Germany concerned by Lennart Karl's injury ahead of the World Cup: Nagelsmann awaits findings before possible replacement

The German national football team faced a serious problem just a few days before the start of the 2026 World Cup after Bayern's 18-year-old attacking player Lennart Karl was injured during training in Chicago. According to a Reuters report, Karl sustained an as yet unspecified injury on Friday, June 5, 2026, during preparation for Germany's final test before the tournament, a friendly match against the United States of America. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed at a press conference that the young player had been sent to hospital for additional tests and scans. "It does not look good," Nagelsmann said, adding that a medical diagnosis must be awaited before any decision is made. For now, according to the available information, it has not been officially confirmed what kind of injury it is or whether Karl will have to miss the World Cup.

An injury at the most sensitive moment of preparations

The news of Karl's injury resonated especially strongly because it comes in the final phase of Germany's preparations, immediately before the departure to the base camp and the start of competition in Group E. Germany will play against the USA on Saturday, June 6, at Soldier Field in Chicago, which the DFB had earlier marked as the team's final international match before the start of the World Cup. According to official data from the German Football Association, the match against the American national team begins at 20:30 Central European Time, or 13:30 local time in Chicago. Karl's injury occurred precisely in the period when coaches usually settle their final tactical dilemmas, check players' workload and try to avoid additional risks. Instead of a calm conclusion to preparations, Germany must now wait for findings that could change the squad for the tournament.

Nagelsmann, according to Reuters, emphasized that the situation must first be clarified medically. The head coach said that the national team would wait for the scans and only then inform the public whether Karl can continue with the team or whether it will be necessary to call up another player. In the same address, he asked that the young footballer be given peace while the severity of the injury is being determined. That tone in the coach's statement shows that the German staff do not want to rush into predictions, but also that the possibility of missing the tournament cannot be ruled out. For a player who, ahead of the championship, was one of the most interesting names on Germany's squad list, the uncertainty itself already represents a heavy blow.

From a surprise on the squad list to a candidate for serious minutes

Karl entered the World Cup squad as one of the youngest and most interesting assets of the German national team. On May 21, the DFB announced Nagelsmann's 26-man squad for the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico, with the team led by captain Joshua Kimmich. In that context, Karl was not only a symbol of renewal, but also a player who in recent months had rapidly moved from club talent to potentially important international. Reuters states that his rise at Bayern was one of the reasons why he entered the final squad, although until recently his candidacy had been considered a surprise. In recent days, according to reports from the German camp, he had also increasingly been mentioned as a possible option for the right side of the attack.

His profile explains why the injury could have broader tactical consequences. Karl is an attacking midfielder who can operate between the lines, but also in wide positions, and Bayern describes him in its official profile as a player who stands out for his finishing and dribbling. The Bundesliga, in its official statistics for the 2025/26 season, states that Karl recorded 26 league appearances, five goals and five assists. Bayern also states that he made his professional debut in June 2025 at the FIFA Club World Cup and that from the 2025/26 season he has been a permanent member of the first team. Such development made him one of the most closely followed young German players ahead of the tournament.

Additional weight is given to his rise by the fact that in October 2025 he became Bayern's youngest goalscorer in the Champions League, according to data from the Munich club. That fact is not only a statistical curiosity, but also an explanation of why Nagelsmann saw in him a different kind of solution in the attacking rotation. Germany has experience and quality in midfield and attack, but at major tournaments players who can change the rhythm of a match by coming off the bench or with an unexpected move in the final third of the pitch often make the difference. In that role, Karl could have brought speed, directness and an element of unpredictability. That is precisely why waiting for the medical findings is not only about the health status of one player, but also about part of the plan with which Germany enters the tournament.

FIFA rules leave room for a late change

If it turns out that the injury is serious, Germany still has the possibility of changing the squad, but under strictly defined conditions. According to FIFA rules for the 2026 World Cup, a player included in the final squad may be replaced only in the case of serious injury or illness, and only by a player from the expanded preliminary list. Such a change must be carried out no later than 24 hours before the national team's first match at the tournament. Since Germany opens the competition on June 14 against Curaçao in Houston, the window for a possible replacement formally exists, but it is not unlimited. Any decision would have to be coordinated with the medical findings, FIFA procedure and the coaching staff's assessment of the team's needs.

