Friendly match between DR Congo and Chile in Spain postponed due to health concerns linked to Ebola
The friendly match between the national football teams of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Chile, scheduled for June 9, 2026 in the Spanish town of La Línea de la Concepción, will not take place as originally planned after local authorities refused to grant approval for the fixture. The decision was made in the context of the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo and Uganda, and Mayor Juan Franco explained it as a precautionary measure due to the lack of sufficiently clear health guarantees. According to the announcement by the municipal administration of La Línea de la Concepción, the municipality had previously requested information from the relevant health institutions, including Sanidad Exterior, the Andalusian health authority and the local hospital, in order to assess whether there was a risk to public health. After such guarantees did not arrive in a form that would satisfy local services, the match at the Ciudad de La Línea stadium did not receive the green light. The Congolese Football Association, according to reports by the Associated Press and the Spanish agency EFE, is still trying to find a solution that would allow the match to be played at another location or under different conditions.
The match was supposed to be part of preparations for the World Cup
The duel between DR Congo and Chile was intended as one of the final tests for the Congolese national team before its appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. According to the FIFA schedule, DR Congo is in Group K, where it will face Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan, and it is due to play its first match on June 17 against Portugal in Houston. For the national team known as the Leopards, this is a return to the world stage after more than half a century, because it last participated in the tournament in 1974, then under the name Zaire. For that reason, the preparations had special sporting and symbolic importance, but the current health crisis has already disrupted them several times. The Associated Press reported that DR Congo had earlier canceled a three-day training camp and a farewell event for fans in Kinshasa, after which the preparations were moved to Europe.
According to the announcement by the Chilean Football Federation, the Chilean national team had planned matches against Portugal and DR Congo during the June international break. The match with Congo was supposed to be played in southern Spain, in a city near Gibraltar that in recent years has increasingly hosted international friendly matches. The local authority initially wanted to accept the event, but the decision was ultimately dominated by the assessment that without more complete health information it was not possible to assume responsibility for a public gathering. According to EFE reports carried by Cadena SER, the Chilean side proposed the possibility of playing without spectators, explaining that the Congolese delegation had passed health checks and was under special protocols. Such a proposal, according to information available up to June 3, 2026, did not change the decision of the local authorities in La Línea.
Local authorities requested guarantees from health institutions
The municipal administration of La Línea de la Concepción announced that Mayor Juan Franco had already stated at the beginning of the week that he could refuse the permit if he did not receive clear answers from the competent services by a certain deadline. The announcement states that the municipal authority contacted the Spanish service Sanidad Exterior, the health authorities of the autonomous community of Andalusia and the hospital in La Línea, seeking confirmation that holding the match would not pose a risk to residents and visitors. According to the same source, the motive for the decision was not sporting or political, but rather an assessment of the responsibility of the local authority in a situation in which the organization of an international event with traveling delegations was being requested. Franco emphasized in public appearances that this was a matter of health caution and that the municipality could not ignore warnings from expert services. Spanish media reported that local and regional health reports were unfavorable or insufficient for granting approval.
On the other hand, the Congolese football association FECOFA stated, according to an EFE report, that the measures taken were in line with the health, sporting and regulatory requirements applicable to such matches. The federation stated that the Congolese delegation continues to respect international protocols and that it is holding talks with the Spanish football federation and other competent bodies in order to find a quick solution. According to the same report, FECOFA wants to keep the match in the preparation schedule because the national team has very little time for additional tests ahead of the World Cup. The Congolese national team is playing a friendly match against Denmark on June 3 in Liège, Belgium, which has remained on the schedule. It is currently not officially confirmed whether the duel with Chile will be moved, played behind closed doors or canceled altogether.
The Ebola epidemic has changed sporting and travel plans
The World Health Organization announced that an outbreak of disease caused by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus was confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda in May 2026. According to the WHO, on May 17, 2026, the director of the organization declared the event a public health emergency of international concern, the highest level of alert provided for under the International Health Regulations. The organization states that this is a strain for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment, although possible candidates for therapies and vaccines are being tested. The WHO also warns that the epidemic is unfolding in complex circumstances, with a humanitarian crisis, insecurity, a mobile population and intense cross-border movements in parts of eastern Congo. Because of this context, health services emphasize the importance of contact tracing, isolation, laboratory confirmation of cases and cooperation with local communities.
