Flensburg said goodbye to the home season with a victory against Eisenach, Simon Pytlick scored 11 goals

SG Flensburg-Handewitt concluded its final home match of the league season with a 36:31 victory against ThSV Eisenach at the GP Joule Arena in Flensburg. The match of the 33rd round of the German Handball-Bundesliga was played on Thursday, 4 June 2026, and the home team went into the break with a 21:18 lead. According to SG Flensburg-Handewitt's official schedule, it was the team's penultimate league match of the season, because Flensburg will visit Füchse Berlin at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in the final round on 7 June. The standout individual of the match was the Danish backcourt player Simon Pytlick, who scored 11 goals and, in the closing stage of the home season, once again confirmed his role as a key attacking solution for Aleš Pajovič's team. For Eisenach, according to the report by the German news agency dpa, the top scorer was Felix Aellen with six goals, but the visiting team failed to make use of the periods in which it stayed in touch.

Flensburg's victory did not change the basic framework of the championship finale, but it was important for stabilizing the team after a demanding period in which the club was left without a chance of winning the title and practically lost ground in the fight for second place. According to the official table published on SG's club website, Flensburg after 33 matches played has 51:15 points, 24 wins, three draws and six defeats, with a goal difference of +121. Ahead of them are the new champions SC Magdeburg with 62:4 points and Füchse Berlin with 53:13 points and a better goal difference of +186. Since, according to DAIKIN Handball-Bundesliga rules, the ranking after the end of the championship in the event of a tie on points is first determined by the better overall goal difference, Flensburg would have to achieve an exceptionally high victory in Berlin in the final round in order to take second place. The sporting significance of the final clash therefore remains great, but the table manoeuvring room for the team from Schleswig-Holstein after the 33rd round is very narrow.

Pytlick carried the attack, Flensburg broke the match open after the red card

Eisenach appeared in Flensburg more relaxed than its position in the lower part of the table would suggest, because survival in the top tier, according to DAIKIN HBL previews and announcements from the club from Thuringia, had been secured before the visit to SG. This was visible in the first half, in which the visiting team did not retreat before the favourite and on several occasions held a minimal lead. According to the dpa report, Eisenach showed courage in attack, tried to speed up the game and did not allow Flensburg to create a larger gap early. The hosts, however, had a broader rotation and a more precise Pytlick, and the closing minutes of the first half brought an event that noticeably changed the rhythm of the match. In the 28th minute, Eisenach captain and defensive specialist Peter Walz received a red card after a blow to the face of Lasse Møller, dpa states, after which Flensburg went into halftime with a three-goal advantage.

Although the 21:18 score at the break could not be considered unreachable, Eisenach had to look for additional solutions in defence and rotation after Walz's sending-off. Flensburg maintained the lead in the second half and did not allow the guests to bring the match back into complete uncertainty. The key difference was that Pytlick constantly found space between the back line and the middle of the defence, while the home team managed to punish moments in which Eisenach had to take on more risk. According to the dpa report, the visiting team kept the deficit within tolerable limits, but failed to stop the Danish international, who finished the match with 11 goals as Flensburg's clearly best scorer. Such attacking efficiency was decisive in a match in which the hosts did not pull away with an explosive run, but through the gradual maintenance of control.

One of the moments that further steered the final stage occurred in the 47th minute. According to dpa, Felix Aellen then missed a seven-metre throw with the score at 28:24 for Flensburg, and for the second time during the match, which meant a missed opportunity for Eisenach to further reduce the deficit and increase the pressure on the hosts. In matches against teams of Flensburg's quality, such details carry great weight, because every unused opportunity quickly becomes space for an opposing counterattack or a calmer organization of the next attack. SG kept its patience precisely in that phase, did not allow a run by the visitors and gradually brought the match to an end. The final 36:31 reflects a match in which Eisenach was competitive for a long time, but did not have enough solutions for the final pressure or for Pytlick's individual level.

Flensburg's victory as a response to a difficult closing part of the season

For Flensburg, this match also had psychological value, because it came after several sporting blows in a short period. According to DAIKIN HBL's preview for the 33rd round, SG went into the duel with Eisenach having suffered three consecutive defeats in all competitions. In the Bundesliga it first lost to SC Magdeburg, whereby Magdeburg confirmed the championship title, and then also to TVB Stuttgart, while in the EHF European League it was left without a title defence after losing to MT Melsungen in the semifinal of the final tournament. In such a context, the home victory against Eisenach could not return Flensburg to the title race, but it enabled the team to say goodbye to its league appearances at the GP Joule Arena in front of its own fans with a victory. For a club that spent the season near the top of the table, but lost touch with the champion in the closing stage, this was an important minimum sporting response.

