Elisa Balsamo fastest again: fourth victory at the 2026 Giro d’Italia Women, Anna van der Breggen stayed in pink

Elisa Balsamo continued her sprint dominance at the 2026 Giro d’Italia Women and won stage 6, ridden on 04 June from Ala to Brescello. According to the official results of the organizers, the stage was 159 kilometres long, with 350 metres of total elevation gain, and the Italian Lidl-Trek rider completed it in a time of 3:54:02. In the bunch sprint behind her finished Maggie Coles-Lyster from the Human Powered Health team and Georgia Baker from the Liv AlUla Jayco squad, both without a time gap. The victory carried additional weight for Balsamo because it confirmed that, on stages suited to a fast finish, she is currently the most consistent sprinter in the race.

There was no change at the top of the general classification. According to the official classification after stage 6, Anna van der Breggen from Team SD Worx-Protime retained the pink jersey of the race leader with an overall time of 19:49:15. Demi Vollering from FDJ United-SUEZ trails by one minute, while Antonia Niedermaier from Canyon//SRAM zondacrypto is third, 1:24 minutes behind. Isabella Holmgren, also from Lidl-Trek, remained the leading young rider and fourth overall, confirming her team’s strong presence in different battles of this race.

A sprint scenario after a tense finale

Although the stage profile pointed toward a sprint, the outcome was not entirely calm. The official race report states that the early breakaway consisted of Camilla Bezzone, Sharon Spimi, Gaia Segato and Irene Cagnazzo, and their advantage grew to 4:15 minutes. Such a development was expected on a day with very little climbing, but the peloton gradually kept the gap under control and did not allow the breakaway to gain a real chance for a surprise. After leaving the Adige valley and passing through the Lake Garda area, the stage entered the wider and flatter roads of the Po Valley, which suited the organization of teams with strong sprint ambitions.

The key moment before the finale itself occurred when Uno-X Mobility accelerated in the section near the Mincio nature reserve, which, according to the organizers’ report, split the peloton into groups. Marlen Reusser, one of the important riders in the general classification, found herself behind the first group and had to spend about ten kilometres investing additional energy in order to return among the leaders. In the end, she managed to regain contact about 45 kilometres before the finish, but this development showed that even on a formally flat stage the candidates for a high placing could not ride without risk. Crosswind actions and changes of pace once again confirmed that the 2026 Giro d’Italia Women is not a race in which calm days can be entered into the schedule in advance.

After the main group neutralized the early breakaway, Giorgia Serena from the Mendelspeck E-Work team tried an attack. According to the official report, her solo move reached an advantage of approximately one minute, but the sprint teams did not allow that attempt to get close to the final metres. Serena was caught just before the final ten kilometres, after which the teams devoted themselves to positioning their fastest riders. In the final kilometre there was also a crash that stretched out the peloton, but it did not prevent the expected showdown of the sprinters in Brescello.

Lidl-Trek executed the finale by the book

The official race report emphasizes that Lucinda Brand took control at the front of the group in the final phase of the sprint and pulled until approximately 200 metres before the finish. Such a move allowed Balsamo to enter the final sprint from an ideal position, without the need for a long solo acceleration. The organizers described the final kilometres as completely flat, but with several moderately demanding bends in a built-up area, while the finishing straight was 600 metres long and eight metres wide. Precisely because of this, positioning before the final exit onto the straight was just as important as explosiveness itself in the sprint.

In such circumstances, Balsamo once again showed a combination of speed, patience and trust in her team. Maggie Coles-Lyster was the closest challenger, but the Italian created a sufficiently clear gap in the final metres so that the victory was not called into question. Georgia Baker completed the podium, and behind the first three riders a larger group crossed the finish line with the same time. According to the organizers’ data, there were no abandonments in the stage, which is important ahead of the final part of the race, in which significantly tougher terrain is expected.

This victory for Balsamo is not just another individual success, but the continuation of an exceptional run at this year’s Giro. According to the organizers’ announcement, before the start of the 2026 race she had no victory in the season, and in the first six stages she recorded four official wins. One was awarded to her after the disqualification of Lorena Wiebes in the first stage, while she won the remaining three on the road. The organizers also state that no Italian rider had four stage victories in one edition since Greta Zocca in 2001, while before them Fabiana Luperini also achieved that result in 1996.

The pink jersey remained with Van der Breggen

Anna van der Breggen did not need to attack in Brescello in order to defend the lead. After taking control of the general classification in stage 4, the Belluno–Nevegal mountain time trial, her main goal on the flat stage 6 was to avoid crashes, loss of position in case of wind and unnecessary time gaps. The official classification after the stage shows that she retained a one-minute advantage over Demi Vollering and 1:24 minutes over Antonia Niedermaier. In the context of the final stages, that advantage is significant, but not unreachable, especially considering the planned mountain challenges.

For Van der Breggen it is especially important that she survived a day on which unforeseen complications could have occurred. Flat stages in major races are often viewed as an opportunity for the favourites to rest, but their real risk lies in crashes, poor positioning or the splitting of the peloton on open roads. In stage 6, precisely the crosswind, accelerations and final congestion showed that the leading rider must have a strong team and constant concentration. SD Worx-Protime managed to defend the pink jersey without a serious loss, giving the Dutch rider a stable starting point before the tougher continuation of the race.

