Doha completes preparations for Gulf Games 2026: regional games opened by mascot Washeq

Doha is entering the final phase of preparations for the fourth edition of the Gulf Games, a regional multisport competition that will be held in Qatar from May 11 to 22, 2026. The Organizing Committee announced that the key logistical, technical and administrative tasks have been completed, and the final confirmation of readiness was presented at a press conference held on May 3 in Al Wajba Hall, at the headquarters of the Qatar Olympic Committee. On that occasion, the official mascot of the competition, Washeq, was presented to the public for the first time, inspired by the desert caracal, an animal associated with the natural environment of the Arabian Peninsula. The organizers present the mascot as a visual symbol of speed, precision, adaptability and calmness, but also as a communication tool intended to bring the competition closer to younger audiences and the wider sports community. Gulf Games Doha 2026 are being held under the slogan One Gulf, One Heart, and the host positions them as a sporting event that, along with medals and results, should emphasize cooperation among the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

The competition brings together more than a thousand athletes from GCC countries

According to data published by the organizers and the Qatar News Agency, more than 1,074 female and male athletes from the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council are expected at the fourth edition of the games. This is a regional framework that brings together Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and the games are conceived as a platform for competition, connecting sports federations and strengthening the continuity of joint sports programs. The program includes a wide range of disciplines, from athletics and swimming to combat sports, team competitions and disciplines that have gained increasing popularity in the region in recent years, such as padel. The organizers state that the competitions will be held at several sports venues in Qatar, including Aspire Dome, Hamad Aquatic Centre, Qatar Sports Club, Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, Lusail Shooting Range and other infrastructure used for major international competitions. In this way, Gulf Games Doha 2026 continue Qatar's strategy of using already developed sports infrastructure for regional and international events.

Washeq as a symbol of the desert, discipline and shared identity

The central moment of the press conference was the presentation of the mascot Washeq. Maryam Al Mansoori, Head of Marketing and Sponsorship at the Organizing Committee, explained that the mascot's character was inspired by the desert caracal, an animal described in the organizers' communication as part of the natural heritage of the Arabian Peninsula. Washeq was designed as a recognizable visual element of the games, but its role is not only decorative. The organizers associate it with the values of fair competition, discipline, participation and togetherness, emphasizing that the mascot should help create an emotional connection between the audience, the athletes and the event itself. In the sports marketing of major competitions, mascots often serve as the most visible part of an event's identity, especially among younger spectators, and Doha 2026 uses that tool in combination with messages about the environment, regional belonging and sporting character. Washeq was therefore presented as a character that connects a local natural motif with the ambition for the Gulf Games to gain a clearer and more contemporary public profile.

Organizers highlight completed preparations and a multi-phase marketing campaign

Sheikh Abdullah bin Saud Al Thani, Chairman of the Doha 2026 Marketing and Communications Committee, said at the conference that hosting the games is a continuation of sporting connections among GCC states. According to him, this edition should serve as a platform for strengthening ties among young people in the region, promoting sporting values and confirming the role of sport as a space for communication among peoples. The Organizing Committee announced a multi-phase marketing campaign intended to increase public interest, encourage spectators to attend and present the event as a regionally relevant sports project. In this context, particular emphasis is placed on the fact that the preparations covered not only the sporting part of the competition but also the identity of the games, sponsorship platforms, fan activities and media visibility. The opening of the games has been announced for May 11 at Al Shaqab, and the organizers expect the ceremony to serve as a public display of the level of preparedness and a symbolic beginning of the competition program.

Sponsors and strategic partners as part of the organizational model

The Organizing Committee also announced the list of official sponsors and strategic partners supporting the fourth edition of the Gulf Games. Among the listed partners are Hamad International Airport, Msheireb Properties, Al Kass Channel, Suhail Industrial Holding Group, Kotinos, Bornan, Al Rayyan Water, Dynamic Sports, Al Jazeera Perfumes and The Look Company. The role of the partners was presented as important for the operational implementation, public visibility and marketing value of the event. Sports competitions of this type generally depend on a combination of institutional organization, logistical infrastructure and commercial partnerships, and Doha 2026, in its communication, particularly emphasizes precisely the connection between public sporting interest and sponsorship support. The partners are not presented only as financial support, but also as participants in creating the experience for spectators, media, athletes and visiting delegations. Such an approach follows a broader trend in the organization of major sporting events, in which the sports program is complemented by fan zones, cultural content, digital activations and branded public spaces.

