Manchester City reportedly demands at least 80 million euros for Rodri, Real Madrid leads the race
Manchester City is prepared to consider selling Rodri only if an offer reaches at least 80 million euros, Spanish media claim, as the future of one of the most influential midfielders in world football develops into one of the central topics of the summer transfer window. Real Madrid is currently being described as the most serious candidate, but according to the available information, there is still a significant difference between the clubs in their valuation of the 30-year-old Spanish international. Manchester City wants to keep Rodri and hopes to extend their cooperation, but his current contract expires in June 2027, which means the club is entering a period in which it must weigh the player's sporting importance, the possibility of a new long-term agreement and the risk of losing him without a transfer fee next summer. Paris Saint-Germain has reportedly enquired about the transfer conditions, while Barcelona is also included among the interested parties. As of 28 July 2026, neither Manchester City nor any of the interested clubs had officially announced an offer, a transfer agreement or Rodri's decision to leave.
City wants a new contract, but time is becoming an important factor
Rodri signed his most recent contract with Manchester City in July 2022, when the club officially announced that the agreement had been extended until June 2027. At that point, the Spanish midfielder had completed three seasons in England, and in the years that followed his role grew even further: he became the central point of the team's build-up play, the protection in front of the defensive line and the player through whom the team controls the rhythm of matches. According to a Guardian report from 27 July, City has had a new offer on the table for some time and remains optimistic that negotiations will end in an agreement, although Rodri has not yet accepted the proposed terms. For Manchester City, the decision is not straightforward. Keeping Rodri for the 2026/27 season would bring major sporting benefits, particularly because he represents a player profile that is difficult to replace with a single transfer. At the same time, entering the final year of his contract weakens the seller's negotiating position because interested clubs know that the price is no longer determined solely by the player's quality, but also by the short period remaining on his agreement. The current gap between City's reported valuation and the amount Real Madrid would be prepared to pay is based precisely on that difference. If an extension is not agreed, the English club must decide whether one additional season with Rodri is worth more than a possible transfer fee this summer.
Where the valuation of 80 million euros comes from
Mundo Deportivo reported that Manchester City is demanding at least 80 million euros for Rodri, while Real Madrid would prefer to conduct negotiations within a range of approximately 50 to 60 million euros. Similar figures have been reported by several Spanish and international sports media outlets, but it is important to emphasise that the clubs have not officially confirmed either the asking price or the upper limit of a potential Madrid offer. Therefore, the figure of 80 million euros should be viewed as a media estimate of Manchester City's initial negotiating position, rather than as a publicly announced fixed transfer fee. In such negotiations, the final value may depend on the payment structure, bonuses, payment deadlines and other conditions that are often not visible in the initial reports.
City's valuation is based on Rodri's exceptional sporting importance and the fact that a midfielder who can simultaneously organise possession, close down space and make decisions under pressure at the highest level rarely becomes available on the market. Real Madrid, on the other hand, reportedly wants to emphasise the player's age and the fact that his contract has only one season remaining in negotiations. The difference of approximately 20 million euros between the English club's reported minimum and Madrid's maximum is large enough to prevent a quick agreement, but it is not an unusual starting gap in a transfer involving a player of this profile. The key issue will be whether Real submits a formal offer and whether Rodri clearly tells City that he wants a change of environment.
Real Madrid changed its position after Rodri's outstanding summer
The Guardian reports that Real Madrid changed its earlier, more reserved position after the 2026 World Cup and is now considering a concrete offer. Rodri captained Spain to the world title, while FIFA named him the best player of the tournament and awarded him the World Cup Golden Ball. Such a performance further strengthened his position among the most highly valued midfielders and reduced doubts concerning his physical condition after a period marked by injuries. Real's need for a player who can control the tempo, connect defence and attack and provide stability in major matches explains why Rodri has once again appeared high on the list of potential reinforcements.
The player himself did not close the door to a return to the Spanish league in March. In an interview with Onda Cero, reported by Sky Sports, he said that the time would come to discuss his contract with City, confirmed that he would like to return to La Liga one day and did not rule out the possibility of playing for Real Madrid despite having previously spent a season at Atlético Madrid. At the same time, he stressed that he is happy in the Premier League, so his statements cannot be interpreted as a transfer request. They nevertheless show that the possibility of moving to Madrid is not unacceptable to him, giving a potential buyer a reason to explore the situation. PSG made enquiries, while Barcelona's interest remains less concrete
Paris Saint-Germain became involved in the story after Rodri's performances at the World Cup. According to information from RMC Sport reported by Get French Football News, the Parisian club contacted Manchester City to find out under what conditions a transfer might be possible. Such contact does not mean that a formal offer was submitted, but it shows that PSG wants to be kept informed if City decides to open negotiations. The French club has the financial strength for a major operation and the sporting ambition to assemble midfielders capable of controlling matches against Europe's strongest opponents. Rodri's profile would fit such a strategy, although there is currently no confirmation that he has given PSG priority or that discussions have entered an advanced stage.
