Esports World Cup 2026 moves from Riyadh to Paris due to security and travel circumstances in the Middle East

Esports World Cup 2026, one of the world’s largest competitions in professional esports, will be held in Paris instead of Riyadh, the Esports Foundation announced on May 20, 2026. According to the organizers’ official announcement, the tournament remains in the same period, from July 6 to August 23, 2026, but the hosting is being moved to France after an extended assessment of the “current regional situation”. Paris will thereby become the first city outside Saudi Arabia to host the Esports World Cup, a competition that since its founding has been strongly connected with Riyadh and Saudi investments in the gaming industry. The organizers state that the decision was made in order to provide players, clubs, teams and fans with greater predictability when planning travel and arrival at the event.

Paris takes over the seven-week event

According to data from the Esports Foundation, the 2026 edition is expected to bring together more than 2,000 players from more than 200 clubs and from more than 100 countries. Competitions have been announced in 24 games and across 25 tournaments, while the total prize pool exceeds 75 million US dollars, making it a record for this series. The organizer has confirmed that the core dates are not changing, although it is possible that individual tournament schedules will be slightly adjusted after the change of host city. Details about the specific Paris venue, tickets, festival program and final schedule should be announced later. For visitors planning a trip to France, especially those who will follow multiple tournaments during the summer, timely travel planning and accommodation for event visitors in Paris could become an important part of preparation as soon as the organizers announce the venue.
The decision is important also because the Esports World Cup is not just a classic competition in one game, but a multi-day and multi-tournament format that brings together a large number of professional organizations, publishers, sponsors, production teams and audiences. In its official answers to frequently asked questions, the Esports Foundation states that Paris was chosen because it provides the international accessibility, infrastructure and competitive conditions needed for an event of full global scope. The organizer also claims that the games that are part of the Club Championship remain unchanged. This means that the change currently concerns the city and the operational framework, not the fundamental competitive concept.

Organizers speak of accelerated international rotation

The Esports Foundation presented the change as an acceleration of the previously envisioned international rotation of the Esports World Cup. The official announcement states that the long-term vision of the competition was to grow into a global platform that would, over time, be held in major cities around the world. Ralf Reichert, CEO of the Esports Foundation, said that Riyadh helped turn the Esports World Cup into a global phenomenon, but that this year’s edition in Paris will be the competition’s first international chapter. According to his statement, Paris was chosen as a city with experience in organizing major sporting events and as a global center of sport, culture and entertainment. At the same time, the organizer emphasizes that Riyadh remains central to the long-term future of the event, with the intention of returning to the Saudi capital in 2027.
Such an explanation carefully avoids more detailed political wording, but points to the same conclusion previously reported by specialized media: travel safety and uncertainty in the region have become key risks for an event of this scale. GamesBeat, citing people familiar with the organizers’ communication to stakeholders, reported that the relocation is connected with war and regional instability in the Middle East. The same outlet states that in 2025 more than 2,500 players and team members traveled to Riyadh during the previous edition, which shows how important international mobility is for running the tournament. When an event relies on the arrival of such a large number of competitors, coaching staff members, commentators, production personnel and business partners, even limited disruptions in air traffic or security assessments can have chain effects. For that reason, the decision on Paris can be interpreted as an attempt to reduce risk before possible problems could threaten the very start of the tournament.

Tickets for Riyadh will be refunded, Paris tickets are not yet on sale

The Esports Foundation announced that buyers of tickets for the edition planned in Riyadh will automatically receive a full refund. According to the rules listed in the official questions-and-answers section, the refund should be made to the same payment method or bank card used for the purchase, no later than within 21 working days, although the organizer states that faster processing is expected in most cases. Buyers who already had tickets for Riyadh should also receive a special promotional code when the new ticket sales platform for Paris opens. Tickets for the Paris edition have not yet been put on sale, and details should, according to the organizer’s announcement, be known in the coming weeks. For fans, this means that there is currently a confirmed city and time frame, but not yet a complete picture of venues, schedule and prices.
The change of host city at this stage is particularly demanding because many visitors already plan trips months in advance, and professional teams have separate obligations toward players, sponsors and game publishers. Clubs must coordinate training, visas, accommodation, equipment, media activities and appearances across several titles, often with different rosters. Since the event will be held during July and August, a period of strong tourist demand in the French capital, timely travel reservations and accommodation offers in Paris are expected to be especially relevant for visitors who want to follow the finals of the more popular competitions. The organizer has not yet announced whether part of the program will be held at one location or across several venues.

A Saudi project with global ambitions

The Esports World Cup was launched as a successor to and expansion of Saudi ambitions in the gaming and esports sector. The Saudi Press Agency reported in 2023 that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the Esports World Cup and the establishment of the Esports World Cup Foundation as a non-profit organization intended for cooperation among stakeholders in esports and for strengthening the sustainability of the sector. The Saudi Public Investment Fund and the broader state strategy in digital entertainment are part of efforts to position the country as a global center of sport, gaming and major events. The Public Investment Fund has emphasized in its own announcements that the national strategy for gaming and esports envisages the creation of 39,000 jobs and a contribution of 13.3 billion dollars to Saudi GDP. In that context, the Esports World Cup has had both a sporting and an economic dimension from the beginning.
The first edition of the competition was held in Riyadh in 2024, with a prize pool that, according to a PIF announcement, exceeded 60 million dollars. The 2025 edition further expanded the format, and the organizer at the time highlighted more than 2,000 players, 24 titles, 200 clubs and global broadcasting in a large number of countries. From the perspective of the esports industry, the event is important because it brings together multiple games and tries to give clubs a stronger financial framework through club competition, partnership programs and larger prizes. From the perspective of Saudi Arabia, the event is part of a broader policy of investing in entertainment, tourism, sport and technology. The move from Riyadh to Paris therefore does not mean only a logistical change, but also the temporary relocation of one of the most visible Saudi sports projects to the European market.

