35 Toyota Camry XSE. That gave the San Diego appearance additional weight: instead of merely confirming potential for the future, Heim already showed in a limited program that he can win in the highest category. According to NASCAR’s results, he led only the final three laps, but precisely those three laps were enough for one of the most impressive finishes of the season.
The decisive moment came on lap 73
The key moment of the race occurred on lap 73 of 75. NASCAR states that Reddick, who was then fighting for the victory, slid in Turn 2 and opened space for Heim. The two 23XI Racing drivers then battled wheel-to-wheel through Turns 3 and 4, while Reddick tried to regain the position entering Turn 5. There was also contact in that duel, and Reddick then lost rhythm and later suffered a problem with the left-front tire. Instead of a duel all the way to the finish line, the closing stage turned into Heim’s controlled drive toward his first victory.
Reddick finished the race in 25th place, although he led nine laps and was one of the main candidates for victory. According to NASCAR’s official report, after the race he admitted that he had overdone his attempt to regain the position and congratulated Heim, noting that he did not want to win the race by improperly taking advantage of contact with a teammate. That detail further emphasized how delicate the finish was for 23XI Racing: the team simultaneously gained a historic victory by a young driver, but lost a better points result for Reddick, who retained the standings lead, reduced to eight points ahead of Denny Hamlin. Reddick’s statement about problems with rear-tire wear during the weekend indicates that San Diego was demanding both for driving precision and tire management.
The first one-two result for 23XI Racing
Heim crossed the finish line 10.365 seconds ahead of Bubba Wallace, giving 23XI Racing the first one-two triumph in the organization’s history. According to NASCAR, Wallace reached second place after a particularly difficult outcome in his own race, because earlier he had to make up a two-lap penalty connected with a lost wheel. Kyle Larson took third place, while Zane Smith and AJ Allmendinger completed the top five. Chris Buescher, Ross Chastain, Riley Herbst, Ryan Blaney and Michael McDowell also placed in the top ten, showing how much the final order departed from the expectations created after qualifying and the early part of the race.
For 23XI Racing, the result has multiple meanings. The team founded by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin has gradually expanded its sporting ambitions in recent seasons, and Reddick and Wallace have already brought it visible results in the Cup Series. In San Diego, the victory came from a driver who is still in the transitional phase between a development role and a full Cup career. Given that 23XI Racing officially announced Heim’s entry into the permanent lineup for 2027, his triumph in San Diego further strengthens the team’s decision to position him long-term as one of the key figures of the project.
The race itself also brought important points consequences for the top of the standings. According to NASCAR, Reddick remained the series leader after San Diego, but his advantage over Hamlin was reduced to eight points. Hamlin finished 14th, which was not enough for a dramatic turnaround in the standings, but it further tightened the top ahead of the continuation of the season. Heim’s status in the points context differs from the status of permanent Cup contenders, but the sporting impact of a victory over the championship leader and more experienced members of the grid carries weight that goes beyond the table itself.
Qualcomm Circuit delivered the expected chaos and unpredictability
The track in San Diego was one of the main reasons why the race had so many unknowns. According to announcements by NASCAR and the organizer NASCAR San Diego, Qualcomm Circuit is a temporary road course 3.4 miles long, or approximately 5.47 kilometers, with 16 turns. It was built on the area of Naval Base Coronado and Naval Air Station North Island, and the organizers presented it as NASCAR’s first racing facility constructed on an active military base. The track layout includes fast sections, sharp turns and parts that pass alongside recognizable military locations, leaving the drivers little room for error.
NASCAR San Diego stated that certain parts of the track are symbolically connected with the history of the United States Navy. The start-finish straight is named in honor of Commander Theodore Ellyson, the first American naval aviator, while Turn 5, Carrier Corner, is located between aircraft carrier berthing locations. The organizers also highlighted the Coronado Chicane and Runway Road, a turn beside the area of Halsey Field’s runway. Such scenery made the race visually different from classic NASCAR events on ovals, but at the same time imposed on drivers the typical challenges of street-road courses: narrow braking zones, concrete barriers and limited opportunities to correct mistakes.