In the other classifications, a clear distribution of jerseys also continues. According to the official data after stage 6, Elisa Balsamo leads the points classification and is the holder of the red jersey, Anna van der Breggen is also leading the mountains classification with the blue jersey, while Isabella Holmgren is the best young rider in the white jersey. Such a distribution clearly shows two levels of the race: Balsamo dominates the sprint finishes and the points battle, while the general classification is taking shape around Van der Breggen, Vollering, Niedermaier, Holmgren, Reusser and Longo Borghini.

The sixth stage brought respite from major climbs, but not from tension

The Ala–Brescello route was one of the most favourable for sprinters in this year’s edition. The organizer described the route as almost completely flat, passing from the Adige valley through the Passo di Loppio area, then along the eastern shore of Lake Garda toward Peschiera del Garda and onward toward the Po Valley. The more technically demanding opening section, with several tunnels and narrower roads, gradually turned into wider and flatter sections that favoured a large peloton. Such a configuration explains why the sprint teams had reason from the start to believe that, by controlling the race, they would arrive at a bunch sprint.

Brescello as the finish location gave the stage a recognizable local framework. According to the official race presentation, it is a municipality in the province of Reggio Emilia, in the Emilia-Romagna region, by the River Po. The place is known in Italy for its connection with the characters Don Camillo and Peppone from the works of Giovannino Guareschi, which gives the finale a cultural context beyond the sporting result itself. Giro d’Italia Women thereby continues the practice of linking a sporting event with the local identity of the host towns, which is an important part of Italian stage races.

For the peloton, stage 6 came after a more demanding block in which the mountain terrain and the time trial had already created gaps in the general classification. Cyclingnews states in its race overview that the 2026 Giro d’Italia Women runs from 30 May to 07 June, has nine stages and covers a total of 1,153.7 kilometres from Cesenatico to Saluzzo. The race is part of the highest level of women’s road cycling, the UCI Women’s WorldTour, and this year’s edition has received increased attention also because it is being held in a time slot that connects it more directly with the men’s Giro. Such a calendar position increases the visibility of the race, but also emphasizes the competitive value of stage victories and the battle for the general classification.

Balsamo is building a Giro to remember

Elisa Balsamo was already a confirmed name in cycling terms, but her run at the 2026 Giro d’Italia Women gives her season a completely different tone. According to the organizers’ official announcement, the fact that she was winless in the season before the race further highlights the sudden turnaround in form. In the sprint in Brescello she looked calm and assured, and the largest part of the work was done by the team that led her into the space from which she could use her finishing speed. For a sprinter, such a combination is important because individual explosiveness rarely comes to the fore without the proper distribution of power and precise delivery into the final few hundred metres.

Her performance also has wider meaning for Lidl-Trek. Through Balsamo, the team simultaneously holds the points classification and stage victories, while Holmgren remains important in the fight for the young rider classification and high in the general classification. Lucinda Brand, who performed the key job in the finale of stage 6, once again showed how decisive the riders who do not appear in first place in the results are for sprint success, because through their work they create the winning position. In major races, such a collective performance often decides more than the final speed itself.

For Balsamo’s rivals, the stage in Brescello was another reminder that against Lidl-Trek’s sprint it will not be enough simply to wait for the final 200 metres. It is necessary to disrupt their train earlier, enter the bends ahead of them or force Balsamo into a longer sprint. Maggie Coles-Lyster and Georgia Baker showed that they can be close, but they did not manage to find space for a final pass. On stages with a flat profile, Balsamo has so far shown the most repeatability, and repeatability is precisely one of the most important qualities of a sprinter in a multi-day race.

The final part of the race brings back the battle for the general classification

After the sprint day, the focus shifts again toward the candidates for overall victory. According to the organizers’ official schedule, stage 7 is ridden on 05 June from Sorbolo Mezzani to Salice Terme, on a route of 159 kilometres and with 1,000 metres of total climbing. The organizers describe it as an Apennine stage divided into two parts: the first passes through the Po Valley toward Piacenza, and then it enters the hills of Oltrepò, with the summit near Pietragavina. The final kilometres should be slightly downhill or flat, but with two bends in the final kilometre, the last of which comes 200 metres before the finish.

Such a profile could again open space for attacks by riders who are not classic sprinters, but not pure climbing specialists either. For Van der Breggen and her closest rivals, stage 7 will be important as a transition toward an even harder final weekend. According to the schedule published by Cycling Weekly, after it comes stage 8, Rivoli–Sestriere via the Colle delle Finestre area, and then the final stage Saluzzo–Saluzzo. It is precisely that final block that should provide the definitive answer as to whether Van der Breggen can control the race to the end or whether Vollering, Niedermaier, Reusser, Longo Borghini and the other challengers will find room for a turnaround.

Balsamo did in Brescello what was expected of her, but the way she did it further strengthened her status as the most successful sprinter of this edition. Van der Breggen, on the other hand, comes out of the flat stage without a loss and with the pink jersey on her shoulders. Thus, after stage 6, the 2026 Giro d’Italia Women has two clearly defined stories: Balsamo as the symbol of sprint superiority and Van der Breggen as the leading figure in the battle for overall triumph. The final stages will decide whether that balance will be maintained until Saluzzo or whether the mountains will change the order again.
