Dillon Brooks wants a boxing showdown with Jimmy Butler: playoff rivalry is still alive
PHOENIX – Phoenix Suns basketball player Dillon Brooks has once again revisited his tense relationship with Golden State Warriors star Jimmy Butler, saying that Butler would be his choice for a boxing opponent among active NBA players. The statement came during a conversation with streamer and YouTuber N3on, who asked him which basketball player he would like to fight if he could choose. After briefly considering the question, Brooks named Butler and explained that their animosity stems from basketball clashes, but also from his impression that certain moments went too far.
Brooks did not present a concrete plan or announce that negotiations for an actual boxing match were underway. His answer was part of an informal conversation, and there has so far been no confirmation from organizers, clubs or the players themselves that such an event could take place. Nevertheless, his choice of Butler was not accidental. Their relationship was marked by verbal confrontations, physically tough play and public statements during the first round of the 2025 playoffs, when Brooks played for the Houston Rockets and Butler for the Golden State Warriors. It was precisely that series that transformed an ordinary sporting rivalry into one of the more notable personal duels of that season's NBA playoffs.
According to footage of the conversation published by N3on, Brooks emphasized that the conflict is primarily related to basketball. He added, however, that he believes some things crossed the line and that he still feels tension when he thinks about Butler. He does not necessarily view such an atmosphere only as a problem: he explained that animosity toward an opponent can serve as additional motivation and help him play with greater intensity. In doing so, he remained faithful to his public image as a player who does not shy away from confrontation and who often builds his energy through direct duels with the opposing team's best players.
Why Brooks chose Butler in particular
Brooks' answer only makes full sense in the context of the series between Houston and Golden State in April and May 2025. Houston entered the playoffs as the second seed in the Western Conference, while the Warriors reached the seventh position through the play-in tournament. Despite the difference in their starting positions, Golden State took a 3-1 lead, and Game 4 of the series, played on April 28, 2025, in San Francisco, became the focal point of the conflict between Butler and Brooks. The Warriors won 109-106, while Butler, despite an injury and uncertainty surrounding his availability, finished the game with 27 points, six assists and five rebounds.
The two players exchanged words several times during the game. Television cameras captured their tense communication, and one of the most striking moments was Butler's hard foul that stopped Brooks on a drive. According to SFGATE's report, the foul was forceful, but the officials assessed it as a regular basketball play and did not subject it to an additional review. The conflict was not limited to physical play. After the game, Butler directly confirmed that Brooks' comments had given him additional motivation and that he did not view their relationship as a friendly competition.
At the press conference, Butler said at the time that he did not like Brooks, while noting that he considered both of them extremely combative competitors. He said there was no fun in their exchange and that enjoyment in the playoffs came down to winning and securing the fourth victory needed to advance. The statement was unusually direct even for the NBA environment, where provocations and verbal duels are common. Butler did not try to soften the message or portray their conflict as a show for the audience, so that moment remained one of the most frequently quoted features of the series.
Golden State ultimately did not close out the matchup in five or six games. Houston responded with two consecutive victories and forced a decisive Game 7, but the Warriors won 103-89 in Houston on May 4, 2025, advancing with a 4-3 series victory. Changing teams did not erase the old rivalry
Brooks was one of Houston's key defensive players during those playoffs. A few months later, he changed teams in a major transaction that significantly reshaped the rosters of several NBA clubs. The Phoenix Suns announced on July 6, 2025, that they had acquired Brooks, Jalen Green, the draft rights to Khaman Maluach, Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea, as well as a 2026 second-round draft pick, in a seven-team trade. Kevin Durant went in the opposite direction and became a Houston player.
That trade meant that Brooks was no longer Butler's direct divisional or playoff rival in a Rockets jersey, but both players remained in the Western Conference. According to the current rosters on the NBA clubs' official websites, Brooks is a member of the Phoenix Suns, while Butler plays for the Golden State Warriors. Their clubs therefore continue to meet during the regular season, and another playoff matchup is also possible. Every future meeting could attract additional attention precisely because of the publicly confirmed animosity between the two veterans.
For Phoenix, Brooks provides value that goes beyond the number of points he scores. His game is based on defensive pressure, physical toughness and a willingness to take on the difficult task of guarding the opposing team's primary playmaker. Such an approach often gives his team energy, but it also places him at the center of discussions about technical fouls, provocations and the boundary between competitive aggression and unnecessary conflict. In February 2026, the NBA suspended Brooks for one game after he received his 16th technical foul of the regular season, which, under league rules, automatically results in an unpaid suspension.
That fact does not prove that his clashes with Butler are different from other tense matchups in his career, but it demonstrates how integral his confrontational style is to Brooks' basketball identity. His willingness to verbally challenge an opponent can sometimes disrupt the opposing player's concentration, but it can also produce the opposite effect. In Game 4 of the 2025 series, Butler openly said that Brooks' behavior had motivated him, and he then played a crucial role in the Warriors' victory. The absence of a response from Butler is also consistent with the fact that the original episode of their conflict arose within a competitive context. Butler's statements in 2025 were focused on the series against Houston, the result and advancement to the next round, rather than on a fight outside the basketball court. Brooks now claims that part of their animosity remains, but it is not yet clear whether Butler shares the same impression more than a year later. Until the other side responds directly, the public has only Brooks' interpretation of their relationship.
That one-sidedness is important for understanding the entire story. The headline idea of a boxing match attracts attention, but the available facts do not indicate that the conflict has developed into a concrete project. Rivalry as fuel, but also a potential risk

Both clubs enter the new season with their own competitive objectives, and any future meeting between the Phoenix and Golden State rosters will provide a more natural setting for the continuation of the rivalry than any unofficial confrontation outside an NBA court.
Brooks, however, made it clear with his answer that he has not distanced himself from the events of spring 2025. He named Butler without hesitation after briefly considering the question and described the animosity as something he can still feel and turn into motivation. While Butler remains silent, the story stays at the level of a single provocative statement and a reminder of a turbulent series that ended with a Warriors victory in seven games. The next official basketball matchup between the two players could therefore provide a more convincing answer to the question of how alive the old rivalry truly remains.
