Dinamo close to signing Sota Nakamura: Japan international leaves Hiroshima training camp
According to information published on July 16, 2026, Dinamo are close to reaching an agreement for the arrival of 23-year-old Japanese attacker Sota Nakamura from Sanfrecce Hiroshima. The Zagreb club have not yet officially confirmed the transfer, while Sanfrecce have also not disclosed the name of the club where Nakamura is expected to continue his career. Nevertheless, several important elements match: Croatian media report that the player should arrive in Zagreb in the coming days, while Japanese sources have stated that he left his team's training camp due to final activities related to a move abroad. According to a report by 24sata, Dinamo had been working on signing the Japanese winger for some time, with Nakamura's name emerging only in the final stage of negotiations. Until all formal steps are completed and an official announcement is made, the deal should still be regarded as highly likely, but not finalized.
Nakamura would provide Dinamo with an attacking profile that could be useful to the coaching staff in various tactical systems. He can play on either wing, behind the central striker and as the leading forward, meaning that he is not merely another player for a single position, but an option capable of changing roles during a match. His most prominent characteristics are acceleration, directness, attacking space and the ability to finish moves after cutting inside from the flank. When he arrived from university football, Sanfrecce described him as a forward who combines goalscoring with chance creation, while official J.League data confirm that he adapted to the professional level in a short period. In a Dinamo squad that already includes several established and young attacking players, such versatility could increase competition and make it easier to distribute playing time across domestic and European matches.
Left the training camp in Austria to prepare for an overseas transfer
The most concrete confirmation that Nakamura's status had changed came from Japan. FNN Prime Online and local television station Television Shin Hiroshima reported that the player had left the team to prepare for a transfer to an overseas club. RCC additionally reported that he had been with the squad at their training camp in Austria, had participated in the initial phase of the camp and played in the first friendly match, after which he was omitted from training and separated from the team. At that point, Sanfrecce had not disclosed the destination, the transfer fee or the length of a possible contract. Therefore, what has currently been confirmed is his departure from the Japanese club's regular programme for the purpose of an overseas transfer, while the connection with Dinamo stems from Croatian media reports and the matching timeline of events.
Such a development usually means that negotiations are at an advanced stage, but it does not guarantee that the transfer has been completed. Before an official presentation, all contractual details generally need to be agreed upon, a medical examination must be completed and the registration procedure between the clubs and national associations must be carried out. According to the available information, Nakamura is expected to travel to Zagreb in the coming days, although the exact date has not been publicly confirmed. As of July 16, Dinamo had not yet included the Japanese footballer in the squad listed on their official website for the 2026/27 season, while the official J.League website still lists him as a Sanfrecce Hiroshima player. These facts do not contradict the media reports, but indicate that the formal announcement had not yet been made at the time of writing.
The timing of his potential arrival is particularly important because of Dinamo's European schedule. The club will play their first official matches of the new season against Swiss champions Thun in the second qualifying round of the Champions League. The first leg is scheduled for July 21 in Switzerland, with the return leg taking place on July 28 in Zagreb, both starting at 8 p.m. Under UEFA regulations, the standard deadline for submitting List A for the second qualifying round expires on July 16 at 11:59 p.m. Central European Time, but after that deadline clubs may register a maximum of two new players until 11:59 p.m. on the day before the first match, provided that the prescribed conditions are met. This means that, if the transfer is completed quickly and Dinamo decide to use that option, Nakamura could theoretically be registered for the first European fixture. However, the club have not announced any plan regarding his registration, and it is not known what condition he would be in after travelling and changing environments.
Rapid rise from university football to the Japan national team
Sota Nakamura was born on October 15, 2002, in Takasaki, in Japan's Gunma Prefecture. He is 168 centimetres tall, weighs 64 kilograms and is predominantly right-footed. He developed as a footballer at Maebashi FC and the renowned Maebashi Ikuei High School, before playing for Meiji University. In Japanese university football, he established a reputation as one of the most productive attackers of his generation. When confirming his arrival, Sanfrecce highlighted that in 2023 he had been both the leading goalscorer and the top assist provider in the first division of the Kanto University Football League. In the same year, he won the national university championship with Meiji and received the tournament's Most Valuable Player award.
He joined Sanfrecce Hiroshima at the beginning of 2025 and was almost immediately given a significant role. According to the club's official data, he played 32 J1 League matches and scored six goals during the 2025 league season. He added five appearances and one goal in the League Cup, as well as five matches and two goals in the Emperor's Cup. Overall, in his first professional season he demonstrated that his performances in university football were not merely a consequence of a lower level of competition. At the end of December 2025, Sanfrecce renewed his contract for the transitional J1 100 Year Vision League competition, which was a clear indication that the club regarded him as an important part of their future team.
Japanese football is undergoing a calendar change in 2026, as the J.League will move from the 2026/27 season to a system beginning approximately in early August and ending in late May, with a winter break. During the transitional period, a special competition called the 100 Year Vision League was held, and Nakamura continued to progress in that tournament. Official J.League statistics record five goals and one assist, with an average of 1.3 shots per match and a conversion rate of 23.8 percent. He scored three goals with his right foot and two with his left, demonstrating that his finishing does not rely exclusively on his dominant side. RCC reported that during the closing stages of the competition, including the play-offs, he scored in four consecutive matches, further attracting the attention of clubs outside Japan.