The program includes team, individual and combat sports

Available data about the program indicate competition in a number of sports and disciplines, including athletics, swimming, 3x3 and 5x5 basketball, volleyball, handball, boxing, fencing, karate, taekwondo, shooting, equestrian sports, squash, table tennis, billiards and snooker, padel, wrestling and other disciplines listed in official and organizational announcements. Some sources mention 18 sports disciplines, while the Qatar News Agency and several media reports list 19 sports; according to the available information, the difference stems from the way disciplines and competition formats are counted. The organizers also previously held a virtual draw for team sports, which is part of the technical schedule needed to confirm groups, match schedules and the organization of delegations. For athletes from the region, the games have a double importance: they represent an independent regional competition, but also an opportunity to test form ahead of other international appearances. It has been particularly emphasized that the Qatari delegation will number more than 300 female and male athletes, with administrative, accommodation and transport preparations completed.

The games logo is based on the motif of the palm tree and six member states

The visual identity of Doha 2026 began to be built even before the mascot was presented. The official logo of the fourth edition of the Gulf Games was presented in December 2025 at the Old Doha Port, and according to the explanation by Qatar's Ministry of Sports and Youth, it was inspired by the palm tree as one of the most recognizable symbols of the environment and heritage of the Gulf. The logo consists of six palm branches representing the six GCC member states, while the negative space in the middle forms the number 4, directly referring to the fourth edition of the games. The organizers then highlighted the values of resilience, endurance, generosity, patience and connection with the land, which are presented in the event's communication as a shared cultural framework. The act of presenting the logo itself was carried out through an interactive mural in which representatives of the organization and the public participated, with the aim of emphasizing togetherness and teamwork. In combination with the mascot Washeq, the logo forms a visual system through which Doha 2026 seeks to connect a contemporary sporting event with regional symbols.

Doha uses the experience of major international competitions

In recent years, Qatar has systematically developed its profile as a host of major sporting events, and Gulf Games 2026 fit into that direction. The organizers emphasize that preparations rely on accumulated experience in implementing international competitions and on existing sports infrastructure. Doha is already recognized as a city with facilities that can accommodate different sports in a relatively compact area, which is important for the competition schedule, movement of delegations and spectator access. For regional games, it is additionally important that sports with different logistical requirements be placed within the same time frame, from swimming competitions and athletics to combat sports and team tournaments. The Organizing Committee therefore, in public statements, particularly emphasizes completed technical, logistical and operational preparations, including accommodation, transport and support for athletes. Although the Gulf Games are held at the regional level, the organizational standards publicly announced by the host are clearly linked to the ambition for the competition to be presented as a serious and professionally structured sporting event.

Regional sport between competition and diplomacy

The Gulf Games are not only a sports schedule with medals, but also an instrument of regional cooperation through sport. The first edition was held in Manama in 2011, with the participation of six GCC states and around 1,500 athletes in 11 sports, and Qatar then finished third with 20 medals. The fourth edition in Doha comes in a different sporting and communication environment, in which greater media visibility, better organization and stronger audience involvement are expected from regional events. Statements by officials of the Organizing Committee emphasize that sport should be a bridge of communication and a space in which shared values are turned into a visible competitive experience. Such messages are common in the context of regional multisport games, but in the case of Doha 2026 they are also linked to concrete organizational elements: the mascot, slogan, logo, sponsorship packages and opening ceremony. In this way, the event is presented as a combination of a sports tournament, regional identity and public diplomacy.

Opening on May 11 as the beginning of a twelve-day sports program

The ceremonial opening has been announced for May 11 at Al Shaqab, after which the competition program will follow and last until May 22, 2026. In the final announcements, the organizers stated that the last preparatory tasks are focused on implementing the marketing campaign, coordinating the work of the committees and encouraging the greatest possible public attendance. For athletes, coaches and delegations, the final days before the opening usually mean adapting to the venues, the rhythm of competition and the technical requirements of individual disciplines. For the host, however, the success of the event will not be measured only by the number of medals or the quality of the ceremony, but also by how much the games will fulfill the announced role of a regional sporting gathering under a shared slogan. By presenting Washeq, confirming sponsors and completing logistical preparations, Doha sent the message that Gulf Games 2026 are entering the operational phase, in which organizational announcements will very soon have to be confirmed at the venues, in the stands and in the everyday experience of athletes.
