Krejcikova convincingly passes Vandewinkel to reach the Libéma Open quarterfinals in Rosmalen

Barbora Krejcikova secured a place in the quarterfinals of the WTA Libéma Open tournament after defeating Hanne Vandewinkel 6-1, 6-4 in the second round on the grass courts of Autotron Rosmalen in 's-Hertogenbosch. According to the official announcement by the tournament organizers, the Czech tennis player, the eighth seed in the draw, confirmed her status as favorite and continued a successful start to the grass-court part of the season. The match was played on 11 June 2026, and the scoreline shows the difference in experience, rhythm and ability to control points on a fast surface. Vandewinkel, a Belgian qualifier, entered the match with visible competitive momentum, but against a two-time Grand Slam singles champion she did not manage to maintain pressure for long enough. Krejcikova opened the duel particularly convincingly, and then in the second set withstood a steadier resistance from her opponent and closed out the match without needing a deciding set.

The favorite quickly imposed her rhythm

The first set brought the clearest picture of the balance of power. Krejcikova immediately took the initiative, used the advantage of the early strike and shortened exchanges whenever she had the opportunity to open up the court. The 6-1 score was not only the consequence of greater experience, but also of the tactical discipline with which the Czech limited the Belgian player’s space to develop her own rhythm. On grass, where points are often decided in the first few shots after the serve or return, such early control carries special weight. According to the official WTA draw, Krejcikova defeated Renata Zarazua 6-1, 6-2 in the first round, so against Vandewinkel as well she continued her run of convincing sets in Rosmalen. Her game so far suggests that she has quickly adapted to conditions that reward precision, low bounce and rapid changes of direction.

The second set was more demanding, but it did not change the overall impression of the match. Vandewinkel found more security in her service games and managed to stay closer on the scoreboard than in the first part of the match, but Krejcikova retained enough composure in the key moments. The final 6-4 in the second set indicates that the Belgian raised her level of resistance, though not enough to turn around the dynamics of the duel. The Czech avoided unnecessarily prolonging the match in the closing stages, which is an additional advantage at a tournament with a packed schedule. On grass, momentum can change very quickly, especially if the underdog catches a run of short points, but Krejcikova absorbed most such situations with experience and patient construction of attacks.

A place among the best eight and the continuation of the grass-court season

The victory over Vandewinkel took Krejcikova into the quarterfinals, where, according to the organizers’ announcement and the official tournament schedule, Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse awaits her. That match is scheduled for 12 June 2026 in a program that begins at 11 a.m. local time. Ruse reached the quarterfinals with a victory over third seed Elise Mertens 6-3, 6-3, which further increases the competitive value of the next test for the Czech player. The organizer described that result as a kind of revenge for last year’s final, in which Mertens had been more successful, so the quarterfinal duel between Krejcikova and Ruse will also have a broader context within the women’s part of the tournament. For Krejcikova it is important that she reaches this stage without dropping a set, and with relatively short and scoreboard-controlled performances.

The Libéma Open traditionally opens an important part of the grass-court season, immediately after the end of Roland-Garros and before Wimbledon. According to official WTA data, the tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch belongs to the WTA 250 category, is played on grass, and the 2026 edition in the main draw runs from 8 to 14 June. The official tournament website states that the entire program at Autotron takes place from 6 to 14 June, which also includes activities before the start of the main part of the competition. For players who want to build form on grass before Wimbledon, Rosmalen offers an opportunity for quick adaptation to the surface, but also for testing the serve, return and movement in conditions in which mistakes are often punished immediately. In that sense, Krejcikova’s progress to the quarterfinals has greater significance than the second-round victory itself, because it shows that her game is once again gaining clear contours on the surface on which she has already achieved the greatest result of her career.

Krejcikova returns to a court that suits her

Krejcikova comes to Rosmalen as a player with one of the most varied résumés in women’s tennis. According to her official WTA profile, she is currently the world No. 45, while her best career ranking in singles was No. 2. The WTA states that she has eight WTA singles titles in her career, including Roland-Garros 2021 and Wimbledon 2024, which places her among the rare active players who have won Grand Slam titles on markedly different surfaces. In addition, she has achieved top results in doubles, where she was the world No. 1, so her game carries elements of exceptional net control, feel for angles and the ability to read opponents’ intentions. Those qualities are especially useful on grass, where a well-timed move forward or a precise sliced shot can change the course of a game.

The official WTA profile recalls that Krejcikova missed the first five months of the 2025 season because of a back injury, and returning to competitive rhythm after such a break often requires more than a few tournaments. That is why her entry into the quarterfinals of the Libéma Open is also important from the perspective of continuity. It is not only a matter of getting past a lower-ranked opponent, but a confirmation that she can string together two victories on a surface that demands decisiveness and physical freshness. The tournament organizer pointed out that the eighth seed had earlier in the week spoken about how satisfied she was with the start of the grass-court season, and her play in the first two rounds confirmed that at the level of results as well. At the same time, it must not be overlooked that Krejcikova, when healthy and rhythmically stable, has enough tactical solutions to adapt to different profiles of opponents.