According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published on June 2, 2026, the health ministries of DR Congo and Uganda reported 344 confirmed Ebola cases and 60 confirmed deaths in DR Congo, along with additional suspected cases, while Uganda reported 15 confirmed cases and one confirmed death. The CDC emphasizes that the figures may change because the situation is developing, while at the same time assessing that the overall risk to the American public and travelers is low. The article cannot draw from this the conclusion that the match itself would necessarily pose an immediate danger, but it is clear that the local Spanish authorities based their decision on caution and on the lack of complete information about the movement and health status of the delegation. For public events of this kind, especially with international arrivals, assessments are often made not only according to confirmed risk, but also according to whether organizers can document that all protocols have been fulfilled. It was precisely this difference between a medical assessment of low risk and an administrative requirement for guarantees that became decisive in this case.
DR Congo claims it respects international protocols
The Congolese side is trying to emphasize that the national team is not isolated from international health procedures. According to reports by Cadena SER and EFE, FECOFA announced that all necessary measures had been taken in order to meet the health and regulatory conditions for playing the match. The same report states that the national team had earlier moved part of its preparations from Kinshasa to Belgium, even though in the Congolese capital, according to those reports, no cases linked to the current hotspot had been registered. The epidemic is mainly linked to eastern parts of the country, especially Ituri province, which is located more than two thousand kilometers from Kinshasa. Nevertheless, because of the international travel of the sports delegation, some countries and event organizers are seeking additional guarantees about previous stays, health monitoring and possible contact with risk areas.
The Associated Press states that all DR Congo players and French coach Sébastien Desabre are based outside the country, with most of the footballers playing for European clubs, especially in France. That circumstance is important for the risk assessment, but it was not enough for the local authorities in La Línea to allow the match without additional confirmations. According to the same source, FIFA had previously stated that it was monitoring the situation linked to the Ebola outbreak and that it was in close contact with Congolese football officials so that the national team would be informed of all medical and safety guidelines. This means that the issue is not viewed only as the problem of one friendly match, but also as part of the broader logistics of the national team’s arrival at the World Cup. Ahead of a tournament involving a large number of international journeys, any change in health protocols can affect the schedule of preparations, travel and team accommodation.
What the decision means for Chile and the organizers
For the Chilean national team, the postponement means the loss of one planned match in a period when coaches usually want to check the players’ form, fine-tune the system and test a broader squad. Chile is not in the same situation as DR Congo, for which appearing at the World Cup is an immediate goal, but the June international break is nevertheless important for planning future competitive cycles. According to the official agenda of the Chilean Football Federation, the match against DR Congo was part of a program in which the national team was also supposed to play against Portugal. If the duel is not played, Chile will be left without one test against an African national team with a specific physical and tactical profile, which could affect the sporting part of the preparations. Still, the organizers’ decision shows that in international sport, health issues can very quickly emerge as a priority above competitive and commercial interests.
For La Línea de la Concepción, the case is sensitive because in recent years the city has tried to confirm its status as a host of international sporting events. Such matches can bring visibility, the arrival of delegations, spending in hospitality and additional promotion of local infrastructure. However, according to the explanation by the municipal administration, the organizational benefit could not outweigh the assessment that the conditions for complete safety and health documentation had not been met. In practice, this means that responsibility for possibly finding a new date or a new stadium will now shift to the football federations, intermediaries and possibly higher levels of sporting and health institutions. Since the match was scheduled only six days after the announcement of the decision, the room for logistical changes is very limited.
Public health caution and the sporting calendar are increasingly overlapping
This case shows how much professional sport relies on health and administrative assessments that are not always visible to the public. Friendly matches between national teams are usually arranged months in advance, but whether they take place may depend on travel rules, health certificates, assessments by local authorities and communication between national institutions. According to the WHO, the response to the Ebola epidemic in DR Congo and Uganda includes surveillance, contact tracing, clinical readiness, delivery of medical supplies and community engagement, which shows that this is a complex process that cannot be reduced to a single sporting decision. In such an environment, event organizers seek clear and verifiable information, especially when it comes to matches involving international delegations and spectators. A lack of information can itself become a reason for postponement, even when there is no publicly confirmed case linked to a particular team.
As of June 3, 2026, there was no official confirmation that the match between DR Congo and Chile had been permanently canceled, but it is clear that it will not be played in La Línea under the originally planned conditions. The Congolese federation says it is looking for a solution, the Chilean side, according to Spanish reports, was ready to consider a match without spectators, and the local authorities remained of the position that without more complete health guarantees they could not approve the event. DR Congo meanwhile continues preparations for the World Cup, where it already faces its first match against Portugal on June 17. The case shows that health crises can directly affect the sporting calendar even when the hotspots are far from the stadium where the match is supposed to be played. The final fate of the friendly duel will depend on whether the football federations and competent institutions can quickly find a model that satisfies both sporting needs and public health requirements.