His breakthrough at international level came in July 2025 at the East Asian Championship. The Japan Football Association confirms that on July 8, against Hong Kong, he came on at the beginning of the second half and scored in stoppage time to complete a 6-1 victory. Four days later, he was given several more minutes against China in a match Japan won 2-0. He therefore recorded two appearances and one goal during his first senior national-team call-up. Although those appearances do not mean that he has secured a permanent place among Japan's leading internationals, the call-up and debut goal are important indicators of the speed of his development, particularly because he had started his professional career only a few months earlier.
What Nakamura could bring to Dinamo's attack
Dinamo already have several different attacking profiles in their current squad. The official list for the 2026/27 season includes Dion Drena Beljo, Arbër Hoxha, Mateo Lisica, Cardoso Varela, Fran Topić, Juan Córdoba, Mounsef Bakrar and Mislav Oršić among the attacking players, while Luka Stojković and Gabriel Vidović can also operate closer to the opposition's goal. Nakamura's arrival would therefore not necessarily mean that he would immediately take over a predetermined place in the starting line-up. His value primarily lies in the fact that he can cover several areas and offer a different type of movement from that of a traditional central striker. In matches in which Dinamo dominate possession, he could attack the space between the full-back and centre-back, while in games involving more transitions, his speed could become a tool for breaking forward after winning the ball.
His statistical profile also indicates a player who does not remain permanently inside the penalty area. According to J.League data, during the transitional competition he averaged 2.8 crosses and 1.3 chances created per match, fitting the description of an attacker who can begin a move in a wide position and finish it in the central zone. At the same time, his height and modest percentage of aerial duels won show that he should not be viewed as a striker suited to long-ball football and constant battles with centre-backs. He could offer the most to a team that creates space for him to change direction, combine along the ground and make runs behind the defence. His adaptation to European football will depend on his intensity without the ball, his ability to cope against physically stronger defences and the speed with which he absorbs tactical requirements.
Additional depth in attack could be important for Dinamo from the very beginning of the season, when Champions League qualifiers are played at short intervals and there is little time for tactical preparation. However, even if the transfer is completed before the matches against Thun, it would be unrealistic to expect a player arriving from a different footballing and cultural environment to immediately take on a key role. One advantage is that he had been in full training with Sanfrecce until mid-July, as the Japanese side were preparing for the start of the new season in early August. On the other hand, travel, administrative procedures and the process of getting to know his teammates reduce the time available for tactical preparation. The coaching staff would therefore have to assess whether he can quickly be included at least as an option from the bench or whether a more gradual integration would be more beneficial.
Dinamo sporting director's connection with Japan
The potential transfer also has an interesting institutional connection. Dinamo sporting director Dario Dabac has been part of the club's scouting structure since the end of 2023 and was appointed to his current position in April 2025. During his playing career, he also played in Japan, specifically for Sanfrecce Hiroshima. That experience in itself is not evidence that it determined the negotiations, but it could facilitate an understanding of the Japanese market, communication with the club and an assessment of how the player might adapt to a European environment. In their reports about Nakamura's possible departure, Japanese media also highlighted Dabac's connection with Hiroshima and his previous monitoring of the local market.
Dinamo already have experience with Japanese footballers. Takuro Kaneko played in Zagreb on loan from Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo, while Takuya Ogiwara arrived from Urawa Red Diamonds. Their spells showed that the Croatian champions actively monitor the J.League, but also that every arrival from Japan involves a separate adaptation process. Nakamura would arrive at a younger age and with less professional experience than some of his predecessors, but also with clear development potential. For a club that traditionally seeks to combine immediate results with increasing players' market value, such a profile can be attractive, provided that the transfer fee and contractual conditions are assessed as sustainable.
At this point, the financial details have not been officially disclosed. Sanfrecce renewed Nakamura's contract at the end of 2025, so there is no basis for assuming that he could leave without a fee, but no credible official source has published the agreed amount. Market-value estimates from commercial football websites should not be equated with the actual transfer fee, because the final price depends on the length of the contract, interest from other clubs, bonuses and a percentage of a future sale. Likewise, it is not currently known whether Dinamo are discussing a permanent transfer or another arrangement, although media reports point towards a move that would make him a new player of the Zagreb club. Only an official statement from the parties involved can confirm those details.
The deal is close, but an official announcement remains crucial
All available information creates a convincing picture of a transfer that is in its final stage. Croatian sources identify Dinamo as his next club, Japanese media confirm that Nakamura left the training camp because of a move abroad, and the player's profile fits the need for a fast and versatile attacker. Nevertheless, caution is required until an official announcement is made. Even after an agreement in principle, obstacles related to the medical examination, documentation or final contractual provisions can arise in transfers. The most accurate description is therefore that Dinamo are close to signing Sota Nakamura, rather than that the deal has already been formally completed.
Should the transfer be confirmed, Dinamo will acquire a player who, in less than two years, progressed from a university star to a regular member of one of Japan's strongest clubs and a senior international debutant. For Nakamura, Zagreb would represent his first spell outside Japan and his first direct experience of European club football. For Dinamo, it would be a continuation of the expansion of their scouting reach towards a market where technical quality, discipline and the rapid development of players have attracted an increasing number of European clubs in recent years. The next move is now expected from the clubs: an official confirmation should clarify the transfer status, the type of contract, the financial terms and the possibility of registering the Japanese attacker for the first European matches of the season.