Vandewinkel stopped after a successful entry from qualifying

Hanne Vandewinkel left the singles draw in the second round, but her performance in Rosmalen cannot be reduced only to the defeat by the favorite. According to the official WTA profile, the Belgian tennis player is 22 years old, is ranked No. 97 in singles, and her career-best ranking is No. 92. The same database states that in 2025 she won a WTA 125 title in Tampico and that in that season she entered the top 200, showing that she is a player still making her way toward stable status at the highest level. In Rosmalen she competed as a qualifier, and the official WTA draw shows that in the main tournament before the duel with Krejcikova she defeated Nikola Bartunkova 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-5. Such a result indicates that she reached the match against the eighth seed through a demanding and emotionally challenging path.

For Vandewinkel, the match against Krejcikova was a useful but difficult test. In the first set she did not have enough time to adapt to the quality of her opponent’s ball, and on grass such a deficit can rarely be repaired gradually. In the second set she showed more resilience and managed to force Krejcikova into longer work, but the difference in experience in the closing stages of games remained visible. The Belgian entered the tournament with positive signals from qualifying and the first round, but the duel with a former Wimbledon champion showed how steep the transition is from a successful qualifying run to victories over players who have Grand Slam experience. Despite the defeat, the results from Rosmalen could help her in the continuation of the season, especially if she maintains continuity in entering main draws and manages to reduce fluctuations against higher-ranked players.

The grass surface highlighted Krejcikova’s strengths

The duel in 's-Hertogenbosch showed why Krejcikova is dangerous on grass even when she is not among the top ten in the world rankings. Her game does not depend exclusively on the power of her groundstrokes, but on a combination of changes of rhythm, precise positioning and patient opening of the court. On grass, such elements are especially important because the ball stays lower after the bounce, and defensive reactions require quicker feet and earlier decision-making. Vandewinkel managed in several parts of the second set to extend the rallies and keep the score open, but she did not find a lasting solution for her opponent’s variety. Krejcikova, meanwhile, avoided the trap of unnecessary forcing, which is often decisive against opponents coming from qualifying and playing with less scoreboard pressure.

It is also important that Krejcikova has lost a total of only eight games in two rounds. According to the official WTA draw, she beat Zarazua 6-1, 6-2, and Vandewinkel 6-1, 6-4. Such a run does not guarantee continued tournament success, but it shows that her serving pattern and her play after the first shot are so far fitting well into the conditions in Rosmalen. In tournaments that serve as preparation for Wimbledon, the result is not the only measure, because players are often looking for competitive feel and movement rhythm on grass. Still, convincing victories have psychological value, especially for a player who, after injuries and changes in form, is trying to move back closer to the level at which she won the biggest titles. In that sense, against Vandewinkel Krejcikova got both the result and confirmation that she can lead a match from start to finish.

The quarterfinal draw brings increasingly serious challenges

Reaching the quarterfinals brings Krejcikova a new test against Ruse, a player who has already shown in Rosmalen that she can eliminate a seed of high reputation. According to the organizers’ announcement, Ruse defeated Mertens, the defending champion and third seed, in the second round, thereby opening up the lower part of the draw and sending a clear message that she will not be merely a passing obstacle. Krejcikova will have to maintain aggression from the start of points in that duel, but also watch out for periods in which her opponent can take control with shots from the baseline. Unlike the match with Vandewinkel, in which the difference in reputation and experience was more pronounced, the quarterfinal could bring more open exchanges and less room for a slower entry into a set. On grass, one lost service game often changes an entire set, so the opening games will once again be of great importance.

The broader draw shows that the tournament in the women’s competition has already produced several scoreboard shifts. The organizer reported that Magda Linette defeated 17-year-old Mia Pohankova 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16, while Daria Snigur got past Panna Udvardy in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The official WTA draw also states that Zeynep Sonmez advanced after Anastasia Potapova retired at 6-1, 2-0, which further changes the balance in the closing stages of the tournament. Such outcomes confirm that WTA 250 tournaments in the weeks after Roland-Garros often have a very changeable competitive character, because players adapt to grass at different speeds. In such an environment, Krejcikova’s stability in her first two appearances gains additional weight, but it does not remove the pressure brought by each subsequent round.

Rosmalen as an early test of form before Wimbledon

For Krejcikova, Rosmalen is more than a stop on the calendar. After she won Wimbledon in 2024, each of her appearances on grass is viewed through the question of whether she can once again reach the top level on the surface on which she achieved the second Grand Slam singles title of her career. According to the WTA profile, she finished the 2024 season among the top ten after triumphing in London and reaching the semifinals of the WTA Finals, but her later path was also marked by health difficulties. That is why tournaments such as the Libéma Open are important for testing not only results, but also the quality of movement, endurance in repeated matches and the ability to build form from week to week. The victory over Vandewinkel does not answer all those questions, but it provides a positive foundation for the continuation of the tournament.

The Belgian qualifier is left with the experience of playing against one of the most successful tennis players of her generation, while Krejcikova has the opportunity in the quarterfinals to confirm that her two opening victories were not merely the consequence of a favorable draw. Given that the official tournament schedule for 12 June 2026 places her match against Ruse at the start of the WTA program, the Czech player will quickly get a new test in conditions that could be similar to those from the duel with Vandewinkel. If she maintains the precision of her first strike and the level of concentration from the first two rounds, she will have a realistic foundation for continuing her path toward the final stages. The Libéma Open has at this stage already entered the part of the tournament in which reputation is no longer enough, but Krejcikova showed with the 6-1, 6-4 victory that her ambition in Rosmalen has firm scoreboard support.