Official DAIKIN HBL data before the match additionally emphasized how much Flensburg's attack during the season depended on the productivity of the backcourt and wing line. Before the 33rd round, the league stated that Emil Jakobsen, Marko Grgic and Simon Pytlick had together scored 532 league goals. That figure shows the breadth of the attacking output, but the match against Eisenach clearly singled out Pytlick as the player who took responsibility in the most important moments. According to the official profile of SG Flensburg-Handewitt, Pytlick is a Danish international and left back, and has played for the club since 2023. His performance against Eisenach therefore fits into the broader picture of a season in which he was one of the central players of Flensburg's attack and one of the toughest defensive tasks for opponents.

The victory also came at a moment when Flensburg had to deal with the reality of the standings. SC Magdeburg, according to announcements by DAIKIN HBL and the club from Magdeburg, had already secured the fourth German championship title in the club's history with a 31:30 victory precisely against Flensburg. Thus the fight for the top was over before the final round, and the focus shifted to the distribution of positions behind the champion and to European ambitions. Füchse Berlin, after a 39:28 victory at MT Melsungen, as dpa reported, remained two points ahead of Flensburg and additionally increased their advantage in goal difference. In practice this means that Flensburg will play in Berlin against a direct competitor for prestige and the final impression, but for a change in the standings it will need a result that almost never happens in modern elite handball.

Eisenach remains in the league, but away performance remains a problem

ThSV Eisenach came to Flensburg with the main goal of the season already achieved, remaining in the Bundesliga. According to the club's announcement from the end of May, results in the league mathematically confirmed that Eisenach will remain part of the top tier of German handball in the next season as well. This is an important success for a club competing in an extremely demanding environment, where the difference between mid-table and the relegation zone often depends on short runs of results, squad depth and the stability of home performances. Still, the defeat in Flensburg confirmed that away form was one of the main limitations of Sebastian Hinze's team. According to the dpa report, this was Eisenach's 14th defeat in 17 away matches this league season.

The official table of SG Flensburg-Handewitt after the 33rd round shows that Eisenach has 21:45 points, eight wins, five draws and 20 defeats, with a goal difference of -66. Such a record keeps the club in 13th place, ahead of teams that are directly fighting for survival or are already in major trouble, but also far enough from mid-table that the season finale could be completely calm. In this match, Flensburg punished what had often been repeated for Eisenach on away trips: sufficiently good periods of play were not always accompanied by precision and concentration in the key moments. Aellen's missed seven-metre throw, the red card for Walz and the inability to stop Pytlick were not the only reasons for the defeat, but they clearly showed where the match broke away from the visitors' plan. For Hinze's team, the positive thing remains that despite the defeat it showed a competitive attitude against the favoured opponent.

Eisenach will, according to the league schedule, host Handball Sport Verein Hamburg in the final round, while Flensburg will visit Füchse Berlin. Both matches will be played on Sunday, 7 June, at the time when the 60th season of the DAIKIN Handball-Bundesliga is concluded simultaneously. For Eisenach, the final round will be an opportunity to close the season in front of its fans and confirm the status of a team that, despite a weak away record, managed to stay in the strongest German competition. For Flensburg, the finale carries a different weight: it is a clash against one of the best teams in the league, but also a test of character after a season in which high ambitions remained partly unfulfilled. The match against Eisenach therefore served as a necessary respite from a series of defeats and as a reminder that SG, especially when Pytlick has such an attacking rhythm, still has pronounced individual and collective quality.

The broader context of the Bundesliga finale

The German Handball-Bundesliga in the 2025/26 season has reached its finale with the champion already confirmed, but also with several open questions in the fight for European positions and survival. According to DAIKIN HBL, the 33rd round was part of a double final week that concludes the 60th season of the competition. Before the round, the league stated that Füchse Berlin could take a decisive step toward second place, while teams from the lower part of the table were looking for points to stay up. After the results of the 33rd round, Flensburg remained third, Berlin kept second place, and Magdeburg continued the season with a large lead and the status of new champion. Such a ranking gives a clear picture of the top: Magdeburg marked the season with exceptional consistency, Berlin took a better position than Flensburg in the closing stage, and SG had to be satisfied with a place that brings high sporting value, but not the fulfilment of the greatest domestic ambitions.

In that broader framework, the 36:31 victory against Eisenach does not have a sensational character, but it has importance in maintaining continuity and self-confidence. Against a team that had already saved itself from relegation, Flensburg had to show that it could do the job without an additional loss of rhythm. It managed to do so with controlled play after an unpleasant first half, greater quality in the closing stage of attacks and the individual class of Pytlick. Eisenach, on the other hand, can point to a fighting performance and periods of evenly matched play, but cannot separate itself from the fact that another away match ended in defeat. Precisely that combination of Flensburg's home efficiency and Eisenach's away shortcomings gave the match a shape in which the favourite ultimately justified its role, although without complete domination from the first to the last minute.