Travel safety has become a decisive variable

Major international events increasingly have to take into account security and geopolitical circumstances that change faster than standard organizational cycles. In the case of the Esports World Cup 2026, the key problem is not only holding the competition in an arena, but the possibility that all participants arrive on time and without major disruptions. Esports tournaments of this scope depend on a precise schedule of matches, technical rehearsals, media obligations and live production, so the delay of a larger number of players or teams can jeopardize the entire format. GamesBeat stated in its analysis that disruptions in air traffic toward the Middle East and security concerns increased the risk of postponements or cancellations. In its public announcement, the official organizer speaks more generally about the current regional situation, coordination with stakeholders and the need for a stable environment.
Such language is common when organizers want to confirm operational reasons without entering into diplomatic or military details. For teams and game publishers, the most important thing is that the rules, titles and basic calendar do not change, while local details will be developed later. For Paris, which recently hosted major sporting events and has developed transport, hotel and production infrastructure, this is an opportunity to further position itself as a European center of esports. For Riyadh, the organizer’s message that it remains key to the long-term future of the EWC softens the impression of a complete reversal and suggests that this is a temporary operational solution. Still, the decision confirms that even digitally oriented sports are not isolated from international crises.

What is known about the competition so far

According to official information, the Esports World Cup 2026 in Paris retains the seven-week framework from July 6 to August 23. The organizer announces more than 2,000 players, more than 200 clubs, participants from more than 100 countries, 24 games and 25 tournaments. The prize pool of more than 75 million dollars should be the largest in the history of this competition. The official Esports World Cup website on May 22, 2026 also shows the qualification path toward the EWC, including the number of already secured slots, which shows that the competitive process has not been stopped due to the change of host. The organizer also states that more information about the schedule, tickets and festival program will be announced soon.
It is not yet known whether the change of city will affect the schedule of individual finals, venue allocation, accompanying concerts, fan zones or media activities. It has also not been officially confirmed whether French institutions, Paris authorities or other local organizations will participate financially in hosting the event. GamesBeat stated that it is currently unclear whether the French government, the city of Paris or another related institution is paying a fee for the right to organize this year’s edition. That information is important because hosting fees, sponsorships and advertising are part of the business model of major sports and entertainment events.

Reactions and broader significance for esports

French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the arrival of the Esports World Cup in Paris, Beebom reported, citing his post on the platform X. According to that report, Macron said that it was the first such event that honors France and thanked Saudi Arabia for its trust. Political support from the host is important because an event of this scale requires coordination with local and national institutions, especially when the change is being carried out at short notice. France already has a strong esports scene, including clubs, audiences and events connected with the most popular competitive titles. Hosting the EWC could further strengthen Paris’s position in the European and global esports calendar.
At the same time, the relocation does not remove the debates surrounding Saudi investments in sport and esports. Critics have warned for years that investments in international sporting events can serve as a form of strengthening political influence and improving the country’s image, while supporters emphasize infrastructure development, the professionalization of the industry and new sources of income for clubs and players. The Esports World Cup sits exactly at the intersection of these two debates: on one hand, it offers prize pools and production standards that few in the industry can match, while on the other, it remains connected with Saudi Arabia’s state strategy. The Paris edition in 2026 will therefore be observed not only as a sporting event, but also as a test of the EWC’s ability to function outside its original base in Riyadh. If the organizers successfully carry out the tournament in the new city, international rotation could become a more convincing part of the competition’s future identity.

Riyadh remains in the plans for 2027

Despite the relocation of this year’s edition, the Esports Foundation explicitly states that Riyadh remains important for the long-term future of the Esports World Cup. In the official questions-and-answers section, the organizer states that there is an intention to return to the Saudi capital in 2027. Such wording shows that the change for 2026 is not being presented as an abandonment of Riyadh, but as an exception connected with current circumstances. For Saudi Arabia, the return of the event would be important because the EWC is one of the symbols of its strategy in esports and digital entertainment. For international clubs, however, the most important thing will be that travel conditions, the calendar and the security framework are clarified in time for every future edition.
Until then, attention will be focused on Paris and the organizers’ ability to rearrange all parts of a major esports-entertainment project at short notice. Competitors are waiting for confirmation of detailed schedules, fans for information about tickets and locations, and sponsors and game publishers for the adaptation of marketing and production plans. Given that the dates have remained the same, the time available for adjustments is not large. The Esports World Cup 2026 thus enters the final phase of preparations with a confirmed new destination, a record announced prize pool and additional public attention because of the reasons that led to the move. The Paris version of the competition will show whether the event can maintain the scope and ambition thanks to which it has, in only a few years, become one of the most watched names in global esports.