The historical context of the weekend was also an important part of the event. NASCAR had earlier announced that the San Diego race was being held as part of the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy, and the weekend included appearances by all three national NASCAR series. The Craftsman Truck Series opened the program on June 19, the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series competed on June 20, and the Cup Series ran the main race on June 21. According to NASCAR, San Diego thereby became only the second modern NASCAR location with a street race after Chicago, but with its military setting and temporary infrastructure it had an entirely different identity.
A major crash changed the direction of the race
Although the finish was marked by the battle between Heim and Reddick, the middle part of the race was equally important for the final outcome. NASCAR states that after the restart on lap 32, a major incident occurred in Turn 1, in which some of the most prominent contenders were affected. Connor Zilisch, Austin Hill and pole-position winner Shane van Gisbergen were caught in the incident that ended their chances of a high finish. Zilisch led eight laps before retiring and thus recorded his first laps led in the Cup Series, while van Gisbergen, one of the strongest road-course specialists in NASCAR, finished in 38th place.
That crash significantly changed the dynamics of the race. Van Gisbergen started from first position and was expected to be among the most dangerous drivers on the new street circuit, but his retirement opened space for a different strategic outcome. Ty Gibbs also suffered significant damage in the incident, but managed to continue and finish 15th. NASCAR announced that the race had seven cautions over a total of 11 of the 75 laps, with 20 lead changes among 13 drivers. Ryan Blaney led the most, 12 laps, Larson led 11, Reddick nine, and Heim, despite only three laps at the front, led when it mattered most.
The stage portion of the race further confirmed the unpredictable character of the new event. According to NASCAR, Blaney won the first stage under yellow, while Ryan Preece took the second stage after passing Riley Herbst near the end of the segment. Such a distribution of rewards and positions shows that the race did not have one stable dominator. Teams had to adapt to changes in pace, tires, cautions and track position, while decisions about pit stops and tire choice were just as important as speed over one lap.
Heim’s victory came before his full Cup career
Heim’s career already had a strong upward trajectory before San Diego. According to 23XI Racing’s official announcement, he is the team’s development driver, the reigning 2025 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion and a driver with a total of 25 Truck Series victories since 2022. The team stated that in 2026 it had planned 12 of his Cup starts in the No. 67 car, before moving into the permanent lineup the following season. San Diego, however, showed that an adjustment period does not have to mean waiting for the first major results.
According to the same 23XI Racing announcement, Heim will drive the No. 35 car from 2027 and join the permanent Cup lineup that includes Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace. In the context of team strategy, that means 23XI continues to build a broader structure with three competitively relevant cars. Denny Hamlin, one of the team’s co-owners, described Heim in the announcement as an exceptionally talented driver who continues to improve with every appearance, and Toyota Racing Development also emphasized that Heim had progressed through a long-term development process. The victory in San Diego gave those assessments immediate confirmation on the track.
For the young driver, it is especially important that the first victory came on a road-street layout, and not in the format that brought him most of his earlier successes. NASCAR states that it was also his first Cup victory on a road or street course. In a series in which young drivers are often judged by their ability to adapt to different types of tracks, a triumph at a completely new location has additional value. Heim did not win by dominantly leading the race from start to finish, but by reading the closing stage, showing patience behind Reddick and taking advantage of the moment when the only real opportunity opened.
San Diego got a race with a story that goes beyond the result
The Anduril 250 in San Diego will not be remembered only by the winner’s name. The race combined several important narratives: the first NASCAR weekend on an active military base, the return of a strong event to Southern California, a new temporary track and the first Cup victory of a driver who is only entering the most important phase of his career. According to NASCAR, the post-race inspection found no irregularities, so Heim’s victory was officially confirmed. Thus, the finish against Reddick, the tire problem and 23XI’s one-two result gained a permanent place in the statistics of the 2026 season.
For Reddick, the next step is the need to turn the lost opportunity into stability in the continuation of the championship, especially because his points advantage has decreased. For 23XI Racing, however, San Diego brings an exceptionally strong sporting message: the team simultaneously had the winner, the runner-up and the championship leader, although Reddick finished far below expectations. For Heim, the victory is the clearest proof that the announcement of a permanent Cup commitment is not only an investment in the future, but also a decision that is already changing the balance of power within NASCAR’s highest class.