Nagelsmann therefore currently has to conduct two parallel assessments. The first is medical and concerns the question of whether Karl can be ready at all for the demands of the World Cup, including travel, training sessions and matches at short intervals. The second is sporting and concerns the assessment of whether waiting for recovery would be worth the risk if the player will not be able to compete from the start of the tournament. In international football, especially at an expanded tournament with 48 teams, squad depth has great value because the rhythm of the competition changes quickly. Coaches often have to decide not only who is the highest-quality player, but also who is the most medically reliable at a given moment. Karl's case could therefore be one of the last important decisions in the German staff before the start of the competition.

Germany in a group with Curaçao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador

According to the schedule published by the DFB, Germany plays its first match at the World Cup on June 14 against debutant Curaçao in Houston. That is followed by a meeting with Ivory Coast on June 20 in Toronto, and it will conclude Group E on June 25 against Ecuador in New York/New Jersey. FIFA, in its preview of Group E, points out that Germany enters the tournament as a four-time world champion, but also as a national team that has something to prove after early exits in the last two editions of the World Cup. Reuters also recalls that Germany has not won a major international competition since the world title in Brazil in 2014. For that reason, preparations for 2026 are viewed not only through the question of reaching the knockout stage, but also through the broader pressure of returning among the main favorites.

The group schedule does not allow for a long period of adaptation. The first match against Curaçao, a World Cup debutant, looks on paper like a duel in which Germany will be the favorite, but precisely such matches at the start of a tournament carry additional responsibility. The second encounter with Ivory Coast brings a different profile of opponent, a physically strong and technically dangerous team with experience in African competitions. The third duel against Ecuador could be decisive for the standings in the group, especially if points are shared in the first two rounds. In such a context, every loss of a rotational player, and especially of a young attacking player on the rise, reduces the number of options for different match scenarios.

The German staff must preserve the balance between caution and ambition

The German national team entered the final phase of preparations with a clearly expressed ambition to improve the impression left at previous World Cups. When announcing the squad, Nagelsmann said, according to the DFB, that he has a strong team in which he fully believes. In the same period, the German Football Association also announced a logistical plan under which the national team, after the match in Chicago, travels to its base camp in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The DFB states that the team will stay there at The Graylyn Estate and train at Wake Forest University, with the aim of reducing unnecessary travel and ensuring a stable routine during the tournament. Karl's injury disrupts that plan in a sporting sense, but it does not change the basic structure of preparations.

In cases like this, the staff must pay special attention to the psychological aspect, especially because this is an 18-year-old player for whom this would have been a first World Cup. Nagelsmann's request that Karl be given peace shows awareness of the pressure that follows young players when an injury happens in the public eye. If the findings are favorable, the question will be how quickly he can train again and whether he will be used already in the early phase of the tournament. If they are unfavorable, the head coach will have to turn to a replacement solution and quickly integrate it into the tactical plans. In both scenarios, the decision will have to be made based on a risk assessment, not only based on Karl's potential.

For Karl, the uncertainty is a personal blow; for Germany, a tactical problem

Karl's possible absence would above all be a personal blow for a player who reached national-team status in a short period of time. Still, for Germany it would also be a concrete tactical difficulty because the hierarchy of roles is already being built in the final phase of preparations. Young players like Karl are often not burdened with the same expectations as established stars, but precisely for that reason they can be useful when a match requires a change of rhythm. His ability to play in the half-spaces and on the wing could have opened up for Nagelsmann the possibility of a more flexible approach, especially if Germany needed to break down a deep block or speed up the attack in the closing stages of a match. Without him, the head coach would have to further distribute minutes among more experienced options or call up a player with a different profile.

At the moment, the most important thing is to establish the full diagnosis. According to Reuters, Nagelsmann said that the public would receive information after the medical examinations, and until then Karl's participation at the World Cup can only be described as doubtful. Germany will complete its final test against the USA without a definite answer about one of its most interesting young players. After that comes the move toward the tournament base camp and an ever-narrower time frame for final decisions. Ahead of the start of the competition on June 14, the medical findings on Lennart Karl could become one of the key topics of Germany's preparations.