Barcelona is also being mentioned among the interested clubs, but information about its involvement is less substantial at this stage. The Guardian mentioned the Camp Nou club as a possible candidate, partly because of injury problems in midfield, while Spanish media report that Barcelona is monitoring developments. The financial feasibility of such a transfer would be a separate issue because, in addition to the transfer fee, the club would also have to cover the salary of a player who belongs to the very top tier of European football. Unlike PSG, for which there is a report of direct enquiries to City, it has not been officially confirmed that Barcelona has submitted an offer or opened formal club-to-club negotiations. At this stage, it is therefore more accurate to speak of monitoring the situation than of an equal three-club race.
Why Rodri is so important to Manchester City
Rodri's value does not derive solely from the trophies he has won. Premier League data shows that by the end of the 2025/26 season, he had attempted 16,526 passes and successfully completed 15,164 of them, with an accuracy rate of 91.8 percent among players with at least 5,000 attempts. Over the same period, only Declan Rice regained possession more frequently among the midfielders being compared. At the 2026 World Cup, according to statistics published by the Premier League, Rodri led the tournament in touches, attempted and completed passes, tackles and successful passes in the final third. These figures explain why City cannot view him merely as a traditional defensive midfielder.
His special quality is that he simultaneously reduces defensive risk and improves attacking quality. When City faces intense pressing, Rodri can receive the ball while facing his own goal, retain it under contact and find a free teammate. When the opposition defends deep, his distribution switches the point of attack and opens space between the lines. In defensive transition, his timely positioning stops counter-attacks before they develop, while in major matches he has also demonstrated an ability to score decisive goals. UEFA recalls that it was his goal against Inter that secured Manchester City's first Champions League title in 2023.
After winning the European title with Spain in 2024, Rodri also won the France Football Ballon d'Or, becoming the first Manchester City player to receive the award. FIFA's award for the best player at the 2026 World Cup further increased his reputation and market visibility. At such a moment, City can reasonably demand a high transfer fee regardless of the remaining length of his contract. The buyer, however, must assess how much it is prepared to pay for a player who has just turned 30 and who would need to be offered one of the highest salaries in the squad when signing a multi-year contract.
Medical status will be part of every serious assessment
Rodri's return to the highest level after serious knee problems was one of the important elements of his performances during the 2025/26 season and at the World Cup. The Guardian reported that after returning from North America, he was expected to undergo a procedure because of a back problem, but as of 28 July, Manchester City had not publicly released a detailed medical report concerning the scope of the procedure or the expected recovery period. In a potential transfer, the medical examination would carry particular significance because interested clubs would assess not only his current quality but also the physical workload following two seasons in which injuries were an important factor. At the same time, eight appearances for Spain at the World Cup and the award for the tournament's best player showed that he is once again capable of enduring the most demanding competitive period.
The medical aspect would not necessarily stop negotiations, but it could affect the pace and structure of an offer. Clubs often make part of the fee dependent on the number of appearances, availability or sporting objectives achieved, particularly when dealing with a player who has a recent history of more serious injuries. Accepting a large proportion of variable bonuses would create additional risk for City, while allowing the buyer to adjust the initial cost according to the medical assessment. Since no official offer has been confirmed, it is currently unknown whether such a model is under consideration. Any claim that the transfer has already been completed is therefore premature.
The negotiations have a clear deadline, but City does not have to rush at any cost
The summer transfer window in the Premier League closes on 1 September 2026 at 11 p.m. British time, the Premier League announced, while the same date is the final day of the summer window in Spain's La Liga. The clubs therefore have a little more than a month to turn their interest into formal offers and, if they move close to an agreement, complete medical examinations, contracts and registration. The deadline creates pressure on all sides, but City is not in a position where it must accept the first offer. Rodri has a valid contract, can remain an important part of the team in the new season and can still sign an extension.
The most important signal will be the continuation of talks between City and Rodri's representatives. If he accepts a new contract, the interest from Real Madrid, PSG and Barcelona would probably have to become a significantly more expensive operation or be postponed. If he rejects an extension and clearly expresses a desire to leave, City's negotiating position would become more complicated, although the club could still insist on its own valuation. Real Madrid is currently being described as the favourite because of its sporting prestige, Rodri's openness to returning to Spain and its reported readiness to prepare an offer. Nevertheless, until official confirmation arrives, the story remains a transfer possibility rather than a completed deal.
